Leona I thought I could handle it, but I was wrong. My ex just married my sister at a fancy hotel in upstate New York. The party is just getting going when I reach the last of my strength. I can’t take it anymore. With no idea where to go, I run into the woods, hoping to catch my breath. In my panicked state, I get off the hiking trail and lose my way. The music is so far away, I’m not even sure what direction it’s coming from. That’s when I see a lion. I must have lost my mind because there are no lions in New York. My instinct says to run, but there’s something in his eyes that’s almost human. I see pain and hopelessness, and in that moment, I can relate to this beast. Thinking he must be injured, I carefully draw close enough to see there’s an injection dart protruding from his chest. I might lose an arm for my troubles, but I move in and pull the needle.
Cade At first, I imagined the beautiful brunette running toward me was a woodland sprite. I’ve been stuck in my manticore form for too long. Soon I’ll lose my humanity completely. I don’t know who shot me, but with the poison still pumping in from the syringe, I can’t turn back. Then she speaks, telling me to please not bite her. Her voice is sweet and soothing. She pulls the damned needle. I immediately shift into a man, wanting to know more about the angel who saved me. So, when she runs, I chase her. Why she’s more scared of a naked man than the monster? I don’t know, but I’m willing to spend the rest of my life trying to find out.
* * * Trigger There is some violence against women from the villain in this story.

Idk man, idk. All I want from these little novellas is to be entertained for an hour or two. But this was just too mediocre to be entertaining, I lost interest and it's less than 100 pages long. It was ridiculous, and not in a good or fun way, just poor writing. To be honest there wasn't a single special, or even interesting thing, about it. Meh
I tried to read this back in May 2024 and promptly forgot about it (KU remembered). Since it’s so short and the MMC being a manticore was intriguing, I gave it another shot. The 40ish pages I read were just meh …. Sex hat happened but didn’t draw one in. Tbh I could finish this but it would receive a 2 at best so imma scudaddle and cut down my time wastage.
Leonal thought she could handle it. She was wrong! Her ex just married her sister at a fancy hotel in upstate New York and realizes that she just can't do it any longer, so she runs. She has no idea where she is going, but she heads towards the woods, hoping for a moment alone to catch her breath. In her current state, she goes off the trail, and the next thing she knows, she's lost her way. That's when she sees a lion. She knows she must have lost her mind because there are no lions in New York. Her first instinct is to run, but she realizes there is something in the lions eyes that is almost human. She is sure he has got to be injured, so she creeps closer and realizes there is an injection dart hanging from his chest. She's determined to help him, so she takes her chance while talking to him and quickly pulls the dart out.
Cade thinks he's got to be seeing things himself because out of nowhere, a beautiful brunette comes running towards him. He's got to have been stuck in his manticore form for too long. He knows he will lose his humanity completely very soon. He has no idea who shot him, but with the poison still pumping in from the syringe, he will gladly accept help. Then the beauty speaks, asking him please not to bite her. Her voice is sweetly serine, and the minute she pulls the syringe out, he immediately turns back into a man wanting to know more about the woman who rescued him.
The only problem is that she seems more scared of the naked man that's now in front of her than the lion that she faced head-on.
Andie Fenichel is such a talented author. It doesn’t matter what genre she writes in she always excels in it. I have read the entire havendoor series and really enjoyed all of the Pettigrew shifters, so I figured I would enjoy this as well, and I was right. This book was so good that it only took me a day to read it, and I was actually sad that the story was over. Now I'm excited just waiting for the next book that Ms. Fenichel will write because I love her shifter stories.
Andie Fenichel has a gift being able to tell a whole, satisfying story in a short format. I rarely enjoy novellas because everything happens so fast that I can't believe it. Not so with Andie, I just love her stories. This is about Cade Petrova who is a lonely manticore, part man and part lion. His family is long gone and he came back to the land of his birth but he's the only one of his kind in this resort area. He meets Leona DeRosa when she escapes from her sister's wedding to Leona's ex fiancé. Her family is insisting she be happy for them because they're family. She's just devastated because she found out her three year relationship with Darek was a farce and he was seeing her sister behind her back. As she runs away from the reception she finds Cade in his monster form with a dart in his chest. Instead of being afraid she's determined to help him and removes the dart. This sets up a fabulous adventure of finding a new love and discovering who is trying to hurt him.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I enjoyed the story, it was a bit messy at times and some characters were so over the top, but it was entertaining. I liked Leona and Cade, they were instantly pulled towards each other and it was funny how she ran away as soon as he turned into a very handsome man. She was very hurt by her ex and her fucked-up sister so I fully understood her hesitance. Cade knew instantly that Leona was his mate and was determined to show her what she meant to him. He was cute, caring and gentle, but also wild and primal. The mother was a bit flip floppy, first she was kinda a bitch just like her younger daughter Melony, then she was all accepting and loving. It felt a bit weird. I don't know if meeting Astra was necessary for the plot, we could have a bit more of just the two of them building a deeper relationship instead. But I liked the novella, and I'm looking forward to reading more of Andie's books ;)
A good short fantasy story. Leona has had enough of her sister's wedding. Her sister married the man that Leona was engaged to just a short while ago. It seems her sister always has to have her way. As Leona escapes to the woods for a while, she gets turned around and a little lost when she hears a sound of pain. There is a beast there with a problem. She isn't afraid of the beast, but when he turns into a man, she runs. What is wrong with her? She must be hallucinating. Did she just see that beast turn into a man? Cade isn't sure he will be able to turn back into a man after being shot with a dart. If he doesn't turn soon, he will stay a monster. When Leona happens upon him, he knows right away that she is his mate. Will she want to be with a man/monster like him? If she stays, he will protect her with his life.
Only word I can think of to describe this was bland. A few others come to mind, however, like "predictable", "boring" and "straight-forward".
If you are wanting a short monster type romance to pick up your reading goals, this was fine enough if you can forgive the litany of spelling errors and lack of personalities to the main characters. It was not horrible, I did not feel like I had to force myelf to read through, but I wasn't fully enjoying it.
The smut was probably the most interesting part of this all, and the only reason it gets that score is because there's like a little manticore tail play that happens around her ass. Otherwise, even that was boring.
The "twist" was fully predictable and honestly I do not think it needed to be a conclusion in this. They could have just left it as coincidence and it would not have changed much, or anything, of the book.
Minor spoilers so if you don’t want them, don’t read.
1. How did the shooter Cade was a shifter? And how did Cade manage to get away far enough that he wasn’t found for THREE days? 2. That mom’s attitude turned around pretty fast with Cade, being all accepting and NICE, and i’m not talking about the first meeting.🙄 3. The plan to “trap” the shooter involved a friend of Cade but didn’t involve Leona? And all the plan involved was calling the police? What the actual fudge😬🙄 she could’ve been the one to call the police for crying out loud.🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 4. Leona kept going back and forth withher feeings🙄 5. Cade didn’t reassure Leona immediately that mates are for LIFE. Dude that’s fated mates for shifters rule number1🙄🙄🙄🙄
This was a fantastic story! Loved every second of it! Leona was at her sister’s wedding, her sister who was marrying her ex! She needed some air and space and wandered out into the grounds. Cade was a manticore shifter who had been shot and was stuck in his manticore form. When Leona comes across him she feels a connection, she helps him but runs scared when he turns back into a man. Cade is determined to find out why his mate is more scared of his human form than his manticore. Sweet, steamy story with amazing chemistry, a loving, caring, protective hero, danger, mystery, suspense, a little family drama and a wonderful HEA
Leona dodges a bullet in her ex Derek as he marries her sister in the Catskills and meets the man/manticore of her dreams. This story had it all from a destination wedding, a majorly dysfunctional family of the bride and a plot twist to capture a beast. It as great to see how Leona and Cade would survive the wedding festivities.
This as the first book I’ve read by this author and I plan on checking out her other books as well. This story had solid writing in characters and plot and kept me hooked throughout as I read this in one sitting. My thanks to the author.
The Manticore's Mate (Kindle Edition) by Andie Fenichel I gave this 4 1/2 stars to Cade and Leona's short story. They have a strong attraction even if she meets him in his Manticore shape. There is angst and jealous younger sister nd and cheating ex. Suspense, danger, disloyalty, tears, love and lots of steam and finding new friends, all to get to a HEA. Reasons I enjoyed this book: Action-packed Entertaining Happily Ever After Haunting Wonderful characters Romantic Twisted Steamy Page-turner Tear-jerker Witty Easy-to-read Great world building Scary.
I wanted to love this SO MUCH, so it devastates me to say it wasn't for me.
First off,
the writing - it seems like a fanfic I would have written in highschool, not much descriptive language just a lot of telling me what's happening and surface level exposition. The smut wasn't very hot either.
Pacing - this goes by SUPER fast, within the first 3 pages we already meet the hero and the plot blazes just as fast after that.
Lastly, the characters - Leona comes across as sad and awkward and cade has no personality aside from being a mythical creature.
This one wasn't really for me. The story was hard to care about since we don't know anything about monsters or how this pharmaceutical company knows about them, or what the world view is. And the MMC was kind of a push over. He needs rescued the whole book and he doesn't really seem capable of protecting himself or his mate.
The whole nymph thing had no baring to the story so not sure why it was there.
And the smexy times are fine but at one point he uses his tail in her ...ahem... Back door and all I could think it's it's a scorpion tail that is pointy and has venom? No thanks 🤣
Honestly, the story had potential even if it is unoriginal. However, despite the amount of lust, the romance was as absent as the plot development. It read like an outline rather than a story. The leading male was perfect, like any true Mary Jane character. While the female protagonist had numerous character flaws, you never fall in love with the character. My advice for the author? Take this manuscript, do more research, and use this creation as a rough draft. You have it in ya.
This is a sweet little short story about a woman who didn’t fear the beast, but ran from the man. It’s giving clear “man vs bear” vibes, and once you meet her ex you’ll understand why she’s a bit skittish around men. Cade, though… whooo, Cade has some mad skills. Every move he makes on her, from the finger-kissing, hand-holding in the car, to the back of the neck kiss, to that move where he spins her on the bed by hooking an arm around her legs …. Hot… oh, and then the moving to a sitting position…. I need to read more by this author.
Leona is having the worst time at her sister wedding to her ex fiance. She cannot believe they are together and she has to be here at their wedding. But she gets a bonus in finding Cade. He is what she needed and will fill all her hope and dreams. Cade is stuck in his manticore self by someone who wants to expose him as a monster. But he is rescued by his mate. He has been looking for her for a long time. He thought she would be like him a monster but he is overjoyed even if she is a human instead. While uncovering who is trying he expose him they find their way to a HEA.
I received this as an arc from the author and I’m voluntarily leaving my honest review.
This was a really good monster romance. It was a short, well written story with a good flow. The storyline was entertaining and had a little unexpected twist that I really enjoyed. Leona and Cade had a lot of chemistry and I really liked the connection to the “Brothers of Scrim Hall” series which I have read a few of previously.
It has been a while since I have read a fantasy novel and found this novella rather enjoyable. Despite the obvious differences between Leona and Cade, there is an instant attraction, mutual protectiveness, and betrayal. Just for a short while I enjoyed the heart-thumping adventure and steamy romance, and was especially happy that the story came to a happy conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
The story is OK, kind of cute. I got stuck a few times on words that didn't make sense, weren't even actual words, or were the entirely wrong word. "The rouge of her nipples" confused me. Did the author mean the red? The blush?
"Needly" really threw me off. Not a word.
But by the time I got to "Femme fetal" I realized the book just wasn't edited. Or the editor doesn't speak fluent English. I laughed so hard at that, I forgot what was going on.
Cade was rescued by Leona and she saved his life and future
Leona had escaped into the woods from her younger sister's weekend wedding extravaganza. She stumbles upon a manticore but isn't frightened she feels his beast calling to her heart. Satisfying karmic smack down when Derek her ex and nasty sister and up in cuffs. Great HEA for this combustible couple!
I was looking for a short story that didn't leave me confused because it was rushed or did not make sense. The Manticore's Mate was perfect. The storyline was well-thought-out, and the sequence of events made sense. It had the perfect balance of spiciness, family drama, and suspense. I cannot wait to read more from Andie Fenichel.
I was totally surprised by this story. I wasn’t going to read it, I figured I might make it through one chapter. Surprise, wow, I am so glad I read it. This was an amazing story.
A sweet, cute and romantic story. I enjoyed their cute/meet. Then how their romance bloomed. Even her sister and new brother-in-law couldn't stop them from getting their HEA.
Good lord this girl is insecure. Since this is a novella, everything is quick and surface level. I think Leona spent more time crying and thinking insecure thoughts than actually doing anything else.
Fast paced, steamy read.....yet a full story. I liked how such a large monster can have such a gentle soul. These two were meant for each h other and fell fast. A happy ending with mystery solved
These novellas in this series are full of fun adventure romance and just enough spice! I like that I can just sit down and read a whole Story in 1 sitting. I really liked Cade and Leona's story.
This is my first book by this author, and I enjoyed most of it. Loved Cade, but I was irritated by how Leona kept questioning his feelings for her. The story flowed well, and the HEA was well written.
Short insta love with plenty of spice. Some of the scenes felt too fast and kind of jumped where the characters were, which distracted me. Story was also a little predictable. Overall, it was okay.
I liked the story line and it all happens during a wedding weekend. Leona and Cade worked well as a couple. I enjoyed her family were the antagonists. It took a couple of days to read but it is good.
