Very interesting and informative book. Naturally every biographer has their biases, but I'm prepared for that. I was perfectly happy with it until I noticed an apparent contradiction within the text!
To all appearances, this is just a paperback reissue of Battersby's 2010 work. However, I'm very confused by some details that only emerge in the final chapters.
According to the notes on jamesfitzjames.com, Battersby only got in touch with the living descendants of the families and decided he did know who Fitzjames' mother was after that publication. The early chapters here still contain the information that the Gambier's were in Brazil when Fitzjames was conceived, but the last ones refer to Hester Sterling as his mother. If he came up with this info after the 2010 book was published this paperback version must be revised after all. Just not in the early chapters where it would make most sense. Is that because they're published on Tetteroo's website? So can't be claimed by these publishers? What is going on?
Edit with added cynicism: Are they changing it just enough to extend the copyright? Given that Battersby himself is no longer with us and can't approve this edition, it's probably best to try to get the original version.
