An American Tale, but one with a twist! Meet Prez Rickard, elected to the office of the Presidency in 1972! But how exactly does his victory tie into the plans of the mysterious Boss Smiley? "World's End" part 4.
His mother understood that names have power. Names do not define us, but they influence us for good or ill, help to shape and form us. Perhaps she saw a little of the future that day, perhaps she was merely inspired by a higher power. And she named her newborn ... Prez -- it's short for president.
Thus begins the tale of the most idealistic, even perfect President there has ever been. A tale of optimism, success, temptation and blackmail. Loved it.
Very happy to come back to the mainstream plots surrounding Dream and his family members. Listened to the audio-experience Audible Act 3 which encompasses Volumes 7-8 (Brief Lives and Worlds' End)[1], the Sandman Special #1, and other short stories from Vertigo: Winter's Edge #1 & #3 and Vertigo Preview #1.
Looking forward to more backstories and "day in the lives" for other family members such as Desire, and Despair as we've seen with Dream and Death.
I find that, when it comes to The Sandman, the real story, where depth and true, pure storytelling takes place, is with its more off the beaten path type of stories. The issues between the main story, the stuff that people might want to quickly flip through in order to get back on track with the main story.
This feels like what The Sandman really is about, when you give it your undivided attention.
Definitely my favourite of the World's End's tales. Prez Rickard is one of the few characters I have seen in this series that is just conpletely earnest - admit it, there is something about a hero that is just simple. It is why we love Superman. Why Pratchettarians will love Captain Carrot. Because cynicism is just the otherside of that coin of childlike faith in the good and the true that we all have...
Also, loving Death's hair in this issue. It is a great look. Keep it.
