Ahhhhhh it's so good to read the classic characters; Ted, Big Pig, Fat Cat and apparently a penguin called Fred who has a fetching hairpiece and a bed shop. The rhyming was mostly top notch, and it was obvious when things were supposed to be phonically similar rather than rhyme. Also there were FLAPS! The story was great, Ted is great, Big Pig being in anything is a bonus. The books illustrated by Stephen Cartwright are always spectacular and funny and nuanced. What a joy to read.
I've been pretty pleased with the Usborne Phonics Readers series, with their fun illustrations and pop-outs. These are definitely worth getting for the reader just starting out. Words and stories are basic but enjoyable. This particular story is cute.
Reading Level: K - 2nd grades
Cleanliness: Ted thinks his bed might be magical but he is mistaken.
Ted Bear saw a red bed in a store window and loved it so much he bought it. He crawled into the bed and fell asleep in the store. The bed had to be delivered to his house. Funny ending. Great illustrations with some fold-out pages. This is a phonic reader with helpful information on the inside of the front and back covers.
I used to read these with my young children years ago and while they enjoyed them, I read through gritted teeth. Maybe it was the contrived rhymes or the imagined smugness of Ted in his Red Bed ( wretch), but I can’t bear it. Don’t get me started with Pig on a Dig.
Great book for beginners. I loved the pop outs and illustrations, which allows readers to become engaged in the story. The rhymes are a bonus for this fun read, and the language is simple.
Great with phonics. Has a few vocab words, but for the most part, it reads simply by sounding out. It was creative enough to keep an 8-yr-old (ESL) student engaged.
Our first read from the Usborne Phonics Readers book set. Cute illustrations and no doubt these books will help our bub as he develops his language skills.
This book was absolutely adorable. Throughout the story were lots of different rhyming words to make it fun for your kids. The story was cute as well.
Ted buys his new red bed and falls asleep in the store. He dreams about going on an adventure.
Another positive note on this book were the fold out flaps on two of the pages. The first showed Ted walking up to the store's door and when you fold it back you see him walking inside.
Cute read, good for children learning to read because they can read the easier words and if they have a spot of trouble, the rhyming generally helps speed things along.
Great book, easy words for children learning to read. Like the fact that while it uses phonics there are also "patterns" for the words eg Goose and Loose so is suited to pattern recognition methods of learning to read as well.
Have bought the whole series as daughter loves these. While the words are simple there's still enough of a story/action to keep her interested (just) while too many early reading books are three word sentences, one sentence per page and only a few pages per book.
This set of books is top of the learn to read books we've come across so far.
Usborne Phonics products are specially designed to help children learn how to read. They incorporate fun and learning. Children learn so much when they are young and their brain is forming so quickly. By incorporating reading into the things that they learn early on, they are more likely to succeed. We really enjoy reading this book. We love the simple beginning reading words and the flaps. Plus, it helps that the story and illustrations are very short and creative. I think it is a little weird and silly that they deliver the bed with him in it, but I guess that is what kids books are all about; silly and weird things. :-)
This book is one of Ryan's favorites. The story is cute and there's a little duck on each page that you have to find. It has flaps you can open on each page that keep the story moving. Great illustrations too!
28 months - O enjoys this story and it's great for working on pre-reading skills. Short words that have the same endings and rhyming words. This will be great as we practice reading.
