The Curators–Joe Ramsey, Grim, Lilli Spicer, Durango, and Lucius–have set up a headquarters in Richmond, London.
Joe's new life becomes complicated when he learns that there’s another grimoire out there, one that the Iron Order will do anything to obtain. Even leveling London.
But Joe likes London.
With his special ability to absorb magic and redirect it as he wills, he might just save it.
I love magic stories set in London. This one has a good mix of both. Joe is learning more about the magical side of London, Mucous may be human after all, and Vasmo, is still Vasmo. In this story kidnapped parents send Vasmo's goddaughter to him for safe keeping, well, that was his idea. Her's is to get them back. Fun ensues!
Good for what it is; an easy and fun read/listen. So.. no, ofcourse it isn't the most epic fantasy story, but I also don't believe it was ever supposed to be. (To be fair; if only the greatest/most epic books ever written, would be allowed a 5 star rating, then how many books would Really deserve it?)
I liked the first book but complained that it felt a bit like a Hollywood version of itself-kind of too much so that it lost its punch slightly. Only slightly, since it was still a very good book but it occasionally felt a bit inauthentic.
This book is everything the first book should have been though. London is so much more realistic, the characters don’t feel like they are overcompensating and so are much funnier as a result and the story flowed nicely. It’s vibrant, detailed and interesting and the plot isn’t all neatly tied up in a bow at the end (which is a good thing!). Really enjoyed this one.
It’s a bit short and truncated to fit the next part of the story into a second book, which I find irritating but is done very well so it’s mostly forgiven. I’m enjoying seeing more of the characters too- you’re given depth by being shown things rather than being lectured about their qualities and they feel that much more authentic as a result.
The book has a nice feel and a good character pace-I’d happily read this kind of book just for that vibe even without the copious amounts of action!
I have found the first two books of this trilogy extremely frustrating. They have great characters and a good plot/ storyline but the writing is extremely disappointing. I like that it is set in London but the author goes too far to incorporate English/Londoner behaviour traits and anecdotes which have the adverse effect of making it seem poorly researched and are a distraction from the story. I hoped it would improve in the second book and was thrilled to discover it was set in my area of London. Unfortunately, the writing seemed worse and the book ended before the sub plot was resolved. This is such a shame as the story premise and the characters are great but I feel the author may have been writing with TV in mind instead of literature. Hopefully, this is just inexperience and DB King will develop into an amazing author they certainly have the imagination for it.
A lot of tongue and cheek wit with little actual story
I like the general idea, and Kindle said I have read book one, so I assumed I would like book 2, but 33% of the way through nothing has happened other than an explanation of how childish and witty Grim is and how clueless the main character is, with childish, antics and wit that even a five-year-old might not have found funny… humor, but sometimes when you spend so much time trying to show how clever you are it falls flat and you end up with little to no actual story
I have so many series going on right now that retrieving which characters belong where I can get in a muddle. It took 2 pages here for it all to come back, the setting, tone, pace of action, characters and unique wit. I'm esp satisfied with the maturing of Joe. He isn't the moon-calf of last book.
Young Joe once again pulls everyone's from the brink of death. Me thinks he's getting the hang of this magical thing. Can't wait for his next adventure into the world of magic!
We need more of this story!! I really enjoyed reading this book and got lost in its pages. I can’t wait to see what happens next! I hope you continue this series
