"The danger lies in keeping secrets."

When I first started IN CONFIDENCE I wasn't sure whether I was going to like the story. I was looking for a good contemporary romantic suspense but I had never read anything by this author. It began with the prologue set five years before the remainder of the story: Cameron Ford, a true crimes writer had lost his teenage son to suicide. Divorced for awhile, he lived in New York while his ex-wife and son lived in Texas. When he arrived at the funeral he wanted answers and, in a nutshell, blasted his son's high school guidance counselor. Rachel Forrester should have known!

Cam had settled in Rose Hill, Texas and five years went by when he witnessed his elderly neighbor pass out on her lawn. Long-story-short, the lady had a medical condition and was Rachel's mother. Rachel was now in the middle of a divorce from her lowlife adulterous husband. Before long, she and her children moved in with her mother.

A very slow-paced romance built between these two unlikely people and I had no problem with that. At the same time, Rachel's son Nick was juggling high school and playing sports: the same thing Cam's son had done before he killed himself. Cam fought a war with his memories.

This was a long story at 443 pages. When I read a suspenseful book I want to feel a rush and a fair amount of intenseness. I find it helps to keep the plot flowing at a rapid pace. At times, I found it lacking in the storyline. I knocked off two stars because the author could have easily edited out, at minimum, about 100 pages. There was just too much unnecessary filler.

The positives? I enjoyed seeing Cam's grumpy character get past his deep distrust of women and, in particular, Rachel. Once they acknowledged themselves as allies, their burgeoning romance was actually sweet. Especially the way Cam treated the sensitive Rachel; her husband had certainly done a number on her. Also, writing teens into a conspiracy can be tricky but I thought Ms. Young did a good job. And though I may have initially steered away from the very dark storyline, I found myself invested too far; the mild suspense was good.

I thought the main character was a bit of a push over and it annoyed me a bit...the love story was sweet.

The cover seemed boring but I was surprised in a good way. I loved the characters and how the narrator switched between many of them. I think Nick should gain the award for being the best big brother out there. The family dynamic seemed super sweet. It is worth reading. I happen to get this from my Grandmas friend and I am happy I was able to read this. It is great. The reason it only gets 4 out of 5 is because I read other books that had me hooked on more. While this is a great book and sure one of my favs it doesn't beat the other books I read. A great romance and crime fiction novel.

"Strettamente confidenziale" è un bella lettura suspense, la parte "crime" mi è piaciuta molto, così come quella romantica che resta più marginale ma dà un buon contributo al libro.
Mi sono piaciuti i personaggi, soprattutto Cameron e Rachel e anche quelli minori li ho trovati ben strutturati.
Lo stile di scrittura di Karen Young è scorrevole, attento, privo di fronzoli e penso che sia perfetto per questo genere di letture.

It was different than the typical books I read. Normally I don't read romances but I was burned out on my mystery/action books. The story was so slow and there were some parts that could have been skipped. We already knew that Rachel and Cam will fall in love (we read an excerpt at the start of the novel of them having a romantic moment), so why was this plot DRAGGED out? Sure it added realism but for the reader, who already knows they are going to be together, it was a tiresome chore watching the banter from Rachel. She reminded me of a teenage girl not admitting her crush to her mom and getting mad at the mom for bringing it up.

Thank God I was in my 30s when my parents got divorce. I couldn't imagine it being an adolescent. Also the mom was wanting to hide the fact from her kids. This is the worst thing a parent can do is try to hide stuff that affects the kids. Just tell them straight up and don't lie. "Yes Dad was fucking another partner. He cheated behind all of our backs." Just straight up tell them. DO NOT tell them that you will tell them later like Rachel here, especially when the kids witnessed their dad getting his ass whooped by his bestie coworker.

To be honest I made it to Page 234 and then I decided to skip pages. First I skipped ten pages, read some and nothing serious developed, read a few more, skip some others. Eventually I made it to the the nitty-gritty that held my interest. It was dealing with the Coach. That is the part that interests me and not Rachel's love life.

This book was well written and that retrospect and held my interest. Unfortunately it was a slow novel and I had to skip many many many many many many many many many many pages.

I enjoyed the characters a lot. They were likable, but realistic. The twist in the book wasn't what I was expecting at all, so I really give it a thumbs-up for that.
