I really enjoyed this book despite the fact that it didn't really teach me anything new.
It is written for an ignorant but intelligent reader and introduces the concept of trick taking, gradually building up to more and more complex games. At each stage a smattering of card reading and tactics is included. There is little repetition and it all seems very satisfying. A variety of other kinds of card games are introduced in the last third of the book.
The book is not particularly comprehensive and works less well as a reference book, but that's not really the point. It's a great introduction to card games, properly explained.

Okay, but British ....

Most of the rules and game variations are completely different from the way I was taught to play, especially Rummy.

This is a book that does what the cover says. And in a not too verbose way.
