A collection of horror and sci-fi stories for all tastes. Adam Hulse (Below Economic Thresholds, The Growth) brings you scares from the past, present, and future. Features two collaborations with Sarah Jane Huntington (Cabin Terror, Bleeding Into New Worlds).
A fun, quick, easy read, this collection of "rejected" shorts is primarily horror focused, with dashes of sci-fi and dark fantasy sprinkled in here and there to give it a nice dynamic and eclectic feel.
The tales are all fairly brief but still pack enough punch and have enough meat on their bones to be satisfying and at times thought provoking, which I always enjoy and appreciate in any flavor of speculative fiction. There were a handful of moments that niggled me a bit in some of the stories but they were few and far between and I suspect most readers will gloss right over them or find them easy to ignore in favor of enjoying the overall experience as I did.
Some of my personal favorites are: "Let Me Tell You About Your Father," "Leech," "The Pied Piper of Hamlintown," "Nothing But Ashes," and "Opt-Out." I'm also particularly fond of the two collaborations with Sarah Jane Huntington, "A Child in the Shadow of God" and "Even Gatekeepers Die," which close out the collection with a real bang.
I think it's also worth mentioning the little notes included at the end of each story, which I'd say do a lot to contextualize them and give some interesting and often-charming insights into the author's thoughts and processes regarding their creation and refinement.
Highly recommended, especially for those interested in sampling Hulse's style and effective range as a writer.
