"I have to do it for me."

ONLY for Tamako to take a step back the moment Kanji shows up. Literally.

I just don't know what this manga wants to be-heck I don't think the manga even knows what it wants to be.

It's marketed as a rom com, and yeah, it's got comedy. But it's more like something you'd find in Hana Kimi or Ouran, which would be great, if it all flowed right. Pearl Pink seems unable to discern what path it should take despite the fact that Tamako and Kanji have to get together.

Tamako is now 15 and Kanji is 18.....and now they're in a relationship. I mean, fine, just 3 years but she's a minor she still has to grow, and despite how "mature" Kanji seems, he's still a young man. He's gonna have hormonal spikes.

And when the mother teases her daughter that she can do whatever she wants so long as she doesn't get pregnant.....

And Tamako GURL what are you doing?! She nearly strips all the way for some director (who was only joking) but she's 15!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just. Can't.

One more volume.

I kind of want Rain and Tamako to happen cuz you know, they kissed for the movie and they're practically the same age.....

2.5 stars. There are only 4 books in this series, and I happened to buy them all, so I figured I'd finish reading them before sending it back to the used book store. This series is a bit all over the place. The premise that the heroine is the secret child of a TV star is summarily dismissed with little fanfare in this novel. Not clear why she can't then go live with her mother rather than her mother's agent and his son, but it seems at this point the goal was to keep the series alive.
This volume also resolves the painful premise that everything the heroine does is to become the woman the hero will love, and though a nice guy (with a fetish for dressing young girls up in pretty clothes) he knows this and encourages it. Here, the heroine finally has the stunning epiphany that maybe she should focus on who she wants to be and he should accept her for who she is.

THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE SERIES

Genre: Young Adult Contemporary Romantic Comedy
Content Rating: Teen (some brief sensuality, rambunctious behavior)
Format Read: Paperback (own)

Pearl Pink is a four-volume contemporary rom-com series about a rambunctious girl who becomes an actress to win the heart of the agent boy she loves. At just four volumes the story only covers her start on the road to stardom and how they fall in love, but it's a sweet, humorous romance with an interesting peek into the Japanese entertainment industry. As one of Meca Tanaka's earlier works (she's better known in the US for Meteor Prince and The Young Master's Revenge) the art can be a little sketchy at times, but the playful action is fun and her character expressions are strong. Overall it's a cute, quick story of love, family, and determination with a charming romance, energetic characters, and an adorable if plot-pointless monkey mascot. Definitely recommend for rom-com readers and Skip*Beat! fans.

Bonus Stories: Volume 2 includes two bonus one-shots. "Destined Lovers" is a cute short about a small girl and a large boy who fall in love and the problems that naturally ensue. "Diamond Half" is, according to the author, about the characters Tamako and Kanji are based on, and is a sweet story of family and how love can change as it ages.

Now this volume it’s worth all 4 starts. My heart skipped a bit or two. Thank you miss Takana for finally letting Kanji show any type of interest that it’s not just play doll dressing with poor Tamako!

There were so many parts on the story that made me go all heart eyes emoji, and then there where some others that had me cringing.

I would say that even though this is rated 13+ teens it has a lot of jokes that seem to have more of an adult tone and not many people would appreciate it considering our MC is 13 going on 14… I’ll just leave it at that.

It really pains me that there is only one more volume left! But final book here I go!

Volume 3 of Pearl Pink improves from the previous two volumes with the addition of some drama from Tamako's audition for a role in her mother's TV show. It made what was before just a romantic comedy, into something more with a sense of purpose and competition (with hilarity, since it was a very funny audition).

Though not great, this 4 volume series is compact enough to enjoy if needing something quick, but entertaining, to read.

Let's hope that next (and last) volume also improves on what was accomplished with this volume.
