But being back with her family and their homespun values made Chloe question what she wanted in life. Especially when she learned Luke's real reasons for coming. And it wasn't until she glimpsed the loving man this hard-edged executive could be that Chloe discerned God's plan. Could He now help her guide Luke back to his faith --- and into her loving arms?

Luke Hunter worked for Dalton Resorts. He grew up poor and wanted nothing else but to put that behind him and have no one ever know. He hid it well. He worked in their Chicago office and Chloe Caldwell was his right hand man and in love with him. Chloe wrote home often about Luke. Her family presumed that they were dating.
Chloe's grandmother invited Luke to her 80th birthday party. Chloe told him that he didn't have to go but he agreed to go as Chloe's date. His plan was to use Chloe's family's belief in their dating as a cover to research the area for a new Dalton Resort location. If he found a suitable location, he might just get everything he thought he wanted in life and become vice-president of Dalton Resorts.
They went to Chloe's hometown near Savannah for the party. Her Grandmother invited them to stay longer and to Chloe's surprise, Luke agreed to stay another few weeks. They grew closer and her family threw them together as much as they possibly could. Luke was afraid of water but Chloe got him adjusted to it. She took him out on the family boat and taught him to kayak. Luke found out that he enjoyed it very much. Chloe took him to an island and he thought that it would be the perfect location for a resort.
Luke and Chloe grew closer together and they kissed a few times. Luke found that Chloe was coming to mean more to him than he thought possible. He was still afraid to tell her about his past. He never knew his father and his mother left him when he was young. He grew up in foster homes until he ended up in a home run by Reverend Tom. Tom saw something in him and helped him until he graduated from college. He had faith in Luke and provided support giving Luke the courage to make something of himself. He reluctantly told Chloe and was surprised that she didn't turn away. Chloe revealed to him that she left her childhood home because she thought she didn't belong. She thought she wasn't good enough to be around her mother and grandmother who she thought were strong women. She lacked self confidence in herself being a strong woman.
Luke was convinced that the island owned by her father was the place that he wanted his company to build their resort. Chloe asked for time to come up with another location before Luke made an offer to her father. Luke agreed and then spoke to the owner of the resort company. He didn't want to wait and the opportunity presented itself to speak to Chloe's dad. Chloe's dad agreed to sell Luke the property mistakenly thinking that he wanted the property to build himself and Chloe a home. Luke told him that he wanted to build a hotel and Chloe's dad wouldn't back down on the agreement when he found out the truth because of his honor and pride. Chloe was really upset and was determined to change Luke's mind.
Chloe's younger brother wanted to go to work at the yacht club near their home. Luke talked to him and it gave him the courage to talk to his dad about it. His dad didn't want him to but agreed to go along with it if that was really what he wanted. Theo was also threatened by four boys one night and Luke interfered. They boys discovered that Theo wasn't alone and backed off. It was over a girl that liked him and they boys were jealous. He told his father what Luke had done and thanked Luke. Theo ended up confronting the guys the next morning at work and got a date with the girl. He really looked up to Luke until Luke convinced his father to sell him a portion of the island.
It was due to her family thinking that Luke was marrying her that had caused her father to agree to sell the land to Luke. Chloe felt so guilty that she broke down and told her family that she was only pretending to be dating Luke while he explored the area to choose a location for his company to build a resort. Chloe decided to take Luke for one last look at the island and Theo took off with their boat as they were talking. Luke was convinced for a few moments that Chloe had arranged for him to miss the signing meeting at the attorney's office. They talked and Chloe told Luke that she loved him. Their conversation caused Luke to start thinking about his life goals and what God had planned for him. He hadn't thought about God's plans for him in quite a while. He couldn't imagine his life without Chloe in it after spending so much time together. They searched the island and found Theo's boat. They took the boat back to the mainland and went to the lawyer's office to sign the papers. Luke couldn't get Chloe off his mind and didn't sign the agreement to purchase a portion of the island.
Chloe's family spoke to Chloe and convinced her to go find Luke and talk to him. Convinced her that he did the right thing in the end because he really did care for her. She prayed and then turned around to find him standing there. They talked and Luke admitted that he was in love with Chloe. They were married two months later by his Reverend Tom.

This is the third time I have read this book. I love how this family sticks together, and loves one another. And the matriarch of the family fives Bible verses to all her grandchildren. That's really cool. These books as are all of Marta Perry books are a delight to read.
