I let her into my home. And now she’s destroying my life…
I open the creaking oak front door of my beautiful country house to see a stranger on my doorstep. The woman is stunning with glossy red hair and flawless make up. ‘Can I help you?’ I ask.
That was my first mistake.
Alexis tells me she is a distant relative and shows me a DNA match on her phone. She has no family and would love to get to know us. My husband Hugh invites her in to join our dinner party. As we drink wine, she opens up about her sad childhood. Her amber eyes are mesmerising and I can see my husband is being drawn in by her story. Then she asks for our help.
Saying yes was the second mistake.
As Alexis and Hugh spend time together, swimming in our luxurious pool and playing tennis in the sunshine, my husband grows distant and the deep cracks in our relationship begin to show. And when our house guest gets me to open up about my marital problems, I start to wonder why she’s really here.
And then I discover a secret about Alexis that makes my blood run cold.
Am I being paranoid? Or will inviting Alexis into our home destroy my marriage? And is it too late to get rid of her, before she puts our lives in danger…?
An absolutely addictive and unputdownable psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the last page. For anyone who loves Ruth Ware, Freida McFadden and Claire McGowan.
I was born in the Cotswolds but spent most of my formative years abroad. I studied languages at Oxford, then became a journalist and author, returning to university after my two children to take a law degree. After a three-year stint as a criminal paralegal, I worked as a commercial copywriter and then a TV storyliner, before coming full circle to write fiction again.
Beware of people who show up on your doorstep claiming to be a relative!
Hugh and Juliet Mullen welcome Alexis Lambert, a woman claiming to be a distant cousin, into their home and it doesn’t take long for them to regret their generosity and naivete. Questionable things begin occurring at Mullens End, the Queen Anne-style country estate on the outskirts of London.
We’ve all been there, right?! Suckered in by someone with ulterior motives. Gaslighted.
While we may be able to identify with the feeling, James makes sure to present us with a gripping and original plot. She builds on the intrigue and regret to pull readers into a fast-paced, multi-layered, multi-POV, thriller with twist after twist after twist. You know the late-night infomercial that says, “But wait, there’s more!”? I felt like James was whispering from the pages, telling me to gear up for another twist. I didn’t know who to trust and I didn’t know what was going to happen next….I just knew that something BIG was going to happen when one or both of the Mullens got to the end of their rope. Oh, to be a fly on the wall in Mullens End.
This is a great psychological thriller and will leave you convinced that author James could write a book about learning the warning signs of gaslighting! 😅
This is my 4th book by this author and she’s quickly becoming an auto-read choice for me!

My Thoughts
Alison James' "The House Guest" is a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers. Initially, the story may seem to have a slow start, but as you delve deeper, it evolves into a gripping and fast-paced narrative with an original plot that keeps you engrossed from start to finish.
This multi-layered thriller offers a unique reading experience with multiple points of view, each contributing to the intricate web of the story. You'll be on the edge of your seat as the plot unfolds, revealing twist after twist that defies your expectations.
One of the book's strengths lies in its well-drawn characters. Each character is written with depth and authenticity, making it easy to connect with them, even when you might dislike some of them. The story is told from four different perspectives, and each character becomes the protagonist of their own narrative, adding depth and complexity to the plot.

It did not take long for me to become fully invested in this story. The character development was on par. The story is told from several perspectives. Juliet and Hugh live on his family estate, and they are the envy of their friends and family. Alexis turns up on their doorstep claiming to be a distant relative, she has DNA results that prove it. I loved the plot twists, they just kept coming. with themes of infidelity, trust issues, family and friendship, this was an intriguing read.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #AlisonJames for my ARC of #TheHouseGuest in exchange for an honest review.
This is a psychological thriller like no other. Told in several points of view. It’s the story of Juliet and Hugh living in Hugh’s family estate Mullen’s End. They are the envy of their friends and family. When a woman called Alexis turns up, claiming to be a distant relative. A DNA match confirms it. The couple now concerned about their inheritance. Alexis stays at their home until her own flat is redecorated but she doesn’t seem to want to leave and slowly she and Hugh get closer together while Juliet looks on and worries about her marriage to Hugh. But if they did divorce Hugh would have to pay her a hefty sum of money. I have a been a fan of Amanda James from her very first book and I couldn’t wait to get stuck into her latest novel. It was a bit slow to start with and even though I thought it was an entertaining read. It was because for me personally I thought it was a bit too far fetched for me. Especially Hugh, the character was too convincing. 3 stars from me.
The thing i love most about this is it tells the same story in different parts from the main characters pov.. The burb is well written and does not give away the true nature of this fast pasted novel. The twists and turns and unravelling story made tgis quite the oage turner. I particularly like the way the burb is written from the lst characters point of view we get to rear and its the one thats most appealing. I loved tge plot as i felt this could gappen and the final reveal was logical and gripping. Thank you netgallery and publisher and author for a cracking 5 star read
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this fast-paced and engaging novel, which I finished in just two days because I was hooked! Alison James’s writing style is smooth as glass, making it easy for me to glide right into the story.
The main characters, married couple Hugh and Juliet, live in a mansion that’s been in Hugh’s family for generations. Belinda is their dear friend who is at their house a lot. Alexis is Hugh’s third cousin who invites herself to stay with Hugh and Juliet for several weeks.
Alexis’s intrusion causes problems, and not just the normal problems of hosting a houseguest. There’s something sinister about her, and Juliet mistrusts her. With a slow building tension, everyone starts to turn on each other and things get truly dangerous.
Each of the four protagonists has chapters told from their POV, so we readers can see how much they all lied to each other. That shifting perspective made it really entertaining to read.
The setting in present day England was relatable, and I liked that the characters used What’s App and other social media. It felt realistic.
I’m looking forward to reading more by this author since I had fun reading The House Guest. My rating is 4.5 stars and I always round up.
Thank you very much Netgalley and Bookouture Audio for giving me the free audio download of this book for review consideration.
An improbable story tbh but because it is told well I chose to ignore that mostly and got on with enjoying it Love a story re wealthy folk and long lost family turning up to swoop on inheritances and cause chaos Unusually told by 3 characters throughout so say roughly a third of the book is told by one of the 3, in essence you get the same story in triple but told by very different viewpoints Did like the characters, even the baddies had their good points and loved the description of the main family Surrey Mansion and all the pomp and grandeur went with it If you are prepared to overlook a few glaring ‘mmmmmm, how could this be’ moments this is a fine thriller with a cuckoo who bites off more than can handle a d characters whose entitlement cant quite fix everything…..
ARC audiobook provided in exchange for an honest review.
I was blown away by the narration on this book! Even though it’s only a single narrator, she seamlessly covers multiple main characters points of view and I always knew who was speaking! The story really blew me away! I’m the kind of person that usually thinks three or four moves ahead, sometimes making things more complex in my mind than what happens in the book, but not this time! Every time I thought I knew exactly where it was headed, it switched course and threw me off guard! I would definitely recommend to anyone who likes psychological thrillers with unreliable narrators!
I see myself as a pretty hospitable person, but I would not just invite a stranger into my home because they show up claiming to be family. Hugh and Juliet live in a beautiful home that belongs to his family, and while they live there and enjoy all the luxuries that come with it, the home will never be theirs.. It can only remain in the hands of an heir, but their marriage hasn't produced any children.. So they enjoy their days there knowing it will one day pass on to a distant cousin When Alexis shows up claiming to be the rightful her, their world begins unraveling at the seams. You will be left struggling who you can trust and if you should even trust anyone. This fast paced psychological thriller is a wild ride, and I enjoyed it every step of the way. Hold on tight because your head will be spinning. Jan Cramer did a wonderful job narrating this audiobook, her voice made listening to it a delight and it was easy to distinguish between the different characters. Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture Audio for this ARC for an honest review.

The starting introduces us to a happily married couple Juliet and Hugh who live in a posh and rich Mullen's end. After a glimpse into the life of Juliet in her own words, she receives a message from a distant cousin of Hugh who might have a legal claim on Mullen's end.
And then starts a tale of betrayals and secrets ,twists and turns and affairs and trachery. Told through multiple POV of Juliet, Hugh, Belinda who is Juliet's best friend and Alexis who has come to claim, the house guest weaves a web of deception so convoluted that one might find it difficult to wrap their head around all of it.
Of course there are loopholes which the characters have mentioned themselves but yet again it drags the reader in this dark web. What I loved about it was there wasn't a dull moment in the book. It is fast paced and keeps reader on the edge.
The narration is spot on and I definitely enjoyed it quite much.
Audiobook rating -4 stars Book rating - 4 stars
This was my first novel by the author and I was pleasantly surprised at how well written it was . Will definitely pick up something by Alison James in the future
OK firstly, scrap the book's description because quite honestly it's nothing like how the story goes at all. There is no DNA test result and the red haired beauty on the doorstep doesn't ask for help and the narrator of the piece does not open up to her suggested. And then what is this secret that is discovered? I have to wonder if the proofreaders have read the same book I have because the descriptions are often way off course.
Secondly, you're going to need to suspend belief when reading this tale. And I mean REALLY suspend belief. It all starts out innocuously enough but then it just gets nuts and I mean really way-off-base-never-going-to-happen-in-a-million-years in all probability. Once you take this on board, you're in for a fast paced entertaining, if not idiotic, ride.
Mullens End. It's a beautiful 18th century Queen Anne stately home in which Juliet and her husband Hugh reside. Hugh is the last of a thin line, a very thin line, of Mullens and while he is not the last branch on the tree he is the last on his branch. The home was built in the 1700s but purchased by Hugh's great grandfather in his attempt to stake his claim in the landed gentry and in doing so, crafted a will in which Mullens End is not entailed (much to his ancestor's chagrin) but is tightly bound in a legalese version of such in that only direct descendants of the Mullen line can inherit Mullens End with a life tenancy. Meaning Mullens End can never be sold. And then there is the fact that it is Grade 1 listed meaning no alterations can be made without permission. Thankfully, there is a trust which pays for the exorbidant costs of running a stately home attracts.
So Juliet and Hugh live rather comfortably albeit modestly at Mullens End. The plan was that Juliet provide Hugh with an heir to inherit the grand home as the trust dictates but alas that was not to be, leaving Hugh the last Mullen perched on his branch of the family tree. But their life is good, even amidst the dreaded Open Days such as the one at the beginning of the book that had Juliet dreading. But everyone loves a stately home and their stunning gardens which have been kept immaculate thanks to their gardener Pete. And thankfully it's only once a year they have to open their gardens up to the public.
It's at a dinner party Juliet and Hugh are hosting that they receive an unexpected knock on their door. On the doorstep is a young red haired beauty who introduces herself as Alexis Lambert, the heir to Mullens End, and as she's between flats at the minute has popped in to introduce herself, wheeling her large suitcase in behind her and plonking herself down at the dinner table. As Juliet awkwardly presents the roast lamb to their guests, Alexis informs them that she's vegan which sends Hugh off looking for something veggie for their unexpected house guest.
If you think that's awkward, stick around for the rest of the mucky story because it gets a whole lot more convoluted and murky than that! Again, that whole believability thing. Still the tightly-woven plot makes for plenty of twists (believable or not) and a compelling read that is both entertaining and suspenseful.
The characters are a crafty bunch. None of them are particularly likable. Even Juliet, who is probably the most likable, is so rigid and practically unemotional it's hard to connect with her. And Hugh is so self entitled and spoilt, he expects everything to fall into place according to what he wants. Alexis is naturally devious. And Belinda is decidedly shifty. What I love though is the narratives are divided into seven parts throughout and four separate perspectives with each character becoming the protagonist in their own narrative, and therefore allowing each one of them to develop with the right amount of depth and authenticity. This only adds to the complexities within the already complex plot. And makes for such delicious reading.
There is, however, a downside. Unfortunately I must make mention a TRIGGER WARNING here with the death of a beloved dog. And not just a death, but a cruel one, which I find unnecessary to any story and I always down-rate one that includes one. Granted, it wasn't prolonged or mulled over for long and passed within a page or so but it was mentioned within three separate narratives from their respective perspectives, and I had to relive the poor dog's cruel demise all over again.
But that aside, THE HOUSE GUEST is a fun an entertaining thriller that you really do have to suspend belief but it's such fun who cares at the end of it? I did love the ending which was so much more than satisfactory. If not for the dog death, this was a close 5 star read.
I would like to thank #AlisonJames, #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheHouseGuest in exchange for an honest review.
The House Guest by Alison James, is a solid 4 star read for me. I thought the storyline was unique, a little far fetched but not enough to turn me away. The author really nailed it with telling the story through four povs. This was my favorite part of the book as it kept me engaged throughout. This wasn’t a typical thriller in that fast paced, nail biting, page turning way you would think. It was an entertaining drama full of suspense, with the different perspectives, and rounded out to a nice finish. Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture Audio, and Alison James for an ARC of this publication!!
From the moment Alexis shows up at their door with her suitcase at her feet, Juliet Mullens is suspicious of her. She’s supposed to be her husband Hugh’s long-lost distant cousin. She’s supposed to be next in line to inherit the beautiful Mullens End estate on which they reside. But all Alexis Lambert seems interested in is Juliet’s husband. He basks in Alexis’ attention and even flirts back. But Juliet isn’t worried. Although Alexis is beautiful, she’s his cousin. Hugh wouldn’t. Or would he?
There’s a chill that’s settled into Hugh and Juliet’s marriage. However, Juliet doesn’t seem to notice. She also doesn’t notice when her husband tip toes across the landing to Alexis’ room the night after her arrival. Hugh hasn’t been happy since he realized he and Juliet would never have a child of their own, meaning there would never be a direct heir to the home he loved so much. He couldn’t move on with his life and have a family with another woman either. Under the terms of his inheritance, divorce wasn’t an affordable option. It would cost him Mullens End. It would have until Alexis showed up, that is.
Alexis isn’t what she seems. Before she even knocked on their door, she had plans for Mullens End. And for Hugh. When Juliet gets called away to Italy to visit her teenage son, she clues Hugh in on part of her idea to get rid of Juliet for good. Hugh jumps at the idea of getting her out of his life without having to get a divorce. It means he’ll be stuck with Alexis instead, and she’s less his type than Juliet, but that’s okay. He has a plan of his own. It starts with him and Alexis faking his death.
With everything going on, Juliet’s grateful to have her best friend Belinda as her confidant. While she’s away in Italy, she trusts Belinda to keep an eye on her husband and new cousin. And after Hugh dies shortly after her return, she leans on Belinda for help while she grieves. Belinda might be the only person she can trust as she lays her husband to rest and Alexis disappears.
A tangled mess of secrets, lies, and deceit, “The House Guest” by Alison James is 315 pages that goes by in a flash. It’s that good! It starts out like almost every other psychological thriller. It sucks you in almost immediately. You fly through the pages, caught up in the suspense and anticipating the big twist. Let’s face it. Books in this genre are judged by the size of the twist more than anything else. But “The House Guest” isn’t anything like any other psych thriller you’ve read. Not recently anyway. The way it’s written will blow your mind. It’s as intricate as a spider web – and as sticky too!
“The House Guest'' is told from the points-of-view of Juliet, Hugh, Alexis, and Belinda. Each character narrates at least one of the seven parts of the book. Because the different POV’s are divided up into parts instead of chapters, it’s not confusing or hard to keep up with at all. In fact, it’s what makes the book so compelling. Each character narrates the goings-on in the story from their first-person perspective. This means there’s some repetition when the details of a scene are repeated by each character (albeit in different sections). However, it doesn’t feel like repetition, because each character is telling their version of the events. You get to know each character and their mindset in-depth because of this, but you’ll also have a lot more questions and doubts. For example, Hugh and Alexis each have their own motives for what they’re doing. That’s clear from nearly the start. But the motives they reveal might not be their true motives. They lie to each other, and they lie to you. You’re left to try to figure out their true motives, as well as who is out to get whom – and in what way. What about Juliet? Can you trust her? Or Belinda?
You’ll think you have this book figured out early on. You’ll think it’s too easy, and you won’t believe I gave it so many stars. Just keep reading! You’ve never had so many secrets and lies to untangle. The only thing you can count on is Belinda sweating through her clothes in nearly every scene. She might be a little stinky, but hold your nose and keep reading. The book is brilliantly done!
Thank you to Bookouture and Alison James for the complimentary eARC in exchange for a fair, unbiased review.
Sleep is overrated anyway, at least it was for me once I dove into this book. The tangled web of sinister twists and turns just kept hitting me from all sides. This book is a good lesson of the consequences of getting caught up in lies and deceit.
Hugh and Juliet Mullen are the perfect couple. They have the perfect home known as Mullens End. One evening a stranger shows up at the door to their home. Alexis Lambert is the heir to their home upon Hugh's death. I know this sounds strange, but you will just have to trust me and read it to find out why. Red flags started waving for me immediately. Juliet is not happy with the appearance of this woman and wants her out of the house, but Hugh is so transparent in his kindness of allowing her to stay on the estate. I am sure it has nothing to do with the fact that she is model gorgeous. Things are about to get hairy, so you better hang on for the ride of your life from the time Alexis shows up until you close this book. From that point forward you know something big is about to happen, but I must confess that I was completely shocked at the direction this book to after this new visitor makes her appearance.
This book will keep you turning the pages late into the night. The twists will blindside you as the revelations just kept coming. Whew! I need a break now.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
From the very first page, I found myself completely engrossed in the story. The multitude of twists and turns that unfolded throughout kept me on the edge of my seat, eagerly devouring each chapter in anticipation of what would happen next. This psychological thriller is a perfect example of a fast-paced narrative that never lets up, constantly delivering surprises and keeping the reader hooked until the very end.
One of the standout elements of this book is the exceptional character development. Each character is meticulously crafted, with their own unique personalities and motivations that add depth and complexity to the story. It's refreshing to see such well-written characters that feel real and relatable, making it easy to become emotionally invested in their journey.
But it's not just the characters that make this book shine. The writing itself is truly exceptional, with vivid descriptions and a captivating narrative that brings the story to life. The author's ability to create tension and build suspense is masterful, resulting in a reading experience that is both thrilling and immersive.
And let's talk about the plot. It's not only fast-paced but also incredibly original and fresh. This is not your typical psychological thriller with predictable twists and turns. Instead, it takes unexpected detours and introduces surprising elements that keep you guessing until the very end. The level of intrigue is off the charts, as secrets are revealed and layers of deception are peeled away, leaving you constantly questioning who can be trusted.
Overall, I cannot recommend this book enough. It's the perfect choice for anyone looking for a gripping and immersive reading experience. So, grab a cozy blanket, curl up in it, and get ready to be completely captivated by this tale of secrets, intrigue, gaslighting, and deceit. You won't be able to put it down!

Thank You to NetGalley for the opportunity to read the ARC (Advance Reader Copy) of The House Guest by Alison James. This was a great book and it is my first by this author. This story was told in many different perspectives which helped to move the story along. it was a really good read that I would highly recommend to others as it was hard to put down. It has some unexpected twists along the way. I gave it a 4 star rating. #TheHouseGuest #NetGalley
Thank you Bookouture and NetGallery for this ARC! Wow! Just make sure you don’t have anything too important to do cause you won’t be able to put this book down! The story takes place at Mullins End, the grand generational home of Hugh and Juliet Mullen. When a stranger claiming to be Hugh’s third cousin and heir to the house after Hugh, it all goes down hill from there. This story is told from the point of view from each main character and I absolutely love this concept. Everyone has their own agenda and this story is perfectly weaved together, with plenty of love, lust and greed to go around within all the twist and turns.
This was my 2nd novel by this author and I throughly enjoyed this one.
❓If someone showed up at your door claiming to have proof they are a relative would you automatically let them enter your home?
Alexis how’s up at the doorstep of Hugh and Juliet’s home on a family estate. Trust becomes an issue quickly as Juliet believes Alexis has ulterior motives and is a little too friendly with her husband.
This novel has it all. Deceit, secrets, twists, and so much more. I love reading a novel when you wonder what the heck is next!
I don't think I have read a book where I have hated ALL of the characters, and I mean ALL OF THEM!. They were so unlikeable, and had no redeeming features. The book played on the tropes of the upper class, and their privilege. The narrator really egged it with the posh accent too! If it wasn't for the fact I was reviewing this book I would have DNF'ed. There were many twists and turns none of which though that were original. I have read similar plots before so none of the twists took me by surprise. Overall, this book was just OK.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for providing me with an ALC of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
James is a new author to me, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this book. At first, it seemed like a straightforward, predictable, and rather slow-moving story. It was entertaining, though, so I kept listening. It was around the halfway point that things completely flipped around and the story became unpredictable and way more entertaining.
There were multiple POVs telling the same story, but it was never repetitive or boring, at any point. Since there were multiple deceptions involved, each perspective offered new information that was vital to understanding what was going on, and while it strained the limits of the readers willing suspension of disbelief at times, it was incredibly entertaining and enjoyable, and I was hooked. By the end, I loved where the story had gone and how James had wrapped everything up.
Great book loved it loved the plot twists. If you ender how a house can affect so many people this is the book to read. The characters were spot on. Such a riveting book . Thanks to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for an early release of this book.
I found this book to be fast paced and interesting with enough twists to keep you guessing (some predictable and some not).
It was suspenseful but not in a “edge of your seat biting your nails anxious” as so many thrillers are. I was constantly plotting ahead trying to figure it all out. It was fun to find out if I was right or not.
The ending did not disappoint! All loose ends tied up in a very neat bow.
"An absolutely addictive and unputdownable psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the last page."
This is part of the blurb which describes 'The House Guest', a novel by Alison James. New to me, this author has written a thriller which captured me from the beginning. Told in alternating perspectives by different protagonists, the story focuses on Juliet and Hugh Mullet, who live in a luxurious country manor. Their mundane life is disturbed by the arrival of Alexis, claiming to be Hugh's cousin. She asks to stay with them while she gets her living situation sorted. Of course, everything is not as it seems and chaos quickly ensues.
I really liked the overall plot of this book; it was fast-paced but easy to follow, even with the different narrators. At times, changing narrators can make things confusing but this was not an issue here.
My main complaint was that I guessed the 'whodunit' aspect of the storyline pretty quickly, and would have liked just a bit more mystery throughout. However, I still enjoyed it!
*A great many thanks to Netgalley, Alison James, and Bookouture for this ARC. It is important to note that I was not committed to providing a positive review; all opinions are undoubtedly my own.*
Releasing Nov 1 2023. Everything turns messy when a girl who claims to be a distant cousin shows up uninvited expecting a place to stay. I had tons of fun reading about these rich people and their scandalous drama and lies. The nerve and reckless behaviors portrayed by the characters have you gasping and turning the pages. I enjoyed the dual POVs, which kept things interesting by seeing what each person knew. The characters are immoral and think they are all outwitting each other. I found it quite ironic and funny seeing them struggle. Unfortunately, the ending fell flat for me. We are meant to have justice and a pleasant conclusion, yet justice wasn’t even served to the full extent. I just needed more from the ending, I wished it left my jaw on the floor. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
This is the second book I've had from this author and is another amazing 5* read!
Once again, the writing style just pulls you straight in with an intriguing storyline and interesting characters. I was hooked from start to end!
This was told through 4 different pov's and although there were quite a few characters to get to grips with, this was all easily distinguished and clearly narrated. Using the different narrator's also helped to remember which pov we were in, although there was a difinitive split for each storyline.
I loved that this was a fairly complex plot again - not in the sense that it was hard to follow, but in that there were some brilliant twists throughout. Every time, I thought that I could see how things would pan out, I was thrown by a new development in the whole scheme. I was totally obsessed and couldn't stop listening to this .....I was just desperate to know how it would all end.
The characters were all brilliant to explore. Seeing the story from the different pov's was amazing as each new person told the same story but with a twist and with exciting new revelations. Adding a new layer on top of what we already knew.
Be prepared for your stereotypes in this - the stuck up manor house country types and the airhead flirt - they absolutely work so well!
This was fast-paced, exciting and I devoured it in only a couple of sittings. Brilliant! I'm off to pick my next read by this author because I am now hooked!
A riveting tale of inheritance, love and scandal. The story opens up in the ambience of the grand house with an ongoing neighbourly party that is interrupted by the new house guest who claims to be the next in line to inherit this beautiful place. As the new guest enters their life, everything has been derailing ever since, their marriage, trust and probably everything else too. But the most astonishing part is the hidden reality of the new guest!
The book was a fast-paced thriller that kept prompting me that everything goes downhill from here, and yet reviving another trump card one after another. What worked in this case was the multiple PoV discussed one after another, shedding the required amount of clarity to the reader. You will be able to predict a few twists coming up your alley, but mostly it's pretty quizzical.
Thank you @netgalley @bookouture for the audiobook
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review. Hugh and Juliet Mullen reside in the beautiful family estate of Mullens End and they are the envy of all that know them. Each year they throw a lavish party at the estate and it is the talk of the town. However, this year a stranger knocks at their door and when she introduces herself as Alexis, Hugh’s long lost cousin things at the Estate start to take a dramatic turn. We learn very early in the story that Mullens End is an Estate that can only pass down to members of the Mullen bloodline and as Hugh and Juliet could not have any children of their own, this long lost relative is the only living survivor of the Mullen family who would be the next in line to inherit Mullens End. This could only occur when Hugh passes away but at 35 years of age, that wouldn’t be for a very long time……or would it? I really liked this twisty psychological thriller and it kept me wanting to read to find out how this would all unfold….Enjoy!!
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for access to this arc in exchange for my honest review.
This book is divided in different POV, while reading the first, I thought I had some things figured out haha, I hated a few characters, but the twists ! I really LOVED what happened to those I didn't like haha, it was the best that could happen. It felt a little repetitive sometimes as we read another POV, but it was still a very interesting read.
