A Curse of Mist and Shadows

Rate this book
Darkness creeps ever closer. The unlikely alliance between the Silver Elven dragonmistress, Dulcea Lightbringer, and vampire lord Krath has faded into legend, their triumph over the demon king Grom as fabled as their forbidden romance. The dragons have gone, and the peace that followed the famous rebellion is coming to a dark stop.

Amidst this impending doom stands Garth, a half-elf leading a quiet life until a self-carved fate forces him to confront a future he never imagined. Drawn into a web of intrigue that spans ages, Garth finds himself at the forefront of a catastrophe that threatens to repeat history and unveil its foregone protectors once more.

But what role does Garth play in this ancient conflict? And what sinister force is awakening to plunge the countries of Caeryn into a darkness they have never known?

As Garth’s journey unfolds, the currents of history converge with present-day perils, and the fate of Caeryn rests in the hands of those who dare to rise above their limitations. Alongside a courageous princess, two adventurous sea elves, a chatty faerie, and many others, Garth must embrace the untapped potential within him if he is to keep the encroaching shadows at bay.

“I live in my own little world. But it’s ok, they know me here.” (Who besides me has this fridge magnet; raise your hand!)

That’s sometimes what it feels like. Who says stories aren’t real? I live in the land of the Midnight Sun and Polar Nights, together with my husband and daughter, and a cast of fantasy characters running around in my head. It’s busy here. Care to stay and chat a while?

Laura Maybrooke is an 80s’ child, who works too much and writes too little, but who’ll never say no to a thrilling romance, a high fantasy adventure, or a cookbook full of delicious treats she’d like to bake one day.

If you are in the mood for a good old epic quest with surprises in every chapter, a versatile set of characters – think a tiny faerie who can’t hold his tongue – and the unknown evil which seems impossible to defeat, this book is for you.

It was exciting to return to the world of the Silver Elven dragonmistress, Dulcea Lightbringer, and vampire lord Krath from the Dulcea’s Rebellion series. Since I loved the first trilogy, I was glad to ‘meet’ Dulcea and Krath again on the pages of “A Curse of Mist and Shadows”, even though they aren’t the main characters of this story. Especially since the protagonist Garth proved to be no less interesting.

Garth is half-elf and half-human, but apart from this and the fact that he looks like a full-blooded elf, his life is calm and boring. Until the moment he takes something that isn’t his, having no idea what role this object will play in his life and the fate of the whole world.

Because of the object he’s taken, Garth is forced to flee from his hometown, and his adventures begin. If one can call the chain of scary happenings and mythical occurrences adventures. Running away from his pursuers, it isn’t long before Garth realises that something more dangerous is happening around him. The land that Dulcea Lightbringer and vampire Krath had liberated from the great evil willing to subdue it is on the verge of collapsing under the thumb of another formidable foe. Garth has never seen himself as a hero, but it is probably the trait of a true one – not to be overjoyed at finding out the fate of the world rests on your shoulders.

There are dragons again in this book. But they are really frightening, so very unlike the creatures from the Dulcea’s Rebellion books. The scenes where they bring chaos and destruction to their chosen goal are bone-chilling.

Garth must find the answers to a lot of seemingly unanswerable questions. Why are strange dragons set on destroying? Who orchestrates the sinister occurrences the devastating consequences of which he sees in many places along his journey? He also has to embrace his elven heritage and face who he is.

Garth isn’t without flaws, and it gets him into trouble with the people he meets on his journey and who become his friends and more.

I wonder what’s in store for Garth and also other characters, so I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series “A Dread of Blight and Ruin.”

Good beginning of an action packed series. Many characters, Many action packed battles, many types of evil facing our heroes! Romance is there, and gladly no sex scenes. Ms Maybrooke opens us up to a wonderful magic filled world, one that is at times beautiful and times where it is not so beautiful. Cannot wait for more journeys and battles against evil in the world that has been created.

This book is a solid start to a second trilogy in a world where many of the pieces and key players have already been established. I enjoyed the world building and the author's writing style - her words made me feel like I was in a fantasy realm without being too obscure or unfamiliar. I especially enjoyed the background information we got about the characters from the first trilogy--although I haven't read that trilogy, I liked that the events in those books served as historical information for the characters in this book, and I found the historical figures of Dulcea and Krath fascinating.

As a main character, Garth seemed fairly solid, but some parts of the narrative went a bit too easy on him. In several incredibly tense scenes, he suddenly found an answer or plunged headfirst into a solution without really facing any consequences, even if his actions were the type that should have resulted in problems for him and his friends. Still, I admired his attitude and his willingness to solve problems.

I appreciated that each chapter began with an entry from the journals of Garth or one of his friends, but sometimes the entries were cliche or had nothing to do with the theme of the chapter, and sometimes they felt like they were saying the same thing about friendship or bravery over and over. For the next book, I would like to see more variety in the journal entries - I think it's okay for characters to struggle, and it would be nice to see the characters grappling with that in this series going forward!

A small issue I had was that some of the characters had very similar names, so when the similar-named characters were in scenes together, I had to figure out who was talking by reminding myself which character was which. That distracted from those scenes a bit, but it wasn't too confusing once I finally got everyone straight.

Overall, this was a fun read and it seems like a good continuation of the original trilogy. I cannot overstate how much I admire the author's world building skills, and I think the series will only improve in the next book!

Overall, I ended up enjoying this story.

If I was reviewing the first half of the book, it would have been a 3 star. Why? It was very slow to progress. There really wasn’t much happening. The were conversations, but mostly just journeying from one place to the other with little conflict in the way and when there was, it resolved very quickly. I would have preferred a little more action.

The second half of the book is where stuff really starts happening and this is where I rank this as a 4 star book (so, really a 3.5 overall). I enjoyed the roll out of the mystery, discovering of the mist and its purpose with the dragons. There is still a lot of journeying, but more happens at each step of the journey instead of just continuing on as in the first half. If you like a story with a journey, then this is for you.

The integration of characters from the previous books is done in such a way that reading this book without having read the others is not difficult. The reader does not feel as though they have missed a chunk of the story.

I liked the characters, but the main character, Garth, had many opportunities to come clean about his identity and doesn’t. His relationship with Lyviana is really just starting to turn into something more at the end of this book. I am looking forward to seeing where this goes in the next book.

The climax to this book was rather anticlimactic. The build up was there, but the crescendo fell felt and by that I mean that it ended too quickly. There could have been more to it, maybe a little more drawn out.

In conclusion, I enjoyed the story and will read more because I am curious about where the story is going. The first book lay the ground work and this feels like it could progress into something more.

I got sucked in by the cover, then read it. Let's review!

Plot: as an avid fantasy reader I can spy influences from other works, but ACOMAS is strong enough to withstand this and keep going on its own. Add in a princess, Elves, a faerie, dragons and a vampire, and you might just have yourself something.

Main character(s): I would say Garth is the main one, however we do have other POVs when he isn't around so be prepared. He's quite relatable and easy to get into the head of, so easy enough go follow.

Side characters: well fleshed out with histories and powers, which you don't get to see often. This is awesome!

Magic: easily understandable even for first time fantasy readers.

Worldbuilding: this story's strength. You can tell the author spent a LOT of time on it and I want to see detailed maps please!

Catch: so why 4 stars? Because despite saying you can read this without the previous trilogy, there's information in the text that requires your absolute trust and just roll-with-it, but is probably better understood if you've read about it before. I also want to point out the story lags slightly until the second third or so, which might deter readers. It picks up afterwards however and doesn't stop until its cliffhanger ending!

Overall, an entertaining, engaging read, and I think I'll be following the adventures in Caeryn in future. Definitely recommend.

This story was very difficult for me to read, because I felt there was very little character development, and at every, single, turn, the characters randomly bumped into EXACTLY who or what they needed to complete some leg of their quest.
Garth, the main character, literally gushed on, and on, about how friendship, and togetherness would save the world. It was highly distracting and in the midst of a true crisis I highly doubt this would be a true reaction. Nothing about this character rang true for me unfortunately, and if he thought the phrase “childhood friend” less than 50 times I would be shocked.
None of the other characters truly need mentioning, they were all, to me, very random and fit like a puzzle piece into this world of love and friendship exactly where the main character needed them to be. The women, and some of the men had constant ping pong emotions that also made them less than believable for me.
Instead of constant battles for life and death situations, I would like to have seen the author build actual stories, and not let everything always fall into a neat little row immediately. It was just too silly, choppy and rushed for me, to be an actual “book”.

I really enjoyed Laura Maybrooke's dark fantasy romance trilogy about Dulcea Lightbringer and Lord Krath so I decided to check out the first book in the new sequel series. 'A Curse of Mist and Shadows' takes place two centuries later. Although the vampire lord Krath and his lover the Silver Elven dragon-mistress Lady Dulcea make several cameo appearances in the novel, its protagonist is a young half elf named Garth, whose adventure starts when he comes a across an ancient and mysterious sword following a fight with a group of minotaurs. As the novel progresses he discovers that a new evil has risen in Caeryn, unleashing a deadly curse, a dark mist that destroys everything in its path, wiping out entire civilizations without a trace.

He's joined in his quest by a small group of new characters including his friends Surryn, a human, t two Coral elves Marron & Aisha, one of whom is a water mage, a whimsical faerie named Sparky, a Blaze elf named Spark and Princess Lyviana of Sraeyn.

I'm really looking forward to Book 2 which will hopefully see Garth finally becoming a dragon lord so that he can save the Caeryn from the curse.

After quickly reading the previous trilogy, as I hate to be dropped into a series, I finally finished this awesome book. Dulcea’s rebellion trilogy is awesome as well. I’m totally addicted. I have to say that Garth, Surryn and friends take over from Dulcea’s friends from 200 years ago. A new horrific magical evil has awoken and is spreading across the continent. Lord Krath and Dulcea are looking into it, but it is Garth and friends who must figure out where the evil mist is coming from. The first time the mist showed up it was terrifying reading about it. I began chewing on my nails. Meeting the various cast of characters in the book, was fun. I love the Coral Elves- Marron & Aisha. Meeting Princess Lyviana of Sraeyn was great. There is so much horror in the books. But there is so much hope too. My emotions ran that gamut in this book.

I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

Holy Hera.

This book laid one hell of a groundwork for the following stories. This story has everything - Dragons, Deceit, Vampires, Magic, Necromancy.. I mean.. it's most fantasy readers dream.

Our MC, Garth, gets himself in some hot water with a group of minotaurs and everything kind of goes pear-shaped for him from there. Garth, and most of his friends, are drawn into a battle for the world. Dark forces are uniting to bring about the end and our MCs have to stop it. For at least the last 20% of the book I was on the edge of my seat to see how things progressed.

Needless to say, I'm waiting not so patiently for book 2. Thankfully, the precursor stories are available on KU, so that's where you will find me.

I am a fan of Ms. Maybrooke’s dark fantasy series, Dulcea’s Rebellion; it has fascinating characters, compelling plots, and amazing world-building. So, I was excited to see that there is a new, related series. “A Curse of Mist and Shadows” is Book 1 of Shadows Across the Ages, which takes place two hundred years after the events in Dulcea’s Rebellion. Although this book has a new protagonist, Garth, a half-elf, along with many other new characters, Krath and Dulcea play significant roles in the story. There is a compelling and tense plot with twists and turns that kept me at the edge of my seat. Ideally, readers unfamiliar with the author’s work should start with Dulcea’s Rebellion, though it is not necessary to read it first. If you enjoy dark fantasy with a bit of mystery, intrigue, and romance, you will love this book!

This book gave me all the Lord of the Rings feel…like I’m on a journey, a quest of sort to save mankind with these ragtag group. Except there is no ring to destroy and there is no band of Hobbits to guide. I have not read any books under this series so the first few chapters were just me trying to understand the characters, the world that they live in and their collective past histories. Then it was fast paced, action packed and a somewhat conclusion that may seem like a cliffhanger to some (just consider it like the first book in the LOTR trilogy). I can’t wait to read the follow up books and I am now a fan of this author!.

This story follows Garth as he finds himself doing things that he never thought that he would be doing. He tries to understand what is happening with the mist and villages that seem to have its habitants disappear. He meets the vampire king Krath and Dulcea who had fought a war centuries before and asks them what is happening. They have some idea, but no sure answers. The story is full of intrique, emotions and action. It has Garth and Princes Lyviana working together to try to find answers for her people that survived an attack by the dragons. I enjoyed reading this story and look forward to reading the next book.

Exciting Story . . .

Definitely action-packed, the story will place the reader in the midst of heated battle and magic. The world-building is done well and helps to pull the reader into the story more easily. The story line itself does move a bit slowly in the beginning. But the action picks up and continues at a good pace toward the end. Garth, a half-elf, will have a great deal to do with the fate of the countries of Caeryn, as he interacts with others, but he will ultimately have to trust in himself and his potential to effectively protect Caeryn and keep the evil back.

This is an amazing PNR with some absolutely FANTASTIC world building and DEEP WELL CRAFTED characters. I was surprised time and again and worried for our heroine on multiple occasions. The imagery used held me spellbound for most of the book, especially the last few chapters. There's so many layers and twists and turns it's just deliciously captivating. An amazing dark PNR that you must read. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!.

Coming to this after Dulcea's Rebellion series, I was happy to step back into a world that is familiar and yet new. This works as a great continuation of the story but also functions as its own story. The characters are well-crafted and the journey is exciting. The writing is engaging, and I love the chapter starts; they add interesting insights into the characters and make this world feel fuller.
A lot of action, a lot of battles, and many great characters. I await more!

A happy ARC reader here. This was an exciting adventure, with a bit of mystery and romance. I enjoyed Garth as a protagonist and it was great to follow his journey. Almost constant action and danger, some battles, some great characters. I especially loved Marron! Also, the dragons! I also enjoyed the journal entries from the characters featuring as the chapter headers; I've always enjoyed that style in books. This was an exciting new book in a new series.

I haven’t read the Dulcea’s Rebellion series but I enjoyed this book! I enjoy almost every fantasy book I read but I enjoyed this one the most because I like the opportunity to discover a fantasy that isn’t being talked about EVERYWHERE. This book as a lot of good action packed scenes and kept me interested from start to finish! I also really happened to enjoy the way the MC made his way about his journey. I really enjoyed this book and will probably read it again when I have time.

Really enjoyed the story around Garth and his friends. It has some very interesting world building. I especially liked the return of Krath snd Dulcea, since it gave more depth to the story.

The story tells of a lot of loss, but there is also a good amount of hope, friendship and romance.

Looking forward to the sequel to find out more about Garth and possibly his connection to the Silverwoods.
