I don't even know where to start. The incredibly realistic cast of characters, the creative powers of the Wardens, the original (to me, anyway) storyline, or even the way it ended, the epilogue that indirectly told us that Rostigan finally found what he was searching for.
I don't know where to start, so I'll just say it was amazing - then curse myself for my inabilty to put my thoughts into words.

Enthält Spoiler zum ersten Teil der Reihe The Legacy of Lord Regret / Der Herr der Tränen.
Inhalt:
Salarkis, seines Zeichens Wächter und Fadenwirker, hat sich an seinem bekannten Rückzugsort verkrochen.
Er kann es kaum fassen, dass Forger versucht hat ihn zu töten. Wie kann er es wagen?
Wütend betrachtet er seine beiden Klingen, die er nach gut Dünken zum Töten aussenden kann. Das wird Forger ihm büßen. Und so schickt Salarkis ein letztes Mal seine Klingen aus um die beiden Handlanger von Forger, ohne die er keinen Schritt wagt, zu töten.
Rastlos überlegt er was er als nächstes tun könnte und beschließt zum Tal des Friedens zurück zu kehren. Dort, nahe der Wunde, würde ihn niemand suchen. Kurz darauf tritt er den Fadengang an und landet auf dem Plateau der Roshausberge. Die Wunde über dem Turm, dem einstiegen Ort Regrets Macht, klafft die Wunde blutig am Himmel. Die Ränder fasern weiter aus, je mehr Magie gewirkt wird.
Als Salarkis sich der Wunde nähert wird er von einem Sog erfasst, der ihm beinahe den Atem raubt. Seine Fäden vereinen sich mit der Wunde - kurz darauf wird er bewusstlos.
Unterdessen macht sich Forger bereit in die Schlacht zu ziehen. Er will Macht - viel Macht. Und weil er als einziger etwas davon hat, wenn Andere Schmerz empfinden, hat er nicht vor sie sich still und leise zu holen.
Yalenna und Rostigan sind aus Burg Althala. Noch immer kann sie es nicht fassen, dass so ein Würmchen von einem König es gewagt hat ihren Freund Braston zu ermorden nur um selbst auf den Thron zu kommen. Ohne die Hilfe Despirrows hätten er es nie geschafft, und dafür hasste Yalenna diesen Verräter.
Um die Moral des Heeres zu stärken haben sie keine andere Chance, als wieder einen König auf den Thron zu setzen. In diesem Fall eine Marionette - denn nichts anderes wird der neue König sein. Um seine Schuld an Brastons Tod halbwegs zu tilgen, wird Loppolo auf den Thron gesetzt, erhält jedoch keine Macht. Einzig Yalenna und Rostigan sagen ihm was er zu tun und zu lassen hat.
Währenddessen arbeiten sie weiter einen Plan aus die Wunde zu schließen, doch dazu müssen sie an Forger heran kommen und der hat sie alle zu Feinden erklärt.
Mergan, endlich aus seinem steinernen Grab befreit sehnt sich nach nichts mehr als endlich zu essen und zu trinken. In den letzten 300 Jahren musste er auf jegliches Wohl verzichten und er hat nicht vor auch nur einen weiteren Tag zu verschwenden.
So sitzt er bei einem leckeren Essen in einem Wirtshaus als Despirrow wieder einmal die Welt anhält. Das wurmt ihn, denn jetzt kann er weder sein Mahl genießen, das steinhart ist, noch sich an der jungen Dame neben ihn zu schaffen machen.
Als die Zeit wieder einsetzt stürmen Entflochtene das Dorf und ihm bleibt nichts weiter übrig als in ein Haus zu fliehen und es so zu verändern, dass keiner hinein - er aber auch nicht hinaus kommt.
Als ihn die Entflochtenen entdecken sind sie entschlossen an ihn heran zu kommen. Um sich ein wenig Würde zu bewahren tritt er nach erneuten Veränderungen der Fäden hinaus. Doch anstatt ihn zu töten, sind die Entflochtenen verwirrt. Sie glauben Regret vor sich stehen zu haben und Mergan schlägt gern in diese Kerbe.
So wird er zum zweifelhaften Anführer einer Horde Entflochtener die sich weder um Regeln noch um Andere scheren. Ob ihm mit dieser Truppe ein Sieg über seine ehemaligen Freunde, die ihn so schändlich verlasen haben, erringen kann wird sich zeigen.
Meinung:
Der zweite Band der 'Strange Threads / Die Saga von Rostigan und Tarzi' schließt genau an den ersten Band an, so dass ein lesen des zweiten Bandes, ohne den ersten zu kennen möglich, aber nicht klug ist.
Es geht weiterhin in verschiedenen Abschnitten weiter, so dass der Leser jede Figur verfolgen kann, bis sie irgendwann aufeinander treffen.
In diesem Band ist es allerdings weniger eine Geschichte über Rostigan und Tarzi, sondern mehr ein Buch über die Wächter und ihre Aufgabe.
Natürlich kommt Tarzi weiterhin vor, aber sie und Rostigan sind nicht mehr der Mittelpunkt. Rostigan hat weiterhin eine Hauptrolle, jedoch weitet sich das Buch eher auf Yalenna aus, die viel an seiner Seite ist.
Das hat mich jetzt allerdings weniger gestört. Die Geschichte ist schlüssig geschrieben und liest sich weg wie nichts.
Einige Szenen sind vielleicht nichts für schwache Nerven und auch ich fand sie teilweise etwas brutal. Ich weiß nicht ob das jetzt so dazu gehören musste, aber etwas weniger Verstümmelung hätte mir besser gefallen.
Das Ende des Buches versöhnt mich mit einigen Vorkommnissen aus dem ersten Band. Ansonsten passiert in diesem Buch eigentlich nichts, was ich nicht so nachvollziehen konnte. Es gibt keine sinnlosen Todesfälle - von einer Königin vielleicht abgesehen - so dass man dem Autor nicht vorwerfen kann, er würde wahllos Charaktere töten. Das ist mal eine neue Erfahrung =o)
Der Epilog macht eine Weiterführung der Reihe kaum möglich, so dass nach zwei Bänden wirklich Schluss ist.
Ich muss sagen, mir hat die Reihe wirklich Spaß gemacht und ich habe es genossen mal wieder in die Tiefen der Fantasy ab zu tauchen.

The Lord of Lies is the second and final instalment in the Strange Threads duology – a wonderful new Fantasy series centred on a group of Wardens – the strongest threaders (magic wielders) in Aorn. They had banded together centuries ago to defeat the tyrant Lord Regret, but were corrupted by his powers in the process. Aorn has since been off balance, but now it is even more so, with the return on the Wardens after a three hundred year absence, and unless the corruption is fixed, everything could be torn apart. The Lord of Lies is as much a story about the Wardens as a whole as it is about Rostigan as an individual, and I think it’s the perfect conclusion to this adventure.
In what I am beginning to recognise as Bowring’s trademark style, there are no truly evil characters in the book and every one perpetually hovers in a murky grey area, some closer to black than others. This book, like its processor, gives its readers the chance to spend time with all its characters – even the truly sick and depraved ones. There are scenes in the book that made me wince, others that had me crying out in horror, and a particular scene involving a queen that I will never, ever, forget. The book is paced well, the action is engaging and the plot flows smoothly, relentlessly towards its conclusion and then crescendos.
While the world doesn’t expand much from the previous book in terms of geography, The Lord of Lies deals heavily with the past, and readers gain a greater understanding of the events that transpired immediately following Regret’s death. Each character glimpses their lives had they not been corrupted with Regret’s powers, we are offered a chance to see the Wardens as they were before heading off to war, as untarnished human beings. I was surprised that I sympathised with Forger the most, who is changed drastically by Regret’s curse, and was an amazing person in his previous life. Similarly, as more was revealed about Rostigan, I began to understand the depths of the injustices that the Wardens had suffered over the centuries.
Yalenna and Rostigan are forced to used every trick they know to convince their fellow Wardens to give up their powers and return the world to the way it was before Lord Regret. Rostigan has spent three hundred years cultivating an identity for himself that has nothing to do with his powers as a Warden, and yet he is thrust into an impossible position where he must use them and risk further corrupting the world, all to stop the corruption! He has some hard choices to make, and while Yalenna helps him out as much as she can, I got the feeling that Rostigan was very alone. He struggles with some difficult questions, including whether evil deeds are tempered by a noble intent, and the morality of keeping those closest to him in the dark about his true nature.
The mature, unique writing of Sam Bowring is, I fear, overlooked too often for the mediocre and flashy. Australian Fantasy has benefitted from his contributions, and his works attest to his brilliance. The Strange Threads duology is a must read for fans of the genre, and those new to the genre, who often despair at lyrical descriptions and odd turns of phrase, will find this series both refreshing and worthwhile. The best part is – it’s already finished and published, which means you don’t have to wait months, or years, to find out what happens!

It took me far too long to get through this but I'm glad to have finally ticked off the reread of an old favourite.
LORD OF LIES follows on from the events of THE LEGACY OF LORD REGRET as Karrak-come-Rostigan and Yalenna continue their efforts to mend the world and the other wardens pursue.. less savory goals.
I love when I come back to a book after enough time that I've forgotten most of the finer details of the plot - beginning LORD OF LIES I could remember some very vague broad strokes but almost nothing else. It was almost like reading it for the first time all over again.
The damage to the Spell and the way that it is characterised - the sun going out like a light, things becoming untethered from reality and defying gravity - are wonderfully atmospheric and build a sense of growing dread throughout the story as it becomes clear that the world cannot continue to support the magic it hosts.
Forger is far better characterised in this volume, a lot more time is spent from his POV which - while sadistic - has a certain twisted honour, while we see that even the 'good' wardens aren't immune to selfish impulse.
Finally, it all builds to a satisfying and surprisingly tight and poignant ending.
As I said in my review of the first book, this duology is so hugely underrated. Just incredibly solid and creative fantasy told well. Please check it out!

Bus zur Hälfte keine wirkliche Handlung. Brutale Szenen, die nicht hätten sein müssen und Figuren, die mir nie wirklich ans Herz wuchsen. Es zog sich. Ich bin echt froh es geschafft zu haben.

The second half of the Strange Threads story is fantasy-astic.
The tale picks up precisely where it left off, proceeds at the same pace, and presents a final fifth that is perfect.
What a finale! I'm still marvelling over the plot construction -- did Bowring pen a single book and split it in two? Because The Lord of Lies lacks the smokey stench of stretched-out sequel, and charges onward without any attempt at filling in newcomers (a kindess, considering the small space between the release dates -- no one really needs reminded). Whatever his strategy, I'm wowed by how much relevant action can be harnessed in two volumes.
Bowring's villains still border on the unbearable, and violence pervades. If you're confident you'll brave both (and a small smattering of sexual references), I recommend this pair (did I mention how good they look side by side on the shelf?) as entertaining, lively action novels.

Man I blitzed this book. There's something eminently readable about Bowring's novels, once I get started on one of them it's a struggle to put it down. I definitely have to check out his Broken Well trilogy.
Well-written and characterised, and a satisfying end to the story started in the first novel. Very good.
I'd like to make note of how nice it is to see a duology in a genre seemingly dominated by trilogies and sagas and so on. That said, I'd also like to say that I would have probably enjoyed a third novel to spend in this world.

It's amusing. I am writing this review two hours after I wrote a review for The Legacy of Regret. The Lord of Lies is a great book, as great as the first book in fact. And really, I can't think of more things to write in this review that I haven't already written in my review of the first book.
It was an amazing read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The whole time I was on edge, wondering what'll happen next. And oh boy, there were a lot of happenings, and a particular scene that I wish I hadn't read. It's just too gruesome for me. There are some dark scenes in the book, but also amusing ones. I did not expect to chuckle on a few scenes, but I did. It's always a nice feeling knowing you finished a book and it ended on a happy note. I don't know why I was surprised at what Rostigan did in the end, but it was a shocking twist. I'm just glad that he finally found what he'd been searching for in the end. Tarzi is still the best, though.

Eine würdige Fortsetzung und noch ein Stück besser als Teil 1. Endlich zeigen die Charaktere, dass sie nicht nur weiß oder schwarz, sondern vielschichtig sind. Auch Rostigan bzw. Karrak erhält endlich deutlich mehr Profil, das war dringend nötig. Und im Gegensatz zu Band 1 war hier auch deutlich ein Spannungsbogen erkennbar.
Die Szene mit der Königin ... Na ja. Weiß nicht, ob man unbedingt nochmal so verdeutlichen musste, wie sadistisch Forger ist. Insgesamt muss ich sagen, ich würde die Dilogie keinem Minderjährigen zum Lesen geben, dafür herrscht zu viel Gewalt. Das Ende fand ich etwas einseitig und nicht ganz der Erzählweise bis dahin entsprechend.

Die Szene mit der Königin ... Na ja. Weiß nicht, ob man unbedingt nochmal so verdeutlichen musste, wie sadistisch Forger ist. Insgesamt muss ich sagen, ich würde die Dilogie keinem Minderjährigen zum Lesen geben, dafür herrscht zu viel Gewalt. Das Ende fand ich etwas einseitig und nicht ganz der Erzählweise bis dahin entsprechend.

This is the continuation of the story started in the first book. As I had already read that one, it was easy to get right into the story, as background, world and characters were already understood. The story is completed in this book, and it was a really enjoyable read.
I love the world created by this author, which is unusual yet very easy to understand without pages of background detail to set the scene. So, straight into the action, which I loved!
I recommend these books to anyone who loves fantasy, particularly if the reader is looking for something a bit different. I had got bored with fantasy recently, yet happily read these two books with no qualms. Give them a try!

Това е книга, която се каня да прочета от... ами, не знам... шест или седем години. Няма конкретна причина. Първата част не блестеше с нищо, но все пак загнезди в мен желанието просто да приключа с историята. И сега, доста години по-късно, сложих край на кратката поредица за лорд Сароу и Стражителите и това само ме радва.
Романът не е нищо впечатляващо, просто приятна история, която става за ангажиране на свободното време. Изненадаха ме множеството грешки в романа, които са пропуснати от редактора и коректора. Но бял кахър.

This is the second and final installment of the Strange Threads duology. It could easily have been a trilogy with plenty left to the reader's imagination. In saying that, there weren't any loose ends. I loved that Rostigan didn't have to change himself to be a hero. There were times when the story didn't hold my interest or the setting/descriptions weren't clear enough for me. However, all in all, it was a quick and simple read for me. Plenty of conflict, tension and excitement.

It's safe to say, I couldn't put this book down!
Some books lead up to what should be a fantastic climax yet let us down by rushing the details, but not this book.
This book has you on a knifes edge and brings you to the precipice, then reveals so much more than you expected.
I will never again eat an apple without thinking of this book.

Another delightful read bringing the Strange Thread duology to completion. This installment begins exactly where the first book ends. I found this as hard to put down as the first installment. Really enjoy this writers writing style. Fantastic storyline. Enjoyable characters. Everything you could want in an adventure fantasy.

Sam Bowring wraps up this series in style. I love the world-building and lore of threading that continues to keep me reading. There is plenty of action and clever lines all the way to the satisfying ending.

Nachdem die Anzahl der Wächter drastisch reduziert wurde und die Welt mehr und mehr aus den Fugen gerät, bleibt Rostigan nichts anderes übrig, als endlich zum entscheidenden Schlag auszuholen. Ein letzter Plan muss geschmiedet werden, um die Wunde der Welt endlich zu schließen, auch wenn es am Ende seinen eigenen Tod bedeutet. Doch was einst genommen, muss wiedergegeben werden …

Für alle die mich langsam kennen, ist es ja kein Geheimnis mehr, dass mich der Erstband »Der Herr der Tränen« richtig begeistert und vor allem auch überrascht hat. Allein das Setting, die Ideen, die Erzählweise, die Charaktere, es war einfach vieles so anders, originell und einfach mega stimmig und gut, da war klar, dass es der Zweitband und auch abschließende Band der Dilogie nicht leicht haben würde … und das war auch das Problem.
Vorneweg möchte ich sagen, dass mich »Wächter der Lüge« nicht vollends enttäuscht hat, ganz im Gegenteil, aber gerade der Anfang war wirklich unglücklich gewählt. Ich fand das erste Drittel richtig langweilig, nichtssagend und auch oft so unnötig, weil nichts passierte und einfach nur das aufgefrischt wurde, was im ersten Teil geschah. Das hätte man sich wirklich sparen können.
Doch dann kam, Kami sei Dank, die große Wende und der zweite Band wurde endlich wieder wie sein Vorgänger. Alles wurde für die entscheidende Schlacht vorbereitet, es gibt noch einige Wendungen, die man so definitiv nicht erwartet und das Ende ist für mich einfach auch richtig schön stimmig gewesen.
Nichtsdestotrotz muss ich einfach sagen, ich finde die Entscheidung des Autors oder Verlags (kann ich ohne Hintergrundwissen nicht genau sagen) unglücklich gewählt, aus der Geschichte eine Dilogie zu machen. Man hätte das erste Dritte des zweiten Bandes locker weglassen können und dafür den Rest zum ersten Band packen können. Dann wäre es ein schöner, dicker High Fantasy Schinken gewesen, den man aber so schnell nicht mehr vergisst und sich sowieso mega schnell weg gelesen hat.
Leider hat mich vorher niemand gefragt … (#spaß)

Gerade die Tatsache, dass mich »Der Herr der Tränen« so überraschen und begeistern konnte, veranlasst mich jetzt auch, nicht so streng mit »Wächter der Lüge« ins Gericht zu gehen. Wie oben bereits erwähnt hätte ich einen Einzelband mit weniger unnötiger Szenen aus dem Zweitband vorgezogen, aber alles in allem stellt diese Dilogie für mich wirklich mal wieder eine ganz andere Art der High Fantasy Literatur dar und ich finde einfach, jeder Fantasy Fan sollte sich diese beiden Bücher zu Gemüte führen.
Man wird definitiv nicht enttäuscht … ganz im Gegenteil.
Er muss sich entscheiden: Macht oder Ehre ...

Strange Threads is a fantasy duology and is really one book split into two so you need to read volume 1, The Legacy of Lord Regret, before moving on to The Lord of Lies.

The land of Aorn is under threat as the Great Spell is threatening to unravel reality.
Centuries previously a powerful threader named Mergan assembled a team to defeat Lord Regret and heal the land.
In doing so they received great gifts from the Spell. Powerful abilities such as manipulating time, emotions, etc. They were the Wardens.
In volume 1 the wardens were resurrected, both good and evil.
Volume 2 gives us more time and insight into the Priestess Yalenna, the diabolical Forger, Mergan who is becoming unhinged and Salarkis who has had a realisation and while doing so is trapped by the Unwoven, a species of humans that are, for want of a better word, wrong.
Then there's Rostigan. The Skullrender. Karrak. Lord of Crows.
The Lord of Lies.
Friend and lover of Tarzi the minstrel. Enemy turned friend of Yalenna. About to be reacquainted with his former brother in bloodshed, Forger.
What truths the Lord of Lies decides to reveal will impact on the future of the wardens, the people and the world.
An exciting story in a fascinating setting. The threaders and their magical abilities to alter the patterns of reality is such a great magic system.
Plenty of action, deceit, villainy, powers, and horrific evil deeds.
The ferocity of the Unwoven and the Silkjaws, the despair from the giant worm attacks and the mystery of the spire.
Above all it's the relationships between the wardens and glimpses of their past lives that gives this fantasy such a unique feel.
I loved it.

A FEW SPOILERS!
Finished with this book now.
I liked how the story progressed till the end, though while it was interesting to read, then sadly I have to say, the ending was a little boring as I was sure it would go that way and I was hoping something would happen that would amaze me.
I liked the characters though, but again, at a stage hoped that Forger would be a little more...evil, he kind of gave in too easily in the end. Suppose I was hoping he'd set up traps or do something after discovering Karak had betrayed him, but the man relied on brute strength only, a little stupid if you ask me, considering he must have known that if worst comes he'd have to fight two Warders.
But perhaps, in a way, that was his way of doing what was right? While he said the vision he'd seen didn't change him, then maybe it really did and that was his way of insuring it would come to pass, the restoring of the world?
Guess I can speculate which ever way I wish and the end result will still be the same.
The duology is worth a read, but don't go in it expecting everything you know to be thrown upside down :)

Eigentlich sind es 4,5 Sterne. Ein sehr schönes Buch, genauso schön geschrieben wie Teil 1, und ein guter Abschluss.
Dennoch musste ich einen kleinen Abzug machen, weil mich an dem Ende ein paar Kleinigkeiten gestört haben. Zum Beispiel fand ich die Geschichte um Tarzi unvollständig, da sie nie erfahren hat, wer Rostigan wirklich ist. Ich hätte gerne erlebt, wie sie mit dieser für sie schockierenden Neuigkeit umgegangen wäre.
Außerdem bin ich ein bisschen wehmütig, denn ich hätte gerne mehr darüber herausgefunden, wie es den anderen Wächtern nach dem Kampf ergangen ist.

Once again Sam Bowring has managed to lure me into a delirious and captivating world. In fantasy, for me this is what's most important- the hypnotism of being transported somewhere completely different. Lord of Lies is exciting, clever and deeply haunting, causing us to question what really matters in life. As well as fantastic action scenes, Lord of Lies is surprisingly tender at times, showing Bowring's ability to weave a tale that appeals to all the senses. A master storyteller.

An enjoyable follow-up to the first book, with a satisfying conclusion. I'd like to have imagined a follow-up series continuing Rostigan's story, but the epilogue concluded things to the point I supposed a follow-up would be unlikely.
As with the first book, I would have loved a bit more detail of the world from time to time, to add to the engaging story line. Overall, I found it entertaining, and enjoyed the quirkiness of its lighter tone.

Love this series! Am a bit over long series so this was just the right length. Sam Bowring has this amazing ability to make you fall in love with all his characters even the bad guys! I love how his hero's are real people, they have flaws & imperfections & are not impossibly good! I finished both books in well under a week! Awesome read from start to finish!

Das Buch hat mir wirklich sehr gut gefallen. Die Magie mit Fäden darzustellen finde ich sehr gelungen und das Ende hat die Geschichte für mich perfekt gemacht. Insgesamt kam in dem Buch nie Langeweile auf und ich empfehle es jedem der auf Fantasy steht

Can't remember exactly what I said about the first book except that it was easy to read and reasonably engaging. The same certainly goes for the second. Although I more or less saw the conclusion coming, last minute plot twist and all, I still appreciated the way it was all executed.

Pretty good for light read. It is a good break from my recent poor run with fantasy. I am excted to read the Broken Well Trilogy, the teaser was exciting.
