Helped our understanding of the importance of childhood experiences in the development of the adult personality, the existence of the unconscious and its huge influence over human behaviour, the way we all use endless defence mechanisms to protect our egos (repression, denial, displacement, projection, fantasy, rationalisation, regression, reaction formation), the importance of dreams in understanding our true thoughts and feelings and the fact that talking about a problem often leads to helping to sort it out.

For those who love to delve deeper into human nature, Freud is the absolute starting line. Whether you agree with him or not is another matter but listening to what he says is requirement nay a rite of passage.
However, it is not easy to read Freud, given his literary style belonging to that of early 20th century. Trust me, I am yet to complete his books "Psychopathology of everyday life" and "Interpretation of dreams" six years after buying them. It is in this light that "Understanding Freud" come so handy. A bite sized book which sails through all the important points of Freud's life, work, friendships and his influence over the understanding of human nature. It took me roughly two hours to finish this book and I ended it feeling very refreshed and armed with confidence to hold my own when discussing Freud.
This book by Ruth Snowden is wonderfully written and almost as an tribute to the master that Freud was.
Please read this book, available only as ebook I believe, to know who Freud was and what he had to say and then proceed to read more from him directly.
