4.5/5 stars. I loved this book. It was slow at certain parts but the last hundred pages had me reading till the end of the book. The ending felt satisfying, all the loose ends were tied up neatly. I liked how rocky the marriage between Cameron and Jackson was. How, just because they were married, that doesn't mean that everything is all rainbows and sunshine, how there always could be a storm on the horizon. The verbal fights felt real and could happen in real life (Jackson's cheating (?), the miscarriage, ect). The only downside to this book is the mission that Jackson was on. For hundreds of pages in this book, Jackson's last mission was to find a man named Thompson, the guy was raiding farms and killing innocent people and animals. Despite all the fight scenes and traveling that occurs, in ONE scene, Jackson not only finds Thompson but there's no real climax payoff for the reader; no fight scene, no real bloodshed, Thompson gives up without a fight. ARE YOU KIDDING ME! The one man that killed people just gives up because, well, there's no real reason explained, he just does. This guy was suppose to be a threat to country, not just wimp out. This scene right here is the definition of the word anticlimactic. After all the hype built up to this guy, we the readers, don't get a pay off! I am still fuming as I write this. I understand the author wanted to give more time for Jackson's and Cameron's relationship but still, at least a sword fight, give us something! Okay, moving on, the scene where Cameron gets kidnapped by Clyde was eventful, although the book never stated if he died. The writing was good, as always. Overall, a great book but with one main bad part, I would reread this again, recommend this book and I will be picking up more books by this author in the future.
