This is a primary book. I selected it as a independent read for Natalie since it is recommended for ages 5-9 years old.

I chose this book simply because of Natalie’s love of animals, especially giraffes. This book gives information about different animals, including giraffes, and presents the information in a fun way for a second grader with fold-outs. Natalie can learn about where these animals live, view pictures, and read captions of information about each animal.

I would hook Natalie by saying, “I know how much you like giraffes! This book has great pictures and information about giraffes and a lot of other animals!”

This book was one of the kids favorites. The pictures are really big because the pages are flaps that fold out.
Animals: elephant, giraffe, giant panda, hippo, blue whale, polar bear, desert camel

A very high-interest nonfiction animal book for elementary readers. I loved the use of nonfiction text features. Each animal had a map, scale drawing, last of statistics, and labels. Many have two column comparison charts, too. I also loved the fold-out format with each animal opening up to reveal multiple pages of well-organized information.

I had two disappointments, though. First, I wish the information had been about meatier. Second, I really hated the images of each animal. It was hard to tell if they were digital or photos of zoo-like sculptures, but they definitely weren't photos of ACTUAL animals.
