War. Betrayal. Exile. When you’re an immortal valkyrie, who has walked the realms for two thousand years, there are some moments that haunt your every step. Which is why sometimes it’s easier to hide away from the world.Unfortunately for Sigrun, one of her friends was a stubborn feline shifter who decided it was time to drag the old valkyrie out of her self-imposed isolation. Now she finds herself saddled with the responsibility of mentoring a young valkyrie and doing her best to protect the few friends she has left. But her past won't let her go, and an old enemy has reappeared.Determined to face this dark threat alone, Sigrun must adapt her plans when fate interferes. A mysterious fae warrior, with a jaded history all his own, convinces her to agree to a temporary alliance. No bargain with the fae is ever simple, and this one might once again alter the course of Sigrun’s life.A Shift in Wings is a spicy fantasy romance and is told from Sigrun's POV. This is NOT a standalone and must be read after A Shift in Ashes.
Maddox Grey is a queer nonbinary elder millennial who still remembers vividly what it was like to be emotionally damaged by the season two finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
They write morally grey characters who fall for equally unhinged morally grey love interests. And the banter flows as fast as the action in the stories they craft.
When they’re not putting their characters through hell, Maddox is playing video games, reading smut, burying their nose in comic books, or hiding behind a pillow while they watch horror movies.

If you’re curious about what I’m reading, you can follow my “reviews” here. Personally I’m not comfortable publicly reviewing other authors books. So if I enjoyed it, it gets five stars from me, lol. My taste in books is… chaotic… but mostly some flavor of fantasy.
“A Shift in Wings” is part of Maddox Grey’s Lost Legacies fantasy romance series, but it’s told from the POV of Sigrun, the noble, quiet Valkyrie who is mentoring Bryn.
Okay, so I’ve been really curious about Sigrun ever since she was introduced in the third book, “A Shift in Fortune,” so reading a book from her POV was both interesting and enlightening!
Sigrun is the kind of person who tries to avoid conflict if possible, but if it comes down to protecting the people she cares about, she won’t let anything or anyone stand in her way.
This book allows the reader to learn a lot about Sigrun, her thought process, her past, and valkyries in general, and I found everything about it fascinating.
Niall, Sigrun’s love interest, was an interesting character because he wasn’t one dimensional. Even though he only appeared in the series for one brief moment before this, I was completely and totally attached to him by the end of this book.
There were also fun scenes featuring Nemain and her friends/allies, which I always love to read about! The banter between these characters is so freaking hilarious, and I love how strong their friendships/relationships are - this series is the found family trope at its finest. I highly recommend!
A Shift in Wings is the 5th book in The Lost Legacies series. This book is told from the valkyrie Sigrun’s POV and focuses on her time on her mission in the seraphim lands while Nemain and company are in the dragon realm.
It’s been 6 months since she has officially taken Bryn on as an apprentice and admits she’s grown fond of her kinship having been exiled so long. While it’s from Sigrun’s POV, we still get time with our favorite feline shifter Nemain and her colorful allies.
While on her mission, Sigrun’s path crosses with Niall, a defector of Balor’s army that Nemain encountered, and both their lives are changed.
They must work together to gain intel will be key to preparing the realms for the upcoming war against Balor and his allies…
“You will always be what brought me back from the darkness. But I'll find more in this new world." “Stay. Stay with me” “I wanted you the moment you held that knife to my throat."
Sigrun is a tortured soul without a true home. We get to follow her on her journey to finding love and acceptance. Niall somehow understands her on a deeper level and that fear of vulnerability and possibility of love seems out of reach for both of them. I adored their budding relationship and banter.
We also get some great scenes with Badb and a closer look at how she really feels about Nemain and what she sacrificed.
Although there are many characters and realms featured throughout the series, nothing ever feels overwhelming. The world building is detailed and vivid. Each character is so well developed and distinct.
Despite the dark themes throughout the series, Maddox manages to inject a unique brand of humor and sarcasm that feels authentic and endearing. I cannot wait to see what happens next!
**I received a free e-ARC and am voluntarily leaving my honest review. Thank you to Maddox Grey for the opportunity!**
So good! I love how this series also gives you glimpses of side characters, and in this book we follow Sigrun. I really like her as a character so this was a real treat! Getting to spend more time with her awesome animal companions, Viggo and Gunnar, was also amazing! The Norse mythology retelling in this story was fantastic.
Sigrun is a lone valkyrie that was banished by her kind after she commited an unforgivable act. When she and Nemain part ways in the seraphim realm, Sigrun is confronted by an old enemy. As she plans to take this enemy on, she discovers she is being tailed by a fae warrior that has dark secrets of his own. Against her better judgment she decides to form a temporary alliance. Unbeknownst to her, this decision will significantly alter her future. Only time will tell of she will live to regret it.
I was sad to see this is not on Audible yet, but it is available in Kindle (not unlimited but only $3.99). Maddox was super awesome and sent me all of the other books for free! I think she probably sent this one also, but I did something weird on my end and messed up the download. Anyway, I'm loving this series and I'm happy to purchase it.
I'm pumped to be able to start the ARC for A Shift in Death now! There was a big cliff-hanger at the end of book 4 and again at the end of this book, that alluded to what I'm pretty sure is about to happen, and Nemain is going to LOSE IT. I am going to lose it!
Again, if you haven't given this series a go, I highly recommend it!
This was a great read to start the year with, I adored being able to jump back in to the lost legacies series.
Having Sigrun’s POV throughout this story during her continued time in the seraphim realm was amazing, learning more about her backstory and how she got to where she is now was thoroughly enjoyable.
I was unsure of Niall as a character at first, but I warmed to him as the book went on and found myself completely enraptured watching their relationship develop. This book is emotionally charged and you can really understand the characters motivations and them being the main driver for the story.
The sections of the story that were inspired by Norse mythology but that were in my opinion fresh and seamlessly included was one of my favourite aspects of this book.
Spicy scenes throughout this book were top notch and felt well placed.
I’m incredibly excited to see where the series goes next!
Who doesn’t love a bit of Norse Mythology thrown in for good measure?? Action packed as with all Maddox Grey books, some good lovin’s, and character development that is beautifully done.
This part of the story focuses on Sigrun, the Valkyrie who is no longer apart of her own realm, who has a fondness for Bryn. Although she has been a minor character in some of the other books, she is brought to the forefront and given her time to bask in the glory of the readers limelight. Nemain and Mikhail are in the dragon realm, which leaves the story to explore more of Sigrun and her past. And it did Not disappoint. Niall, the romantic interest of Sigrun, and fae warrior bad ass who shows up in all the right ways, scorches the pages.
A quick read that allows side characters to be shown the love they deserve. And just because it is a quick read doesn’t mean its short on spice. Maddox Gray is a master of her writing. I’m eager to see what comes next.
I loved this book. I love getting a point of view from Sigrun our bad ass Valkyrie, who has a soft spot for Bryn. Even though Nemain annoys the hell out of her. She is a loyal friend nonetheless. I love getting some glimpses of the other characters from someone else’s point of view. at this point, Maddox can write a grocery list and I would pre-order after begging for an arc and then buy me the physical copies of said grocery list 😂😂. I cannot stop recommending this series. The diversity (biopic characters and LGBTQ+) is top-tier as well as the banter and the found family. I cannot ask for more in a book being a person of color in the LGBTQ+ community. This was done right, and I would love is other authors, who choose to write characters from other cultures to take notes. Off to the next book.
I have very much enjoyed books 1-4 of this series so far and so couldn’t wait to read this fifth book told from our kick ass Valkyrie’s POV. Sigrun Is such a great character, she’s strong, she’s snarky and she’s sassy as we follow her adventures in the seraphim realm and they are every bit as gripping and exciting as the previous books. The world building continues to enthral and draw you in as Sigrun’s adventures puts her in the path of Niall, a fae warrior who has defected from Balor’s army. Together they must find the intel needed to take Balor down and along the way discover each other and what they mean to each other and it has you on the edge of your seat. It’s dark, it’s exciting and it grabs you and holds on tight from start to finish! A wonderful addition to this most excellent series!
I think this is my favourite book to date in the Lost Legacies series (This is Book 5)
‘No bargain with the Fae is ever simple, and this one might once again alter the course of Signrun’s life’ 🤯🤯🤯
So main points for recommending this book?
1. EVERYTHING LISTED ABOVE! 2. An amazing writing style which isn’t confusing or too descriptive heavy (I personally prefer more dialogue) 3. Saucy scenes 4. Characters you can really route for and your heart bleeds when you unearth more of their story 5. Knowing there’s another in this series 😉😉
I loved reading Sigrun story ,and a continuation in the main plot of lost legacies ! I loved a lot about this book seeing things and ppl from Sigrun eyes especially nehmain and Badb !!! Also finding out what happened to that fae that was sent through the portal and how much I really like him !!! Niall was great and just was Sigrun needed and vice versa he needed her just as much . This book is not meant to be read as a stand alone so if you haven’t read the other 4 books go do yourself a favor and read them ! This. Book had quite a bit going on but action packed I mean Hello a Valkyrie book of course it’s got action but also steamy when it gets going !! 100% recommend this series to any fantasy , urban fantasy fan !!
This author has done it again. This fantasy romance was a fantastic read. While I loved Books 1 -4 of this series, this one is my favorite. While characters from the first four books do make an appearance this story focuses on Sigrun, FMC and valkyrie, and Niall, MMC and fae warrior. Sigrun’s and Niall’s story is light on spice but when they come together, they burn up the pages.
The trademark snark and adventure are present as well as the continuation of the wonderful world that was created from the very start. If you are a fan of well written fantasy that talk about Valkyries, Fae, Thor, Thor’s hammer, and Ragnorak just to name a few, this book is for you.
I loved this little Sigrun novella! I feel like I know this character (and others) so much better now, and it’s getting me even more excited for the next installment of the series.
What I liked ✨the reveals about Sigrun’s background and a deeper look into her personality ✨super quick read ✨Norse mythology ✨found family ✨made me love a lot of the side characters more ✨a headboard moment 👀 ✨the ending got me even more excited about the next book!
Why not 5 stars? ⚒️ I know it was a novella but the romance seemed a bit quick. It was still ADORABLE though, and I can’t wait to see where their relationship goes from here
Book 5 in the Lost Legacies series is told from Sigrun’s point of view. I couldn’t put this one down. We finally get to learn more about Sigrun and why she was no longer part of the Valkyrie realm. Niall is back in this one and he and Sigrid share chemistry that can’t be denied. I’m not gonna lie, I was hoping that Sigrun and Magos would get together and I hope to see a book featuring him soon. That being said, I like Niall, and by the end of the story I was rooting for him.
This entire series will pull you in and not let go. I highly recommend reading, but you need to start from book one to get the backstory needed.
So what can I say about this book? Except that it’s a perfect story, just like all the others. You get to see the beginning of a new love and romance.
If you liked Lost Legacies, you’ll love A Shift in Wings. This book is from Sigrun’s point of view, while Nemain and the rest travel to the Dragon Realm. The story takes place mostly in the Seraphim Realm, where Sigrun is gathering information for Pele and the group about their connection with Balor and the rest of the Fae Devourers. And finally, Sigrun finds a new meaning for her life — and I loved it!

I completely devoured this book in one day and it has left me wanting for more! In this book Sigrun got to tell her story and how she’s working to heal herself. And I absolutely loved getting to know her more. Also loved getting to know Niall after meeting him very briefly before. I can’t wait to see where this amazing story leads to next. And would very highly recommend it to all epic fantasy lovers.
I highly recommend these books!! You fall in love with all the main characters and worry about them surviving all the chaos and events that take place in each book! I don’t want to give anything away but wow each book is a treat that is hard to stop reading!! I am at the end and have to wait for the next book coming out in August. I so hope you enjoy them as much as have!!
Learning a little more about the mentor Valkyrie was so fun. It was also so good to see her have emotions. I hope to learn more about Bryne soon. And while I know their companions are super strong races of creatures, but it will always seem like vicious little pets that they adventure with 😅
Seraphs are just too much. For villians they talk a lot and that usually bites them in the ass.
Niall is growing on me.. and their love story is probably my second fav so far
Adored the grumpy/sunshine vibes of this. Niall is perfect for Sigrun and I love that what we thought was just a minor one scene character several books ago came back here! That was a fun tie in! It was also really interesting to see this side of Badb since we’ve really only seen her from Nemain’s POV before.
Now I’m all caught up on the series have to wait until the next book comes out. 😭
I love this series so much! It was fun to see the POV of Sigrun, a 2,000+ year old Valkyrie. Her journey is a part of the overall conflict of the series, but the growth and depth we get is refreshing. I cannot wait for the rest of the series to come out!!
I didn’t think I would enjoy this book as much because this book is not about Nemain but actually I LOVED IT! I love the detail in all of Maddox Greys books. She brings the stories alive with her writing and I can really be immersed into that world!

Love this series but still feel like the books are rushed, specifically with building the romance. Like we get a little tension then suddenly they’re in love. Where’s the build up?!
I love that this series has books that explore side characters but still link back to the overarching storyline. They're like side quests in a way. I loved getting to see more of Sigrun's background and I was not expecting a few things that were revealed. Sigrun and Niall's banter and chemisty were delightful. I'm keen to dive back into the 'main quest' in the next book.
Loved that we finally got Sigruns story! I was so thrown by some of her past but it was such a good throw! I can't wait for the next book in this series.
While Nemain and Mikhail are busy in the dragon realm, Sigrun investigates why there are humans in the seraphim realm. Sigrun, the main character of this story, has previously been a minor character on the periphery of Nemain's story, but here she shines. We learn more about her past; and see how she learns to move forward from it. I really enjoyed Sigrun's story, and hope she takes a larger role in the main story going forward.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
