Not the greatest Spidey story ever told, but it’s still Spidey, and McFarlane’s art is solid throughout (except for drawing ladies’ faces, which still remains, well, sketchy). So, better than a bucket of earwax for sure.

A year's worth of Todd McFarlane drawn Spider-Man stories. Turns out at one point Todd McFarlane could actually meet a deadline. He draws 14 of the 15 regular issues in the book, with Erik Larsen filling in in the remaining issue. McFarlane has been more influential on Spider-Man than any other artist since John Romita Sr. He was the first to draw Spidey as the bendy acrobat that is now the norm for the character. He does draw MJ as a pinup queen though, always showing her in skimpy underwear or workout outfits. Michelinie brings in a lot of classic Spider-Man villains during this run such as Scorpion, Venom, Mysterio, Hobgoblin, and the Green Goblin. Also included is a surprisingly good annual drawn by Rob Liefeld as part of the Atlantis Attacks crossover and a one shot by Gerry Conway recapping Peter and Mary Jane's history.

This giant collection has some amazing McFarlane art and an old school Mark Bagley, who later did a historic spidey run with Bendis. This is not a connected story, but a collection. There are several stories in here, some that could have been uncollected. It is rife with the old style say everything and fill every panel with words. MJ and Peter’s relationship and financial troubles are in full swing here, which makes these stories so dynamic. And the bad guys abound.

I read this as part of my Venom read-through. Like many of these early volumes, I'm getting over a dozen issues of story, where Venom usually shows up for one or two issues. But it's still a fun read.

This is the last gasp of the Spider-80s. I mentioned to a coworker how it's really fun watching the writing evolve from the ashes of the Bronze Age into more teleplay-like plotting and dialogue. Michelinie throws all sorts of characters and villains at the wall in this run, and a few of them stick. There's the title storyline where Spidey, Captain America, Paladin, and Silver Sable have to stop an assassination, the weird Atlantis Attack crossover that in no way reminds me of The Atlantis Attacks storyline, the Inferno saga where an X-Men villain turns New York into a hellish realm, and a primer rehashing of Peter and MJ's relationship origins. It's a lot to take in, and while the writing is consistent, the quality of the plots vary wildly.

The actual Venom issues are pretty good. This is his second real battle with Spider-Man, and while learn virtually nothing new about Venom, it's still a fun series of action sequences with very late 80s zingers, and a ton of behind the scenes plots with MJ having her own enemy that gets them kicked out of their new condo, Peter repairing his relationship with Aunt May and doing favors for her boyfriend Nathan, and lots lots more.

It's a great late 80s Spider-book, but if you're just trying to read through Venom, you can skip these Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collections, and pick up the Venom Epic Collection Vol. 1: Symbiosis instead.

I rarely mention art unless it's awful or fantastic, as I'm more of a story person. The art in this book is clear, classic, and easy to follow, but I did find myself reacting negatively to McFarlane's style in this collection. I liked it in the original Venom Epic Collection, but the faces felt huge for much of this volume, and the anatomy was off enough that I noticed, which is something that rarely happens to me outside of the late 80s/early 90s future Image Comics founders era of Marvel books. It unsettled me here.

Rating this album with 3 stars would break the heart of 7-8 year old me :( This Todd McFarlene's run defined Spider-man for me (this + Torment). I was completely captivated by his imagery - dynamic poses, weirdly shaped faces, and amazing details. It has changed how Spider-man was drawn forever. After all these years, the art still looks great but the rest is not as impressive.

The first part of this album, Inferno crossover, illustrated by McFarlane takes my nostalgia score to the max. By itself, it deserves 4 stars and finishes with the 2nd coming of Venom which was one of my favorite issues. The only difference is that in the early 90. Poland it was printed on the cheapest paper and all colors looked like different shades of gray ;) Here, the colors are crisp and vibrant, making it all look phenomenal. The first ~200 pages were pure joy for me, bringing me back to the best moments of my childhood. The only problem is that the context of the whole Inferno is missing, as it was more X-men storyline than Spidey, so there is no explanation nor conclusion to the strange events happening in NYC.

The next part of the album consists of random stories out of context + Silver Sable storyline, which is repetitive and rather anticlimactic. Even though the art is mostly solid here, I can't connect with the story. There is almost no Peter Parker here and this makes half of the protagonist missing. This brings my final score down.

This collection ends with the graphical novel Parallel Lives, released in Poland as the first Spider-man special issue. Here, it doesn't feel so remarkable. It's just a retelling of an origin story we already know... because there is a second one earlier on in this album. It's not bad, not great either, but somehow IMHO doesn't fit very well with the rest.

The first half of this book is solid, the second one is "meh". It made me travel 30 years back in time and it was an amazing journey. However, I don't feel like doing it again anytime soon. It's not a material that stands on its own, even though I respect McFarlane's illustrations a lot.

No i do zabawy dołączy sam Kapitan Ameryka...

No geral, eu achei bem divertido.

311 ★★

312 ★★★
Inferno. Green Goblin vs Hobgoblin. (Continued from Spectacular 146 & Web 47)

313 ★★★
Inferno is affecting the Lizard.

314 ★★
Christmas time. The Parker's are evicted and MJ won't get her money back anytime soon.

315 ★★★★
A quick fight with Hydroman. Venom escapes prison. Peter catches Nathan stealing from Aunt May. (Jeez I hate that guy!)

316 ★★★
Venom is back in NY and looking for Spidey. Peter's having money troubles and MJ can't get a modeling job. Black Cat runs into Venom.

317 ★★★
Eddie Brock shows up at Aunt May's. He wants a showdown with Peter.

318-319 ★★★
Scorpion. Jameson has evidently been replaced by the Chameleon. Scorpion double crosses his new boss who sends Rhino and Backlash after him. Cesar is causing trouble for MJ.

320-225 ★★★
Assassination Nation 6 part.
Sable heard rumors of a conspiracy against her king and followed her suspect to the US who was arranging a hideout for an assassin. Spidey teams up with Paladin to help Sable, then Captain America joins in Part 4. Peter heard a phone call and hears 6 months to live and thinks it's May, but it's Nathan. And they help Harry move.

McFarlane is good at drawing Spider-Man, Venom and… nope, that’s about it. He characters are mostly grotesque, an amateurish aping of Art Adams’ style that really would have benefitted from someone else inking his lines. His storytelling isn’t up to much either. It frequently feels like Michelinie is having to wrestle the art back towards a coherent story in the scripting because McFarlane will often just draw what he thinks looks cool as piece of art rather than a page that flows as a story.
Not that Michelinie’s plots here are that great either. There’s nothing awful (beyond an annual story that’s part of a wider cross-over and features one real stinker of a horribly tone deaf remark for She-Hulk) but they’re not top tier Spider-Man fare. Possibly the most interesting element is what’s not being told here, the clear opportunity and groundwork for a drug abuse story for Mary Jane, which the book just seems slightly too scared to go for.

A collection from the 90's - I read most of these during their first run but it's always nice to head back in time for some classic Spider-Man and with the exception of the Assassin Nation Plot, this was amazing, great storytelling, great villians but I am knocking it down a star for the art. Most of the art was done by McFarlane and I know it's sacrilegious not to bow down to McFarlane so let me explain ~ any one frame or any one cover is a work of art, but put them all together on a page or an entire comic and it's cluttered and busy and does not flow smoothly. Later in his career I think he figures it out but during this run the art is jarring. But all told, this was a really good collection.

After feeling underwhelmed with the last volume, I was kind of dreading this one. But about halfway through I realized the only thing I like about this era of Spidey is McFarlane’s weird art - and that’s okay! These comics are a great example of stories where I really don’t like the writing, and I can still find some fun in other aspects. So it’s definitely a mixed bag for me and I think a more current run of Spider-Man will just suit me better next time.

McFarlane at the top our his game

Venom is back, and McFarlane's drawing him! What could be better?
This collection starts with Inferno, has several other stories, including Assassin Nation and finishes out McFarlane's run on ASM.
The OGN Parallel Lives completes the collection, which is a depressing retelling of Spidey and MJ's origins.

Best of the Michelinie run so far in these epics. He and McFarlane found their voice and style in this volume and were telling good stories consistently.
Two versions of spidermans origins were unnecessary in this epic though.

solid book overall with great writing and classic stuff on the art side of things. the graphic novel at the end was a big standout and I wish it was longer and continued more of the history but other than that the book was good on the whole.

This collection is great, but the story I surprisingly enjoyed most in it is the “Peter Parker/Mary Jane: Parallel Lives” graphic novel at the end. Just a real treat to read that reminds you of why Peter and MJ are so great together.

Michelinie’s writing is still pretty hit-or-miss for me; it really seems to depend on the villain. His Mysterio and Venom are fun, but Lizard and Scorpion feel like total retreads. Assassin Nation vacillates wildly between interesting and dull.

The real consistent superstar here is McFarlane’s art. It carries even the weak stories. Liefeld, on the other hand, really does not and easily manages to be the absolute low point of this whole volume.

Parallel Lives manages to make up for most low points here, though. It’s a classic.
