Being a solo mum in a magical world isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
I just want what every single mum wants: to provide a happy home for my daughter and, if possible, avoid having my heart broken ever again. That plan is threatened when I land a new job as an insurance assessor working for the aloof and attractive sphinx, Altan. I can't decide if it’s the best or worst job I've ever had... it's complicated, okay?
When the sphinx assigns me to my first proper claim, I'm excited for the chance to prove myself. But it rapidly becomes clear that everything is not as it seems. I'm left with a bunch of questions. How the heck did a giant landmark disappear overnight? Are men still worth the effort? And why on earth can I suddenly talk to animals?
I figured that being an assessor in Australia would be a challenge. The spiders and snakes already want to kill me, throw in dragons and it'll be a miracle if I survive my first case...
I was lucky enough to read this for A. L. Tippett. It was so worth it, like really worth it. We start off with our heroine, Trix, a single mom, doing what all us single parents do. Working, worrying, and being there for our kids. She has a steady job, which she loves, and she meets Magicas( magical people and creatures) that appeared during what is known as The Spark, about 35ish years ago. Naturally, humans took a hot minute to get used to it, and there's still tension at times, but they live openly. Trix is an insurance adjuster and works on normals and Magica. Now, it seems to start slow and somewhat mundane, but the background info is very important in describing the world and the state of Mind of our MC. She gets some news that makes her apply for a new job, but she also does it because she had a scary moment and realized she couldn't protect her loved ones like she wants. Well, she gets the job, and hits the ground running....literally ( one of the funniest things I've read, especially since I've been there and if I had to run a mile now, I'd probably collapse). Her boss is a hottie and a Magica and is training her when they get a new case that needs to be taken care of asap. Off to the races! There are a lot of twists and turns, a decent bit of action, some feels, revelations, and intrigue. It is a very well crafted read and not easy to put down. The world building is superb, and the way society deals with it is spot on with how we are today. It can make you see things that you may gloss over and that's a good thing in this readers opinion. So, Action packed, lots of laughs, and thought provoking. All great things in a novel. Well worth the grab and read. I highly recommend this and the Aussie slang is just wonderful. Very immersive and you can feel that you're in the land down under. Grab this quickly, you will not be disappointed.
Finishing this book definitely made me annoyed that Gosh Darn Griffins (book 2) is not just waiting for me to dive in to immediately(at the time of this review). But the first book definitely earned my desire to wait for it. Trix the FMC is definitely left with a lot of questions in the end and I’m very interested in the answers as I’m sure she is.
The beginning shows the trials and tribulation that a single mother goes through. Struggling with money and trying to not let her daughter down when she needs to pay for extra curricular activities. But Trix’s life goes from cozy to life threatening over the course of the book. And she argues with a Magpie? Yes she really does….
I was lucky enough to get to read this early and grateful for the opportunity.
This hilarious book was a quick, satisfying read and escape from the doldrums of a New England winter. What better place to escape to than the Sunshine Coast of Australia? I loved the main character, Trix, who is trying to balance single motherhood with paying the bills as an insurance agent for mundanes and magicas, all while avoiding her smarmy, can't-take-no-for-an-answer boss. Except her car needs work, her daughter is growing out of her clothes, and Trix is suddenly hearing voices -- either that or a tawny frogmouth (which is definitely not an owl) is talking to her.
So what's a middle-aged mom to do? In Australia, apparently, middle-aged moms take up new extreme cardio workouts, lifting weights, wielding swords, and trying not to drool over their new sexy bosses who might or might not have fur under their fashionable, form-fitting suits. Oh yeah, and they solve mysteries and fight mother-trucking monsters. It's all in a day's work for your average Aussie insurance assessor.
If you like humorous urban fantasy with interesting, likeable, and down-to-earth female leads, slow-burn romance, and a plethora of monsters who might or might not be as dangerous as native Australian non-monster critters, this is your book. I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series!
Full disclosure: I was sent an advance reader copy of this story to review, but my opinions are my own.
Mother Trucking Monsters is book one of the Magic and Motherhood series of contemporary urban fantasies which are set in Australia.
Single mother Trix is an insurance broker, but she’s struggling to keep afloat financially. She’s tempted by an advert for an insurance assessor. The salary would be very welcome, but when you live alongside magical creatures, the job comes with swords, a high rate of danger and a boss who is a Sphinx!
After a very slow start, the story picks up when Trix begins training for her new job. The story then trots along at a better pace and includes some interesting creatures, magical beings as well as Trix’s first case that involves the loss of a giant advertising mango. The second half was definitely the saving of this book and it looks like Trix will continue her good work in book two of the series.
This popped up on my recommendations from Kindle. It is perfectly adorable! Trix is a single mom trying to keep a roof over her head and her daughter in clothes and activities. She has a job she loves but needs money as most people do. This world has magic and magical people (Magica). She applies on a whim for magical job and the adventure begins!
Honestly, I expected to like this book more based on the reviews. Mother Trucking Monsters features a former insurance broker, Trix, who takes a more lucrative insurance assessment job to improve her finances.
The problem is, the first half of the book was very slow and I wasn’t initially a fan of Trix. She obsesses over her finances to the point that it becomes extremely repetitive and boring. She’s also immature and unprofessional. Immediately after taking the new job with the sphinx, Altan, she starts having romantic thoughts about him. PLEASE.
After the halfway point where Trix starts her new job, however, the pacing improves. She is still highly impulsive, but I did like the evolution of her character—and abilities—during the course of her new line of work.
I’ll continue reading the series, but if it leans more toward this ridiculous romance, I’ll have to stop.
This was such a great story. I really enjoyed it. The characters were very intriguing and a variety of creatures which I really liked. The flow of the story was perfect and kept me turning pages. Trixie is a single mom and works hard just to make ends meet. She is close with her boss and is very good at her job. She gets to meet magicas, they are magical people and creatures that come from what they call the spark. The spark happened years ago and humans took a while to get used to the idea. Trix is an insurance adjuster who works with normals & magica. As money troubles get worse she has a scary experience that made her realize she couldn't protect her daughter or anybody else even herself. Millie her daughter gets 2 really great opportunities from school and even though Trixie knows it will be hard to scrounge up the money she agrees. Then when her boss tells her she wants to meet with her she is worried about her job. An add in the paper catches her eye so she applies. When she ends up getting the job she has to train hard. Her boss is a sphinx and he is determined to get her into shape. That's when they get their first case. Trix's first assignment was dangerous but she nailed it. This story was very entertaining and I cannot wait for more from this author.
I just finished reading “Mother Trucking Monsters” by A.L. Tippett, and let me tell you, it was an absolute blast! As the first book in the “Magic and Motherhood” series, it dives headfirst into the chaotic yet enchanting life of Trix, a single mom juggling the usual parenting woes—plus a bit of magical mayhem. The world A.L. Tippett crafts is nothing short of superb, seamlessly blending the mundane with a vibrant, magical realm that kept my imagination on its toes. Right from the start, I was hooked by the engaging and entertaining storyline filled with interesting twists and turns that kept me eager for more. And let’s not forget the humor sprinkled throughout—it provided the perfect, literally laugh-out-loud relief amidst the action-packed mystery elements. Trix is the kind of protagonist you can’t help but root for. Her journey through the ups and downs of motherhood, all while navigating a world filled with magical creatures, is inspiring and somewhat relatable. From the moment a talking bird starts invading her thoughts, to her unexpected encounter with a griffin, Trix’s life is anything but ordinary. Her resilience and determination to protect her daughter and build a stable life are themes that resonate deeply, especially with single parents or anyone balancing multiple responsibilities. The dynamic relationships she forms, particularly with the intriguing Altan, add depth and charm to the narrative. These well-developed characters make the story not just entertaining but memorable. What truly sets “Mother Trucking Monsters” apart is its fast-paced world-building and thrilling action scenes that keep the pages turning. The plot unfolded quickly, drawing me into a world where mythical beings are just part of the daily grind. Yet, amid all the magical chaos, the book also cleverly reflects on societal issues, offering thought-provoking themes of empowerment, motherhood, and resilience. Each chapter is packed with adventure, warm, fuzzy moments, and humorous dialogue that creates a delightful balance of excitement and heart. If you’re looking for a rollicking good read that combines magic, mystery, and a bit of mayhem, then “Mother Trucking Monsters” is the book for you. It’s not just a cozy urban fantasy—it’s a journey of growth, laughter, and unexpected twists that you won’t want to end. So, grab a cozy spot and dive into this enchanting world. Trust me, you won’t be able to put it down! Opinionated Book Rating: Originality: 5.0/5.0 Plot Structure: 5.0/5.0 Pacing: 5.0/5.0 Dialogue and Narrative: 5.0/5.0 Personal Enjoyment: 5.0/5.0 Overall Rating: 5.0/5.0
Beatrix Greenstone (Trix to her friends) is just your average single mom, raising a teenage daughter in the heart of Queensland, Australia, the suburb of Maroochydore. She’s a young mom, works as an insurance broker for a well-respected company, and gets to work every day with an awesome boss, Fiona, and her best friend Nichole. And she lives on the Sunshine Coast! Brilliant! Never mind that easily half of her regular clients range from pixies to demonic denizens of the Hellscape.
Since the Spark ripped a hole between the division between the mortal planes and the world of the magicas, humanity has been working on getting used to creatures once only thought as part of fantasy stories as fellow commuters on the public bus. Of course, humanity isn’t great at pulling their mortal heads out of their butts and adjusting to the new normal in any way quickly, but things have progressed... slowly. As an insurance broker that services both humans and magica, Trix works with and alongside both sets every day and isn’t plagued by bias against the magica, honestly she doesn’t really understand why most people are. She works to help her clients be taken care of the way they need and to raise her one and only daughter, Millie, though to say life is "paycheck-to-paycheck.” would be an understatement.
After a gryphon attack in the middle of Millie’s netball competition, Trix is determined not to be caught flatfooted in times of danger ever again. On a whim, she applies for an open position with MagicAssess Insurance Co., as an assessor. Not only is it a potential pay hike (woo!), but she’ll also be learning some basic combat skills, you know, for the assessment claims. Who doesn’t think archery and swordsmanship skills when looking into a damaged treehouse? Her new boss, Atlan is sure to make things interesting.
“Mother Trucking Monsters” is the first book in the “Magic and Motherhood” series by A.L. Tippett, Australia native and mom extraordinaire! The writing is punchy and fun, the humor is on-point, and Trix’s voluntary use of replacement terms instead of swear words results in HILARIOUS expressions at times when everyone else would cuss a blue streak. The characters are immediately likeable; the story flies by, and it’s simply too much fun to put down! I highly recommend this novel, 10/10, make sure to check it out!
I received a free copy of this ebook/audiobook and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I downloaded a free copy of this book from the author and wanted to share my thoughts with you on this awesome book!
Mother Trucking Monsters Fabulous and feisty, Trix is not afraid to stand up for what she wants, and what she wants most of all is for her daughter Millie to be happy and safe, with all the opportunities she didn’t have growing up. While she loves her job in the insurance brokers and (most) of the people she works with, it’s a struggle to pay the bills, so when she sees an insurance assessor’s job in a company email she’s tempted…very tempted. Yes the role has risks - you never know when you may have to fight off a rogue witch or magical creature - but there’s a substantial pay increase to go with it which would give Trix just what she needs - financial certainty. After an incident leaves Trix feeling helpless to protect herself and her daughter, she vows to never put herself in that position again, and sends off her résumé for the assessor’s role. After all, there may be risks, but there’s also combat training. There’s just one ‘tiny’ hitch…her new boss is the smokin’ hot sphinx magica who just saved Trix and Millie from certain death!
This is a truly magical read. Set in Australia, this cozy urban fantasy has all the feels…a feisty and fabulous female MC with an inventive vocab, a hot, sexy and somewhat grumpy new boss. With a slow-burn romance and a different take on a magical community. Oh, and a giant mango!
I loved every minute of Mother Trucking Monsters, and can’t wait for more of Trix’s adventures.
What an amazing series starter! After reading The MINATH Chronicles trilogy, A. L. Tippett is an auto-buy for me, so it’s not a surprise but gosh did I love how quickly I fell in love with this world 💕
The series is set on the Sunshine Coast of Australia in an open magic world, complete with threats ranging from prejudice to life-or-death. Trix is our main character. She’s a single mother who is feeling the pinch of the cost of living - or as us Aussies say it, ‘cozzie livs’ so she takes up a job assessing insurance fraud.
It turns out that assessing insurance fraud is much more dangerous than it sounds. Between getting fit, learning how to deal with wild magica, being a Mum, and working out who stole Bowen’s Big Mango, Trix has her hands full.
Although I’m pretty sure she’d make room for Altan, her dedicated but unmistakably hot Sphinx boss. The slow-burn there is divine!
My absolute favourite part of this book is Trix. A. L. Tippett has, without a doubt created a character that is super relatable, as a mid-thirties solo Mum with kids myself, while also giving her a depth of character that steps beyond motherhood. I loved the reflection that Trix maintains throughout the book, as she finds her way through challenges that are both mundane and magical. It reminds me a lot of the characters in Heather G Harris’ series, but with their own unique Aussie twist, which is one of the highest compliments I can give!
The story itself is exciting and interesting with a great plot and lots of fun surprises along the way. Not to mention there are some really enticing questions that aren’t quite answered in this first book.
It’s definitely got me hooked and hanging for the next book to come out, that’s for sure!
Trix is a single mother, who needs a little more income to help pay for those things she wants to give her daughter. A new job as an assistant for the magical insurance assessors seems to be the perfect answer. Of course, life doesn’t usually go that smoothly…
This is a brand new series, and a brand new author, and quite honestly the book is an excellent start! Trix is an enjoyable character, slightly neurotic, and with secrets even she knows nothing about! I loved her friendly acceptance of people (though she may be somewhat naïve about it), her love of her daughter, and her firm denial of things she doesn’t want to think about (it made me chuckle). She’s definitely a character that the mothers out there will find themselves resonating with. The world building is good, though I definitely want to hear more about the “Spark”, and I enjoyed the wide variety of magical beings- again, I’d love to hear more about them. I did have to laugh at the magpie description in the book; I might be an Englishwoman in the USA, but my sister in Australia has told us about them- and that description matched the scene in the book all too well!
Ultimately, this was a very enjoyable read, with an intriguing heroine, and some fascinating secondary and side characters. I look forward to finding out just what is going on with Trix and her mysterious abilities, and seeing where she and Altan end up heading next. This is en entertaining, and quite unique Urban Fantasy for UF fans. Set in Australia, it will be enjoyed by urban fantasy loving armchair travellers, as well as those who enjoy UF with a little older heroine (Trix is 35).
Not long ago I got to read my first UF with a proper adult female lead, and now I've been introduced to another! It's lovely to have more of these.
Trix, a 30+ something single mother, lives a very mundane life in a world where a magical realm has blended into ours around the time she was born. Things start to unravel via some encounters with some magicas and her money troubles push her into looking for new career opportunities.
The story flows well and grabs your attention. I was saveing the last bit to read it with my full wits instead of half asleep -- otherwise I would've finished this yesterday. Trix is also in my opinion a great protagonist, and I'm glad to see her being an amazing mother!
What I personally was not so fond of: The assumed future romantical partner being Altan, the sphinx. I had a bit of a kneejerk negative reaction to him being it, since I'm he feels a bit too animalistic with cat ears, tail and some fur. So those who do not like this sort of thing; skip this one, since the setup is for the slow burn romance to be between Trix and Altan. Curious note on this for myself though: I do not have the same reaction if it would've been an elf. Yet that also is another species.
Then a bit of a spoiler, which I recommend skipping if you plan on reading this!
If I have a make myself go to bed, because it’s silly o’clock, but I’d really much rather finish the book I’m reading, then it’s definitely 5 star worthy!
The first in a new series is filled with so much anticipation and hope for me as a reader and Mother Trucking Monsters did not disappoint. Urban fantasy is a genre I really enjoy, but add into that a strong female lead, who is old enough to have learned a little about life and has lots to offer, then things are already looking good.
Trix hasn’t been dealt an easy hand by life, but she certainly isn’t a quitter. Her daughter is her priority in life, which leads her to consider a better paid and more exciting/dangerous line of work. The magical world is already a part of life for Trix, but she is about to learn a lot more about magic in her new job. Alongside that she may be about to learn more about herself and possibly let love into her life again, as her boss has certainly made an impact on her.
A strong and independent woman, who trusts her instincts. An enigmatic and attractive Sphinx as a boss. Good supportive roles from daughter, friends and colleagues. Magical adventures. Mysteries to be solved. Slow burn romance. Lots of fun and laughter (and very inventive substitutions for bad language!) along the way.
What’s not to love? I’m really looking forward to the next book in the series!
“Mother Trucking Monsters”, first in the 'Magic and Motherhood' series, has a very slow start and doesn't ever really kick into high gear. It's described as a cosy mystery and it most certainly is, despite a warning from the author that “There are a few F-bombs scattered within these pages.” For the record it occurs 11 times in 223 pages. Australian Beatrix (Trix) is a single mum with a 15-year-old daughter and a dead-end job as an insurance broker. Money is tight and and getting tighter so she gets a new job as a trainee insurance assessor for MagicAssess. Magic is the keyword as the series is predicated on 'The Spark' in which magical being of all kinds revealed themselves to humans some decades earlier. They are, of course, treated by many as second class citizens and worse. Her partner and trainer is a Sphinx called Altan who is initially gruff and uncommunicative. He does lighten up somewhat towards the end. Not surprisingly, given the nature of the book, Trix also discovers that she has some latent magic. Answers, however, as to why are slow to come. Their first real job is to investigate the disappearance of a sculpture known as the Big Mango. Was it theft or magic? It was an enjoyable light read but I suspect that had it been darker it would have been better. 3 Stars.
This was a fun new series! Trix is a single mom in her 30's working in insurance with a teenage daughter, Millie. They live in a world where magic is out in the open in Australia. After Millie is recommended for 2 special programs, they go out to celebrate and a dryad does something to Trix's mind. Suddenly she can talk to birds! And she accepts a new job as an insurance assessor, which despite the sound of it, is far from boring! Her life has suddenly taken a turn towards interesting! Trix is a take charge, independent woman who will not swear! And I find this super amusing since one of the "swears" I use in my house is mother trucker! So now I have a few more to add to that list! She genuinely cares about people and wants to do the right thing. I love the relationship she has with her daughter as well. There are many different types of magical beings in this book that I would never have dreamed of myself! I always love reading about new magical beings so this book had me hooked! And if that wasn't enough, they are on the hunt to find missing giant mango!! The plot was closed up nicely and it was left open enough to have me anxiously waiting for the next book to find out more about these strange magical powers that Trix has! And what will happen with her boss!
This book follows Trix, a 40+ single mom, who suddenly can "talk to animals," and follows her as she starts a new job. Did I mention that this book is has magic out in the open. It's not hidden, and neither are the prejudices, that come with there being all manner of magical beings everywhere you look.
In this book magis is not hidden, and neither are the prejudices that come with there being all manner of magical beings everywhere you look. I loved the conversations this brought up.
The story is set in Australia which was fun, and a nice change of pace for UF readers, like me. This story starts with Trix and her new partner on the hunt for who stole The Big Mango statue (real, I googled it, and it looks like this.)
Overall, it was a fun story, with engaging characters (I especially love Trix's daughter and BFF) and world building that felt new to me.
I've already pre-orders the next book, which sadly doesn't come out for some time.
I chose the book based on both the title and the pretty hilarious cover art. I was hoping for a bit more humor, but overall, the writing was pretty good. The originality of the plot and the world building was even better. I still don't have a good picture of what Trix looks like though. The other characters are given a bit better description. Described as a cozy mystery, it was well laid out with the paranormal characters and setting. The romance hit a little too soon and too hard which was a bit disappointing. The fmc, Trix, is primarily focused on her daughter as well as making enough money for them to live comfortably. As the story unfolds (a little slowly at first) Trix begins to discover hidden magick talents - leaning druid way - that both mystify and save her. Her boss is the love interest which I had a bit of trouble with based on her "petting his fur and wondering how much of his body is covered with it". The ending was a little abrupt but did set up for the next book. I did enjoy the book and am interested in book 2.
A great start to a new series. Meet Trix, a single mother struggling financially to make sure her daughter has a good start in life. Because of unexpected additional expenses and an encounter with an angry Griffon, Trix applies for a new job, without being sure she can make the grade. An odd meeting with a druid results in Trix being able to speak to animals, without knowing how or why.
This story is set in the modern world, but one filled with magic creatures. At the beginning we find Trix filling out an insurance claims form for a demon who has had his electric generator nicked! One of her new friends is an elf and her new boss is a sphinx. The characters are likeable, especially Trix, who has a colourful volcabulary to avoid swearing!
The end leaves us (and Trix) with a lot of unanswered questions, and a longing to dive into the next book to find the answers. This promises to be an excellent series.
Thank you to A.L. Tippett for the advanced reviewer's copy. I am choosing to leave a fair and honest review.
This was a delightfully fun, adventurous trip through a magical Australia! Several years after the Spark (a rift in the space-time continuum that released a multitude of magical creatures onto Earth), Beatrix is slogging along at her job at an insurance company while trying to raise her daughter, Matilda, on her own. Money is tighter than tight, so when she is offer the opportunity of a larger salary as an Insurance Assessor, she takes it. But it comes with more than she expected, including a sexy if distant Sphinx boss.
The story is delightful with a funny narrator who is a full on adult, something that is getting rarer in the UF genre. While there is sexual tension, we aren't beaten over the head with it. The story has enough twists and turns, with the mystery being solved at the very end, to keep most readers involved.
After meeting the author at a festival, not only did I buy the hard cover version of The MINATH Chronicles trilogy I had just read on kindle, I also bought the hardcover of #mothertruckinmonsyers. And I’m so glad I did- I loved it (and the print quality of the book is fantastic too!) The title is in reference to our heroines inability to swear. Trix is a single mother living in Australia’s Sunshine Coast trying to raise her daughter on a tight budget while struggling to make sure she doesn’t miss out.
When the opportunity comes for a better paying job she moves from the insurance office to a job in the field. With a sphinx boss. Who’s kind of demanding. And hot!
The pair travel north to try to discover who’s stolen Bowen’s Big Mango, and face magical dangers, including giant spiders….
lovley to read a book set in North Queensland, where I now live, and to have one with such relatable Aussie characters (and language). Can’t wait for the next instalment!
What a fun book, set in Australia, there are wonderful names for the towns – the main town is Maroochydore – just love it. This is set in a world where the magical beings came out about 35 years ago and are living with the regular humans. Beatrix, Trix for short, is an insurance agent, a single mother who is always trying to make ends meet. She is also trying make sure she doesn’t swear – as is show in the book title. After a run in with a griffin at her daughter’s netball game. Trix decides to apply for a job as an insurance assessor. It pays more and she would learn self defense. The only problem is her immediate boss, Ardin, a griffin. Trix doesn’t know if she should be mad at him or attracted to him. This book doesn’t have action but it has surprises and a mystery as well as humour and a possible romance. There are interesting characters and a great story. On to the next book.
A fun read that combined several of my favourite elements: - a strong sense of place (Australia- language, geography, flora and fauna) - a good ensemble of characters (boss, best friend, daughter, as well as the main characters) - some real life ‘dull’ professions (in this case insurance) - MC with some life experience already - 30/40+ urban fantasy is great - plot that isn’t too heavy or too light - a smidge of romantic tension, but definitely on the slow burn, with a slightly grumpy male MC. Within 5% of the book I was really enjoying the world building which is always a great start. Hoping that a long series is planned for this world - it’s a great start. (I’m trying to save 5 stars for stand out fantastic books to make it easier for me to search through my GR catalogue - this is a very solid read though and I did think about giving it a 5 - perhaps later in the series)
This one had me absolutely hooked within the first few chapters!
This book is set in modern Australian where humans live alongside magica. The main character, Trix, is a single mum working as an insurance broker. She is given an opportunity to better provide for her daughter by taking a job as an assessor for MagicAssess, which deals exclusively with insurance claims lodged by magica. Her first big case is to assess the disappearance of the Big Mango in Bowen. Now, being from North Queensland myself, I can say that the Big Mango is a staple of any road trip, so to have that go missing is an absolute tragedy!
This book has the great world building which is to be expected from any A.L. Tippett novel. There is action! There is suspense! There is a broody and mysterious MMC! And it's bloody Australian through and through!
Mother Trucking Monsters is a gloriously fun, carnival ride of a cosy urban fantasy!!
This story is an attention-grabber for me because it's set in my country, and while I don't live in Queensland as Trix does, it all translates. I loved the use of the vernacular and revelled in the oh-so-familiar quips. The world-building is authentic and the magic overlaid onto it just adds more zing, sometimes literally! The characters are brilliant and I especially enjoyed the strong friendships and support between our FMC and her friends.
I don't think overseas readers will struggle with the slang and dry humour, as it has not been overdone for comedic or dramatic effect.
I was so impressed with this book that I immediately ordered book 2! Do your TBR a favour and add Mother Trucking Monsters to it.
This was good, it was a very good first novel. The author shows a lot of genuine talent and I am adding her to my list of favorites. I’m not familiar with Australia (Crocodile Dundee would be my point of reference) or Australian slang but I liked it. It seemed authentic to me. I think she could have been a little less heavy handed in the “they like like each other” clues but that seemed more a lack of experience rather than poor writing. To further date myself, I give it a 85, it was fun and you could dance to it. I’m looking forward to the next book. Please read this one and support new author that shows a lot of promise(fyi for what it’s worth- I read a lot of books- like 1-2 books a day) not everything I read is worth reviewing. But this was good. Please keep writing
I have more than enough books to keep me entertained, but this book seemed intriguing, so I requested it. I didn’t know it, but it was just the book I needed. This is a well-written, fun, and light-hearted book about a single mom worried about the things single moms worry about. This is almost a prequel, but not in a bad way. She gets a new job after deciding her life needs to change, and we see her in her new job. We’re given intriguing hints about how something is funky about her past, and that there is a lot more to come in future books. I loved this series beginner, and I am wanting to read more in this fun universe. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
I really enjoyed this book. Once I started I just could not stop until I’d finished it!
Trix is a single mother whose world revolves around her daughter but like many struggles financially. Determined not to let her daughter down, taking the opportunities open to her and putting herself out there leads her to new adventures.
It was great getting to know Trix the FMC and the rest of the characters. All characters were really well described and I felt like I was right there watching it all! Which I love in a book! Another thing I loved was how much value was placed on friendship!
There is a lot we learn and a lot of answers not yet know. I cannot wait for the second book in this new series to see what happens next.
This book was so fun. I just sat back, let the hijinx commence and I giggled my way through!
I've never read a UF about an insurance adjustor, so that was an refreshing take! The stakes are low for the world, but high for our heroine, Trix. She has a good job, but it's a struggle to get by, and if she wants better for her daughter she's got to up her game.
She does, although she isn't very qualified, but she is willing and able, and that's half the battle. The other half is literal battle but if she survives, she'll learn!
This was a rollicking good time, it was warm and fuzzy, but with a lot of action, tons of adventure, and plenty of monsters. Just a good, fun, read and who doesn't want that in the end?
