Describes the helpful work of Harriet Tubman in aiding slaves to flee the South, in assisting the Union army during the Civil War, and in establishing homes for the old and needy after the war.
This is probably one of the first books I remember reading and a have recalled its lessons throughout my life. Would love to own the set. But had a huge impact on my life and my brothers as well.
I really think more kids should read this series. There's a lot of fluff out there, but this kind of series drives home both history and values in one shot. I definitely remember Harriett Tubman's contribution to the underground railroad even long after reading this book. It reinforced everything I had to memorize in American History. This series is part of the reason, I have random anecdotals and a long memory for stuff colleagues have long forgotten throughout the years.
This a great book and learning tool. I love the value time books and how reader friendly they are for all ages. They make learning fun and in this edition teach all about a special woman in history in a time when slavery was the normal thing and how people fought for their life and their freedom. Harriet Tubman was ahead of her time showing women could be strong in the face of adversary.
I grew up in Apartheid South Africa. I found this book in the library when I was 6 years old. It taught me about equality. I will always remember this tale with a great deal of affection & gratitude. The lesson learnt here enabled me on my way through life.
We read this as part of a study during Black History month. I loved this book. We learned more about Harriet Tubman. I honestly only knew about the Underground Railroad work she did. My daughter loved the pictures. We are going on a search of more of these books in this series.
This book is for a little bit older children. it was hard for my five and six-year-old to understand slavery so it made the book more difficult to follow; but for those who understand slavery, it is a great introduction to how awesome Harriet Tubman was in playing vital role in that era.
My favorite book of the series. Having watched the movie "Glory" several times about the Massachusetts 54th Regiment, the first all African-American regiment of the Civil War, I had absolutely no idea that Harriet Tubman was a part of the regiment and helped them in various ways, including planning and leading an operation to save 750 slaves. Such a great story!
What an amazing hero Harriet Tubman was. And what an amazing series Ann Donegan Johnson has written. Two hymns are mentioned at the end of the book: "Go Down, Moses" and "I got a Robe", it's so easy YouTube those songs for your child to listen to. Highly Recommended!
