Fern Michaels isn’t a person. I’m not sure she’s an entity either since an entity is something with separate existence. Fern Michaels® is what I DO. Me, Mary Ruth Kuczkir. Growing up in Hastings, Pennsylvania, I was called Ruth. I became Mary when I entered the business world where first names were the order of the day. To this day, family and friends call me Dink, a name my father gave me when I was born because according to him I was ‘a dinky little thing’ weighing in at four and a half pounds. However, I answer to Fern since people are more comfortable with a name they can pronounce.
As they say, the past is prologue. I grew up, got a job, got married, had five kids. When my youngest went off to Kindergarten, my husband told me to get off my ass and get a job. Those were his exact words. I didn’t know how to do anything except be a wife and mother. I was also a voracious reader having cut my teeth on The Bobbsey Twins, Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Cherry Ames and the like. The library was a magical place for me. It still is to this day. Rather than face the outside world with no skills, I decided to write a book. For some reason that didn’t intimidate me. As my husband said at the time, stupid is as stupid does. Guess what, I don’t have that husband any more. Guess what else! I wrote 99 books, most of them New York Times Best Sellers.
Moving right along here . . . Several years ago I left Ballantine Books, parted company with my agent, sold my house in New Jersey that I had lived in all my married life and in 1993 moved to South Carolina. I figured if I was going to go through trauma let it be all at one time. It was a breeze. The kids were all on their own at that point. The dump was a 300 year old plantation house that is listed in the National Registry that I remodeled. Today it is beyond belief as are the gardens and the equally old Angel Oaks that drip Spanish moss. Unfortunately, I could not get my ghost to relocate. This ghost has been documented by previous owners. Mary Margaret as we call her, is “a friendly”. She is also mischievous. It took me two weeks to figure out that she didn’t like my coffee cups. They would slide off the table or counter or else they’d break in the dishwasher. I bought red checkered ones. All are intact as of this writing. She moves pillows from one room to the other and she stops all the clocks in the house at 9:10 in the a.m. at least once a week. When the Azaleas are in bloom, and only then, I find blooms on my night stand. I have this glorious front porch and during the warm months I see my swing moving early in the morning when the air is still and again late in the day. She doesn’t spook the dogs. I always know when she’s around because the five of them line up and look like they’re at a tennis match. As of this writing we’re co-habiting nicely.
Most writers love what they do and I’m no exception. I love it when I get a germ of an idea and get it down on paper. I love breathing life into my characters. I love writing about women who persevere and prevail because that’s what I had to do to get to this point in time. It’s another way of saying it doesn’t matter where you’ve been, what matters is where you’re going and how you get there. The day I finally prevailed was the day I was inducted into the New Jersey Literary Hall of Fame. For me it was an awesome day and there are no words to describe it. I’ve been telling stories and scribbling for 37 years. I hope I can continue for another 37 years. It wasn’t easy during some of those years. As I said, I had to persevere. My old Polish grandmother said something to me when I was little that I never forgot. She said when God is good to you, you have to give back. For a while I didn’t know how to do that. When I finally figured it out I set up The Fern Michaels® Foundation.
Disappointed. I put this book in the queue from the library because of Fern Michaels and thought the cover with the puppy and kitten was cute and part of the stories. The first story by Fern did have puppies, but I found the female character a little strange. The other two stories were fair, but neither had animals, which is why I found the cover misleading and was disappointed.
Each story in this book will tug at your heart. Fern Michaels Tiny Blessings has a women wanting to start over in a new career and she moves to a small Florida town and when she sees her handsome neighbor, she thinks he might be the key to a new life, especially when she finds out he has new puppies...and how her life will never be the same.
Carolyn Brown's Dogwood Season brings us what she does best, a matriarch that is feisty, strong and witty and loves her family. In this story her two twin granddaughters, who she raised are getting married and they are having a double wedding at the Inn where they were raised into the women they have become...only thing is they have different styles of what they want for a wedding. This is wonderful story that will have you turning the pages to see what happens between these three strong Texas women and what it means to be sisters and family.
In Stacy Finz's Cowboy True, Jace Dalton thinks he has the world by the tail, two sons, a wonderful wife and another child on the way, until the world comes crashing down in the form of his ex-wife who wants contact with her sons after giving him full custody and her hightailing it out of town with hardly any contact with her kids, who one is in collage now and the other in high school, in over six yrs. And Jace is just now having her interfere with his boys after all this time....but she is their mother and other forces will lead Jace in another path. All of these stories have a mother's love involved whether they are a birth mother, adopted mother, or a mother of four legged babies. They will all melt your heart for the love of children.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book!! I've read Fern Michaels and Carolyn Brown before, Stacy Finz is a new author to me but I look forward to reading more of her stories. One thing I love about Fern Michaels is that she always has dogs in her stories. This one did not disappoint, I would love to make the acquaintance of those adorable puppies!! Very sweet story. Carolyn Brown's books always have a spirited older woman with younger family members: daughter, granddaughter, or niece, and this works beautifully. In this one she's planning a wedding for her twin granddaughters, who even though they're twins are as different as night and day who each have some drama right before their wedding. In Stacy's book I kept getting the feeling there was some backstory we were missing and when I read her list of published books, I realized I was right. Dry Creek Ranch is a series. I look forward to finding and reading the full series. A good mix of stories and authors. A perfect way to end my Goodreads for the year.
The three novellas in this collection are equally well written and interesting. In “Tiny Blessings,” four puppies are the catalyst that unite two neighbors in a romantic beginning. In “Dogwood Season,” twins are planning their combined weddings, but their wishes couldn’t be more different. But then, these twins were different all their lives. A wise grandmother is the one who will fulfill their wants and more. In “Cowboy True,” a second wife is the one who will pour oil on the troubled waters when the ex-wife shows up. While dad is trying to protect his two sons from a neglectful mom, someone else will have to step in to defuse the situation. All three of these novellas are entertaining. They deal with the problems that romance and marriage can bring, but all have happy endings.
This book was delightful. I love all Fern Michael books and it was my first experience with Carolyn Brown and Stacy Finz and I enjoyed them also. Each book was different but just as interesting as the first one. I'm so happy that I purchased this item when I saw it. If you like light reading with a touch of romance, this is the book for you. A Fern Michael's book never disappoints me and now I have found some new authors to look forward to also. This book was well worth my time. I think you will appreciate it as much as I did.
Enjoyed getting to know Emma and Nash, but loved hearing about the puppies. Good quick read.
Thoroughly enjoyed the sisterly "love" being shown between Clara and her twin sister Sophia in Dogwood Season. Enjoyed seeing how they came together and were willing to sacrifice in the end.
Cowboy True was also a very good and easy read. Great way to unwind during this busy season after a long day at work. Escaping to the ranch and all that the Dalton family has to offer.
Tiny Blessings is a heart-warming collection of love stories. Above all, they remind us of the blessings we have, which are often overlooked or taken for granted. My particular favorite was Cowboy True by Stacy Finz. I loved this return to Dry Creek Ranch and the story of family, making amends, forgiveness, acceptance, and love.
Was about 3 different authors & each told their own story. First one tells all about Emma Swan & Nash Kendrick . And how 4 puppy dachshund brought them together for a happy life. Second was good twins & Mamma Lizzys who raised them & how they kept the family business together. And the 3 well l’ll let you read it.
I loved those little stories, they had everything i like: family feels, an engagement romance with wedding business, and staying in love with your second chance romance after years together.
