Inger Stein is no stranger to heartbreak and struggle, but when a trio of battered resistance fighters seek refuge at her door, her world is destined to change again forever. Can she convince her town that the sacrifice they ask is worth the hope they offer? Or will resentment and suspicion snuff out the country's chance for freedom?
A short story, previously published as part of Hope
with Scraps and Sketches, a collection of short short stories tracing the progress of the resistance through the eyes of each of the Quiet Valor heroines
An avid reader and incurable story-spinner, Angie Thompson also enjoys volunteering in her church’s children’s program and starting (but not always finishing) various kinds of craft projects. She currently lives in central Virginia near most of her incredible family, including two parents, six brothers, one sister, and six siblings-in-law—plus four nieces, ten nephews, and several assorted pets!

5 stars. We already know I adore this series and the characters. Of course I loved this book. Very much.
A Man & a Brother (previously published in Hope) Ahh, another lovely addition to the Quiet Valor books! This one comes right after “A Threat & a Promise” and it was delightful. Inger was a wonderful woman; and I liked Althur; and I enjoyed seeing Eben & Rolfe! ;) ;) And there was such a lovely message too. <3
“Hold to your petty defiance if you will, and give up everything you claim to love. Althur and I choose hope—the hope Kord held to—the hope that sees beyond what is to what might be, if we don’t lose heart.
Blenwyn This bit of story, set during Jaelyn’s marriage, just about made me cry. Blenwyn is amazing. And the message is so good… especially to a MCK. <3
“You can’t leave her behind, my darling girl. She shines in your face and speaks in your voice and lingers in the touch of your hand. If your children never speak a word of Corwysh, they’ll still carry her heritage. And if you hold her in your heart, you can’t lose her, no matter where you go.”
Jaelyn OH MY HEART I loved this so so much. A soldier’s orphan? Struggling to care for him and his sick mother? Bring in all the victorian feels. And Jaelyn standing up for him. YES, YES, YES. It’s so sweet and heart-tugging. <33
My husband had been one of that reviled horde mere months ago, and I knew well how warm a heart could beat beneath a gruff mask and an imposing black uniform.
Inger Now we’re getting to the people I don’t know—yet. I can’t wait. This little story about war and PTSD and the cost of freedom is poignant. It’s so tiny but so good.
EDIT: I just realized I do, in fact, know Inger and Althur. 🤦🏻♀️ Happy to meet them again, and I look forwards to knowing them better.
“What future is there for us? … If Gerhard crushes the resistance, we die. We’ve all accepted that. But if they win? Will the council try to punish those who once stood with him? Will our neighbors turn their backs whenever we walk by? Will anyone—anyone but a few—even try to look past what we once were to see what we might be again?” “When you found hope again, Althur, what was it for? That Gerhard could be defeated? Or more? That there could be a future—a real future—for all of us? Can you still believe that?”
Emmalie YES, I KNOW EM AND I LOVE HER. Ugh, this is sooo good. E + L are the cutest ever. And this little scene of their courtship is adorbs.
“We’d both rather have you—in any condition—always.” “I’ll hold you to that the first time my muddy boots soil the parlor carpets.”
Zarah Rather different from the others—it’s much more peaceful, with a sort of country thanksgiving feel to it. But it’s really cute and I love how restful it is. I gotta get to know these people!
“It’s no use for us to borrow trouble for tomorrow. Today, there is peace. And if not our victory, it can still be our celebration.
Margaretta Once again someone new, and I love her story. Of course, it’s dramatic and heartbreaking. Henrik is super sweet, and I really need more about these two!!
“I can’t give you your holiday, but I can give you a moment.”
So yes. It’s a delightful little collection and it’s got me whetted up for but simultaneously satisfied until the next QV book. <3
*I received a complimentary copy of this book for promotional purposes. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.*
I enjoyed this sweet little collection of short stories, reconnecting with old characters and meeting new ones. As always, the characters are so loveable, and the stories so heartwarming and hopeful. Sometimes I wanted to know a little more, but that's the way it always is with short stories.
I loved this addition to the Quiet Valor series! As always, Angie Thompson delivers quite the punch, even within such a short story. I also loved the sketches at the end! I can't wait to read more of these new characters. <3
