admittedly not a huge fan of the chika-must-diet subplot but the rest is fun as usual

Omg, the board game chapter ALONE is worth five stars! I actually had to stop reading to catch my breath from laughing so hard. This series never ceases to make me laugh until I'm crying and I cannot be more grateful for that.

While I have qualms about Nagisa giving Kaguya a porn DVD to watch and calling it "sex education," considering that's something a normal teenager would do AND it's proven that the students at this school tend to be a wee bit...sheltered, I'm willing to let that slide. Also, the "advice" Ishigami and Miyuki give to Maki regarding mens' sexual impulses and virginity is clearly NOT meant to be taken seriously so I'm cool with that too. Besides, both Ishigami's and Miyuki's reactions are so consistent with their characters it would be weird for them to give some speech about purity and true love. The cherry on top, though, is Chika's reaction to their "advice". Never thought I'd see the day where Chika was scared of romance talk, but here we are.

The flashback scene between Maki and Kaguya was really sad, it breaks my heart seeing two young girls become enemies at a young age due to their families' dark past. It also further explains why Kaguya is who she is and reinforces what a terrible clan she was born into. Side note, her brother also sounds like a massive bag of dicks, I feel so bad she's related to him.

And finally, Miyuki and Kaguya's relationship continues to be put to the test this volume, but the prank chapter in the beginning was so well handled and showed more of Kaguya's mischievous side. But more importantly, their phone conversation towards the end of the volume was so damn cute and precious, I fell in love with these two all over again! I really hope they can overcome these hurdles and live happily in the end. Just let my babies be happy, dammit!

That's all I've got without writing a five page essay about what I loved about this volume. Sad I have to wait so long for the next volume, but I will stay strong! All for my dysfunctional babies!

The main thing I love about the Love Is War is that generally the side character are as strong, if not better (!), than the main characters 🥰 makes for such an enjoyable read and I will definitely be watching the anime as well in the future

Kaguya is the vice president of their prestigious academy’s student council and she's in love with, Miyuki, the president, and he with her! BUT both are well aware that in love there is always a winner... and neither wants to be the "loser!" As both are geniuses and quite proud they spend each day laying in wait for an opportunity to get the other to confess without losing face... only Chika, their secretary and Ishigami, their treasurer, seem ready to innocently mess up their careful machinations.

This wasn’t my most favorite volume. It felt really aimless and not all of it was funny. I actually can enjoy the random chapters when they’re laugh out loud but when they fall flat story momentum can totally save a volume. We do let a certain family know of the new developments with Kaguya and Miyuki but that was really all. I wanted a bit more.

There were a lot of chapters devoted to the other members of the student council. I enjoy this normally but I was really jonezing for more Kaguya and Miyuki cuteness. Still I did enjoy the developments with Ishigami who seems to be the man of the hour right now.

Book: Kaguya-sama: Love is War, Vol. 17

Author: Aka Akasama

Rating: 4 Out of 5 Stars

I am still enjoying this series. I am enjoying getting to see all of the relationships take off and develop over time. We are still in the early stages of the relationship, but I can see how things are trying to come together.

I do find, though, that this whole sequence has been a little anti-climactic. We have had this big build up for well over a hundred chapters and it just feels like it was all for nothing at times. Yet, I do understand it. Our characters have never really dated before and now they find themselves in situations that they have never been in. I do believe that the author is doing this on purpose. If things were rushed, then it would not work and it would not fit the characters. It’s just one of those things that makes it very difficult to figure out how to strike that balance.

The author, once again, does an amazing job at showing us all of this through the artwork. The artwork still is simple, but it adds so much. We get to see the awkwardness of teenage relationships. They don’t know how to act around each other yet and are still trying to figure out how to act around each other.

Overall, I am still having a great time with this series.

This volume marks a new shift in the story. I am assuming the person reading this has already read the previous volumes, so what I am about to say is fine. We reach a new shift because Kaguya and Shirogane are now dating, Ishigami has his eyes set on making Tsubame confess, and Iino’s moral compass is beginning to skew. All of these developments are such a different change of pace, but it’s still good!

If you do not know: This series follows the members of the student council at an elite school. President Shirogane and Vice-President Kaguya like one another, but neither want to be the one to confess their love first. So, the battle of the brains begins as they try to make the other person confess. Very funny, cute, and at times, moving.

I feel like I don’t have much to say about this volume. It feels like the chapters here are laying down the foundation for future developments and story arcs. However, I will say that I loved the chapters with Maki and Kaguya because Maki is my cinnamon bun child. Also, the very last chapter with the board game club is peak comedy. Such a fun time.

Overall, gave this volume 3.9, but rounding up to 4 stars!

A whole bunch on stuff happens, but without a narrative throughline, are the day to day antics of the school enough to make a fulfilling volume? Let’s get (sex) educated with the latest Kaguya-sama!

So, spoiler, the answer is no. There is a lot of delicious gristle in this volume, but there isn’t much of anything by way of meat. Combined with stuff that doesn’t work and you have a very uneven volume.

I think the strongest chapter is the one where Yu finds fitness and leans into every awful habit of anybody who has gotten hardcore into a fitness regime. It’s also the story that makes the best use of Fujiwara, whose reasons for her protestations cap the chapter off perfectly.

Close second is the Mio and Miyuki bonding story, which deliberately moves at a snail’s pace, but then gets silly, then turns into crazy dark hilarity. It has a very lame punchline, but the dark parts are funny enough to carry it.

A lot of the problem is set-up or payoff in a lot of chapters that doesn’t justify the end results or the journey. Fujiwara’s miserable new game is pretty funny, especially the way it dumps on the Yu/Mio story from last time, but it isn’t half as good as the last time this idea was trotted out.

Similarly, the side story about the game club is built upon the hoariest of cliches and is so incredibly rote, but it manages to escalate into the best punchline in the book because of how crazy it gets.

And without the ridiculous DVD involved, I feel the whole story about Kaguya learning about sex is a huge wasted opportunity that could really have been something hilarious. Instead it is a somewhat dramatic okay sort of thing.

3 stars. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect a lot more from a series that has so effortlessly blended comedy and a compelling narrative. This lacks that, plus it no longer has the competition angle to fall back on. I didn’t think this could hope to compare to the last volume, but I don’t think I was wrong to expect a bit more than this.

Guttedddddd that I have to wait a week for Volume 18 to arrive (thanks, never-ending Viz paper shortage!) but them's the breaks. Volume 17 feels like a conscious dive into more 'minor' territory - a return to the fluff parade to satisfy the audience after a lot of drama. It's nice stuff, but the best chapters are still the ones with a point of tension to them: stuff like Kaguya subverting Chika's birthday surprise (bizarre!) or Miyuki trying to talk to Mike about poetry (excruciating!). Chapters showing us Kaguya and Miyuki's first phone are nice and all, but they're pretty low-drama, and the other chapters aren't quite exciting enough for the fluff to provide a contrast. Love is War's romance always came from a place of conflict, and whilst I'm delighted to finally receive payoff to that, I wonder how Akasaka is planning to keep the core relationship feeling vital, given how easy its going to be for Ishigami and Iino to overwhelm them. Maybe there'll be more of a focus on keeping the relationship secret? Or maybe they are just going to take a backseat to the side-cast for a little while. Right now, things aren't totally clear just yet.

This volume feels a little less “amped” from the previous one in a lot of respects. I would argue it is falling back into the familiar flow and issues of the previous volumes and makes volume 16 feel like the outlier. This one had some more tame interactions, but they were very fulfilling. I don’t know when it happened, but I would argue that the side characters have become the true story…or rather instead of it being a side-story…it is equal to the main story! The interactions are nothing short of grand and the way everyone interacts you truly feel as if these individuals exist. Another solid volume with a few “ahhh” moments. Aka Akasaka keeps this series running amazing! Kudos to the author/artist.

Moving on from their eventful winter breaks, now Kaguya and Miyuki are back in the Student Council but they are keeping their relationship on the down low. Kaguya manages to brag about it, though, using Chika's penchant for pranks and games. Hayasaka is a bit tired of her bragging, though, so Kaguya turns to Kashiwagi for some advice and finds out that maybe hers and Miyuki's relationship didn't follow the typical route (but who cares if they kissed first etc?). But my favorite chapters were the ones about interactions between Miyuki and Ino (who finally find something they have in common, but Miyuki blows it by not being THAT into poetry) and Kaguya and Maki (we got to know about their family ties, the reasons for the animosity between them and a hilarious incident of them getting some sex ed lol).

Kaguya-sama does it again! I loved this volume! The fact that Kaguya and Miyuki are dating but they’re hiding it from their friends is so cute. The part when they called each other and stayed up all night talking to each other was one of the cutest scenes ever. Also Kei is super excited about his brother’s new relationship. The “I love you” game was a great addition, Ishigami is so cute, even when Fujiwara said I love you, he blushed a lot because he’s not used to being told that. Also, when during the game Kaguya said “I like you so much, Shirogane”, he blushed so so so much it was the cutest! I’m excited to see what happens next!

4 stars.

They literally watched a porn video lmao... those poor things. It's really exciting how despite Kaguya and Shirogane getting together, the story is still so entertaining and fun. I like that we get to see their dynamic as a couple instead of them getting together at the end of the series and we are seeing the dynamics of the side characters evolve and change as well. I loved seeing Shirogane trying to bond with Ino over poetry. I also loved the bonus story with the board game club and "making babies". This series is too silly

This one had its fun moments, though it was a little spicier than its predecessors in the most awkward way possible and I can’t keep track of the amount of times I felt secondhand embarrassment on behalf of literally every character, heh. It felt more filleresque than the last volume, which was much heavier on plot and character development; there’s definitely a place for that, but I was not a huge fan of some of the gags - hoping the next volume will be a little more on the serious/emotional side.

That one went a little off the rails around the midpoint. But I giggled like an idiot, so I can't really blame it in honest. Plus the nightly scene between our two MCs was really sweet. (I didn't want to spoil it, but now it sounds oddly ominous 😅)

Yeah, it's peak. Absolutely hilarious volume, abit to high on the "indecent" part, but that's just the charm, and boy the chapter where Shirogane and Shinomiya talks over the phone and later Miyuki's Sister and Dad spook him was too good, it's 5:20am and I laughed so hard I cannot explain.
