Lucy Cable is good at reading bones. Give her a skull, and she can sketch what the person’s face looked like--a quirky little party trick she’s shrugged off as useless all her life. Until she sees a skeleton on display at a museum and recognizes it as her friend. Shocked and horrified, she sees suspicious markings on the bones and realizes her friend met a gruesome end. But who killed her and how did she end up as a museum piece?
When other people die in bizarre, inexplicable ways, Lucy realizes a maniac is in their midst. She’s pretty sure The Widower is behind the murders, but she doesn’t know how to stop him. She’ll need to figure it out fast…before her snooping around puts her next on the Widower’s list.
Having the ability to clothe bones with flesh in her mind’s eye, Lucy understandably doesn’t enjoy visiting bone museums, but when her friends insist she attend a gala event at an ossuary, she reluctantly goes. While there, she makes the horrifying discovery that she knows the missing person of one of those skeletons.
This is a creepy story, and I can’t help but feel that Lucy needs to work with the police on a permanent basis. I hope the author stays with this topic and writes another along this line—maybe set it in the Paris catacombs.
I make no bones about it, “The Widower” is a great read! A series of strange deaths begin to plague an Oklahoma town. People are being reduced to skeletons. The story’s tension comes from worry that the likeable main character will meet the same end. Will she? Won’t she? You’ll have to read to find out! So bone up on the anatomy of horror with “The Widower”!
I don't know about you but I find all museums a bit creepy. But add to that, envision having the ability to totally flesh out a skeleton, stare into its terrified eyes as blood spatters cling to the gaping mouth, and then realize that that once lovely face belongs to an old high school buddy. Nope. Not my idea of a fun afternoon at the museum.
Love, love, love this wicked little short story. Well-written and creepy with unexpected twists, this story will keep you turning pages. Very clever and imaginative plot, with a gruesome method of murder I've never seen before in a book. Highly recommend!
A suspenseful short story. A great read if you like horror or suspense. It's got great characters, a cool villain, lots of action, and definitely creepy.
