A Castle of Sand

Rate this book
What Sofia has with Derek feels like a sandcastle; temporary and something that the waves of life and time will soon ruin...

Since the return of Gregor Novak, the island has turned several shades darker. His hatred toward Sofia and thirst for fresh blood lead to a brutal war igniting between father and son.

Meanwhile, the hunters are gaining formidable strength and resources by the day; they know that the safety of The Shade hangs entirely on its ability to remain hidden from them.

And a sinister secret lies in wait for Sofia within the bowls of an Egyptian desert... a secret that threatens to crush her sandcastle much sooner than she could have expected.

4 Sand Castle Stars

A Castle of Sand is book three in the A Shade of Vampire series. This continues Sofia and Derek’s story. Sofia is back in the Shade and you would think all the problems are fixed right? Not so much. Sofia describes her relationship with Derek like a Sand Castle, beautiful but ready to be broken down by a simple tide of water.

Sofia and Derek struggle a lot in this book. Yes, it was happy and good times in the beginning but as more problems arise the couple find it hard to be together. Gregor, Derek’s evil father is back in the picture and he makes no hesitation in showing how much he dislikes Sofia. Derek is a bit weaker in this book, because his father is king, Derek finds it hard to stand up to his dad and do what is right.

Sofia stands up more towards Derek as she is voices her opinion on how humans should be treated. I’m kind of on the fence with Sofia. At times I liked her and at times I just wanted her to be quiet and just be with Derek. I felt like with her coming back to the Shade she should accept some of the ways that come with it, but I do love a strong Heroine so you understand my conflict.

I’m not a fan of the main characters struggling but I do love tension because it keeps the storyline going. I just hope with the next book Sofia and Derek can find some middle ground. I do like that even though they have problems, Sofia moved her relationship with Derek in a forward direction. I didn’t see that coming and I enjoyed that a lot. I will still continue with the series.

Reading A Shade of Vampire book series is a little like agreeing to become someone’s girl or boyfriend—enthralled by the promise of adventures to come, only to become disenchanted over time—wanting the sparkle, but lamenting that it’s harder to find.

I’m not quite ready to break up, but the worry in my gut warns of the possibility.

Looking at my go-to checkmarks for an exceptional read, here is why book 3 (A CASTLE OF SAND) earned three stars.

PLOT: This is the book’s saving grace: Human (Sofia) is in love with the most powerful vampire (Derek). Meanwhile, Derek’s brother (Lucas) wants Sofia for himself, as does the second most-powerful vampire (Borys). And of course, Lucas and Borys want Derek dead to get what they want! All the players, including vampire hunters the likes of Sofia’s father and her bff Ben, converge for a battle. And there’s always that lingering question: will Sofia be turned vampire?

CHARACTERS: Opportunities to delve into each character’s weaknesses and growth are often rushed over; therefore, sometimes transformations are unbelievable. Here are two examples:

Ben (Sofia’s vampire-hunter bff) hates Derek until suddenly, he doesn’t. Ben says:

"I looked straight at her, surprised that I meant every word when I said, “If you’re on his side (Derek’s), Sofia, then so am I.”

Have to admit: I was surprised right along with Ben!!!

Claudia (a vampire who abused human Ben) hates Ben until she suddenly doesn’t. She claims it is because she finally realizes she loves a vampire named Yuri. Ben presses her about her change toward him, as well as what she wants from him. Claudia answers:

“I don’t know what I want. I still want to taste you, but I want Yuri…I want Yuri more than anything.”

The makings of great characters are there, but I’m “told” of the transformation instead of seeing, feeling, and understanding it myself.

WRITING: There is a promise of great craft, but I’m always feeling rushed, like some deadline might have prevented more meticulous attention to the prose. Here’s what I mean: Derek is the most powerful vampire in his 500 years. He kills people/vampires by ripping out their hearts and Sofia has witnessed this gruesome act and loves him anyway. Not surprising he can break through chains, right? The prose from Derek’s voice…

Adrenaline rushed through my entire body, giving me the strength I needed to pull away my restraints. Sofia looked shocked as the chains broke. She knew I was strong, but she’d never seen me do anything beyond ripping out a heart or two. I checked on her. Have I gone too far?

Is it believable to be that concerned about Sofia’s reaction to breaking chains when he pulls hearts out like picking an apple off a tree?

TENSION: Tension keeps me reading forward. My heart still wants to know if Derek and Sofia are going to overcome barriers and realize their happily-ever-after!

LOVE: See the tension category!

TWISTS/SURPRISES: There is a twist, but one of the characters takes the surprise away from the reader by dropping a HUGE hint…twice. I literally said, “Thanks a lot!” So in the end, maybe Sofia and Derek become surprised, but not me...the reader!!!

HUMOR/CLEVERNESS: I can live without a slam-dunk within this checkmark.

I’ve already purchased the first seven books in this series, so I’ll move on to book 4, hoping...HOPING the break-up will be averted!!! Because Bella Forrest does a fantastic job getting readers to want to sink their teeth into her series. I just don’t want the sweetness to turn sour!!!

This book sucked me and then left me wanting more.

Sandcastles always fall........ with each book the story just keeps getting better and better. The author keeps you on your toes with all the twists and turns and I love it. Just when you think the story couldnt get any better.... it freaking does. Ive said it once and I'll say it 100 more times, I love blood and guts in my vampire books and movies. Bella doesnt settle on the gory details and my imagination runs wild picturing hearts being ripped out. AWESOME!!!!!!!

So many secrets were revealed in this book and I dont know how Sofia was able to hold it all together. She is so loving and hard core at the same time. She doesnt let Derek walk all over her even though he could easily kill her. With all the drama that surrounds them it doesnt diminish their love for one another. Everyone else doubts that they can really be in love with one another and b/c of that Derek is hell bent on proving his love to Sofia and everyone else. He decides that he is going to pursue her and show her that is is worthy and not treat her like he has other woman that has gone to bed with him.

With Derek's father Gregor back at the Shade and Sofia's father being in the picture and being a Hunter they have more obstacles to face in order for the prophecy to be fulfilled. Lucas is still triflin as ever, Claudia starts out evil but later has a change of heart as well as Ben. I still dont understand what caused her to change and I still dont trust her. Hopefully I will be able to trust her more in the next book A Shadow of Light. Come to find out there ill be 2 more books coming out (5 total). Once again I will have to be patient and wait for the next installment to get more of Derek and Sofia. I need more of The Shade, oh and that darn ending.......... I could scream!!! I have had dreams about this book since I started reading it. I am addicted to the Shade almost as much as Sofia. LOL!

Kindle Unlimited series

We've got a heroine here who is 100% perfect which makes for an impressively boring character and how this series has been stretched out for 15 books is beyond my wildest dreams. We're talking a halo with a little arrow labelled 'I'm Incredible'. This adds up to a character that lacks any credibility. I have to also point out that this YA read is somewhat immature and that's saying something from a reader who enjoys YA novels.

The tale isn't too bad if you can bypass Little Miss Perfect and her acolytes.

Wow, I feel like I need to catch my breath. This book is a whirlwind of emotion and action. I gave the first two books 5 stars as well, but, this one is the best of the three. I absolutely love the way the characters have all developed in this book. Ben has finally gotten past his need for revenge and finally accepts the role he is to play in Sofia's life. Then, there is Sofia and Derek. The love and respect they have for one another grows throughout the book. And as individuals they each really come into their own. Derek is becoming a fair and humane leader and is willing to sacrifice anything for the woman he loves. And Sofia is the glue that holds everyone together. She is who gives Derek strength. She is who the human population of Shade is coming to look to for guidance. She and Derek are strongest when they are together, weakest when they are apart. In my opinion, there are so many parallels that can be drawn here between the divisions between the vampire and human populations of The Shade and between racial and social divisions of our time. And, how just one person can stand up and get people to listen, and make a difference. Whether Bella Forrest intended her book to make us think or not, I thank her for it. I simply cannot wait for the next book.

BELLA FORREST HAS DONE IT AGAIN and has given us a book that clearly will keep you on the edge of your seat. So much action and suspense, with the many twists and turns to keep your head spinning. I absolutely love how this series is panning out and the story just gets more riveting and exciting as we read along. And, just when you think you have all things figured out, Bella throws a curve ball and has you stumped as to what to expect next. Keeps me definitely wanting more and hanging for the next instalment.

Derek and Sofia have so much going for them, but are faced with so many challenges along the way, in order to be together. With hunters forever out to get them, vampires wanting to be rid of Sofia and the constant threat of the villainous and evil King, Derek's Father, Gregor Novak, you would think that they were being put through the ringer and back. And they most definitely were. Anytime we found Sofia and Derek having a moments peace together and trying to work through their relationship something or someone would get in their way. My heart went out for the them and I couldn't stand the pressures they were going through. Not only from outside forces, but also within themselves i.e. struggling to comes to terms with how they were going to be together as human and vampire. So many questions were brought to mind while reading this and you feel for both Derek and Sofia. All that mattered was that they loved each other more than anything in the world and would do anything for one another, including laying their own lives, yet there was this constant threat of immortality standing in their way. I'm really nervous and eager at the same time to find out how this will unravel itself within the series. Although, in saying that, I really love how these challenges and pressures have strengthened them in both their resolve and their love for one another. These two would stop at nothing to do what's right for everyone, and think of others before themselves. They are a fierce and mighty couple to contend with and there were a plenty of enemies who wanted to bring them down. I swear, I think they have more villains out to get them then any other series out there and what's even more astounding is the fact, that most of them are out to get Sofia in one way or form. She really is the key to all the mysterious within this series and I am desperate to find out all her secrets, and I think Sofia is too.

A Castle of Sand will leave you gripping and wanting so much more and if the ending hasn't got you internally saying whoa then I don't know what you are reading. I can't wait to see what Bella brings to the table in the next book but I am seriously in love with this series and highly recommend that you all take a chance and go for it. Read this series. Bella Forrest, thank you so much for providing me with an ARC to read and for writing such an enticing and a "sink your teeth into" series that has you craving for more.

....

A Castle of Sand was interesting and had a great start. I like getting to see Sofia and Derek's relationship grow. I also liked getting to know more about Ben and the hunters. The thing's I didn't like were Claudia, Sofia's mother, or that other vampire coven. God, they were crazy. Oh, and the King - Derek's dad. I hated him so freaking much.

The one thing I don't get is why everyone is obsessed with Sofia. Why does every guy need or want her. I just don't get it but oh well. I liked Derek and Sofia, but again.. it's like a common theme. They claim their love and then somehow Sofia get's kidnapped or something. Or something else.

I liked how she sort of accepted his marriage proposal.. but then there's some twists and turns. I wonder what she's going to do now that they are with her dad and the other hunters. I wonder what's going to happen to her mother and claudia. I also really have some questions about her being immune and shit. so many questions...

Just when I think Bella Forrest has done her worst at tearing my heart out and putting my nerves on edge, she goes and ups the ante on me! A Castle of Sand brings us right into the heart of the action, suspense, and drama that is leading The Shade toward its fate, with Sofia and Derek taking center stage as the humans and vampires attempt to secure their place in this future. The king’s return threw one roadblock after another into the plans, though, and the hits just kept coming for prince Novak now that his father was in the mix. Between the king’s vile methods of laying down the laws, the constant threat from either hunters or enemy vampires, the uncertainty of The Shade’s future, and the stress of being together as a human and a vampire while standing up for what they believed in, Derek and Sofia were on an incredibly rocky path. I was cringing and trying to calm my racing heart time after time as they pushed through the challenges they faced!

It really seemed like the world was out to get Derek this time around, he just couldn’t catch a break and even Sofia had to take an opposing position when it came to the humans at The Shade. My heart broke for both of them as more and more it looked as if they were fighting a losing battle to be together, and trust me when I say the villains this time around WILL make you want to scream! And with the Maslens, the hunters, and Gregor Novak all lined up for a fight, there were plenty to want to tear into!

We knew the huge revelation at the end of book 2 was going to be a key factor in Sofia’s life, and I was dreading the moment Borys and Ingrid Maslen came back into the story. With some plot twists that made my stomach drop, we see just how cold both of them can be, and Sofia’s strength and determination were really put to the test. We don’t come out unscathed when this battle comes to a close, but with some sad goodbyes things moved on and lines were drawn for the next fight, which is sure to be much more challenging for both sides.

This series continues to draw me in, and Bella Forrest never ceases to impress with her creativity and the beauty of her writing. Once again, I loved diving back into Sofia and Derek’s story, and I’m left wishing I didn’t have such a long wait for more!

Quotes:

What I had with Derek felt like a sandcastle. I was aware that it was temporary, that the waves of life and time would soon ruin it, but it was to beautiful, too precious to me to just let go of. ~Sofia, p. 5

Sofia frowned as my eyes bore into hers. She knew--like she always did when it came to me--that what I was saying wasn't to be taken lightly. Her grip enveloped mine.
"It's like they're communicating through Bluetooth or something..." Ashley muttered under her breath. ~Derek, p. 25

After everything he'd done for me and all the times he stood up for me and fought for me, that was the first time it really sank into me just how much Derek Novak truly loved me. I felt like I'd given up everything for him. I realized that he was willing to do the same for me if he needed to. ~Sofia, p. 131

I could feel his anger. He didn't like my defiance. He didn't like that I was holding my head up. He wanted me to whimper and beg. He wanted me to cry. I'd already done that and I was determined to no longer give him this satisfaction. ~Sofia, p. 173

DNF third book at 30%. My opinion.

I really wanted to like this series. It had all the components I usually love in my stories...hot alpha vampire, innocent but strong heroine who comes from a family with secrets, drama, and the steam, but it failed me. I think it is in the execution. Something was missing for me and I am not sure what. After a while the story was still continuing, but the characters were just there almost like they were going through the motions they are supposed to go through. As I was reading I was thinking..."blah, blah, blah...skim, skim, skim."

Did not work for me.

It’s me! Back again for more punishment! Actually, people seem to be thinking my thorough reviews are helpful, so who am I to stop now?

Before I get into the book itself, I first have to say the titles of these books are like George RR Martin’s book title’s silly cousins. In GRRM’s books, you get an idea of what’s going on. “A Game of Thrones”: sounds like politics, and it was. “A Clash of Kings”: sounds like fighting, and it was. “A Dance With Dragons”: … ok, so he dropped the ball on that one, but the other four were pretty spot on, I think. For these books, however… well, maybe “shade” is the multiple noun of vampire? You know, like a murder of crows? A shade of vampires? (Although I think the multiple most people use is “kiss”, which was made popular in the Anita Blake books.) The second one… uhm… I guess it could be referring to something being colored in blood? Maybe? The third one, now, uuuuhmmm.... Although a sand castle was referred to in the books before as being something “beautiful but temporary”, so I think it’s a throwback, but really… if you asked someone what a book called “A Castle of Sand” was about they wouldn’t even dream to answer vampires. Wouldn’t even cross their minds.

The second thing I want to point out is that in the book description, it says “A sinister secret lies in wait for Sophia in the bowls of Egypt….” The bowls. Really. I think it was supposed to be “bowels”, although that would infer Egypt’s rear end, which may be more accurate, really. When I think of the Bowls of Egypt, I think of ubiquitous clay bowls scattered across all the dunes of the Sahara, sitting there forlornly.

However, it was pointed out to me by my husband is that “bowl” can also be used in a geographic sense, where it’s a basin with no outlet for water. So now it behooves me to try and figure out if it was used correctly, or if it was supposed to be bowels and the spellcheck missed it. Perhaps the story will tell us! Let’s find out!

2% -- Hey, starts out with bloodshed. It’s already looking up from the rest of the series. Although reading a bit further in, I’m … sadly disappointed it’s not Derek dying. Sofia is being kept from her beloved by her father, oh boo hoo! Which Derek seems to be on a mass murder spree and her dad is telling people to get her out of there, so… which is better?

3% -- UGH is this prologue going to end with “Two weeks earlier” and then launch into the book? I HATE that device! It never adds anything! Also (boy I can tell this is going to be a long review), “Kneeling over me, he held my waist with one hand and ran his palm from my forehead to my mouth.” WAT. That’s it. Derek will now be played by John Travolta in Face-Off for me.

4% -- Really? Sandcastle metaphor is what you’re going with? No plucked flowers wilting and dying? You could make it roses? Roses? Wouldn’t that be better?

5% -- Not that I mind personally, but… isn’t that really suggestive for a YA book?

6% -- WHY THANK YOU FOR EXPOSITIONING FOR US, DEREK! Yes, that had to be in all caps.

7% -- “No, really, HOW WERE THE CARS BROUGHT TO THE ISLAND?!” Jeez, Derek, does it really matter? Any way you slice it, it was expensive.

8% -- “Do you want to become a vampire?” “YES, where do I sign up?!?” Predictably, Sofia is ‘terrified’ of it. Seems like being a vampire is just like being alive, except you drink blood instead of eat burgers. Fair trade for me.

9% -- Yay, rapekisses! *checks* Jeez, I’m really only 9% in? Sigh.

10% -- Yeah, but how come we don’t ever see Derek being reasonable and friendly with the other human slaves? We only see him when he’s being a dick to them. Hello, river of DENIAL?

13% -- Impending death for Sofia, or turning her into a vampire, and you’re going to stop everything for a birthday party, Derek? Really? Really? Prince of the vampires and master-at-arms for them… party planner must just be something else to add to his resume to give him a little extra somethin’-somethin’.

14% -- Boo, we have Ben’s POV again. Also, THANK YOU FOR THE EXTRA EXPOSITION, BEN!

15% -- Getting your ex-girlfriend back is just as good of a goal as ridding the world of all hungry blood-sucking fiends. You’re darn skippy it is, Ben.

16% -- Derek had a six room house built for Sofia in the Catacombs, with two guest rooms and a separate dining room and kitchen… in a week. In extra hilarity, he forgot the bathrooms. That actually makes me really happy there, and I have to admit I laughed out loud. He’s five hundred years old... when was the last time he had to USE a toilet? Over 500 years ago! Of COURSE he forgot the bathrooms!

Still, houses aren’t built and painted and wallpapered and furnished in a week. Not unless you have the Flash working on it.

Aaah… refurbished quarters. So not built, just completely redone. Still not happening in a week. I swear there must be a Lowe’s on this island though.

17% -- I wonder if all of the vampires are turned when they are 18, are they all locked into the bad decision making that teenagers are known for for… forever? That would make this book make a lot of sense. And… OH NO, Sam was in his 20s when he was turned! There’s NO WAY he would like a teenaged girl! NEVER.

18% -- She’s upset because he’s making her move out… IT’S THE END OF THE WORLD!!! Actually, he doesn’t really give a good reason, but she’s having a complete meltdown.

19% -- Haaaa… Daddy dearest calls her jumpy one second, then a “firebrand” the next. Anyone else think of Mexican jumping beans on fire? Anyone? Just me? Ok.

Also, Derek doesn’t know how weddings are done. I r amused.

20% -- Personal pet peeve… you don’t call the Sahara “the Sahara Desert”... it’s just the Sahara. Sahara means desert, derp.

Also, “Earth, water, fire, wind, HEART! By your five powers combined I AM CAPTAIN PLANET!” Elements been done to death, dear.

… also also… (there’s a lot wrong with this section evidently) I have a way bigger problem with the Maslens renovating ancient Egyptian tombs for modern convenience than I did with the mysterious contractors and/or Wal-Mart on the mysteriously mysterious redwood island. First, most tombs aren’t that big. Some are.. but those are historic and national landmarks. Did the government of Egypt let you do that?! Do they have tour groups go through? Second, the tombs don’t go that deep, and why in the heck would you want a glass elevator underground? To how many levels? This is bigger than the treehouses… did they get a mining crew in there to extract the limestone and sandstone and yet somehow not destroy the tombs? Where’s the electricity coming from? Human generators like we surmised before? Are there power lines going out there? And what about the water… seriously, it’s a desert. Do you have any idea how much pipes would have to be laid through bedrock… wait, it’s at the “Oasis”... which is even more ridiculous. Trust me, every single oasis in the Sahara is known because water is really darn precious in the desert. Unless they give me some stupid vampire super power secret thing to explain all this, I might have to throw up my hands in disgust and put this book down.

21% -- She slurs her words, so she’s “demented”. Not drunk, “demented”.

22% -- Wow, Lucas sounds offended like a vampire is talking about a human like a piece of luggage. Uh, that’s what they are to vampires? That and walking steaks?

Also, hehe, “I sneaked into her room”. Correct tense use here is “I snuck into her room.”

23% -- Let’s just hit the sandcastle metaphor a LITTLE harder there. I think there’s someone in Bangladesh who hasn’t gotten it yet.

24% -- Why, exactly, can’t she marry him? Because he’ll live forever and she won’t. OH BOO FREAKING HOO. Someone’s always gotta die first. Just sayin’.

25% -- Haha, someone’s been watching too many action movies. Targets don’t “smoke” after you shoot them. Gun barrel might, but targets? Not unless you put something flammable there, or maybe something powdery. And it’s not just a wisp of smoke… oh no no, not in this book. Here it “billows” out. Hey, maybe he shot a water heater or steam engine? Tea kettle?

They were using “ultraviolet-ray bullets”. BULLETS MADE OF LIGHT! Pew! Pew! Lasers!

26% -- “Cat-like, her eyes darted from one side of the roof to the other.” Just… let that sink in.

27% -- Pardon me while I puke into my Sue bucket.

32% -- Lucas wants to jump up and hug people. Wow, some villain there. Does he pet puppies too? Sing songs? Poot rainbows out his rear?

And then he hits on her by saying, “You’re looking like a total babe, Natalie….” BWHAHAHAHAH! Supa smooth Lucas!

35% -- Yeah, this whole not doing it until they’re married is fake, artificial, stunted, unrealistic… pick your word, folks. It just doesn’t make any sense.

What is with all of these flashbacks?!

37% -- What sway do you have, Derek? You were asleep for 400 years! I think I’d side with the big mean vampire who’s been around and I KNOW not to mess with in this case! Jeez Louise.

38% -- Ugh… I’d forgotten about the prophecy.

39% -- You know, I think I’ve come across the major problem in this book… there’s no threat, no teeth. Yeah, yeah, Mary Sue story and all that… but even Sues like fight people, and sometimes they get beat up so they can angst over it, then win in the end. Everyone’s just kissing Derek’s butt and he’s the bestest fastest bestest vampire ever… and it’s just dull. It’s boring. People rate this book five stars? Why? WHHHYYYYYYY?!?

41% -- Uh, no Ben. You didn’t need to fool Sophia. You really are that much of a callous ass. Just sayin’.

But it was said in another book that they had cellphones! Why have cell phones if the singles don’t leave the damn island?!?!?

42% -- If they’re so darn organized, why don’t they just have every human donate a pint of blood once a month or something? There’s only ten thousand of them living there. PROBLEM SOLVED! *drops mic and walks off*

44% -- Faaaaakke aaaaannnggsstt.

Also, Sophia tries to calm Derek down because OH NOES she’s spending time with ANOTHER MAN. Then… this: “...before pushing me away again. Within a couple of seconds, he was kneeling over me, straddling my hips…” The prose did NOT say Sophia got knocked down, soooo… is Derek just like hovering over her or something?

47% -- I like Claudia. Can’t the book be about her?

Also, HOLY POV CHANGE, BATMAN! Heh, we get Claudia’s POV now…

48% -- Ugh, and then my hopes are dashed of having a real vampire around as even Claudia is in LURV with someone. Claudia, girlfriend, if being with him meant “constantly disappointing him by being [a prostitute with a broken, twisted mind]” then he don’t deserve you, girlfriend! Go crazy evil on his rear! STOP CARING ABOUT PEOPLE’S APPROVAL, VILLAINS!

51% -- OMG, Sweet Valley High books are more plot driven than these things. What I would give right now to be reading about blue-green eyes and lavaliers.

YES, SOPHIA IS THE SPECIALEST EVER, can we please have the characters stop talking about her now? Please? Pretty please? With sugar and vajayjay sparkles on top?

54% -- Yes, please Gregor. Whip Sophia. Throw Derek in jail. Be a real vampire. Yes… YES!

55% -- DRAMATIC REVEAL… falls flat. Whoopsie!

56% -- So, instead of whipping Sophia, Derek volunteers to take on her punishment because of VAMPIRE LAW… do they have vampire lawyers then? Vampire judges? Law & Order: The Shade? (I mean, there’s a Law & Order for everything else, so why not?)

62% -- Yes, Sophia is just a prize to be “kept”, Ben.

63% -- Alright… let me get this straight. Derek and some other vamps got whipped for the humans for plotting a revolt… and then they plan another revolt for the next day. *sigh* People are not learning.

64% -- And then Derek just walks in and takes control over the Shade. No fight, no muss, no fuss. Just declares it so, and it’s so. Wow, awesome confrontation. I was so riveted.

65% -- Uh… fortresses can fall to water damage, Sophia. Grand Canyon? Done by water erosion. Yeah, it takes a long time, but still!

Also, Derek the brilliant tactician keeps his father around without imprisoning him, leaving him to freely plan how he’s gonna take his throne back. Awesome plan!

66% -- ………….. JUST NOW Sophia thinks of blood banks? Really? They have televisions and indoor plumbing and masons and a Wal-Mart and cellphones… and just NOW someone comes up with a plan to “tap into the world’s blood banks”. Make your own, idiots! Just have it be mandatory that every healthy human give one pint of blood a month… that would be, at worst, probably 5,000 pints of blood! Jeez!

67% -- OH MY GOSH THIS FAUX TENSION IS DRIVING ME CRAZY! It’s not even tense… we know they’re going to be together. Why all of this?

68% -- This prose is making me want to stab my eyes out. These are the two most insecure twits in the entire universe!

69% -- Oh my gosh! Derek eavesdrops on Ben and Sophia because he flat out doesn’t trust her with Ben. I would say it the other way around, but then it takes away any power of choice Sophia has. (WOMEN AREN’T A PRIZE OR AN OBJECT TO BE WON, Y’ALL! Please know that.)

70% -- And all of this is because Lucas still wants Sophia. Of course. Is her vajayjay made of the Holy Grail? Is the Ark of the Covenant stuck up her rear? What?

71% -- WHAT did she accomplish? Preventing the culling, ok, I’ll give her that one. But what else? I’ll tell you what else she did: she angsted about Derek, refused to marry him, then gave in after he became a jealous maniac by just seeing her with another man. Oh, and then dressed up pretty for him. THAT’S SO MUCH, GAIZ!

72% -- Great, now Sophia’s having Vivienne’s flashbacks, not just her own.

74% -- Yay, Claudia! FINISH HIM!

75% -- Transitions are hard, so we’ll just have a few sentences telling us Sophia’s now at the Oasis.

76% -- All this threat and no follow-through, tsk tsk. You silly villains, this is why you always lose!

77% -- “He clawed through my thighs.” You’d be bleeding a liiiittle bit more than just “trickling” blood then, my dear.

79% -- Yes, walk into the trap and die, Derek. I’m almost done… I keep telling myself that… I’m almost done.

81% -- “You’re the immune, Sophia. I can’t help but want you.” What does that even mean?!?

83% -- Yes, slap him in the face, Claudia! Stop pining for a lost love like a twit! Be a villain!

84% -- I’m really over this “you soiled her before the wedding” stuff. And hello! She is not a possession!

87% -- Derek is unrecognizable! He was just a mass of blood and flesh hanging from chains… one would presume in bags, else it would be very messy.

89% -- Oh yes! He bit her twice and cut her lip! TEH HORROR! (I’m playing that up for humor here, but honestly, a few rapekisses, couple of non-lethal bites, and some taunting is probably at least a little, if not a fair bit, traumatic… but everyone’s playing it up like she’s being raped and tortured.)

Yeah… sexy dresses are terrible, horrible torture.

92% -- Jeez, Louise. How many vampires are going to pin her against a wall in five minutes times? INFINITY NUMBER!

93% -- OHO, I see why Ben suddenly stopped being a d-bag… he was going to be killed off this book.

95% -- *bangs head against desk* This is the book that never ends!

96% -- So she’s immune to being turned into a vampire… that actually sucks for a super power. I’d much rather be a vampire.

DONE! Finally done! It took me months to read this, the text was so painful! MONTHS. I used it as a punishment for when I didn't do enough house chores. "Forgot to vacuum today, damn, three chapters of Castle of Sand it is." It's not even the boring overly urple prose, the cardboard characters, the lack of a real cohesive and interesting plot... it's the sexism. Yes, that's right... the sexism. I don't care if it's a female protagonist. She doesn't DO ANYTHING! Instead, she exists as a prize for Derek, for Ben, for Gregor, for Lucas, and hell, even for her father! It's stupidly ridiculous, and it's insulting.

This is the third review I've done of one of her books, and I just can't face another. I can't do it. CAN'T DO IT. Avoid this book like the plague. AVOID AVOID AVOID! DANGER, WILL ROBINSON, DANGER! *robot flailing arms*

SO much happened in this book and I don’t know where to start; Derek annoyed me for a good chuck of the first half, he didn’t seem to be trying very hard to find a solution to the blood shortage & the whole time he wasn’t Sofia was in danger, I didn’t understand, how much more motivation did he need?

I really enjoyed reading Ben’s story, seeing him wake up and grow up was satisfying but also just tragic, it’s easy to forget he’s just this teenage guy who got dragged into this whole mess & ended up getting broken.

My only complaint, which is also not a complaint is that all the filler in these stories is missing, there’s no small details, no time taken to travel from one place to another (this is the non-complaint part by the way), everything was moving so fast & so much was happening but on the flip side I felt like some moments that should have held more weight, have more page time, were rushed, my main example of this so the attempted culling, this was a big moment which changed the direction of the book and it seemed to happen in the blink of an eye...

I can totally live with this though, if I sacrifice a little weight here & there to get a fast moving story, that’s still packed with feels & action I’m good with that. There really is no lack of action & plot here, so much happens & is uncovered but at the same time creating more mystery, it just seems to be constantly escalating & I can’t wait for the next one.

Ugh! This book was just released, so now I have to wait forever to get my greedy hands on the next book.

A Castle of Sand, is a little more intense emotionally than the other two books, you can tell it's just going to get darker from here on out in Sophia and Derek's adventures. It already has. This book, has many mixed emotions, and a lot of guilt and sorrow, mixed in with some pride, and most definitely lots of love.

Sophia (human) and Derek (Vampire, also prince of the Shade), couldn't be anymore in love than they are. Except with having Derek's father home, puts a cramp in their relationship, responsibilities that must be met, and inner turmoil on the fact that Sophia is mortal while, Derek is immortal. Sophia during a lot of this book refers to the sandcastle statement Ben made, but with different variations.

Sophia grows stronger in this book, and Derek due to his love for Sophia keeps a grand hold on his humanity and surprises you every step of the way. Sophia was getting a little whiny at some points that I had to just roll my eyes.

But other than the minor irritants I'm still lovin this series, and Bella Forest is still rocking the smooth material out. UGH! How long before the next one is released? lol

I am just a bit further from the half way mark, and although a review is very unusual at this point I just cannot hold back any further. I just cannot "love" this series like anyone else does. Neither can I comprehend why there are 14 books in this series when it could all have been done on 3 or 4 max!

There is not one likable. Everyone is LONGING for someone and no one thinks they are good enough for the person the want to be with or are with.

*gag*

The pointless actions of these characters is just beyond my brain's capacity to comprehend.

Why is it that no one things of just making it mandatory for every human to give a pint of blood every month! Problem solved.

the below link is the perfect review to explain everything I feel with this dumb book!!

When Derek's father Gregor returns he is not too happy. He has learned that his son Derek has fallen for a human woman, making him weak, causing him to make poor choices.

Now that Sophia has returned to Derek, there is nothing he won't do to keep her by his side and no one he won't go up against to keep her safe, even his father. Tension builds in the Shade between father and son and Sophia wonders if Derek and her will make it through.

With the third installment, the author takes into the thick of things and begins to reveal family secrets that I did not see coming. If you have come to like this series, this the installment you must read to understand a little more into the history. Loved it!

Wow!!!! That was awesome!!!!!! What an ending!!! I was so afraid it'd be a killer cliffie that had me beating down a wall. Now it's just got me desperate to start A Shadow of Light. I'm so excited!!! Each book is just better and better! And after reading the first 5 Vampire Academy books and loving them, I'm finding this series better. Crazy concept. But Derek and Sofia have to be like my ultimate top PNR couple. Shit, they've gone through hell and back and their love is unwavering and deep and just so beautiful. But I know there's more hardships waiting to destroy them still. So many obstacles and so much emotional devastation, yet I truly believe they'll overcome it all. And thank Bella for continuously adding their pov's. even a couple other pov's that I didn't care for, it was all necessary.

This journey is far from over. Now that we know who Sofia's parents truly are and their roles, it's just more intense and mind-boggling. But I'm curious to see how it pans out. I really hate her mom and I don't trust her dad. Of course Derek's father is an evil monster. I feel heartbroken for him. I still miss Vivienne and hope shell somehow show back up, alive and well. He needs her, his twin sister. They're the only family members that are good upon all the evil monstrosities. And if Derek ever asked to turn me, I wouldn't hesitate. He's one sexy Vampire King. *dreamy sigh*

I wanna know more about Claudia and hope that she redeems herself in my eyes, cause right now, I don't trust her. I don't care to know about Camilla or Aiden, but they're important to Sofia's existence so I have no choice. I just want my beloved Derek and Sofia to run away from the island to a deserted place where they can be alone and have sex because Jesus Christ, those two deserve it. But I know I won't get my wish, any time soon at least. Now, I hope that in the next book or two, they at least get freakin married already. I want Borys to catch a sliver of sunlight and burst into flames for all the sadistic torture he put Vivienne and Sofia through. God, I hate that son of a bitch.

I want the Hunters and Vampires to work together to take down Gregor and end this civil war...

But like the Prophecy states: Blood will be shed. And plenty of it has proved true. So I suppose that much more will be, as long as it's not Sofia or Derek's, I can sleep peacefully. Ahhhhh. I just love this series, all the action, romance, mystery and fantasy elements. It's definitely one of the best!!!!!

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars

**Please note, book was gifted by author in exchange for an honest review.**

"You shouldn't trust me, Sofia. I can lose my mind and break you any time."

~Derek

Let's talk cover. The color scheme is gorgeous. I'm not sure how I feel about the guy though. Maybe it's because I have the lead character looking very different in my own head.

A Castle of Sand is the third installment of the A Shade of Vampire series by Bella Forrest. Once again, the story came out swinging by foreshadowing what was to come. It was a great set up that, as the reader, I wondered, in the back of my head as I read, when will the other shoe drop? The odds continue to stack against Derek and Sophia and danger is literally around every corner. Their relationship is steadily maturing as the series continues. When I say maturing, I don't mean sex. This isn't quite a YA read and while it isn't a detail oriented erotica, you get the gist, hormones are definitely flying. They matured in how they communicated, how they went from being a couple to one solid, joint force. In the world of make believe, their relationship and the progression of it is very relatable and therefore believable.

Those damn Novak men. By now, you know the deal, love the Prince, hate the passed over Prince and the menacing King. That being said, there's a little something that all three characters possess that strikes intrigue. Dear ol' dad is ruthless and that devious brother...wow. Even the golden boy, Derek, the most fascinating thing about his character is that he is, literally, always teetering on the edge. He isn't quite stable when it comes to keeping his wits about him, remaining "proper". He will flip his lid at the flip of a coin and that alone sends me into a fan girl frenzied!

A Castle of Sand was a coming of age for both Sophia and Derek. No longer just the star crossed lovers, they are finding themselves, their individual strength and their greater purpose. Sophia emerged as a brave, determined young woman and while Derek may be forever 18, he is no child. He is forced to draw his line in the sand and stands strong with his choices, willing to sacrifice everything that he is for whom he loves. This too cued additional fan girling.

Last but not least, there were tears. As Vivienne warned, blood was indeed shed. Quite a bit actually. This isn't just a teen sappy romance, it's also has a balls to the wall, catch me if you can type of feel to it. It's action packed with many twists and turns and surprises that left my jaw on the floor and tears in my eyes. Fantastic storytelling, another job well done.

A culling. A revolt. A prophecy. A sandcastle on the verge of collapsing.

I'm going to kick over that damn sandcastle.

Sofia 'I can't understand why people have different views than me and don't want to do what I tell them to' Claremont is still in The Shade with her Vampire Prince, Derek. But things become difficult when Sofia is faced with a choice: turn into a vampire or go and live with the rest of the humans who are slaves to the islands vampires. So she chooses the later....because reasons. Then there's a revolt by the humans, Sofia is supposed to be wed to another vampire, and she's kidnapped, and other stuff happens but I really don't care.

Sofia wants the vampires to change. She wants them to only drink animal blood. Why? Because she says so, that's why! Oh, I'm sorry? You have a differing opinion or solution to the one I have in mind? Well, that doesn't matter, because what I say goes because I'm a 17 year old white girl who happens to have a vampire prince wrapped around my little finger. Does Sofia ever ask what Derek wants??!! She is so selfish and moany it's truely getting on my nerves. Vampires are vampires. And one girl wanting to choose the path of thousands of vampires because she's not happy. Egh.

The language is repetitive and uninspiring. The dialogue is stale and boring. Literally any character could be saying anyone's line because there is nothing in their speech that delineates them. All the characters are one-dimensional. And Ben deciding after two whole books that you know what, vampires aren't so bad after all, even after he became a hunter and being all tough. It did not ring true at all. This book was about going from point a to point b, and it doesn't really matter how we get there.

But it was quick, easy, forgettable, and now I'm on track with my reading target =D

WOW! Bella Forrest never ceases to amaze me!! Her work is full of drama, romance and so much more! I love reading her style of writing, its AH_MAY_ZING!! A Castle of Sand is the best yet, in my opinion.

Sofia is caught up in an unknown world that has become her own. She is now with the man she loves and is trying to move on, only there seems to be others who would like nothing more than to separate them and those who would love to have Sofia for their own sick purposes. As if that's not enough Sofia soon learns the truth about BOTH her parents and is none too happy with how she finds out. Ben is back in the picture however, this time its on his terms, he's changed and matured a lot since the last Sofia has seen him. He is more accepting to the life style Sofia has chosen to live.

Derek is having not only issues with his brother but now his father as well. He is still recovering from the loss of his sister and trying to protect Sofia at all cost. His father is not making any thing easy on him, especially anything that concerns Sofia, he would rather her be out of the picture.

Once I started to read this story I couldn't help but be captivated, the world Bella Forrest has brought to us is EPIC. I loved everything about this series. I cant wait to see what comes next, there was so many twist in this one, I know the next chapter is going to be just as good if not better!

It's becoming better and better!

I already liked book 1 and 2 but I definitely loved book 3!

It's full of action, twists and turns and you can never guess what will happen next! I couldn't put it down!

The romance between Derek and Sofia is intense, both trying to live it fully, aware this could be a Castle of Sand. They try to "meet in the middle", to find a way to be together eternally without Sofia being turned and plagued by the hunger.

We discover more about the main characters, their pasts, how they are growing and maturing. Sofia is more confident, fighting her own battles and no longer hiding behind Derek. She is becoming a key player at The Shade and helps Derek to confront his demons and become a better man. Derek is looking for a way to reconcile the vampire needs and protecting the humans, inspired by Sofia's love and determination. Together, they are more. My favourite quote: "they are strongest together. They are weakest apart".

Ben discovers vengeance is not that helpful and becomes wiser, even more serene at the end.

Surprisingly, even Claudia seeks redemption.

But what a cliffhanger! Now, I can't wait for book 4!

I received the first for free in exchange for an honest review and I'm so glad the author sent it.

One of the best vampire series I've read.

Bella, I hope you work fast ;-))

5 of 5 stars.

Bella throws herself before the lions. Head first never looking back!

Already the third and last book of this lovely Shade series!
Sofia is an amazing character, in one hand terrible what she have to go true but wow what would of be great to be in her shoes. She is strong and knows what she want en of course she is getting it. And by it I mean the amazing Derek.

Sofia is torn between Derek, his father Gregor, the other human on the island and her best friend who is with the hunters who are gaining more and more strength and resources. Sofia wants more for the humans on the island but want to support Derek also.

So we get a bit better feel of the internal structure of the shade. Also our first real look into the hunter society and The Oasis. I like the human involvement in the shade as things start to change. Just not sure if it is all for the better....
Gregor is horrible! Ugh! I cannot stand his character. Ben finally improves as a character however so that makes up for things. There are several shocking turns in this book for how short it was. With Sofia's family ties every which way, I cannot hardly fathom the mess and confusion it all must cause. Overall, a pretty good read but it does have a few drag points that make me question if the story is going anywhere, especially for how long it is.

This book was so much better than book 2! Action packed from the very beginning. Lots of questions answered, new characters introduced, new battles and humans actually taking a stand! This series just keeps getting better. I still have one unanswered question. What happened to Vivienne? IS she or isn't she??? Now on to book 4

I enjoyed all the new POV chapters. While certain characters are annoying, it was helpful to know their thought process and try to understand them.

With that ending I have to read the next book now!

A Castle of Sand is so incredible! I think it's my favourite book of the series so far, for a number of reasons. There's just so much in it, and so many changes. Sofia and Derek's relationship is put to the test, and it's uncertain whether they can get past it. Sofia's mother and father are both back in her life, and that changes a lot too, since they're nothing like she expected. This book, guys... I want to re-read it already! It was that good.

I want to start with Derek because he shined so much in this book. He totally redeemed himself for whatever he did in A Shade of Blood, and I honestly fell for him even more in this. He becomes a lot more... human, I guess. He's empathetic, and he really tries so hard to be worthy of Sofia. The things he endures for her! Everything he does, he does for Sofia. And I think it's incredible how much he loves her. There's this one scene that almost got me yelling at him for being so damn selfless, but at the same time I almost teared up because it was so sweet. And he really is sweet in this book. Yeah, it might be hard to imagine, so you'll get what I'm talking about when you read it. And he's even so totally honourable, too! I really did not expect it of Derek, but he's a complete gentleman. It was kind of funny in places, but I loved how resolute he was. You guys really have to read this series, if just for Derek.

Sofia is as noble as ever, and she strives to gain more rights for the humans in the Shade. She's stubborn, persuasive, and she really gets things done. I was pretty surprised at her amazing leadership skills! On top of everything happening at the Shade, Sofia has to deal with the fact that Ben left to become a Hunter, and Vivienne is gone because of her. Because Vivienne wanted Sofia to save the Shade, and save Derek. Sofia also finds out some life-changing secrets about both her parents, and it tears her apart. I can't even imagine what it must be like for her. But she perseveres, because she has to. She retains her impeccable sense of right and wrong, and this is both a benefit and a flaw. Sofia also finds out a humongous revelation about herself, something that I think will shape the next book in the series. It comes right at the end, so I'm obviously very frustrated with the cliffhanger!

I loved that there was a dual POV from Derek and Sofia, as well as a few POVs from Ben and even Lucas and Claudia. It really gave me an insight into all of their minds, and what they're really thinking. It helped me understand them. Well, except for Lucas. I don't think I'll ever understand him, or even want to. But I did find myself feeling for Claudia, of all people. Claudia! I never thought that would happen. And Ben.. I missed him in this book. He's there, but not as much. But I'm glad that he does accept Sofia and Derek's relationship. He realizes that they're meant to be together. I really want Ben to have a happy ending too, though. He deserves it.

There is so much action and suspense and shockers in this book, all of them left me reeling. And that ending! Such a huge cliffhanger. I'm honestly dying for the next book. Thank goodness Bella writes ninja fast and I'll hopefully get to read it within the next few months! This is one of my favourite vampire series ever, and I can't wait to see what happens next in Derek and Sofia's story.

Review originally published at Love, Literature, Art, and Reason Book Review Blog

Bella Forrest has done it again! I love this series! A Castle of Sand was amazing and the story just keeps building and getting more complex. If I thought there was nowhere left for the story to go, I was definitely wrong, because I can’t get enough. The plot is incredibly interesting and completely unpredictable. I’m already waiting impatiently for the next installment.

I’m amazed by the character growth in A Castle of Sand, especially characters like Ben and Claudia. None of the characters in A Shade of Vampire series stay stagnant. They all grow and change in their own ways. Sofia really grew in A Castle of Sand. While she was struggling with her uncertainty of the future and her place in The Shade next to Derek’s side, she wasn’t afraid to stand up for herself and the issues she cared about. She has moments of weakness, but she’s never a spineless heroine in love with a vampire and I totally admire that about her. Derek grew as a person, too, standing up to his father and attempting to do the right thing. His moments of weakness were few and far between and Sofia really was his anchor. Seeing the two of them compliment each other so well was awesome.

The conflict in A Castle of Sand was great. Tensions between the Naturals of the island and the vampires were high, especially vampires that were loyal to Derek’s father. The blood supply was running low and something had to be done. Sofia’s past was important in A Castle of Sand as various groups, both human and vampire, were looking for her as a part of their game. Ben became a vampire hunter and integrated himself into that community. Lucas became more dangerous than ever after aligning himself with enemies. Sofia wasn’t safe on her own island due to Derek’s father.

I didn’t know how A Castle of Sand would end or what would happen to the characters I cared about. It was an edge-of-my-seat read the entire time. I was worried about Sofia’s safety and also worried about her future with Derek, while also worrying about the entire future of the Shade. It was nerve-wracking!

I can’t wait to read more of the series and I highly recommend it. It’s a wonderful YA vampire paranormal romance series that is high in both romance and paranormal action and plot, appealing to every part of me. I can’t get enough of these books.
