Parthian Empire: A History from Beginning to End

Discover the remarkable history of the Parthian Empire...
Free BONUS Inside!

Across four centuries, the Parthian Empire expanded its dominion over vast territories, boasting some of the most effective military units of the ancient world. Still, this is one of the forgotten empires of the ancient world. The reason is principally that, for the last two hundred years of its history, the Parthian Empire found itself in conflict with one of the most powerful empires of all the Roman Empire. Winston Churchill said, “History is written by the victors,” and never has this been truer than in the case of the Parthian Empire. The Parthians left few written records, and most of what we know about the empire comes from its two main adversaries—first the Greeks and then, for most of its history, the Romans. Fortunately, modern scholarship and archaeology have recently helped us to understand a little more about this ancient empire.

In this book, we discover the story of one of the most feared empires in the ancient world, one whose innovative approach to military strategy enabled it to inflict upon the Roman Empire one of the worst defeats it ever endured. Here, we bring to light the relatively unknown story of the Parthian Empire.

This book is part of the Hourly History Collection (https://hourlyhistory.com).

These books are mostly about historical events or historical persons in a very concise way (you can read it within an hour).

This one is about Parthian Empire, one of the most important empires on the turn of the ages (2nd century BC until 2nd century AD) and this was the only unburbaric nation that could hold Roman Empire on hold for centuries.

"Given the importance that the Parthian Empire had in terms of commerce, culture, and technology, it is interesting to ask why this empire is now virtually forgotten. Part of the answer lies in the lack of surviving written records from this period. A great deal of the little we know about the Parthian Empire comes from Roman and Greek accounts, and they are clearly more than a little biased."

“In a Parthian war, a Roman victory is a defeat.”

“No one would feel the greatness of Rome until one has realized that gold coins are only fit to pave floors.” —Marcus Licinius Crassus

“He, who has only one enemy, meets him everywhere.” —Iranian proverb

“What is brought by the wind will be carried away by the wind.” —Iranian proverb

Given the importance that the Parthian Empire had in terms of commerce, culture, and technology, it is interesting to ask why this empire is now virtually forgotten. Part of the answer lies in the lack of surviving written records from this period. A great deal of the little we know about the Parthian Empire comes from Roman and Greek accounts, and they are clearly more than a little biased.

Although it remained in power for 400 years, the Parthian Empire is often treated by historians as an interim polity, a king of cultural non-sequitur, between the true “Persian” dynasties of the region.

I had a rudimentary knowledge about the Parthian empire prior to reading this book. I read references to it here and there when reading about ancient civilizations. After reading this book I realized that it was very significant in the ancient world. The empire was in Persia, modern day Iran but the territory extended to India and China. Because of this they played an important role in the Silk Road. Their art and architecture was a blend of many influences.

The book covers the Parthian empire’s relationship with Rome - sometimes peaceful and at other times there were many conflicts. I found the book very informative and it’s a shame that the Parthian empire is not given more importance in historical accounts.

The Parthians

I liked this book for the information presented in it. You don't hear much of the Parthians, but they should be told about. They were a rival to Rome and were plenty able to hold off the Romans. The major problem for the Parthians was internal strife and the Romans. The record of these people is also mostly second hand.

The Parthian, who? What?

I can not believe that Roman’s most powerful rival was not mentioned in my history classes.
The Carthaginians are always given as the greatest threat to the Roman Empire.
It just goes to show that the pen is mightier than the sword.
