A love she can't remember ... and he can't forget.
When she was 25, Emilia's brain was damaged in a car accident. While she can remember everything from her life up until the accident, she can't form new memories for longer than a day.
What do you do when your memory resets itself each night? Who can you trust? Can you still live a meaningful life? Can you find love? Two years after her accident, these questions are still plaguing Emilia, and there's one person who seems to have the answers.
Her roommate, Eric, has been acting strangely, not at all like the platonic best friend she remembered from before her accident. What has changed since then? What has she forgotten? And why won't Eric just tell her what it is?
Tessa lives nestled among Utah’s stunning mountains with her husband and three children. She prefers admiring the peaks with a warm mug of coffee over skiing or hiking them, but she’s been known to do both on occasion.
For money, she works part-time as an engineering consultant. For joy, she stays home with her kids. And in every stolen moment between the two, she writes.
Tessa believes the best stories take you somewhere far and strange, and leave you changed when you return. Her books focus on real characters in unreal situations—for readers who crave escape, big feelings, and hard-earned happy endings. When she’s not writing, she’s likely feeding her perpetually hungry children, juggling their absurdly busy schedules, or crafting an excuse to open a bottle of wine.

If you’re a fan of rom-com movies, you’ve probably seen 50 First Dates, a film I’ve always loved for its mix of humor and hardship. So when Tessa Alexandra, the author of One Day at a Time, reached out and invited me to read her debut book dealing with the same subject matter as the film—short-term memory loss—I was instantly intrigued. I quickly read the first few chapters available on Amazon, was impressed with the author’s writing, and found myself unable to stop thinking about Emilia’s story. I knew I wanted to read more.
While the film does touch on the difficulties of someone living with short-term memory loss, I always wanted to dive more into the subject, curious as to how a long-term relationship with someone could really work for someone with short-term memory loss. Alexandra does a good job of showing us Emilia’s day to day, without it growing repetitive for the reader. She manages to show how repetition is necessary and important, but each day holds something new.
I enjoyed watching Emilia uncover the mystery of why her friend and roommate Eric is acting so strange—even though it’s fairly clear to the reader what’s going on. The mystery of it all successfully conveys Emilia’s confusion of waking up each day thinking it’s two years in the past. She’s surrounded by a wonderful friend group, who only want what’s best for her, but Eric’s devotion toward Emilia making her own decisions without any other influences is commendable, yet heartbreaking. His yearning for Emilia to find happiness and completeness, and his dedication to seeing that goal achieved, is what’s at the heart of the book.
One of my favorite aspects of the novel is how the author explores how our bodies can remember things our minds might not. One example, Emilia has learned to ski since her accident, but she never believes she can do it until she physically tries it; her body remembers what her brain doesn’t. Usually this kind of bodily response is an experience that happens with negative situations, so it’s nice for Emilia’s experience to be a positive one.
One Day at a Time is written in third-person limited point of view, which enables the reader to feel some of the confusion Emilia is experiencing. It’s also an open-door romance, which I wasn’t expecting for some reason, but I thought was done well. The book is mostly set in the late 1980s, which also adds in a level of nostalgia to the story.
While I enjoyed the characters, the setting, and the plot, what kept me reading was wondering how Emilia’s story could be wrapped up satisfactorily. I wondered, can she ever really have a happy ending? No spoilers, but I think the author handled it beautifully AND realistically. One Day at a Time is a heartrending love story that deserves to be read, and one I won’t be forgetting!
I regret taking so long getting around to reading this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. My only complaint is that the main character really started getting on my nerves about 50-60% through the book. Nobody is truly that self sacrificing. Well, maybe some people are but it drives me nuts. I really appreciated the epilogue. All standalone HEA romance novels NEED an epilogue & this one wrapped it all up nicely… except for Bartholomew.
⭐️5/5 | 🌶️ 2.5/5 | Friends to Lovers | Memory Loss | Roommates | Supportive Friends | Strong Female MC | 3rd Person POV | Set in the 80s
This was such an achingly beautiful story of will, resilience, and enduring LOVE. This book happened to tear my heart apart at every turn yet somehow put it back together in the most wonderful way. The way this was written makes you feel like you are a part of Emilia and Eric’s story.
A story about Emilia who suffers from short-term memory loss due to a car accident and brain damage where her brain resets to that very day after her car accident (yes, very 50 first dates – but trust me, give it a chance). This is her story of how her limitations despite how difficult and taxing, never held her back from pursuing something she is passionate about, as well as finding her way to Eric. Emilia is such a strong FMC, to have to go thru the emotions of what she has to feel every single time she wakes up was overwhelming. Tessa did great in painting us a picture of what it would be like to live with this type of memory loss by going thru the motions of the day to day in detail. The internal conversations she was having made me connect with her on a deeper level and understand the restraint, confusion, and fear.
Eric was AMAZING. He was written and characterized so well! I felt myself crumbling around him every time because of the pain, anguish, angst and love he had for Emilia. He was very delicate and understanding towards her despite being left a little in the dark as to why she decided to erase their recent history. How he protected Emilia’s ability to make decisions for herself and have some control over her life was impeccable. I shed a few tears here and there because I just felt and connected with his emotions so much, it’s as if I was living it.
We learn a little bit about mind vs body memory, I like that it was expanded coz it gave us the hope and longing that somehow, it plays a big part as to why this love story deserved a chance. BEAUTIFUL! So much to take away from this - Being present, taking a leap of faith, trusting your instincts, paving a new road when one closes and loving fiercely.
Thank you so much Tessa for sending me copy of your book. This was such an amazing read!
This was such a emotional, beautiful story! After a tragic car accident, Emilia suffers memory loss. Her mind resets every night and she wakes up only remembering her life up until the car accident. Despite the limitations her memory loss causes, she works hard and tries to make the most of her new life- even if it’s one step forward, ten steps back most days. Alongside her, Eric, her best friend since before the accident, tries to let her use free will to choose what she wants in life, even if that isn’t him. They’ve been on again, off again for a while because each night instead of writing the memories of their day and their feelings down, Emilia chooses to forget it. She doesn’t think that Eric deserves the burden of taking care of her, reminding her of things she’s been told over and over, and doesn’t believe she could be a wife or mom with her limitations. This story has so much that you can take from it, but most of all I think it would be to trust your mind and body, don’t be afraid to take that leap, and to live one day at a time 💗
Eric is a 5 star book boyfriend. His patience and dedication to Emilia is undeniably inspiring. Really off the scale. I cant imagine having to love someone who would forget you every damn day. I also get to see how Emilia struggle with her condition brought about by her accident and it is so heartbreaking and would make you proud of how she face it at the same time
I came across this book for free on Amazon kindle and I guess a debut novel from this author and I am not regretting getting this book. This is also written in 3rd person POV which I am not a fan of but I didn’t mind it when i was reading this.
“a love comprised of a million small moments over the years that her brain had forgotten and her heart had remembered” …oh eric shaffer TAKE ME AWAY. I’m obsessed with Tessa’s writing. I love how her books always make you feel immediately connected to the main character, and that’s ironically the only reason this isn’t getting 5 stars from me. The feeling of confusion from Emilia’s day to day struggle keeps you helpless as a reader. You get to put the pieces together slowly, she doesn’t. It makes you want to scream “Stop it!” Eric makes it all worth it for the reader AND Emilia. I love the side characters, too. I read a couple pages every day in-between books or when I had a couple minutes to spare, and then rushed the second half in an hour. So worth it. A little angsty, but not torturous. Still a light read. DEFINITELY recommend! Ms. Alexandria is also a lovely person, definitely made me a fan for life
I came to this author via her excellently written fanfiction pieces, so I decided to support her by buying her real book. And am I glad I did! What a lovely, lovely story. The characters are amazingly written, the premise is beautiful and it was such a joy to read. Go give this one a chance - it’s absolutely worth your money and your time!
I've known this author for a long time on AO3 - she's one of my favorite fic writers. So I immediately picked her original novel up since it's on KU.
She writes fanfics with really unique premises. Her stories are often written as mysteries: a character is put through unusual circumstances, falls in love, learns a lot about themselves and grows as a person. The character often needs to uncover a secret, usually a truth about themselves or their lives that they don't want to face. The original fic of this novel has been taken down, but I still remember most of the story. It was really interesting to read this as an original novel.
In this novel, Emilia gets into an accident and is unable to make long-term memories. The reader learns about her life alongside her. The prologue tells of the accident and the first chapter starts two years after the accident. You're as disoriented as she is as she tries to find out what happened. She has an extensive note taking system to remember things (reminded me of the movie Memento). Her memories basically become external to her instead of being inside her head. I'm not familiar with amnesia but I saw some reviews referring to that. As the chapters progress, Emilia doesn't remember her days, but the reader does. I am amazed at how Emilia grows as a person and character despite not remembering her past, and the way her relationships evolve. It was masterfully written. I won't spoil the mystery, but in the end she figures out what she was hiding from herself and what everyone else was hiding from her, and chooses to love and be happy in a very courageous leap of faith.
The story also led me to reflect on disability. Emilia has a loving and supportive social group and she's able to unconditionally trust all of them to look out for her and to never take advantage of her extremely vulnerable position. She herself struggles a lot with her disability and has very harsh thoughts about herself and how she's like a burden. It reminded me of an article I read about people's different capacities for independence (the article used depression as an example), where some people depend on others to live, and how society views independence and dependence.
Anyway, this is a good story. It's a well-written character-driven romance with very sweet and poignant moments.
Felt the need to pick this one from my shelves after reading The Many Lives of Serena Page, which I absolutely loved (I had bought this book a while ago but it was not on my immediate TBR at the time).
I absolutely loved this story. I see people commenting about 50 First Dates, a movie I love, but this book does not have the same vibes. There's humor at times, but Tessa is a master of portraying deep emotions. I cried twice within the first hundred pages, then got used to the emotional roller-coaster.
This journey Emilia has to take on is a heartbreaking one: when your mind resets every night, it's hard to imagine any happy future and give life any sort of chance. I felt deeply for her and my heart ached at her internal conflict, which was so well written. That aside, Emilia is very brave and her quest was so inspiring.
Eric is the best and I now blame Tessa for my high standards in men. His pain throughout the book was hard to read. The amount of faith he has in Em's ability to subconsciously remember things and how he works towards giving her the best life possible is so beautiful.
The other characters were also so loveable and supportive. This not only is an amazing romance but also a great story about friendship and found family.
This is a HEA. Maybe not the one I expected but the best one I could have hoped for with how realistic it was and how many emotions I felt at once.
Within the first chapters, I really got the vibe of 50 First Dates and was curious how this book would be different and be able to hold my attention. Let me tell you, I was hooked. I really enjoyed this book. Also, there was a little spice but it was well written and appropriate.
While there are similarities with other books that try to tackle this topic (amnesia for a generalized topic) One Day at a Time really stands out for me. Muscle Memory is a fabulous thing! The love story is amazing. So well written and not just "they fell in love" copy stamp. Emilia and Eric are a couple that others should strive to be. Their trust for one another allows them the happiness that they find.
I will recommend this book to all who love a good love story who want a bit of angst tossed in.
Like one of the other reviewers, I tend not to finish books that I don't enjoy - and I finished this one! That is a small miracle, since I generally never bother with contemporary romances - but I decided to read it based on conversations with one of the two "guest editors" that the author had used.
The underlying concept interested me (I had never heard of 50 First Dates till I was describing this book to a friend, so it was a novel idea to me). It's very readable and I appreciated some well-crafted vignettes and observations. Like most romances, there are too many tears brushed from cheeks, blushes, and faces hidden in hands for my taste, but maybe I'm just a curmudgeon. After all, I DID finish it, enjoyed much of it, and would recommend it to anyone who appreciates the genre. Were I one of them, I'd probably have given it 5 stars.
So much contemporary romance feels like a superficial examination of a couple who manage to fall in love as the universe conspires to make it all happen. This is a story of two people for whom things have gone wrong, yet who make a series of difficult choices to be together anyway. It is a celebration not just of love, but of the power of personal will and the ability to find happiness in difficult circumstances. Beyond the love story, there is a powerful message about the power of choice. A beautiful story
If I could give more than 5 stars for this, I would! If you liked the movie “50 First Dates,” this is deeper and more profound than that. What do you think your life would be like if you could only remember the day you were in and every day when you woke up the bookmark in your brain took you back to the day of the accident that damaged your memory? This story will show you how we can somehow get through the hardest things and love really is what carries us through. ❤️
Based on the description I expected a "50 first dates" retelling but it was so much more. A lesson in following your heart! The heart remembers even if the brain does not! ♥️
You will dislike the FMC a few times. For someone who feels she has so little control she sure feels the need to make decisions for others. But if you take a step back, would you really feel differently in her situation?
Considering this is based in a very repetitive setting, the story did not feel repetitive and I was hooked through to the end. I will definitely recommend to others!
So considering this was a Harry/Hermione fanfic, its very much leaning into the friends to lovers trope. The idea that her mind resets every night is interesting but eventho Eric claims he doesnt care about having the same conversations over and over, I got bored of them at some point. Emilias dilemma of wanting to be with Eric but not wanting to tie him down to her condition made me so annoyed. Felt like the miscommunication turned up to the max, since they never actually talked about it until ~60%. All in all it was very much a rollercoaster.

Emilia was in a car accident and was left brain damaged. She has amnesia. The book gives you a peek into what it is like to forget everything and everyone (even the ones you love) over and over again everyday! What is it like to be in love with someone and not know it? What is it like for the person who loves you? Both a sad but triumphant story! Don’t miss out!
I wanted to read this book because this author wrote one of my favorite fanfictions, but when I looked at it, I was a little disappointed because I thought who needs another 50 first dates. But!! this book was really different and thought-provoking and emotional, and I really enjoyed the journey of the characters! I wish it had a bigger audience. I think it was a really great book.
SO CUTE & so heartbreaking in the best way. Eric has the patience and love of a god damn saint!!! He was one of the sweetest mmc’s i have ever read! I had some mixed feelings about Emilia, but not entirely her fault. At the “10 years later” point, I SOBBED! it was just so heartwarming and wholesome.
An insightfully compelling story suggests that with the help of loyal friendships and a dedicated relationship of fervent love, unwavering compassion, empathy, understanding, and patience, seemingly hopeless circumstances can be cheerfully and successfully attainable!
I finished this book in less than a day and absolutely loved it. I started the book thinking it was not going to go well because of the concept but the male lead is written incredibly and makes for a great story and precious interactions.
I wanted to love this I feel like this book could have utilized flashbacks or a dual timeline in parts. It was a little too long for me for how repetitive it became. I wanted to see more of what made fall in love rather just be told over and over that they were.
Such a plot!!! Very different story line. Can’t imagine being in the situation Emilia was. Kept me interested right up to the end. Having someone like Eric, so patient, was unbelievable. Thoroughly enjoyed this unusual book.
Awesome character development, story line was well written, think 50 first dates meets your favorite love story. Light heated story about heavy stuff. Makes you think about your life and the things you take for granted!
Reminds me of the movie "Fifty First Dates". I really enjoyed reading it and could imagine this happening to someone in real life. Makes me thankful for the memories I can retain on a daily basis.
This was really good. I was only mildly annoyed by the FMC but it was totally valid for her to be acting that way. The whole story was sweet and I really enjoyed it.
More people should be talking about this book! You have to suspend reality slightly when you’re reading this so if you can do that, you are in for a TREAT. So romantic. Swoon.
