Born in Washington D.C. and now living in Eugene, Oregon, David Bischoff writes science fiction books, short stories, and scripts for television. Though he has been writing since the early 1970s, and has had over 80 books published, David is best known for novelizations of popular movies and TV series including the Aliens, Gremlins, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and WarGames.
I already knew that the characterization of Erik in this was a bit heavy on the crazy compared to the original and other versions, and it made for quite a few hilarious moments. Otherwise, the rest of the cast is not overly altered in terms of characterization or personality. The writing style for this version is meant for younger readers so it is a very easy and enjoyable style, however some of the changes made in order to shorten the story and make it more "kid friendly" undermine some of the main themes of the original book. Compared to the original, the ending especially is strange and disappointing. Now, if taken on its own, the changes do not make the plot unstable, if anything they simplify everything, exactly what a youth novelization would do. Overall, I found the tale to be an enjoyable read, at least up until the end, and would recommend it for any Phantom fan looking to experience other versions of the classic story or monster fans looking for a good romp.
