The continuing saga of Dominic the teenager from the twenty-first century who was abducted by aliens. No one on Earth knows Dominic is now a member of the outlawed Black Star Gang, apart from his friend,Peter, who's also a member. If the United Council of Planets find out he'll be brain washed, but saving the universe from the UCP is worth therisk. With resources running low and under constant surveillance the Black Star Gang must save a small planet from being destroyed before it's too late. A terrific science fiction adventure, notable for its humpur and its lively humanand alien characters.
I’m a huge, huge fan of Memoirs of a Dangerous Alien, but remember being quite disappointed with this one – and re-reading as an adult confirms this. After the UCP detonated the ‘fake nukes’, Dominic and his friend Peter are at a loose end in Somerset – but the galactic goings-on aren’t quite finished with them yet.
Unfortunately, this book lacks the structure, pace and believable nature of the first. Things seem to happen almost at random, with little ‘human-like’ interaction. It’s no real secret that Dominic and Fenella are going to run into each other, but when they do, their discussions are almost cursory. Maggie Prince gets rid of several central characters in a fairly abrupt fashion, and the plot sort of makes sense, but just kind of meanders around in a weird way. It’s unsatisfying, and the twists just leave you thinking ‘well, if the UCP is going to do *that*, then what’s the point?’.
There’s a few new characters introduced, but some of them are either underdeveloped or just way too late in the plot.
Do yourself a favour and pretend there’s only Memoirs in this series…
I was a little disappointed with this book. I read the first one ages ago, and was looking forward to the sequal. But to be honest I read the first one sooo long ago that the sequal seemed far too childish. It was still worth a read though.
