Tom Foster was Dead.
His teen soul hacks into the eternal database to find a handsome, troubled man about to take his own life. Tom borrows the large man’s mortal coil and returns to the living world.

With a second chance at life, the coder gains access to the eternal database. Through smart glasses, he can see everyone’s Scorecard floating above their heads. Positive numbers send folks to heaven. Negative numbers send sinners to hell. What happens when someone dies with a score of zero?

To design his own eternity, Tom must find a soul who died with a score of zero. If he can’t find one, he would have to make one.

With only seven days left on his Death Clock, Tom’s mission is to bank up enough good memories to enjoy in heaven, and score enough points to avoid hell.

This tale was co-written by a ghost that lives in my basement. When I get tired, he steps into my body and writes about his life and death. It's much like sleepwalking. I'd start my nights in bed and wake up the next morning in a blue armchair in front of a laptop. My job is to rearrange his words into a narrative. For me, this is a work of fiction. For him, it's a memoir. Either way, here's our story.

Intriguing!

This is such a gripping and thought-provoking novel. The book follows Tom Foster, a troubled teenager who finds himself balancing the afterlife after a sudden and violent death. As Tom struggles with his new reality, he encounters intriguing characters, including Sam, Mary, each with their own struggles and motivations.

My favorite part of the book is in its vivid world-building and imaginative portrayal of the afterlife. The author, Levi Drop creates a rich and immersive setting that will captivate your imagination. The concept of a Scorecard, where souls' actions in life determine their destiny in the afterlife, adds an intriguing layer of depth to the story, raising questions about morality and the nature of good and evil.

Another compelling aspect of the book is its exploration of complex characters and their inner struggles. Tom's journey of self-discovery and redemption is particularly engaging, as he struggles with his past mistakes and seeks to find meaning in his afterlife existence. Similarly, Mary's crisis of faith and Sam's pragmatic worldview add depth and nuance to the narrative, challenging me to question their own beliefs and assumptions.

Overall, this is a captivating and thought-provoking read that will appeal to fans of dark fantasy and philosophical fiction. Highly Recommended!

Sometimes I cringed at how intense a few of the scenes were, but I was always drawn back to the heart and soul of the characters. No spoilers, but I will say, the author very cleverly ties in Covid and other real life events that have happened, in ways that make a lot of sense. Tom is a good guy and I was always wanting the best for him and his self made Scooby gang. Just read it. It is original and clever.
Oh, and... never trust Sam and you should be fine.

Unexpected. Thought provoking. Wow.

Highly entertaining and thought provoking. What does the afterlife look like? And can it be hacked? Can you get a second chance? I went through a gamut of emotions while reading this, cheering Tom Foster on the entire time. This will be a book I read more than once. Wonderful!

Captivating, fast, and tense.
I was drawn into this book immediately with its engaging, wonderfully eyebrow-raising context of a malleable afterlife. Fast-paced action is woven through a recogisably crazy world with plenty of surprises and twists and a compelling slap of cynicism. Overall, this was a captivating read.

unique

OK this was a really cool idea. Definitely deviates from what I’m used to reading.
This is definitely not your average ghost story. Much more of an urban fantasy. However, after reading the author bio, it got even more interesting when he describes it as a ghost memoir. Lol

A Unique and Captivating Tale of the Afterlife

"Designing Hell: Ghost Vs Angel Book One" is a gripping exploration of the afterlife like no other. Author Levi Drop has crafted a story that is both inventive and thought-provoking, and I couldn't put it down.

The concept of an afterlife where your actions in life determine your fate is both intriguing and original. The idea of a Scorecard, where positive and negative deeds dictate whether you end up in heaven or hell, sets the stage for a thrilling adventure. What happens when someone's score is zero? The answer lies in the journey of our protagonist, Tom.

Tom's journey from an ordinary life to becoming part of the Afterlife Army is both humorous and clever. His ability to hack into Scorecards and Death Clocks adds a fascinating layer to the story, and you can't help but root for him as he seeks a second chance at life.

The characters in the book are well-developed and include some strong women, and Tom's transformation into a new body leads to both hilarious and heartwarming moments. His quest to fall in love and seek revenge is both relatable and entertaining, and you'll find yourself eagerly turning the pages to see how it all unfolds.

"Designing Hell" is a rollercoaster ride of emotions, blending humor, romance, and adventure seamlessly. With only 7 days left on his Death Clock, Tom's race against time keeps you engaged until the very end.

In conclusion, "Designing Hell: Ghost Vs Angel Book One" is a must-read for anyone looking for a fresh and imaginative take on the afterlife. It's a book that will make you ponder the choices you make in life while keeping you thoroughly entertained. Highly recommended!

Who should read this book: Lovers of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, Cynthia Hand, and Claire North will enjoy Designing Hell. And vice versa!

What you should drink while you're reading: For a novel that explores the afterlife with humor, adventure, and a touch of romance, a cocktail that combines elements of the unexpected and the familiar would be fitting. I suggest the Corpse Reviver #2. .The Corpse Reviver #2 is a classic cocktail with a name that perfectly fits the theme of the afterlife and resurrection present in "Designing Hell." Its complex and refreshing flavors mirror the inventive and thought-provoking nature of Levi Drop's storytelling. The use of absinthe adds a slightly mysterious and otherworldly touch, much like the unique elements of the afterlife depicted in the novel. Cheers!
