The world has descended into chaos but it isn't the undead that are the worst part. Panic, broken supply lines, disrupted communications, terrorized refugees, the friction and fog of war all combine to make hell on Earth.
The battered men and women of America's storied First Infantry Division, based out of Fort Riley Kansas, are ordered to give up their fights in the cities and retreat towards to the National Redoubt in the Northwest. With ammunition, food and fuel running low and a soul searing death only a bite away, they start a fighting retreat across the plains. In the way are armed gangs, undead hordes, incompetent leadership and a landscape irrevocably changed.
This is the follow up to Shane Gries' breakthrough best selling "The Thin Dead Line" and is set in the world of J.F. Holmes' "Irregular Scout Team One".
More fast-paced zombie action with characters that are easy to like. My cat, Link, would like to thank the author for keeping me in place for a whole evening as a binge read the first 2 books in this series.
I am really enjoying this series. The zombie apocalypse through the eyes of an escaped felon soldier. Mark is such an interesting and well written character. In Leavenworth serving time over lies, he escapes at the beginning taking the uniform of his MP guarding him after he was killed by a zombie. Mark gets linked up with the military at a checkpoint and becomes the leader he was meant to be. This author writes an excellent story with so many Zombie battles. I enjoyed the author's realistic version of the military and it's obvious he lived this life. I cringed when I read "crunchies" I can hardly wait for the next book.
Another really good book by Shane Gries. Plenty of action, lots of plot twists and turns, relatable characters, well written and he definitely knows military culture top to bottom. His undead are fast and frightening. If you enjoy military thrillers, this is a great follow on to the first book in this series.
The whole book is about the mc planning to run away from the army unit that does nothing be screw up and get more ppl killed so he plans to run away cuz as soon as they get where they are going if alive will find out the mc in an imposter and throw him in lock up.in the middle of a zombie outbreak. But when the time comes to run he decides to stay to further the crappy plot of incompetent comanders and now the plot is gone cuz he whole plot was run away from the army to home farm and survive. I wount be continuing this series as it has no point
four stars instead of five because of the MC’s indecisiveness. he lost two men when he could’ve only lost one.
I like this series because it’s in the universe of IST one regular scout one. Unfortunately, the MC is not as charismatic as the main character in the other book. The character seems to be a little bit indecisive, which causes him not only to lose one man but to lose two. You’re a leader, you have to be decisive. I like the storyline and want to see where it’s going, but I hope the MC grows as the story progresses. I will definitely read the next book. But I gave it four stars because as a military man, you have to save as many as you can, no spoilers. You will see when you read this book. I will definitely read the next book when it comes out, but I took a star away from it because of the characters indecisiveness.
This book is definitely a page turner. I was unable to put it down or to stop reading. You feel as if you are there when the z’s come in on them, when the armor runs out of fuel and the become a turtle covered in ants trying to get at the sweet meat inside of the shell. Many a good soldier will lose their lives on the run out of Kansas. I cannot wait for the next book.
A lot of these books are poorly written and edited. This book isn't the best, but far from the worst. The author has a good grasp of military life that adds realism to far fetched story (aren't all zombie books?). You could do worse... I like this author and look forward to volume 3.
Keeps you involved with the characters and storyline as only a person with military experience could tell it, albeit fictional, the way it was written, makes ya kinda feel you were there. The nomenclature, etc. of the equipment used in the story, made me feel like I was back in the army, and that was a long time ago. Only have one word, "OUTSTANDING" Shane!
I've read, watched, and listened to quite a few zombie genre books and / or shows. This series has me hooked. The characters can be smart and sometimes dumb but at least they'll tell you why. The character development is pretty well done, the gruesome carnage of a zombie apocalypse is spot on, and the action is non-stop. Good series so far.
One of my favorites, You feel like you are along on the missions and operations. Realistic, don't want to put it down. The troops are gradually learning tricks on how to deal with the ''Zs". Waiting for book 3 to come out. A must read for a person who likes Zs and Military books. Ret. Navy CWO4..Glover
I truly belief that the teams German shepherd is the unsung hero of this series. Do on a serious note the books death count continues to rises do like the first book the author skimmed on world details like how the virus spread across the world so quickly.
I am getting to like certain characters in this book.
There is a few bad actors in charge of these troops and they shouldn’t be there. One good man, or bad man is the guy to change this all around. He nearly left them but had second thoughts, thank god. Well book three should sort it out for us the readers, I hope. Very enjoyable story apart from the knob heads in charge. Enjoy.
While the world is falling apart, an imposter takes charge to help his fellow man. How long can the ruse hold up? More importantly, can he save his new friends and the rest of the traveling group?
Dammit, Shane! I couldn’t catch my breath. The action you describe kept me focused until 0200 when I finally got to the end, and wondering just how far you’ve gotten on the next book. Great novel. Now get back to work on the next one!
Accurate depiction of military action. Well written and the characters are believable and leave you rooting for them to survive. I hope there is a third book in the works soon.
I am definitely hooked on this series. It is riveting from the start to the very last page. The fighting between the military and the fast and slow zombies will have you on the edge of your seat. I can't wait for the next book.
It was a good read but not a great read. It moved well and showed promise. I’m preparing to read the next book soon. I’m not a big fan of the whole Zombie Apocalypse line of novels. But this one held my attention.
If you enjoy long winded military briefings you may like this. There was zero character development but just enough action to keep the story moving. I've read through this far so I'll give the next one a shot but my hopes won't be too high.
The story line and character development are OSCAR worthy. I have been completely captivated by each character regardless of minor or major role. Have already recommended this series to others who love a good zombie storie.
Brilliant zombie series this should be made into a proper mini series well thought out great characters and the military mechanics are absolutely bang on
I was worried there for a second about Mark, but this was amazing. Still love my boys Johnson and Dubois. I will miss Lt Baker annd Sgt. Yokey. The next book hopefully will come out soon.
