It is what our world fell into hundreds of years ago. Murder on the street. Parents abusing their children. Rape. Drugs. Guns. The streets ran red.
It all culminated into the Last War—the war that almost ended the human species. Bombs. Killings. Cyber attacks. You name it, they tried it.
Once the smoke lifted, less than a quarter of the population had survived. They knew that the only way that they would survive would be peace. Not just between countries, but between one another. Crime could no longer happen, but telling a killer not to kill, a torturer not to torture? It just makes them want to do it more.
So it was decided. One night of the year, from dusk until dawn, nothing is illegal. And what better night than Halloween? All Hallows Eve? Samhain? Our Mayhem.
It has worked for us for hundreds of years, but because we are only human—some people just cannot accept that what they have is enough. So they break our laws.
Not to worry because I'm keeping tabs and come Mayhem, they'll be meeting Mayhem's Mistress. Mistress Mayhem is a dark dystopian why choose romance, meaning that the heroine will have multiple love interests that she will not be choosing between. This book is intended for readers 18+ due to language and content.
This book was extremely fun to read. I love revenge stories. This kind, where the revenge wasn't on the love interests, was even better than most I've read. The support they gave her was everything! My only confusion was with the world its self. It had changed but seemed the same as well, probably because of the war, but I kept forgetting they were in the future. However, I loved the new tech and drugs she used. It would make life so much easier if I had all of her trinkets. Anyways back to the story, I loved the dark and crazy side of the characters. I wished I could have seen it more, especially, with the men, but it was sprinkled in enough to make me happy. Other than that, I freaking loved this book. I recommend you give it a try, but check the trigger warning. I didn't think it was that dark, but I'm kind of messed up in the head. 😉
"Mistress Mayhem" is a dark RH standalone, perfect for anyone looking for a Halloween-type story filled with blood and revenge. When this story takes place, the world has changed and Halloween, now called Mayhem, is the time of year where the bad guys come out to play... But it also becomes the perfect time for a young woman to take revenge on those who didn't respect the rules in the past.
I absolutely love the way the author introduced the characters in this story, and shows readers what happened to lead Sage to become Mistress Mayhem. The possible triggers are respectfully explained, and nothing in this story is too much. For me, it was the perfect way a triggering event is written; necessary to explain the rest of the story, and without any extra drama. It helped to understand Sage better, and get truly emerged into the story from the start. The main part of the story that follows: the revenge, the hunt, but also reconnecting with her past was absolutely great, and a perfect Halloween-story.
The only reason why I took away half a star, was that the wrap-up after Mayhem took a little long for me. I understand the concept of an epilogue at the end of a standalone, but I honestly don't like it when they take too long, and for me part of the ending felt unnecessary. But like I said: the main part of the story was worth five stars, and I guess you can always stop at the end of that.
All I can say is WOW! If you want a dark read, this one has it all. Avery/Sage is a powerful FMC who endures unimaginable things outside of the set parameters of Mayhem. She can survive what the sick men had planned and return ten years later to exact her revenge on them. She wasn't expecting to find the three men, Fox, Austin, and Cooper, at her party where she was planning her revenge as Mistress Mayhem. Fate has hired them to do the same job she had intended. This story is not for the faint of heart. Heed the trigger warnings. I loved that the author reminded the reader before the chapter once again of the triggering event. This book is well written, and I loved the premise of peace throughout the year and given one night to take out all anger with no repercussions, not that it's a viable solution because people always find a workaround. But I credit the author for coming up with this crazy idea of a night amnesty. If you don't have triggers, this is the book for you.
I do not even know where to begin my review for Mistress Mayhem by Miranda May. First thing I do want to say is please, please be sure to pay close attention to the trigger warnings. That being said, this is The Best revenge, why choose book I have ever read. I went through all of the feels while reading. At times I was angry, other times I cried, I cheered and got very stabby. Avery's life is changed in the worst way, but she survives and transforms herself into Sage, aka, Mistress Mayhem. She seeks revenge towards those who wronged her and gets her life back in the best way. Having 3 of her best friends, and secret loves, Cooper, Fox and Austin back in her life is just icing on the revenge cake. There is danger, suspense, love and loss and so much more in Mistress Mayhem. Once you pick it up it is going to suck you in. miranda-may
If you're in the mood for a dark dystopian romance then this is the book for you. It's set in the year 2284/85. After the last war things have changed. All illegal activity is punished by unaliving, unless it is Mayhem, also known as Halloween, in which all activity is fair game. Ten years prior avery and her friend were taken well before Mayhem began and were "trained" in horrible ways. Now she has come to take her revenge and is known as mistress Mayhem. Not only is sage (avery) an incredibly strong fmc, she also gets to reunite with her lost loves. Fox, Cooper and Austin have all loved her since they were kids and now that they've found her, they have no intention of letting her go again. I loved the spice in this one. The scenes were so hot and I love how unhinged they all are, yet they're perfect for each other. This was an epic tale and perfect for those who love the darker side of things and love delving into the minds of the morally Grey.
Just finished this story, the first I’ve read by Miranda May & it has a lot going on. While I enjoyed the world setting (purge style) all the crime, the unhinged slightly psycho characters, the action, spice & just everything else going on within it, it was heavily fast paced. A lot was happening at any given moment but it was sped through. Almost as if it was rushed & I know some people prefer that type of book/writing style. But it wasn’t for me. The characters were good, I think they could have been built up a bit more personality wise. They seemed unfinished to me. One thing that isn’t just my personal opinion though and I wish she or one of her beta/arc readers would’ve caught is the guards names who get axed in the story, their names change from when she comes across them to when she announces it to her other employees. Even with all that going on I gave it 4 stars bc I did like the idea of the story. I’m hoping future books have a less rushed feeling to them & character names are kept straight.
When your internet is down, but you have a book downloaded ready to go, make it Mistress Mayhem. While there are extremely dark topics discussed and experienced in this book, Miranda May wrote them with a finesse that speaks to her ability as a writer and a master at her craft. The ability to seek vengeance and reek mayhem unchecked and unapologetically brutal is absolutely brilliant. Throw in three gorgeous love interests, and handful of steamy interludes and you have a recipe for an amazing story. I loved the strength in Sage as well as the unconditional love and support of her men, her family and her little team of psychcos which is what we all need in life. I am so glad I had this book downloaded ready to read when I lost internet, otherwise Mayhem may have ensued!
Please make sure you check out the TW before reading as this will not a story for everyone.
We thought that we found a solution to all the crime / murder and that was to use one day a year to allow people to do whatever they wanted and then when the sirens sounded again that was the end of that day and that day was all hallows eve “Mayhem”. I thought this was the answer then I realised things weren’t quite what they seemed, crimes still continued but everything was hush hush and I escaped my captures and spent the last 10 years becoming what I had to become and that was Mistress Mayhem - because if you are guilty of committing crimes then on Mayhem I am coming for you. I am stronger I am a fighter and I don’t care what I have to do to make you pay so you better be careful.
This story was just amazing, and I honestly could not put it down. I love how Avery becomes a whole new persona Sage and in doing so becomes Mistress Mayhem with a loyal following of employees willing to stand with her as she does what she does best and that is to get her revenge on those that cost her everything ten years ago. In looking to get her revenge she thrust into the sights of the three men who she walked away from Austin, Cooper and Fox. These three have changed from the boys she once knew, they are there to take out targets, little do these four know that their paths this night are going to become intertwined in revenge and what else is served best with revenge - lust and love.
This story will go through a range of emotions, but it delves in deep to show the strength and determination that Avery/ Sage develops to do what she needs to do and at the same time we are taking on rollercoaster of revenge, lust and love.
You may think you know how this story goes but you don’t but what Miranda does is pulls you into the depths of the pages that sucks you in wanting more and more.
Read the trigger warnings. The author lists them, so you know what you are getting into. The book follows Avery. This book is set in a dystopian world where the government allows people to reek mayhem for one night. One night where every crime is legal. Avery and her best friend Charlotte are taken after leaving the movie theater. This shatters the world Avery thought she knew to be true that the world was safe expect for one night of the year. Avery faces atrocities during her time taken. After deceiving her captors and managing to escape, Avery is no longer Avery. She transform into Sage. In her quest for revenge and process of healing from her trauma, she pushed away everyone who cared about her including her other three friends, Cooper, Fox, and Austin. On the night she plans to exact her revenge, she comes face to face with the trio who she pushed away. “Mistress Mayhem” is a great book with a well developed FMC. Sage is smart and calculating. She handles each curve ball that thrown at her well. I loved the book’s sense of urgency as Sage only has one shot to get revenge on all the men who hurt her and her friend Charlotte. We don’t see much of Charlotte, but her memory helps move the plot forward and sets the another level motivation for Sage to enact revenge on her tormentors. The world building is very similar to the ‘Purge’, but I like how the book has its own twist on it. The world building gives another layer to Avery’s shock after being taken. For me, I was more focused on the plot rather than Sage’s relationship with our trio. Sage really took the cake and shined throughout the book.
Mistress Mayhem by Miranda May.. all I have to say is welcome to the dark romance side of things! Where we have more fun and can release our inner darkness. Seriously loved this book! It is a dark romance stand-alone but hot dang! It is a beautiful work of dark, twisted art. Miranda gave us a brilliant combination of reverse harem and the purge with a lovely side of strong FMC. This book takes place in a world where everything has changed and Halloween is now referred to as Mayhem, this is a time of the year where all the bad people come out to play. For our girl, Avery/Sage this year is the perfect time to get her revenge on those who did not respect the rules put into place in the past. Fair warning, there are trigger warnings but Miranda does remind the reader before the chapter begins of the triggering event. The way that the triggers were explained was respectful and as the event was happening, I felt it was not too much for myself and that it explains beautifully why Sage is the way she is. This helped me understand the FMC better. Personally, this is a perfect dark Halloween read. One that will suck you right in from the beginning. Highly recommend Mistress Mayhem.
So, first….TRIGGER WARNINGS….make sure you pay attention & heed all of them. If none of them are an issue though, you are in for an amazing story. I’m not gonna lie, I’m not a horror movie/book kind of girl, but I am a Miranda fan, & I trust her writing skills. As usual, she did not disappoint me! This is definitely a dark second chance romance that will give you Purge vibes (I haven’t seen the movie, but I know about the premise lol). Sage is a strong FMC who has endured so much, but right as her revenge is at hand, 3 men from her past find their way back into her life. This story just goes to show that there is someone for everyone out there, no matter how psychopathic you may be 👀🫣😈 When your crazy meets their crazy, then be prepared for the beautiful, messy, passionate chaos that is bound to come to life 🔥 If you love dark horror-type romance (especially with a Halloween twist), are a fan of why choose love, and are ok with the TW, then read this NOW! 🖤🔪🩸
First, and foremost, be ready for quite the ride. That said, this is a dark romance, that means triggers, some are rough for those that expecting them, so read the warnings. Your mental health is more important than any book.
Okay, y'all!!! Did you like the Purge movies? Do you have dystopian themes? How about some good 'ole Why choose/RH?? Well welcome to Mayhem, the one day where all illegal activities can happen, one night, no holds bar, on HALLOWEEN!
This book was fantastic, yes, some things were rough for the FMC, but you need to go through fire sometimes to find your HEA. The Mistress is back and it's time for her to get her deserved revenge, tho she doesn't know she might get some other unexpectant things.
I loved Avery/Sage, she's strong, real, and loyal. Who doesn't want that in their friend/love/forever partner? Fox, Cooper, and Austin.... hot tamale' train!! The paths these four travel is hard, long, but it brings them all to where they needed to be.
I can't say enough, if you didn't already figure it out, you MUST read this book!!! now.... go... <3
Mistress Mayhem is suspenseful, why choose romance and is written by Miranda May.
💜 strong FMC 💜 found family 💜 recovery 💜 why choose 💜 🌶🌶🌶🌶 spicy spice
Avery wakes up confused as slightly groggy. Looking around, she’s in a dark room and is chained. She realizes she has no clue where she is, but her friend starts talking next to her. At least they have each other and can try to get through this together. What happens next changes the course of her life. She just holds on to memories of her friend and the three boys they hung out with. What will her life look like? Will she ever find the love that she had for the boys again?
This story took me on one heck of a rollercoaster. I kept being pulled into the storyline trying to figure out what was going to happen next. There are a lot of moving parts within the story and I loved every minute of it. This a perfect book to read if you love suspenseful books.
This was my first time reading a book by Miranda May & I really loved it!!! It is a Dark Dystopian Romance, that does have strong themes so I HIGHLY recommend checking out the trigger warnings before reading this book!!!
Rated: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice: 🌶🌶🌶.5
To help civilization reform after the Last War, it was decided that no crime was to be committed except for one day a year - Halloween also known as their Mayhem.
Sage had been kidnapped & assaulted 10 years ago & has returned to have her revenge against those who were responsible.
I love the tough FMC that Sage is!!! I particularly loved that she didn't melt & give into the men from her childhood once she is reunited with them. She is the definition of a boss lady!!! I also love the relationship that she has with her parents, they were great side characters.
Some of the themes/tropes in this book are:
*First Love *Assaults *Kidnapping *Unaliving *Revenge *Why Choose
I'd wanted to read one of Miranda May's books for a long time before I found Mistress Mayhem while searching for Halloween-themed books, and I'm so glad that this is the first of her books I've read. Dark romance? Check. Why choose romance? Check. Halloween themes? Check. Original story? Check. Interesting characters? Check. Fast, easy read? Check. This book delivers!
Following hardened and resilient Sage as she reconnects with her teenage crushes and avenges those who have wronged her is so much fun! I love how soft she is with Austin, Cooper, and Fox without losing her strength and stubbornness, and I love how devoted these three different but lovable men are to her and their shared vendetta.
I'm a little sad that this book is a standalone because I would like to read more about these characters and their other Mayhems, but I'm excited to read more of Miranda's books in the future.
I know I will be repeating myself but Miranda again showed us she can write anything. This book was, I would say, the darkest yet. There are lots of triggers but as always they are fully detailed in the beginning. I think it’s essential for understanding the story to read some parts of chapter two (you will understand why I’m saying it after you open the book). It was also a perfect second chance romance without the typical drama for second chance romances. I loved that even though the story was about revenge, we got to see the characters healing from the past and got a glimpse of what happened after the revenge was done. I’ve never read anything similar, so points to Miranda for writing something different again. Even though I wish we could get more of the characters, the end was satisfying enough for me to be happy as it is.
***PLEASE CHECK THE TW BEFORE STARTING THIS BOOK. Miranda has been nice enough to put TW on the proper chapters of you may need to skip one for your mental health. With that being said….. OH-EM-GEE this book had me immediately hooked. Sometimes it takes me a little bit to get into a story, but not with this story… I did not sleep last night, and I am not mad about it. This book was everything I needed in a dark romance. I Love Love Love Avery so much. The woman she transforms herself into during her journey is beautiful. And of course I can’t leave out the guys? Who wouldn’t love three dark and depraved men like them…**Swoon** No spoilers but EVERY SINGLE MOMENT of the party was **chef’s kiss** Gotta love The Purge & Ready or Not vibes this book gives me 🖤. I am pretty sure this is a standalone but I would do some shady shit for a part two.
A dark and bloody good time is had during Mayhem. The one night a year anything goes! It’s definitely an interesting subject matter to read about that has been done in movie format before. I love the characters we get to know and how they all work together in the story.
I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend.
TW are no joke, and the first couple of chapters are kind of hard to read. Thankfully the author gives us ample time to decide if we can handle what is about to happen in those chapters, and I was well prepared enough to get through them okay.
I so very appreciate it when an author warns you before the chapters that actually have the hard hitting stuff in them.
I love that this was a standalone that is perfect for the spooky time of year.
This story does contain child abuse off scene due to child trafficking (it is mentioned in a couple chapters). However this book’s main storyline is about one victim’s fight against those who wronged her and how she became Mistress Mayhem. Sage is an amazing character and I love the book as it makes victim’s more than a victim as she is a kickass FMC. She protects those who can’t protect themselves and has the biggest heart! Fox is the absolute cutest ever in his best friend turned lover vibes. Austin is boy next door jock turned lover and Cooper has bad boy vibes down all the way!! Together the four of them build a family in a new world and help protect others in this stabby RH maze of a book! Absolutely amazing book, I would definitely recommend it to everyone!!!
I don't even know where to begin to describe this book! It was so so good.
First and foremost I do want to say to pay very close attention to the content warnings in this book as this is a very dark dystopian romance.
Mistress Mayhem by Mirand May has to be one of the best dark romance, revenge, story I have read. The year is 2285 and all illegal activity is punishable by death unless it is Mayhem, which takes place on October 31 every year since The Last War. Ten years before, Avery and her best friend were kidnapped and "trained". She escaped and is now out for revenge with her 4 friends from childhood, to make the men who kidnapped her pay for what they done.
Its very dark and I love. The spice was immaculate. The characters are a bit unhinged and I loved them all. This book is very well written and is perfect for those who love the darker side of things like I do.
In a new world where crime is only supposed to happy one night a year, Avery is kidnapped and forced to endure something that no one should have to go through.
10 years later, she is back as Sage to exact justice on those that took everything from her. The night is set and everything should go according to plan....until the 3 men that stole her heart all those years ago turn up. Now Sage is faced with facing more than she thought, not only exacting revenge, but also putting her heart back together.
Mistress Mayhem is utterly phenomenal. Cannot say enough good things about this book. It is dark and gory and heart-wrenching, with ALL the spice. Miranda May does an excellent job balancing murder with lust and I could not get enough. Be sure to check the trigger warnings, but definitely worth the read! 20/10 stars
This story was absolutely amazing. It is dark but yet oh so intriguing. Be warned there are possible triggers. However, they are so very tastefully written. This story drew me in and didn’t let go. Avery/Sage is this sweet but strong girl that goes through so much with her friend Charlotte. At the end everything is different for Avery. However, instead of making her weak and broken she only comes out stronger. I love how strong she is. The guys are fantastic as well. You have Cooper, Austin, and Fox. They are so protective but yet know when to let Sage stand on her on two feet. The story is extremely well written and developed. It is definitely a darker story but in the end has an amazing outcome. This is absolutely a must read and definitely doesn’t disappoint.
Miranda May took a little detour into dark romance and lit up the road! Wow!! A fantastic combination of revenge and spice. (Do check TW before reading)
All crime has been forced to cease due to a drop in population apart from one night a year 31st October "Mayhem" where anything is legal (the the movies 'The purge') and there is no support: no police, no ambulances, no hospitals.
Mistress Mayhem had her life turned upside down 10 years ago when she was just 16 and is now back with a whole new persona and a very big grudge against the people who hurt her, and this Mayhem, she will make them pay!
What she doesn't expect is to pick up three unlikely helpers that make Mayhem interesting for her in a whole lot of other ways.
Ooooh the dark creepies from this book are so perfect for October! The first part will rip your heart out of your chest, still beating and stomp on it. Then the second part will fill your heart and soul with satisfaction! Sage/Avery is a character full of darkness, yet also smart, sassy and a soul looking for its mates. The past that she intends to put behind her, is full of horrible and dark things, but its also where she left her heart, as a group of five friends juggled their teenage years. Mistress Mayhem is her perfect outlet. I loved the idea, the world, the characters and the darkness!
Avery’s life changes during the weeks leading up to mayhem. She and her best friend was taken and abused in worst but Avery survives and change her completely. Now she goes by Sage or Mistress Mayhem and this year she will get her revenge on the men who hurt her. But she didn’t expect her guys from her past to be there or help her get her revenge not that she needs them. They will all realize that the love they had for each other is still there. But can they found their way back to each other complete by the end after all they go through. This is incredible book that you don’t want to pass up.
Wow just wow! Miranda May has written another amazing story. I was completely hooked right from the start and couldn't put this book down. This dark and delicious story is a brilliant combination of The Purge and WhyChoose. Avery/Sage is such a strong FMC. She survives a terribly traumatic event and plans her revenge. Her three guys are hired to take out the same men she wants revenge on. These four steam up the pages. This book is very dark so please head all trigger warnings. I can't wait to read what's next from Miranda May.
Avery and Charlotte go through a very traumatic situation at the start of this book, that goes on to shape who Avery/Sage becomes as she grows up and tries to get over what has happened. When it is finally time for revenge she runs back in to her old friends, Cooper, Fox and Austin. I love the way they fall back into their relationships from earlier in life and trust each other implicitly. I loved how Sage is so confident and knows what she wants. The spice in this story is hot! But be warned of the dark aspects throughout, particularly early on. Another book I loved by this author.
Miranda May’s most recent novel is a dark why choose romance that has a rather unique storyline. This story runs the gambit of emotions from A to Z that tears at your heartstrings. Sage, the main female character, is one strong, tough, bad woman. There’s plenty of exciting adventure, mystery, suspense, steamy situations and unexpected twists and turns that’ll keep you gripping the edge of your seat until the very end. I love this author’s writing and can’t wait to see what she has planned next. Highly recommended and definitely a MUST read!
I loved this book. All crime is legal on Mayhem (formerly Halloween) I am always up for a good revenge plot and this book takes legalized murder to a whole new level. I really like the level of planning Sage puts into her work, which happens to be killing people who commit atrocities outside of Mayhem. She built this persona and executed these bad people all to prepare herself to bring down the 4 men responsible for her kidnapping and the death of her best friend. The book was fast-paced and engaging. I really liked the 3 guys, Austin was my favorite.
