After unexpectedly losing her adoptive mother and discovering some rather disconcerting secrets, archeologist Ember decides to do a little digging into her heritage, only to find that things aren’t exactly what they seem. When she heads to Oregon in an attempt to uncover the truth, she falls into a portal leading to the magical realm, Queridian. Who should find her but sexy Fae Vampire, Alexei who tells her that she’s his prisoner and he’s taking her to see the King. Will she be able to survive this new realm and all of the creatures within, or will this spontaneous trip ultimately lead to her doom?
Oh my freaking gods… if I could give this more than 5 stars I would!
It is so nice to have a fantasy book where the fmc isn’t a teenager.
The ending. That cliffhanger. I knew it but the heartache and the pain and all the feels I have felt reading this book I don’t want the story to end.
I need the 2nd book, added to my want to read and as soon as it releases I am having it cos holy gods. - edited the 2nd book a blaze in the shadows is out so I have just gone and bought this as I need to continue the story.
I don’t think I can express just how good this story is you will just have to read it and fall in love with Ember and co like me.
Thank you for sending this to me as an ARC book I am genuinely so grateful and so happy to got to read such a phenomenal story.
An Ember in the Dark follows fmc Ember and the events after her mother's passing. We pretty quickly get to Queridian, which I have mixed feelings about. I enjoyed reading a story that progressed quickly vs having tons of world building at the beginning, but I also maybe didn't feel as connected to Ember because of that? That being said, I became very invested once she did get to Queridian and she really started coming into herself. Some of her struggles really resonated with me and I grew to love her development, which we see a lot of in this book. There is a fair share of world building, which is seemingly easy to follow. I would say there's really no spice in this book, but the tension is hot! If you're looking for explicit scenes on page, though, you won't find it here. This is my first book by this author, so depending on her style I can definitely see spice being in the next book. 😉 There are some pretty loveable side characters (which I have already purchased book 2 and see that it's multi-pov so I'm super excited to see/hear more from them!) My only qualms, which may be a knit-pick, is that sometimes I felt like the pacing was odd. And language could be a bit jarring sometimes. But Ember did come from earth, of course. So I kept reminding myself of that. All in all I had a fun time reading this and I am invested in our fmc, mmc, and side characters. I'm looking forward to going into book 2!
“An Ember In The Dark - Realm Of Queridian: Book 1” Author: L.J. Burkhart
A detailed story about a woman trying to find her place in the world and trying find out about her heritage. Not knowing where she comes from or who she really is.
The characters are diverse and relatable. For some they can really hit home and I love how the main female character is confident in herself, but at the same time has her own insecurities. The sub-characters are phenomenal and supportive, in a way that isn’t over bearing and you definitely want to be in their presence.
The plot is amazing and can be relatable for some. A woman has a major loss in her life and goes on an exhilarating adventure to find herself and more about her heritage. With shocking twists and turns throughout the book.
The pacing was just right. It’s an easy book to read and very easy to follow along with the story that is being told. The world building is beautiful and very detailed.
What I really liked was that it was an easy book to read. It didn’t take me too long to finish it. The characters are diverse and cunning. The fact that it touched on certain hard topics to talk about, was very inspiring. The writing is so descriptive, that I could actually invision what the worlds and other descriptive elements would look like.
The only thing that I would say that I didn’t like would be that it was a slow burn romance. I usually like that, but with this storyline, I personally needed it sooner. It would have also been nice to have a Map of the realm’s and a pronunciation guide for some of the characters’ names. This was book 1, so I’m hoping it is building up the spice for book 2.
This book is definitely recommended for the audience that it’s written for. The writing is for more of a mature audience. I would say this book would be for the Fantasy/Romance genre. It’s a very enjoyable book. I would definitely read it again and I would recommend this book to family and friends, especially someone who is intrigued in reading fantasy books or novels with complex storylines and characters.
For me, I would give this book a 4.5 stars out of 5. As an adult I would liked to have had more racy scenes in it and even more romance. Which I’m hoping we see in book 2. Which I will be reading.
In conclusion, L.J. Burkhart’s, “An Ember In The Dark - Realm Of Queridian: Book 1”, was eloquently written and so immersive, you could see yourself in the worlds that she built and as the characters she created. It really puts you into the middle of the story yourself. The imagination, the storytelling, and the characters take you into a place that you feel is real.
I really liked this book. It took me a couple of chapters to get into the writing style (I think that is what it was?) but after that it was cake.
I enjoyed how a modern day/Earth girlie ends up in a fantasy-esque world with the magic and magical races. It is totally realtable to have the WTF moments/thoughts and declarations we use and hear everyday in an environment where they are not used to it but you don't have to hide it.
I actually liked the differences that LJ Burkhart made with the mythical species that we have come to be used to in fanatasy. Anytime an author can switch it up and throw a different and realistic twist on these... I love it. It is unreasonable to have certain races/species be immortal, strong, and basically undefeatable and you have this human or half bred come in and suppose to defeat the most powerful one so when we can have a more realistic scenario, its more believable.
Ok Now I want to address the fact that there are 2 versions of this book. An orginial (with spice) and a clean one. I read them both in tandem because I wanted to know how the author did it and what changes were made.
The author said that more differences are in the second book and I will see because I plan to read them together as well. However, I made quite a few notes on differences between the clean and orginial versions and this is what I found:
LJ Burkhart did you guys a solid! The clean version took the words and descriptions like sexual tension and lust from the OG and used attraction and being drawn to each other instead. Even the heavier curse works like the f-word is changed to hell (although, please note that there are a few F-words in the clean version but only when sh*t gets really real).
So, there may not be majoy spicy scenes in this first one to do much changing, but there were so many small, little details that were changed so those who don't want any mild spiciness can enjoy the clean version.
The orginial version gives you the beginning build up of heat between the FMC and the MMC to give you a taste of whats to come.
This book, the first in a series, introduces Ember, a young woman who embarks on a journey of self-discovery and uncovers a world beyond her imagination. Following her mother's tragic death, Ember stumbles into a portal that leads her to a realm where vampires, fay, mermaids, and magical creatures exist. Here, she encounters Alexei, a brooding vampire tasked with escorting Ember to the king, setting the stage for an exciting adventure.
The book was fast-paced, and the characters were likable. The sexual tension between Alexei and Ember is spot on, and book one leaves me with a lot of hope for some spice in book two. King Stavros is sweet, but there is so much I want to know! The side characters were written well, and I loved Pearl from the start. Certain relationships have that instant love or install friendship feel, but I enjoyed it and kept trying to read faster.
The book concludes with a cliffhanger, leaving me both thrilled with the potential for the series and desperate for immediate answers. The witty banter, the integration of both magic and human elements, and the intriguing world-building all contribute to a great story. I'm particularly excited to delve deeper into the various races and factions, and to have my lingering questions answered in the next installment.
If you like a feel-good romance with a realistic but tough FMC, a grumpy but sexy vampire, and magic, this book is for you. I can't wait to pick up book two.
📚 ARC Review 📚 Book: An Ember in the Dark Author: L.J. Burkhart
Read If You Enjoy 🔥 One Bed & One Horse 🔥 Slow Burn Forbidden Love 🔥 Found Family
I loved this story. Ember, while digging into her family heritage after the death of her adoptive mother, finds herself in the realm of Queridian after falling through a magical portal. She is immediately greeted by grumpy and gorgeous Alexei, a Fae Vampire, who informs her that she must be taken to see the King.
This was a really fun read. This book was filled with my favourite romance tropes, and the witty and flirty banter between Alexei and Ember was amazing at adding insane tension to their relationship. My absolute favourite part of this story was Ember unique magic, and that is all I am going to say about it. Ember is really loud, outspoken, and doesn’t take anything from anyone, which was a really great dynamic to grumpy Alexei.
If you are looking for a fast-paced forbidden love slow-burn fantasy, full of one-on-one combat training, unique magic, found family and mystery, this should be your next read.
This is the first book in the Realm of Querdian series, and I can’t wait to see where this story goes after the cliffhanger ending of this book.
Thank you, L.J., for providing me with an ARC copy of An Ember in the Dark, in exchange for an honest review ❤️
A mysterious prophecy! Always a good start into a book! Followed by the car accident that makes our fmc find out that her adoptive mother had kept secrets about her heritage. So she finds herself in another realm. And meets this handsome mmc, who has to save her from a horde of vampires. They have to treck through the country because she has to be brought up to the king. Of course there is tension. A lot of. And it‘s written so beautifully that you can feel it in every cell of your own skin!
I loved that the author didn‘t shy away from difficult topics like segregation and wants Ember to change that, while everyone else in the kingdom is happily explaining why they need it for breeding here and there. The world building was also beautifully done. Every species has different kind of foods (I‘m curious about the witches and mermaid ones. Oh and the mimics!)
Pearl was so adorable. And to make the mermaids into a polyamorous species, just perfect. Stavros turning into Dad-mode was adorable. And Xanto in the end…I really hope his form will be a dog.
The ending..oh it left me speechless! I knew Alexej and Ember would end up being mates. But that ending? I can‘t wait to read the second book!
my rating might be closer to a 3.5 but i figure that it rounds to 4 stars.
i want to start by saying that the mmc alexei was such a good character! he was such a good love interest and carried me through the book.
initially, i wasn’t too excited about the plot, especially when ember was still in the mortal realm. but obviously, it really improved by the time she actually fell into the other world, queridian.
there was a lot of world building which made the fantasy aspect more fun. however, i was fairly indifferent because i was there for the romance, which was sooo good. i swear i was giggling and kicking my feet so much.
so, to summarize, the romance in this book was well done and the fantasy world building was super fun. the plot was a little slow at the beginning but it got much better as the story progressed.
It took me a while to get into this book. Ember’s journey from losing her mother to arriving in the Immortal City seemed to go very fast and I started to enjoy it more when they settled in one location.
I loved how unique the realm of Queridian is. Having a world that includes a variety of magical creatures, not just fae, makes it more interesting. With this, having the issue of segregation being one of the central points of the plot makes it interesting to see how this affects Ember as well as how it might change further on. I would love to see more of the other species such as the mermaids & go into their abilities more.
I was very happy that Ember is not a 19-year-old girl and has a degree in archeology which at one time I fantasised about pursuing. I did find Ember annoying at times, she kind of acted like an immature teenager, and the will they/won’t they with Alexei got tiring but I enjoyed their dynamic.
Any book that manages to shock me immediately makes me love it more and to say I was surprised by the actions of a certain character is an understatement. It ended on a great cliffhanger and I am interested in seeing the progression of Ember’s journey.
An Ember in the Dark by L.J. Burkhart is the first book in the Realm of Queridian series and I absolutely loved it.
This is a Fantasy with Found Family, slow burn romance, Portal Fantasy, One Horse and one bed and Grumpy/Sunshine.
This book is told from Ember’s POV. She is the MFC and Alexei is the MMC, he is a sexy vampire Fae. The world building was amazing and the slow burn romance was agenizing. I loved the pacing and the adventure of Alexei and Ember. Amber character goes from not belonging to discovering who she is . She is brave, strong and a bad ass. The book ended on the worst cliffhanger ever and I just want to start reading the next book.
With this cliffhanger ending I can’t wait to read A Blaze in the Shadows.
Thank you @kelsgrace and L.J. Burkhart for sending me this ARC for a honest review
This book consumed me. Absolutely enthralling. Ember is a strong and brave character navigating uncharted territory. She is courageous and determined in her journey to discover who exactly she is and why she always felt like she didn’t belong. The slow burn love that beckons between her and Alexei. Loved the burgeoning friendship with Pearl and can’t wait to see how that forms in the future . The realm of Queridian and all it has to offer, the amount of detail the author has taken the time to describe and create this universe is magnificent. Including the intricacies of the species, interbreeding with there own rules on how everything works especially giving a new take on how vampires are seen in the first few chapters. Honestly cannot wait for the next book.

Whether you’re here for the adventure, the sizzling romance, or the Disney-esque magic, An Ember in the Dark delivers it all. Prepare to be swept away into Queridian, where the stakes are high, the love is epic, and the magic will leave you glowing long after the final page.
Sprinkled throughout the novel are clever Disney-like nods—reminiscent of your favorite childhood fantasies or subtle hints in Ember’s journey of self-discovery that evoke tales like Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid. These references feel like a warm, magical hug for Disney fans, adding an extra layer of delight to an already enthralling tale. A must-read for anyone who’s ever wanted to live in a fairytale—but with a fierce, modern twist.
Overall the plot was okay, it was really saved by the plot twist and cliff hanger in the end. The end made me want to know what happens, but honestly, I am not sure I could suffer through the writing in another book. The writing is very simplistic, first person narrative and it just came off as underdeveloped. This book could have been so much better with more character development, some basic research, and dialogue that wasn’t so simplistic. The FMC may have been older but she certainly speaks like a high schooler and so does her however many hundreds year old love interest from another realm. Overall it read as a great first draft, it just wasn’t ready for publishing.
The journey that Ember is led on after the passing of her adoptive mother is far from normal or of this earth. She discovers her heritage after entering a strange new world which included creatures from humans to vampires, witches, mermaids and more with a very unique way the creatures/races interacted. The abilities they had were so different from the usual. The journey she takes with Alexei who is a fae-vampire developed into much more… hot and steamy!
This book is perfect for anyone who enjoys fantasy - romance and worth the read.
How to describe this book?!? Oh my Gods. The world building is amazing and the characters are fantastic. I absolutely love reading about a FMC who isn’t a teenager and is not a size 2. I couldn’t figure out who the villain was going to be until closer to the end. I had it down to two options but was still surprised by the twist at the end. The cliffhanger had me buying book 2 before I even wrote this review. I cannot wait to get more of Ember and Pearl in the next book. Absolutely would recommend reading.
I wasn’t sure how I felt about this book at first but I was quickly roped in and literally could not put it down! I read instead of studying for my board exam because I needed to know what was next. I loved that as the reader I felt as in the dark and naive as the main character and was left needing even more answers by the end. Some plot points moved a bit quickly for me, especially in the romance department, but I’m really hopeful that the rest of this series dives even deeper into the world that was built in this book! Absolutely loved it.
I just went through so many emotions, I’m gonna need some time to process them…
The cliff hanger at this end of this book gave me some serious whiplash! Just when we’re starting to get comfortable in this new world, BAM plot twist!
Ember is a badass, and tbh I’ve been a vampire hater until reading this book. L.J has turned me (pun intended 😜)!
If you liked ACOTAR, and vampires, this is the book for you babe!
WOW that ending! This book was amazing! I have met LJ Burkhart twice (once at Barnes and nobles and once at book-a-con) and I finally got around to reading this. I regret not reading it sooner because it was so good. The plot was amazing. The writing was a little bumpy at times and sometimes lacked finesse but the plot more than made up for it. I cannot wait to start the 2nd one!
I was given an arc for this book. I went thru a slump right before opening it's pages. I needed something new that wasn't overdone and overhyped. This ticked all those boxes and I'm just so grateful.
Overall an enjoyable read! The story is creative and the characters are interesting. The progression of the story was a little quick and I felt things came a little too easily for the main character. Excited to see the growth as the story continues.
Loved. This was such a fun book and I'll be diving into the 2nd one immediately. The story was interesting and the different imaging of fantasy creatures I'm used to was a wonderful touch. Fuck you, Alexei! Just shy of 5 stars due to the redundancy of clothes and clothes shopping.

This was a captivating fantasy novel that hooked me from the very beginning! The well-developed characters and fun storyline made for an engaging read that was so hard to put down.
