Tom was unlucky with his timing. He was born in the middle of a war, left school in the middle of a depression, and joined Liverpool City Police six weeks before the outbreak of WW2. He nevertheless had a happy childhood, growing up next to Everton football ground. His memoir describes Tom's exploits with his brother Jack and their mates, the McGauley brothers, and revisits his early work experience in a Liverpool few would recognise today.
