Hard one to review this: I am invested but I did struggle somewhat with these characters extreme personalities.
Both their mood-swings were intense almost at times giving me bloody whiplash especially Clover she blew hot and cold constantly throughout.
This also got slightly confusing at times but the further we went here the more clarity seemed to be offered up: Almost like a veil being slowly lifted from my eyes.
What this did have going for it in spades is its pure uniqueness this one definitely stood out from the crowd in terms of content.
So this is the first in the series had a riveting central storyline and was told from dual POV alternating chapters.
The sex was super hot very much a power struggle with both Hunter and Clover fighting for dominance, it really was fierce.
This was also extremely limited in secondary characters it was all about the dynamic between Clover and Hunter and their onward journey.
So character-wise Hunter originally came across as arrogant and detached with an inflated sense of self-importance: He lives for his work all else gets pushed aside.
What he is doing to Clover is entirely criminal but he does believe the ends justify the means and he feels that he is ultimately saving her life.
It also becomes apparent that Hunter's past is far from pretty or conventional either.
Clover is rebellious, sticking the middle finger up to all authority her behaviour was fascinating as she didn't react to anything how you would expect her to, shes all hard edges and bad attitude and at times is her own worst enemy.
Her constant conflict could sometimes get a tad annoying it was like all the time.
So when Hunter actually stalks his prey through the forest this had an eerie ominous undertone to it that gave me chills.
I could almost imagine a presence of darkness along with Clover encroaching slowly from the surrounding vegetation.
Watching and waiting for a weakness, ready to spring at the slightest opening in her defences; I had actual shivers.
Also, the contrasts here light and dark, gentle and fierce this book was all about the contrast.
There was also something else here that made an appearance The father and that creepy ass church, now what is all that about?
Seriously confounded and intrigued me pulling me in but then equally repelling me.
Do I actually want to know?
This story left me with so many questions, ones that I will hopefully discover in book 2 and with the arrival of Kane and a mute Ziggy hopefully all will be revealed.

3.5 “She was never my patient, was she? She was always my prey.”

Ok. So this book is basically like an acid trip gone bad, and then good, and then bad, and then good again. I’ve never actually dropped acid, so I don’t know if that’s really a good description but after reading this book I feel like I’ve done drugs. It is a wild ride. For the first part of the book the story is pretty standard. Doctor lures rehab patient back to rehab so that he can perform an experiment on her... not very standard, but at first it just seems like your average dark romance. Then the trip starts, and you’re not sure what’s real and what isn’t. Hunter is trying to help Clover. Well at least he thinks, but by the end they sort of help each other.

My only real complaints about this book is that it follows dual POV’s and sometimes they are repetitive. I also noticed that at one point the story sort of shifts, like the author abruptly decides to go in a new direction and some continuity issues start to happen. Which is a simple editing issue in my eyes. Things that could have easily been forgotten while writing, but should have been fixed with another read through. ALL IN ALL though I enjoyed the plot and the point of this story. Addiction. Obsession. A little dark. A little wild.

I’d say this ends with a HFN, but there’s more to the story. I gather from the blurb the next book will be about new characters, but I hope we get more on Clover & Hunter. I feel like their story could be way deeper.

This was the first time i read an ARC by this author, and it had me hooked from page one!

Clover just finished rehab and, with other ex-patients,gets to celebrate that with a dinner at the institute. She finds out she’s homeless just before entering the building and needs to find a new place to stay.
Dr. Hill,Hunter, has plans for her. He’s been following this willfull mess of a girl from the moment she started rehab and sees her as the perfect subject for his experiment.
Only Clover doesn’t follow his rules and makes him feel things he shouldn’t.
Brings not only her dark past to the surface, but his as well.....
And what that means? Do i want to find out? Hell yes!

Not what I expected

Wow.... Well I guess I'll start off by saying that I didn't like this book. There were some twists and turns that I liked but it just wasn't what I was expecting. I'm all for psychological thrillers and trippy books but this didn't feel like either to me. It was kinda boring and just more uncomfortably weird than anything else.

Funny enough, I liked Clover. Once you get passed her rather colorful inner dialog I found her to be somewhat relatable. Hunter on the other hand, I hated from the get go. I just wasn't into anything he was trying to accomplish. Yes I know, it's a thriller and there is always something unsettling about the story that claws it's way into being and forces you to accept that it exists. But I just wasn't buying what Hunter was trying to give me.

Another thing that just wasn't working for me was the really odd wishy washy back and forth union that Clover and Hunter seemed insistent on. It was such a bizarre relationship with too much of it being forced.

All in all it totally didn't work for me. It had potential to be great! It just got hung up on some unnecessary points.

This book kind of dragged. It took ages to get to the main plot, and it was so annoying.

I liked the mystery theme but it got frustrating, after a while. It was like the author couldn’t decide whether they wanted them at each other’s throats or fucking each other.

The character development was good, and the connection between Clover and Hunter was amazing. I just kind of expected a bit more. It was all just a big MEH ~ Do I like it or do I not like it?’ If I’m being honest, I really don’t know what to say about it.

Stars ~ 3.7 (I couldn’t decide)

Couldn't put this down! Gripping, thrilling.. so deliciously dark and twisted.

I absolutely love Clover, with her snark and strong will. So broken, but determined to fight.

Hunter draws her into his dangerous game and I want to hate him, I 'should'... but hell, who am I kidding - I always do love a dark, sinister, controlling anti-hero!

There's still secrets to unfold, greater dangers to face, and I can't wait to find them out in book 2!

What a fantastic story!!!

Hunter Hill is very smart and a little psychotic. When he sees Clover at his rehabilitation center he knows she is the perfect subject for his study. Hunter will lead Clover on a twisted journey in order to truly cure her of her addiction. He believes that his way is the only true cure. This wonderfully written slightly dark story is absolutely captivating and I was holding my breath the entire time I was reading it. I loved Hunter and Clover's story and I definitely recommend it as a must read.

I received a complimentary copy from the author through Voracious Readers Only.

This was an amazing book from start to finish. This was amazingly well written, it was the perfect blend of dark and trilling, with well developed and brilliantly written characters. I feel like it's a unique, but that may be because it's outside of my "normal" go to type of book. (Really though, I'll read anything, but I do tend to like my books - lighter.) I'm still not sure how I feel about the main man here, I both love and hate him. He's evil but lovely.

I would recommend this as a must read, and I can't wait to read more by Logan Fox!

I quite enjoyed this book! You never quite get a handle on what’s going to happen next. Kept me intrigued until the end of the book. It was fast paced and well written, with evolving characters. I will just have read the next book to find out what happens, damn cliffhangers!

This book was interesting experience. It is clever, VERY well written and quite psycho. Can't really reactibe it as fun or relaxing experience, it was almost too intensive and just too dark... And yet I read it in two hours because I just could stop!

The weird thing is there is absolutely nothing I can relate on but it was still very captivating. It was scary as hell psycho, almost magical in it's weird way. I don't see anything romantic or cute in this story, to let it's just scary. Scary because it's quite realistic narration of a person who has emotionally unstable personality disorder. I am amazed of the fact it is so, so well written. Never before have I had this much negative and positive anxiety at the same time while reading a book. The negative because the story itself is horrifying and abusint, and positive because I admire the author who can write like this.

Well done Logan Fox!!

A HFN ending, as the story continues …

This is a well written psychological thriller that’s darkly twisted at times. It’s also a very compelling story. I enjoyed the push and pull between Dr. Hunter Hill and Clover. Both are dominant, in-control individuals each trying to gain the upper hand in their battle of wits and wills. Was Clover merely a random selection by Dr. Hill, or is there something deeper and darker at play? The story was told from a dual POV and with many of the scenes repeated I found the story a bit overly long. There’s plenty of drama, and suspense, plus many secrets along with several seriously steamy encounters. While this installment has its conclusion, Clover’s curiosity is not appeased and she demands answers. She should be careful what she asks for. I look forward to the continuation of the story.

With each new story you give us...we get so captivated by what you described, how the people interact and they way things come full circle.  In this story I'm seeing some clues from different books. And that makes me LOVE this boo, so very much. Clover is this mess of a woman ,who has been dealt with some heavy sh*t in her life. But what really sets her apart is that she knows what went wrong and accepts it and moves on. Hunter in the other hand is very difficult to read but by the end of the story....which was a cliffhanger...UGH!, we start to understand him. Now I hope to get book 2 soon cuz this one rocked!  Thank you again for another great story. I give it 5 stars. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book as an Advanced Reader's Copy.

Who thought a book about a heroin addict would be so gripping! This story pulled me into it right from the start and the minute Clover is left in the woods by Hunter I had to continue reading. I felt everything Clover felt and wanted to know what was going on. It was fascinating and credible and although I don’t have all the answers it was a great story.

I'll start by saying I'm a big Logan Fox fan and have been for a long time, beginning with the first book I ever read in the Fox Pit Billionaires series (may be a new name now, but that was the original). That series was insane, intense and definitely a dark erotic psychological thriller that took me outside of my comfort zone. As has become the norm since the first book I read, I can always count on my emotions being held captive and me questioning just how 'messed up' I really am if I enjoy these books so much lol.

I was looking forward to this book since I knew it at least mentioned an interesting character from her previous series (Kane from the Dark Twisted Love/Their Lady of Shadows series, although he's only mentioned in this book and doesn't appear quite yet). Although this wasn't the best book I've ready by the author, it was a solid start to the series and dare I say, a bit more subdued/less twisted than the norm for the author. But have no fear, Ms. Fox has assured us the darkness will return. And since I read this one in one day, I guess that should tell you something about how she still managed to keep me hooked.

I will say that I was not the biggest fan of Clover. She was crass, unapologetic, foul-mouthed and quite frankly, not someone I'd even bother friending based on her attitude alone (even if she wasn't a heroine addict). However, we learn her story, see her walls tumble and get inside the head of her as we journey through the book. At that point, she begins to grow on you a bit, it just takes quite a bit of getting use to her personality.

Then there's Hunter. He was certainly a mystery. He was a rich, intelligent, well-respected and a handsome billionaire, who just so happens to be a botanist and runs facility that helps patients fight addiction. But little did we know in the beginning of this book that he'd end up using Clover as an experiment to further his research and make us question his sanity (I should have guessed based on another of this author's series - people are not always what they seem).

The ending honestly threw me. Again, based on previous books, I know this wasn't the typical ending for a book in a series. It actually had a HFN (although, now that I think about it, another book in the middle of the last series also had a HFN). I didn't mind it, but I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop, which I know it absolutely will, especially with the phone call Hunter made at the end to a certain me we love to hate, Kane.

Looking forward to Book 2!

*I received a free copy of this book via Voracious Readers Only and with thanks to the author. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*

There is an author note to this book, as follows: This work of fiction is intended for mature audiences only. All sexually active characters portrayed in this e-book are eighteen years of age or older. Please do not buy/read this e-book if strong sexual situations, multiple partners, violence, drugs, domestic discipline, and explicit language offend you.

To the above I would also add a trigger warning for non-consensual sexual activity.

So you have been warned – this is strong stuff!

Clover is a heroin addict. Or was. Even she doesn’t seem clear which it is. Luckily (for who?) Hunter is obsessed with finding a guaranteed 100% cure for addiction. Well…definitely obsessed anyway… with something, or someone. Clover really needs to start running!

We get the story from both main character points of view. Clover’s sections are full of both strong and sexual language, and blaze with an honest – almost innocent – outrage at the cruelty of the world, her life, the things she ‘has’ to do. She is blunt, direct, manipulative, damaged, desperate and down but not out.

Hunter, on the other hand, narrates his side like a scientist recording a psychological experiment, initially. It doesn’t take long for the cracks to show and the reader to realise that he too is broken. He covers well, but there is darkness and desperation running deep in him and only barely contained. Clover is the match to his fuse, and there is a danger that the resulting emotional conflagration will burn the two of them to dust. Add in some sexual chemistry and inhibition-lowering drugs and… pretty hot stuff.

I have already warned about this right at the start, but it bears repeating that this is a dark and visceral story, and the sex reflects this with violence, control and reluctance all playing parts. There were hints of softer emotions, but this is the first book in a series and so the gentle emotions remained fairly well hidden for most of the plot.

I don’t want to reveal any more of the plot than is already in the blurb, as I was fascinated by how my perspective on the characters changed as the story developed. The author may have taken her inspiration from Red Riding Hood and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in terms of atmosphere and settings, but the characters take on a life of their own, and it becomes increasingly unclear just who the Big Bad Wolf is, and who the little lost naïf!

Recommended to those who like psychological suspense and dark erotica, and are not afraid of obscenities (or the dark).

Clover is a recovering heroin addict and Hunter is a doctor at the rehab center where Clover is getting help. This is a dark and twisted tale about a doctor who uses one of his patients as an involuntary subject in his demented experiment and things take some crazy turns. Dark Hunter is book one in the series and after that cliffhanger ending, I can't wait to read the next book to find out what happens next.

Red Riding Hood meets Alice in Wonderland for sure! This book took me on a ride I wasn't sure I was ready for. I've never experienced stuff like this in real life, but the details the explanations; I was drawn in from the start and was kept there until the end.

This book was different for me. Haven't read one like this before but I actually enjoyed it and am curious to dive in more and see what happens next for Clover and Hunter.

I haven't figured out how to rate this book. It's twisted, a little hard to follow, but well written. I just didn't get it. Clover is out of rehab for heroin addiction and goes back to the institute to receive her chip. She meets Hunter who is the founder and owner. He has been studying her and is a little obsessed with her. They have a hot night together and she wakes up in the woods as a part of his "experiment" to cure her of a relapse. Thus begins a twisted chase through the woods facing her demons and getting to the bottom of her addiction. Hunter is breaking his rules because he's been in the same boat. Dual POV & the chapters are short but there was some confusion where it switched back & forth between now and the past. There are things going on that aren't addressed and the book ends in a cliffhanger but I'm not invested enough to read the next one

Finished it in a day and a half! New Record🎃 The cover is pretty!!

This book was a roller-coaster. I'd like to call it a masterpiece in the same way I think Saltburn is a masterpiece. It was mentally stimulating.

A hippy doctor and an ex-junkie

Clover and Hunter are two people who know they'd be volatile together but they understand each other.

Their histories with abuse and heroin addiction makes Hunter think he can cure her. Clover wants to be cured but she's not willing to do it so easily.

Somebody get me some Ayahuasca. I need it after reading this book so I can dive into the next one😉
