Practical Magic meets Lucifer in this spicy opposites attract paranormal rom-com brimming with quirky small-town charm, witchy fall vibes, and sizzling romance!
Sarah Piper is a witchy, Tarot-card-slinging paranormal romance and urban fantasy author. Through her signature brew of dark magic, heart-pounding suspense, and steamy romance, Sarah promises a sexy, supernatural escape into a world where the magic is real, the monsters are sinfully hot, and the witches always get their magically-ever-afters.
Readers have dubbed her work “super sexy,” “imaginative and original,” “off-the-walls good,” and “delightfully wicked in the best ways,” a quote Sarah hopes will appear on her tombstone.
Originally from New York, Sarah now makes her home in northern Colorado with her husband (though that changes frequently) (the location, not the husband), where she spends her days sleeping like a vampire and her nights writing books, casting spells, gazing at the moon, playing with her ever-expanding collection of Tarot cards, binge-watching Supernatural (Team Dean!), and obsessing over the best way to brew a cup of tea.
It has been a LONG time since one of these silly-happy goofy lighthearted ridiculous romances have had my face hurting from smiling. But goddammit if this one didn't hit the spot.
Violet is just the right amount of quirky, without being gitchy or over-wrought or unbearable. She's absolutely hilarious too, which is a big bonus.
But the real highlight here is Devlin. His humor, his complete unabashedness, and the fact that he's literally the devil, willing and able to smite anyone who even looks at his girl the wrong way--seriously, sign me up.
I had the audiobook for this one, and let me tell you--the production is done SO well, you don't need the text (although I had it too, to read along). Shane East's voice alone makes this worth the listen, but the whole book is so well done it literally felt like I was listening to a movie.
If you like witchy vibes, romcoms set in quaint small towns, Lucifer (the show), sizzling spice, and tea, this will be right up your alley.
Rounding up a little - but dammit, this book is too cute to have under 200 ratings! Super fun, small-town witchy fluff and red-hot bubblegum banter.
I highly suggest the audiobook - it's duet narrated by Shane East + Samantha Brentmoor. They're always amazing, but their comedic chops were on point here - I actually laughed out loud several times.
𝘧𝘢𝘷𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘴:
● LITERAL forced proximity! ● Domestic scenes of them just hanging out with her cats 🥰. Both of them just liked each other and had great chemistry. ● They re-enact a romance book scene. 🥵 ● He nicknames her ex 'Twenty Watt' (because he's a dim bulb 💡)! 🤣 ● She's caught with her (haunted) emotional support vibrator, 'Mr. Wiggles'. 🫠 ● He wears a literal Freudian slip to a Halloween party.
𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘴:
● The premise doesn't really hold water. Our FMC needs 100k for her tea shop. And Devlin (the Devil) needs to help her - without magic. But in this universe, he's an A-list influencer living in a Hollywood mansion. Even with the spell's limitations, 100k would be super easy for him. ● The Grant Presentation. For me, the comedy gag in this scene didn't land 🤷♀️. ● 3rd Act Since the best part of this book was the cute tone, I felt less engaged when it turned heavy.
It started cozy, ended with me blushing into my headphones 😮💨
🧙♀️ The Setup
When Violet Pepperdine gets an eviction notice for her beloved teashop, she does what any stressed, broke witch would do — downs too many magic mojitos and accidentally summons the actual Devil. Oops.
Now the Prince of Darkness himself is trapped in her shop, Kettle & Cauldron, thanks to a binding spell gone spectacularly sideways. The only way to send him home? He has to help Violet find her “heart’s desire.” Easy, right?
🫖 My Thoughts
Well now — this was such a ride. I genuinely can’t remember the last time I laughed this much while reading.
First things first: listen to this on audio. I swear I wouldn’t have enjoyed it half as much without the insanely talented narrators. Shane East and Samantha Brentmoor absolutely own the duet performance — charming, cheeky, and completely addictive.
The grilled cheese scene?? 🔥 I had to pause and collect myself. And when they reenact a romance novel scene? I lost it.
Sure, the plot’s on the lighter side, but I didn’t mind. It makes up for it with sharp banter, warmth, and surprisingly real moments about abandonment issues and silencing that nasty little inner voice.
🪄The Characters
👿Devlin Pierce Despite being, you know, the literal Devil, Devlin was such a sweetheart. Banished from Hell and forced to reap a million souls to reclaim his throne, he’s jaded and bored… until Violet.
And listen — it’s already unfair when this man calls her “love,” but then he drops “mushroom”? That had no business being that cute. 💀
🍄 Violet Pepperdine I saw so much of myself in her empathy and people-reading skills. She’s got big Virgo energy: tidy, anxious, can’t relax until everyone else is okay. It’s me. I’m her.
That said… the third-act breakup? Way too dramatic for my taste. It dragged the ending out and honestly made me a little frustrated with her. Girl, he’s the one who deserved an apology!!
🎯 Final Take
Devlin totally gives Lucifer (the show) vibes — all dark charm, wicked wit, and a secretly soft heart.
If you’re in the mood for something magical and a little spicy — this is your perfect fall read (or listen).
The sisters, the aunts, Finn — the whole cast is a delight. I really hope Sarah Piper keeps brewing more books in this world because I am so here for it.
🍁Tropes / What to Expect
Paranormal romance Witch × Devil Forced proximity He falls first Small town Cozy fall vibes
2.5. I usually love a good small business (tea so cute!) witchy town with a devil falls first story line! Sounds amazing. It was ok.
Very Lucifer fan fic coded. Devil’s just a sad boi.
I enjoyed it for what it was, a light fun read that was decently funny enough until the last act. The break up was so forced.
MC’s mad for convoluted reasons—but mostly just an excuse to force in some unearned groveling trope at the end. Honestly I thought she should have done some apologizing to him. 🤷🏻♀️
She’s got a stick up her butt that she has to be the one to save her own business. Yet she does so little to help herself this entire book! Like literally, she has a month to solve her problems. So she gets smash faced, ruins his life by summoning him, then proceeds to do absolutely nothing different to fix her problems.
She reluctantly applies to a grant at his encouragement. Then she throws a fit when she fails 😂. Then throws a fit when he helps out because she failed.
How dare he help behind her back!! And after kicking him to the curb…she uses the evidence HE gathered and asks a WHOLE town to help instead. Cause their help is fine?
I had a weird relationship with this book. I liked it, yet at the same time I also found it super cringe at times? I wanted to like Violet so much but she was just really awkward at times. Like we get it sis, tea is your life but like…can we talk about something else maybe? Devin was also the epitome of fuck boy that I didn’t find at all charming. This was just an okay read. I mean I finished it, I guess?
So a witch gets drunk and accidentally summons the devil. 😈 Now they’re bonded together until she fulfills her hearts desire, which is to save her magic tea shop.
Omfg the FMC in this was beyond annoying. Too quirky too live. Like you wanted to shake her a bit and shout "You're a fucking adult woman with business! You are a powerful witch! Get your god damn shit together!" And then maybe also give her a slap for good measure. Like fuck, she was so annoying. The MMC's nickname for her was mushroom. Which is just awful, like so bad, but also shows you how quirky she was! Spoiler, she really wasn't.
And the MMC. He was suppose to be The Devil. Instead, just he's just a sad boi. Which I do love, truly, I do. But if he is going to be the Prince of Darkness, he needs to act like it. He should have just been written as a more regular demon that gets summoned. Why does every character need to be the biggest/strongest/most powerful/king/queen/etc. Idk things can just be toned down down a bit. Or a lot.
The third act break up was her being mad that he helped? Why was she even mad in the first place. She summoned him and he basically has to help. And all he does is fuck with her ex. Like, honest to God why was she mad. It made ZERO sense. It was so forced I almost quit right there! 86% so I said fuck it and kept going. But it did not get better lol. (I wasn't surprised 🙃🫠)
I listened to this as an audiobook, and the production was well done but I do not think I am the target audience. The plot was just sooooo thin. I couldn't buy it and paired with unbelievable characters, this just didn't work for me. If you like Charmed+Gilmore Girls+ Lucifer (then make it like a sickly sweet Hallmarky small town "romcom") you would probably like this. I didn't tho lol 🤷♀️
I thought I had picked a standard cosy type of book. I didn't even bother to read the tags or description, just jumped on the "paranormal mystery or romance" vibe of the cover, and pressed play.
Turned out it was a romance, not a mystery. I wanted mystery, to be honest, but it was still enjoyable. Maybe not quite my thing in terms of story though. It was just a tad thin in terms of plot, but I found the humour enjoyable so I stuck with it.
Not once did I understand why the heck Devlin (a.k.a. the actual Devil) fell in love with Violet Pepperdyne (awesome last name!), but as far as Lucifer inspired fics goes ... Uhm ... Have I mentioned fanfics really aren't my thing...?
I couldn't escape the thought of a Tom Ellis replica Devil falling instantly in lust/love with a witch so lacking in personality - aside from snort-laughs, glasses, and a tea obsession - that she felt like a perfect [Insert Yourself Here, Please!] type of character.
Without the two narrators I think I would have jumped ship, actually. Both are really good though and made the absolute most out of the humorous scenes in a way that made me snort-laugh a bit myself. For most of the book, I simply enjoyed listening to these two bickering and having a cosy (and then smexy) time.
However, the story lost me towards the end when the obligatory (but always temporary) break-up drama started to play out. Calling the bloody Devil out for doing morally questionable things...? Are you kidding me??? He's THE DEVIL! What part of that was in any way unclear....?
Then my poor ears had to deal with the most unbearably long and sleazy declaration of love I've probably ever encountered. I'm still trying to recover from all the "ick" I felt. Yeah, yeah, and before you say anything: I don't actually mind if I die alone and get eaten by cats, thank you very much! This amount of oral, dripping, melted cheese makes me break out in hives. I'd much rather be single than deal with that level of slime. *shudder*
To each their own kinks though. Just saying it really isn't mine!
The book as a whole was fun, but the romance was too "insta" and a bit too contrived for my taste. Also the plot was on the weak side. I just can't circumvent the thought that this once was a Lucifer self-insert fanfic. (Sorreh.)
*In-progress spelling error (which I'm totally going to blame on autocorrect and/or dyslexia - pick your favourite!): Thought! She "thought" the actual Devil would be "different"... Ffs, I hate that you can't edit those comments.
Audio book and plot review: 5 ⭐️ Overall 5⭐️ Narrators 5⭐️ Plot 🌶🌶 LISTEN TO IT- DONT READ IT! 400 pages or 9 hours 36 minutes Narrators are the damn hot and sexy Shane East and the perfectly cast Samantha Brentmoor
I know I'm a strict reviewer and this is maybe the 3rd 5star I've ever given an audio book but that's because I'm fussy with my narrators! if they don't sound like the characters then I can't get into the story, or I'll struggle to stay focused and it just does my head in rewinding... (for example daughter of no worlds by carrisa broadbent is an awful audio book- read that one , don't listen to it!)
what a book! I saw a clip of these narrators recording a scene from the book which I loved and that alone made me buy the audio book! just that one single clip and I had to get the book, I had no clue what it was about or how long it was or anything else, I just knew I needed more of this story told by these voice actors!
So, her voice is ever so light and funny and his is just melt in your mouth (not in your hand) SEXXXXXXY! the plot is a wonderful mix of cosy, fun, banter, smut and magic! with s3x parties, deals with the devil, multiple supernatural creatures, witches casting spells, brilliant snarky side characters with the best sarcasm and banter, all set in a cosy yet relatable small town in America. I 'read' this in April and it was brilliant, I kind of wished I'd waited until Sept/Oct as it would have been very fitting for a fall book.
Narrators were just perfection- her voices were brilliant, the evil- talk smack about the devil best friend had a dark slanted accent that truly suited the character, the main character has an innocent, cute little voice with the perfect drunken lilts and embarrassment tones when needed. and his voice... well... the devil has one sultry, come hither, addictive tone! and the breathiness of the smut scenes were HOT! jeez! I'm about to find every book ever narrated by him and buy them! her too as a matter of fact! I hope there are more of them together too as I really enjoyed the mix of two quality narrators telling a great story!
for more recs find me on most platforms under your_bookish_fantasy, oh and, LISTEN TO THIS BOOK! ypu will not regret it!
This was a very cute and fluffy book. Honestly, I only gave it 4-stars because it made me smile so much. The stakes were very low throughout the whole story. There was some slow burn and pining, but the level of angst was minimal. Basically an enjoyable and stress free read for those moments when you need something light. I really liked the main couple, the heroine was cute and very relatable on her anxiety, and the hero was funny as hell (pun totally intended). The best thing for me was how easily they fell in love, there wasn’t any pain or hurt, it was a good time for both of them despite their issues. They both had hangups from life in itself, but they were basically gone for each other from the beginning. I only wish we had explored more of their backstories, both seemed really interesting and I wanted to know more. My first book by Sarah Piper was a good one. Her writing is easy and enjoyable, which made for a great and smooth read. I liked the story as a whole, it was fun and lighthearted. Honestly, I just kind of wanted to have a little deeper dive into the magical and mystic background, there was so much more to be explored. Overall, it was a great experience for me and I really needed an easygoing read.
This was so fun and cute. I enjoyed this story from beginning to end, with a few laugh out loud moments. I do wonder what happened to Mr Wiggles, though...
Čo by robil diabol v normálnom svete?
This book held promise- I did it as an audiobook and it was done in duet format which is usually awesome. Plus, I love witches and the premise is a tea witch accidentally summons the devil and together they try to save her failing tea shop. My toxic trait is that I can’t DNF. It was cringey, cheesey, and I felt the book didn’t really know what it wanted to be fantasy, cozy fantasy, or smut. This is apparently the first book in a series and needless to say I won’t be continuing it.
1.5 stars. i tried to give this book a chance really. i even finished it. despite thinking she was annoying and her quirkiness wasn’t cute to me just cringy, the grant being a cop out and not a realistic solution at all, and not feeling particularly invested in their relationship. but her reaction towards the end that resulted in the most unnecessary conflict i’ve ever read really was the final line. her insistence on being the bigger person had nothing to do with her being a good person intrinsically and everything to do with her very serious need to go to therapy and work through everything she went through as a child. i wish the book had more to do w them working through different potential solutions to fix the money issue instead of just waiting until something miraculous fell on their laps. i wish she was more proactive in general considering this was her hearts truest desire allegedly, yet even when a solution magically appeared she almost didn’t take it and blamed him when it didn’t get resolved the way she wanted. i gave half a star bc i did finish it and at times i liked him but she was the worst.
I liked the book until we got to the 3rd act breakup. The way that was handled was unnecessarily problematic. FMC felt insecure so she overreacted, barely gave MMC a chance to explain, once she realizes that he had a point she decides to do nothing about it. If he didn’t go back groveling (which he shouldn’t have even done) she would’ve done nothing about it and continue to be miserable. Would’ve rather have seen some character growth and development instead.
When this popped up on my Facebook page with the tagline, Lucifer meets Practical Magic, I just knew I had to check it out (because these are two of my favourite go to watches). On reading a couple of the comments it was recommended to listen to the audiobook as people were raving about the narrators. And OH BROTHER I'm here to say they absolutely nailed it. Now I've listened to many dual narrations but this is only my second duet, and the chemistry between Shane East (Devlin) and Samantha Brentmoor (Violet) was off the charts phenomenal, they literally sizzled. I usually listen to an audio when I'm at work then continue the story the next day, well with this I couldn't stop listening until the end this is how much I freaking loved it. And trust me I totally fell in love with Mr East's voice who embodied the voice as The Devil, like dark sinful chocolate on the soul... Yep I'm absolutely gonna be hunting down more voice narrations by him.
Ms Piper is a new to me author but after listening to this, it definitely won't be my last by her. This was hilariously funny, moving in some spots and actually achieved one goal that some authors don't, made me blush while listening to a book. Yep I've found one that can make me swoon, laugh so hard I want to pee my pants, all the while make me not make eye contact with anyone in case they know what I'm listening to. I look forward to discovering more of her books...
When Violet Pepperdine is handed an eviction notice for her teashop, she does what any normal witch would do. Drink way too much with her friends, then decide to organise her spell book on a spreadsheet. The only problem, she drunk summons The Devil. And he is not amused...
I freaking adored Violet, sweet, kind, not one to really stand up and make waves while always second guessing herself, this girl immediately endeared herself to me because in some ways she reminds me of myself. Come on let's be honest, who's never got drunk and dialled someone with disastrous results. Not what she was expecting but absolutely what she needed, this girl had me rooting for her at every turn. Especially when it came to dealing with her slimy ex. Did I cheer for her, you betcha because she's just the kind of girl you can't help but love..
Damn if I didn't swoon over Devlin from the start, yes he's The Devil but even a prince of hell can get bored with trying to corrupt souls. Banished from hell and charged by his father to reap a million souls in a thousand years to reclaim his throne, he is not amused to be summoned by a drunk witch who has no idea what she has done. However, it's his journey to not only discover his feelings for Violet but actually care, which literally had me in a puddle of goo.
HELL to the yes, this spicy rom-com with opposites attract, fillled with humour will guarantee you a devilish good time.. Highly recommend 😁
