MASHLE: Magic and Muscles is a popular manga series published in Shonen Jump that follows the story of Mash Burnedead, a magicless protagonist in a world full of magic. The manga is a comedy with a vibe akin to a mashup of One Punch Man and Harry Potter. The story is set in a world where magic is everything, and those who don’t possess it are considered weak. The Divine Visionary exam is over, and with the Wand of Beginnings in Innocent Zero's posession the decision has been called off. While Innocent Zero and his allies focus on preparing an attack, Mash and his friends work to strengthen themselves to fight against them. This volume is very much a transitional period between the Divine Visionary exam and the final act of the series, which will no doubtedly be where they face off against each villain one by one until Innocent Zero and his forces are gone. I thought this volume was pretty fun and cheeky compared to the rest, and I can't help but wonder if the kids are supposed to be on a break or something because they just casually have been training over the span of a month.
One exciting thing we got in this volume was the introduction of Mistress Meliadoul, who might be one of my favorite characters so far. I mentioned in my review of volume 8 that I was hoping that we would get to meet the third pupil of Adam Jobs's, and I was not disappointed. I think part of the reasonI like her so much is because of her very bizarre introduction with her chainsaw of rejuvination(?!), but I also like how, compared to other characters, her true power hasn't been shown yet. Of course we know she's even more powerful that Wahlberg, somehow, which is only expected for one of Adam's pupils, but we only see a glimmer of her skill. Wahlberg himself has had a similar buildup as well where we didn't get to see his might for quite a while. I also like her because she's just about the humblest character so far which is quite a relief after reading about 10,000 other characters who don't do anything BUT boast and brag. She's much more mysterious and collected than the rest, and I think her intense healing powers through unconventional means are quite interesting. It made me think of that one bit in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.
I'm also glad that we got a new powerful character who's female because there are almost no girls in this series. There's Lemon, who doesn't do much, and one (possibly two) of the Divine Visionaries who haven't even done anything yet are girls. And just about every other character that I think is female is just a guy who dresses femininely.
I thought Mash's section of the story was pretty fun even though we didn't get to see nearly as much of what he was doing as I would have liked. Mistress Meliadoul, Ochoa, and Ryoh are quite the team as they coach Mash, and Ryoh in particular was quite funny. He was the opposite of Meliadoul and essentially saw him as God's gift to man, which I would argue that he CLEARLY is. Obviously this isn't the first time he's been introduced, but I liked getting a bit of a light shone on him. I thought the chapter cover art that was designed to be a magazine cover was pretty funny. Safe to say that Dot wouldn't like him. Speaking of Dot, I also liked that him, Lance, and Finn got their own trainings as well. I would have loved to have spent more time seeing specificly what they had been going through. What did Dot and Lance do with Orter after their first challenge? And more importantly, how on Earth did they do it for several days straight? Did they take sleep breaks or is Orter a vampire or something? We saw even less of what Finn was doing with Kaldo, although his seemed more of a mental training because that's where his strenghts are clearly. Even though we didn't see much of what they were doing, I suppose we get the gist of it well enough.
The only major issue I had with this volume was that the pacing was extremely strange. For the most part we didn't really see exactly what they were all doing, which I can assume is a lot like we've seen from the earlier volumes, so I'm not too upset that we skipped parts of it. It was just strange that we would jump between characters while they were in between trainings and we'd be told that an entire month had passed. It just felt disjointed, and I cannot really grasp how Mash was fighting those guard things for almost an entire month. It just felt strange and made the chapters feel sporadic and disjointed, but I suppose that's to be expected considering that an entire month was compressed into one volume.
Although hands down the BEST part of this volume was that weird-ass poll, which isn't even part of the story. I don't know what floors me the most, the fact that the main villain of the of the series got FOURTY-SECOND, that Kaldo got second even though I swear he's barely done anything, or the fact that they clearly included every single entry, even the ones that aren't really "characters". Absolute tomfoolery, and I am here for it.

- The student who threatened to report Mash (I would have voted for this guy lol)

- The walls of Easton Academy
- Jon Pierre's fork
- NOM NOM NOM NOM
- Komoto Sensei's parents
- The girl who said, "It's Tom! He was last year's Duelo MVP!"
I had a lot of fun with this volume, clearly, and I am really enjoying this series. I can't wait to keep reading this and seeing where this is going, especially now that Mash is currently out of the picture. It will be up to the other characters to keep things at bay until he can return, especially now that all of Innocent Zero's sons are joining the fight.

This volume opens with the conclusion (though to me not definitive) between Mash and Doom. This small break serves as the point in which creator Hajime Komoto has been stating for a little while now, that the story is growing closer to its conclusion. As strong as Mash is…he knows he must get much stronger in the next 30 days! Feel free to play the Rocky soundtrack in the background as you read this volume of Mashle because that’s the grit and workout you should expect to see. He’s not the only one preparing for this climactic battle. Great art and I found myself enjoying seeing everyone training and a little less one on one battles. Another solid volume in this wildly entertaining series.

1. I have a strong guess as to what's going to happen with Finn in the final arc of this manga based on the foreshadowing of this volume, so let me write it down here to lock in my guess: I'll come back once I'm done with the series and see if I was right XD

This volume provides some more backstory for Zero as we begin to understand the series (or at least this arcs) big bad. More worldbuilding and general character building is being built out. It’s clear that the author has created an immersive and expansive world that we are getting to see more of in these recent volumes. We’re heading toward a big fight and important plot points for this series and I’m excited to see where it goes next. So far this series has done a great job of balancing the humor with series stakes and battles.

So Mashle reaches it's climax. This has been an incredibly fun series. I always thought it would run longer, but in today's Shonen Jump, 100+ chapters is still impressive. I'm interested to exactly how many volumes we have left, as all that was said by Komoto was that we were in the final arc. Regardless, I'm enjoying myself.

Mash, Lance, Dot and Finn must train hard within one month before Innocent Zero opens a world of darkness alongside his sons. Mash is in the hands of Lady Melidoul while Lance and Dot are under Orter Madl. Oh, Finn is with Kaldo and not sure what happens to Lemon. This is getting better each volume so five out of five stars.

L’univers de Mash ne cesse de me surprendre ! Hajime Komoto a une imagination débordante qui ne cesse de s’amplifier. Le personnage de Mash est constamment mis à l’épreuve et continue de s’améliorer à chaque page, chaque tome. J’ai hâte de voir certaines scènes à l’écran car elles sont énorme! Ça annonce du lourd.

In diesem Band wird viel trainiert, da es bald in Richtung finalem Kampf geht. Dabei werden die Stärken der einzelnen ausgebaut. Es ist interessant zu sehen was man sich hier hat einfallen lassen. Die Trainingsmethoden sind auf jeden Fall speziell. Auch hier gibt es zum Ernst der Lage noch eine Prise Humor, was die Reihe einfach aus macht.
