A Second Chance/Forced Proximity Gay Romance

Kaz has a choice to make. Should he transition to vampire in the lab, becoming another rat under Uriel's thumb? Or should he take a chance and return to the team? The team who still believes he betrayed them. Who think of him as a traitorous spy. Who'll probably decide to lash him to a stake and burn him beside the begonias with Daniel holding the torch.

As he's never been a coward, Kaz decides to put his vulnerable life in the hands of the team. He'll explain why he was forced to lie and hide the truth. That the threats focused toward the team were serious and the schemes the archangels devised had to be stopped. Some may believe him, but not the most important team member. Daniel will never trust him again.

Danny is spending too much energy composing sad songs and arguing with anyone who pokes their head into the office to see how he’s doing. He’s fine. Really. He’s fine. But when a bleeding, wingless Kaz tumbles through the portal he’s positive the fates are not done messing with him. After doing what he can, he leaves the rest of the team to deal with Kaz and takes off to spend a few days with his friends. Maybe order in a deliciously handsome blood donor. Exactly what he needs to keep his mind off Kaz and his delicious scent and his wicked smile.

Only a call comes in that a pack of rogue vampires have taken over parts of San Francisco, killing innocents and turning the residents' lives into a living nightmare. Kaz is the logical vampire to send to scope out the situation and report back. Only his behavior has been erratic, and the team captain wants Danny to accompany him. Now Danny has to take charge of the mission and make sure the male who broke his heart keeps his hands and mouth and...everything else...as far away from him as possible!

Finally, we can solve the mystery of Kaz or Kazeil, the betrayer who left team V in the lurch or did he?... Kaz was supposed to lead team V in Book 1, but he was just a brooding leader who was not happy with his assignment, never wanted to lead a team, and was kept in the dark about the machinations his archangel Uriel was up to. So, he left the fallen angel Ezra who was thrown from "troll" by his archangel Michael alone to self-heal and bear the crucial three days of the turn of a Vampire by himself. It wasn't a kind thing and only the arrival of the healer Asher brought out some truths about Kaz, such as there is more to the man and his powers than he portrays. But in all this, Danny the one person who felt more than care for Kaz felt betrayed the most. This book explores the relationship of Kaz & Danny and its mending process.

MC1 Kaz is tasting the bitter pill that he let everyone else in team V face, turn after becoming a fallen. Uriel has a plan for him, and if you have read Book 2 you will learn that Kaz has done brutal damage to Uriel's plan. This book picks up after the "rescue mission". Being imprisoned by Uriel, Kaz is not sure what his fate is going to be, till he is sent to team V as a fallen angel. He now has to rely on the mercy and protection of the team that he abandoned. But Ezra isn't an a-hole like Kaz, he's a true leader and his mate Asher also knows that there is more to Kaz than what he shows. They let Kaz heal, on condition that Daniel will have nothing to do with him and he can only stay if the whole team agrees, otherwise, he will be sent back to Uriel and his prison.

MC2 Daniel/Danny felt the betrayal of Kaz the most and it has taken him a while to get over the heartbreak. They were not just lovers, Danny thought he understood Kaz till he came to realize how many secrets his lover was keeping from him. Even when Kaz tried to tell him that Uriel was bating Danny's life for Kaz's cooperation, Danny did not believe him. Danny told him that he has to earn the trust of the team, but that doesn't mean he has forgiven Kaz. The most interesting reveal about a relationship and Kaz's past is revealed in this book.

My fave couple is still Ezra & Asher, somehow they have a balanced relationship and do not step on each other's toes. Ryder and Zac do have a passionate relationship and are mates, but Zac seems such a volatile personality that if Ryder is not in the picture he just loses his cool in every way. Initially, I felt Danny was also throwing a heartbroken person's tantrum. It's almost after 50% of the book that Danny's facade is starting to thaw and in all this, he's still fine having sort of a relationship and becoming a protector of another Puma shifter (ugh!). Honestly, I was not prepared for a poly relationship here and I'm glad the author has steered away from that.

There are many other twists, including the big reveal about trod. The most curious and kinda weird thing about Danny & Kaz is the Dom/sub part play. It's like Danny is fine with Kaz as long as he obeys his command as a sub, and Kaz is ok with that🤔. Then of course the way Kaz's destiny is revealed to take care of the overly powerful archangels. Honestly, this is the only part in the book where the intrigue comes in. Team V mostly remained in the backdrop, most of the action play was handled by Kaz, and Danny as usual played the dumb part of being captured (why the sensible ones always behave this way I'll never fathom). Disappointed with the character development, but the plot thickens a bit more. Let's see how Ruben and Caleb's book play.

The audiobook narration is smooth sailing this time. Both narrators have improved their styles immensely. I liked the cohesive narration style displayed by both, especially in the action and dramatic scenes. It's a good listen, even if the story leaves you a bit parched in character development.
