Caroline, a highly sought after life coach, seems to have the most glamorous life - with celebrity clients and a handsome husband.⁣

Until it all comes crashing down. ⁣

She used to be the student of Devorah, a retired and cantankerous professor - who is also now suing her for stealing her book idea.⁣

And then a devastating personal scandal has her fleeing to her Cape Cod hometown, and hopefully with Devorah’s help - get her life back in order.

This was such a fun, fast read - it was rooted in friendship and how the choices we make - no matter how small - can affect us and our legacy in some big ways. There’s a bit of a second chance romance, a hilarious and cranky older MC, and some really clever and fascinating bits of philosophy that had me wanting to read some of the classic works.⁣

It’s the perfect mixture of beachy vibes, witty laugh out loud moments, and some emotionally bittersweet sadness - but ultimately a imaginative breath of fresh air story that I enjoyed immensely!⁣

TITLE: SOME DOUBT ABOUT IT
AUTHOR: Marion McNabb
PUB DATE: 05.07.2024

Life has its ups and downs and no one knows that more than Caroline a celebrity life coach whose life comes tumbling down - licking her wounds back to her Cape Cod hometown.

I love a story about an unlikely friendship, second chance at love and life - reinventing oneself, and the complications along the way of adulting. Sometimes all you have to do is laugh and take it all in strides.

This was an enjoyable read for me - equal parts heart and humor, and all parts entertaining beach read. Don’t miss this one.

I was able to read an advance copy of this title on NetGalley.

Caroline is on top of the world, a best selling author and self help guru, making appearances on talk shows - when suddenly it seems like her entire life is going up in flames, both personally and professionally.

This book is a lovely read, if quite sad, and sometimes melancholy. It is something of a love letter to Cape Cod.

this book has a little bit of everything.
philosophy, friendship, cheating, second chance romance, grief, the list goes on.

our two leading ladies, Caroline, best-selling self-help extraordinaire, and Devorah, retired philosophy professor and chihuahua owner, are on opposite sides of a lawsuit. Dev decided to sue her former friend and mentee, Caroline, because she basically stole her life’s work and published it.
in confronting each other, Devorah and Caroline are forced to confront the grievances that made them part ways originally, as well as other aspects of their past.

i really enjoyed the perspective on friendship, getting older, and the philosophy tidbits in this book. the best part of this book was definitely Devorah’s scathing personality. if i had a devil on my shoulder, i imagine it would be something like Devorah.

Caroline, on the other hand, fell flat for me. her personality and character arc felt a bit underdeveloped. despite some backstory, i didn’t feel like i knew why she was the way that she was or why she ultimately changed. her relationship with her jilted lover Danny Diaz was also confusing to me. because they both felt underdeveloped, i didn’t understand their history/why they liked each other, and i could never tell where they were at.

thanks to netgalley, the author, and publisher for the e-arc!

A life coach who has life issues- the irony is so funny to me. The author did a great job of making this one funny too. A second chance romance and it was cute and sad all at the same time. I was so happy to see the FMC evolve over the book and really figure out a deeper level of what she wanted out of life.

🌀Synopsis
Caroline’s life is amazing. How could it not be? She’s a famous life coach helping everyone else make their lives better. Lurking beneath the surface is trouble, though. She figures out her husband has been cheating and she’s being sued.
Returning to her old stomping grounds, she finds several loose ends. One of them being the man she once loved. She left him to pursue more but the feelings are still there. The other is her old mentor, the one who is suing her. After trying to just smooth things over with both of them she realizes it’s going to take a lot more than that and sets out to make things right.

Wow! This was a roller coaster of a story!

We start off with Caroline, a self help entrepreneur, who has hit the jackpot! She’s written a book, and made many connections! But just as her life is blowing up, celebrity wise, it’s also falling apart.

She finds out her husband is not the faithful, wonderful being she believed he was. 😮. And, then finds out that her old mentor and friend is suing her for plagiarism...basically saying that the book she wrote was not hers!

She decides to return home to Cape Cod/ Nantucket to meet with her old mentor Devorah, to see if they can work things out.

Well, Devorah is a whip!! She’s old. She’s cranky. She puts up with no one and nothing! And she travels with her old rescue dog (chihuahua) Mary Magdalene everywhere! Like to restaurants…bars…etc. And, tends to get into fights with any and everyone who gives her a hard time along the way! She is known to give lip service to many!!

So when Caroline returns home, it’s no surprise that Devorah wants NOTHING to do with her! But Caroline is patient…and doesn’t give up so easily… and soon they are trying to work things out!

There is SO MUCH going on in this one…stuff that will make you laugh, as well as stuff that will make you cry. And, the characters are drawn very deep…so you really feel like you are their friends…

Then add in the fact that this is a small town where everyone knows everyone else, and words spread fast. And then, additionally, add in a love interest from their HS days…and, well, you’ve definitely got a hit on your hands!!

Very different! Mostly fun scenes, but with a few heartbreaking ones as well!

I recently listened to Some Doubt About It, a novel, written by Marion McNabb and read by Erin Bennett.

Caroline Beckett is a self-help author. Everything is fine and dandy until a tabloid article sends her life spiraling. After her world begins crashing, Caroline returns to her hometown to speak with her long ago mentor, retired professor, Devorah Van Buren. Devorah is an older woman, whose quirky behaviors lead to her (and her chihuahua, Mary Magdaline) being kicked out of local restaurants

When Caroline returns to her family's home, she discovers her long-ago love still lives locally.

This is a sweet story with interesting characters. The narrator does a nice job voicing both Caroline and Devorah. It was an easy listen and kept me engaged.

Thank you to NetGalley and Brillance Audio for the advanced listen in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I went into this one thinking that it would be just another women’s fiction read. Boy, was I wrong, this is so much more. Caroline Beckett has everything until her husband cheats on her and her life begins falling apart. An old friend sues Caroline for plagiarism and ideas that made Caroline famous. Caroline packs up her stuff, and heads to her hometown to try to solve her issues. The characters all had a ton of depth and changes and grew throughout the story. The writing was captivating and drew me right in. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a great job portraying Caroline. This is a great summer read as the story takes place in Cape Cod.

I devoured this book! No spoilers but the s*!? hit the fan in basically every aspect of Caroline’s life and she had a lot to figure out. She returned to the small town where she grew up for the first time in many years. I was rooting for her big time even though some of the mess was from her own bad decisions. Senior pup Mary Magdalene was such a precious canine character and I enjoyed her sometimes cantankerous owner’s devotion to her. Great storyline, great character development and the narrator was fantastic.

I wanted to like it but just couldn't get there. It should not be classified as romance. Too angsty, wrong ending.

Some Doubt About it is a beautiful look into what it's like to fall from the grace of the public and the journey of having to search for oneself. McNabb does a great job of blending comedy and drama to create a book that has the highs and lows of real life. Overall I would say if you are looking for a book that explores the steps we as people take to better themselves and how absurd that concept really is then this will be your manifesto.

If you follow my reviews, you know it’s rare that I read a book's synopsis before develing into it. I usually know the genre and title, and either like or dislike the book cover. That’s it. So, in the case of Some Doubt About It, I pretty much went in clueless, guessing that it might lean toward a romance.

I quickly discovered that McNabb was able to beautifully handle a gamut of emotions that surrounded her story. I was chuckling from the get-go. I even found myself rereading a certain passage several times, just to keep appreciating it. But it didn't last. She switched seamlessly from comedy to drama and the pain that others can cause.

This explains the ups and downs that the book contains:

"Caroline Beckett is living the dream. A self-help guru with a glamorous clientele and a marriage to a handsome photographer, she’s proof women really can have it all. But one night leaves Caroline reeling, forcing her to reconsider everything she thought she knew about her life―and what (if any) business she has teaching anyone how to live theirs."

The characters felt unique and human in the feelings they were experiencing. Caroline Beckett and Devorah van Buren share the story with their chapter headings. The two are thrown together when Devorah accuses Caroline of stealing her book research and calling it her own. Then capitalizing on it and reaching great notoriety and success. The two are forced to explore deep feelings toward each other and themselves.

My Concerns

I can see some readers being sensitive and even put off by Devorah’s deliberate rudeness and bluntness. To those people I will say, hang in there. Keep reading. The story holds deeper meaning than outward actions and appearances.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a story that will stay with you long after you close the book, please consider Some Doubt About It.

As I mentioned, it covers a large array of emotions that feel based on realism rather than romanticism. I laughed and I hurt along with these characters. To coin the cliche, it was a roller coaster of emotions.

If you’re looking for a book that explores believable characters and has the beautiful backdrop of Cape Code, this is your book. If you want a book that keeps beckoning for you to pick it up and continue reading, this is it.

Marion McNabb is an author I definitely will be following.

My thanks to Marion McNabb and Lake Union Publishing for an ARC. I was under no obligation to post a positive review.

This is a well-timed release to be an enjoyable summer read. Caroline has become a celebrity self-help guru by bringing the work of stodgy old philosophers like Plato to the masses through, in the words of her former mentor Devorah, “sexing it up and dumbing it down.” Caroline has achieved fame and fortune in L.A. but, on an Emmy red carpet, everything goes sideways when reporters start asking about the video — the one she didn’t know existed of her husband cheating with her young assistant. Not only Is her marriage apparently over, but she is also being sued by Devorah for stealing her ideas for the book that made her famous. Caroline goes back to her hometown of Cape Cod to confront Devorah and ends up confronting the childhood she never fully finished grieving and the potential life and love she could have had.

I really enjoyed the character development here, particularly salty, strong Devorah with her straight-up drinks, no-filter comments and little dog Mary Magdelene. I also enjoyed the New England setting, which will speak to fans of books such as Elin Hilderbrand’s. There’s a scene where Caroline stops at a favorite ice cream shop of her youth and describes eating her treats that is so descriptive and resonant of those joyful times that we all connect through food to places we love. The only downside is that I didn’t feel a deep connectivity with any of the characters here as I sometimes do in books, where the intensity with which I’m rooting for them is carrying me through. This was a fast and fun read and one in which I was interested to know how everything turned out, but my attachment to the characters and interest in the philosophical thoughts it offers on life remained mostly at a surface level. I also did not connect with the second-chance romance plot development enough for it to make sense to me. Still, I enjoyed it and would recommend this as a summer/beach read!

This publishes on May 7. Thank you to #NetGalley, #BrillianceAudio and #MarionMcNabb for the advance copy!

Caroline Beckett may be a celebrity life coach, but her life is about to go up in flames.

While Caroline is busy promoting her new book and building her brand when things start to fall apart. An incriminating video of her husband surfaces, and Devorah, Caroline’s old mentor, makes accusatory claims.

Why do we take pleasure in others’ misery? Although we shouldn’t, watching Caroline’s life implode was sometimes quite humorous. She just couldn’t win. Leaving one dumpster fire behind, she heads back to her hometown of Cape Cod to deal with another.

This book worked so well for me because of Caroline and Devorah. They were great characters and quite opposite; despite that, they are friends, even though time and life have gotten between them. Devorah was older and very cantankerous. She had been Caroline’s professor and mentor, and now she was claiming Caroline had stolen her ideas for the book. But when the two women reunite, there are big things at play and lessons to learn, even if time is running out.

Other great elements include a sprinkling of philosophy, reuniting with a high school sweetheart, and a roller-coaster of emotions. Set mainly on Cape Cod, it was a fun beach read with a lot of spunk.

Caroline is a self help guru with a celebrity clientele. She is married to a gorgeous guy who has now publicly cheated on her. One night Caroline leaves thinking about what she knows and the what ifs about life and is she really qualified to teach people how to live their lives. Caroline’s mentor Deborah decided to sue her for basically stealing her life work and publishing it. Deborah confronts Caroline. Deborah is pretty much a tell you as it is character. You will love this character. After the confrontation by Devorah, Caroline retreats to her hometown Cape Cod and tries to come up with a way to salvage her career. Devorah and Caroline decide to come to terms with many of their own issues and eventually the two rekindle their friendship and form new ones and become allies. After all of this will Caroline be able to recover and will she be able to find love again. The book has it all heartbreak, love, forgiveness, second chance romance, grief, scandals , friendship, humor and lastly finding one’s self worth again. I enjoyed it very much. I also loved the descriptions of Cape Cod.

A woman who writes self help books is not someone I would usually be eager to read about, but our lead protagonist here is someone who believes in what she writes and also tries to live the life she promotes. Everything is rosy until she is caught on camera finding out about her husband's cheating. To top things off, the person who introduced her to philosophy in general wants to sue her.

What happens next is a woman who goes back to her hometown, tries to fix her mistakes and manages to meet up with her childhood fiancé. The ending is not the expected format; however, some changes were appreciated, making it easy to read.

It felt like a short book, and some things felt rushed. I did not have time to decide what I felt for the people being introduced to us. Except for the husband and him, I decided quite early on.

I liked the writing and wouldn't mind trying out more books by the author. I would recommend this book to people who like a semi-redemption plotline.

I received an ARC thanks to Netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.

This story of Caroline the life coach is so far outside of my world while also incredibly relatable. I find a sort of kinship with Caroline as she goes from seeing the life she believes she's living to the one in which she actually belongs - the breakdown of a dream world we've all lived in at one point or another. The story of "home", the memories and the feeling of not belonging feel familiar to me. Devorah is so very real, like you can reach out and touch her. I love her snarky nature and sadly I can see myself falling into a similar role. Getting older and not caring what others think any longer...on the outside, but desperately wanting something more. The more I read the more I wanted to know more. I'd love to hear where Caroline goes from here and where life takes her. I really enjoyed her relationship with Danny and wanted more for them. The rich descriptions of Cape Cod gave me vivid pictures of my time in New England and I want nothing more than to travel back there and breathe it all in. A fun read with quite a few out loud giggles.

Some Doubt About It was a very enjoyable listen.  Caroline's life seems to have turned to custard, her marriage, her book and her TV show all seem to be in trouble.  Meanwhile back in Caroline's home town Devorah sits in her curmudgeonly life and berates Caroline.

Yet when Caroline returns to her home town there is a whole lot of facing into life as it was and as it might be.  Devorah doesn't make it easy for Caroline - yet there are some strong bonds there.

Caroline also reunites with her long friend Danny Diaz. A very nice guy. Will Caroline settle down with him?  Events follow that are  really sad. Through it all though Caroline will find out who she really is and what she really wants to do. I ended up perfectly satisfied with the outcome.

Erin Bennett narrates this perfectly, capturing the characters thoughts and emotions and paces the whole story very well. She narrates in a way that enhances the experience of the story.

The novel is a delightful blend of humor, intelligence, and a touch of sorrow. It revolves around Carolyn Becket, a renowned author and self-help icon, and her mentor turned adversary, Devorah Van Buren, a retired philosophy professor. A scandal catapults Carolyn into the public eye, followed by a lawsuit from the formidable Devorah. Amidst the chaos of her crumbling personal and professional life, Carolyn returns to her roots in Cape Cod to confront Devorah and rescue her career.

The book is an engaging journey through the lives of its characters, filled with themes of self-discovery, reconciliation, camaraderie, and new beginnings. The narrative is so richly detailed that Cape Cod's sandy shores, quaint shops, and quirky locals come alive, making it the perfect companion for a day at the beach. A heartfelt shoutout to Net Galley and Lake Union Publishing for providing an Advance Reader Copy of this delightful read.

I got to read an advance copy of this book on NetGallery.

This book is funny, smart, and a little heart breaking. The two main characters are Carolyn Becket, a best-selling author and celebrity self help guru, and Devorah Van Buren, a retired philosophy professor, and Carolyn’s former mentor. Carolyn experiences a very public scandal, that is swiftly followed by the threat of a lawsuit brought by her feisty former mentor, Devorah. With Carolyn’s personal and professional life in turmoil, she heads to her hometown in Cape Cod to see Devorah and try to salvage her career.

This was a really fun read, and I found myself invested in it’s characters. The descriptions of Cape Cod, with it’s beaches, shops and local characters, were so vivid, I could practically taste the salty air and feel the sea breezes. This is an ideal beach read.

I love a good Internet influencer. A story set there always brings so much fodder for comparison between the harsh realities of real life, compared with the supposed “vulnerable” perfection of the online influencer world.

I sped through this book, loving the references to Greek philosophy, Influencer living, and the comparison between Devorah van Buren, the grumpy mentor who feels like her life’s work was stolen from her, and Caroline Beckett, the perfect influencer who’s husband is cheating and whose life is pretty much falling apart.

When Caroline visits her hometown and their paths collide, Devorah will help her see life differently and Caroline will re-question her priorities.

I appreciated this fast, page-turning read, with an extra message about living life as best we can, and being true to ourselves.

Caroline appears to have it all - a bestselling self-help book, a great husband, and fabulous house in California. Then, all of a sudden, it comes crashing down on her. Her husband is caught having an affair, and her long-ago mentor, Devorah, is now suing her for stealing her ideas and publishing them in her new book! In the midst of her world in California crashing down on her, Caroline returns to her childhood home in Cape Cod to confront Devorah about the lawsuit. Once back on Cape Cod, Caroline confronts memories of her parents, her childhood, and her high school sweetheart!

This book mixes the philosophy of Plato with a solid look at how we deal with the stresses of everyday life and what our lives really mean. This novel will be published on May 7, 2024. Thank you NetGalley for an advanced ARC of this book

Today I read this in one sitting and I have enjoyed the story line of a woman who comes from a small town and wanted to make it big, but at the beginning of the book we are with this woman thinking everything's great until she caught her husband cheating with her secretary. Slowly her life starts to come apart so she goes back to her home town where she finds out she is being sued for liable & seeing her old lover.

The book is well done with a story that kept me interested, it reminded me at some points of yellow face but only by a little .... but in this book it also shows that fame comes with a price but u can also lose it just as fast as you received it, always be thankful for what u have because it is never greener on the other side

You have to read Some Doubt About It. It’s like if your favorite self-help guru got dragged back to her hometown after her life imploded—cheating husband, career scandal, and oh yeah, her old mentor is suing her for stealing her ideas. Caroline, the life coach, is a total mess in the best way, and her former professor Devorah? She’s a cranky, chihuahua-toting philosopher who steals every scene. Their dynamic is hilarious and weirdly touching.

It’s got second chances, messy friendships, and a little romance that sneaks up on you. Plus, the Cape Cod setting gives it that breezy summer vibe, even when things get emotionally heavy. I laughed, I winced, and I kind of want Devorah to be my life coach now. It’s smart, funny, and surprisingly deep—perfect for when you want something light but not fluffy.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for this ARC

I really enjoyed this one! The premise is fabulous—a life coach who wrote the book on "Success at Life" gets accused of stealing her former mentor's work and is forced to confront all the ways she absolutely doesn't have life figured out. It's told from the dual POV of the life coach (Caroline) and her former mentor (Devorah), and I found both characters relatable and fun, even when they were very much at odds with each other. This book had me laughing out loud at several points as it confronts the absurdity of the self-help industry, and the descriptions of Cape Cod will have you longing to put your toes in the sand. Oh, and there's also a second-chance romance arc which I found refreshingly realistic and unpredictable.

Can't wait to read what this author writes next!

In “Some Doubt About It” by Marion McNabb, famous self-help guru Carolyn has everything going her way—interviews, a best seller, and a television show. But suddenly, everything unravels. Her husband is having an affair, and she is accused of having plagiarized her work from her former mentor and employer, Devorah. To try to put things right, she goes back to her hometown in Cape Code to try to convince Devorah to drop the lawsuit.

This is a story of self-exploration, forgiveness, friendship, and second chances. I enjoyed the book a lot, especially the characterization of Carolyn and Devorah, but I found the last 10% to be a bit of a letdown.

Many thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for an ARC of this novel. My opinions are my own.

I really enjoy stories of friends turned enemies that find their way back to being friends. This story is a little different in that Devorah was a mentor to Caroline, but the bonds of a deeper relationship are there. I adored Devorah and her attachment to her well-named dog, Mary Magdalene. Her gruff exterior hides a truly caring heart and her wit made me laugh out loud at times. Caroline is not as likeable and is a bit selfish at first, but she gradually won me over as she softened and changed. I did like how she eventually came back to her roots and realized what's important in life. The audiobook, narrated by Erin Bennett, is a lovely way to read this heart-warming novel of second chances.

I received a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.

First thing’s first: thank you Netgalley for the ALC of this book!
Some doubt about it follows Caroline, a self help author, as she navigates her very public divorce amid a cheating scandal and her going back to Cape Cod to convince her ex-mentor not to sue for plagiarism.
This book was bittersweet and funny at times and interesting enough that I enjoyed my listen. I didn’t think anything was groundbreaking about it and I probably won’t be thinking about it in the future, but I enjoyed my listen. It would be a good little beach read or pool reader for the coming summer! Some parts felt rushed or poorly fleshed out, but I don’t think it really took away from the story.
