But on bloody ground where, without motive or warning, an Indian raiding party has set upon defenseless victims, things are not what they seem. Jory Sherman was born in Minnesota and grew up in West Texas, Louisiana, and Colorado. He was a magazine editor for a time and had some of his work published, including some poetry, short stories and articles. Sherman had a friend who owned a publishing company and asked him to write a novel for the company. From that offer came five more novels, all written in one year. He wrote the supernatural mystery series, "Chill," which was somewhat revolutionary for the times, but which earned him an eight book contract. He then came up with the idea for "Rivers West," a series which had each book written by a different western author. Then came the "Baron Saga," the first of which was "Grass Kingdom" which earned Sherman a nomination for the Pulitzer Prize in Letters. Sherman has also won the Spur Award for his contribution to Western Literature.

Nothing's better than a book plucked right out of your library. I was glad to see 'Ghost Warrior' re-released in Dec of 2018, of the Shadow Rider trilogy, this one was the hardest to find by me, the two major chains ordered 2 copies to 4 copies and wen they sold out you missed out.

Jory Sherman's one of my favorite Western authors, could he ever put you into the wild and wooly old west with his writing. Never read anything by him, were he didn't have it masterfully paced, you were never bored, typically themed good verse evil and the good guys/gals always won.

Probably the most interesting thing about his writing is that he, never fully described his characters details, but he portrayed his Western settings in great detail and yet it never tarnished his stories.

With 'Ghost Warrior' it's set around Santa Fe, in new Mexico territor, it finds Zak Cody, aka 'Shadow Rider' sent to investigate a brewing rebellion, involving the Navajo tribe and a warrior using the name of a fallen legendary warrior. You'll have to read it to know what happens.

Really the only flaw, is that the author easily could have written it longer or at least the ending of the book added a few more pages.

Definitely if you ever want to try a Western, then Jory Sherman's one of the best ones to hook you into liking Westerns and if you already a fan, then you know what a legend he is in the genre already.

For my first western read, not bad.

The beginning of the story had me hooked. A small yet important predicament to begin the conflict of the story.

I haven’t read the previous books of this series, but the way this story is structured doesn’t need you to understand previous books.

The only thing that confused me was the utter lack of character exposition. I thought that maybe the characters were in previous books, but they all seemed to be new from what I could tell. But the author fails to give enough time for description on who the protagonist is talking too. It especially doesn’t help when there is so many names being thrown around. I can’t tell who is who.

The detail of nature and the land of this western landscape is phenomenal. When the protagonist is searching for an enemy, the time and care put into the details makes it feel almost real.

I loved the first 150 pages of this book. Evenly paced with rising tension each chapter. The story of an unseen threat that grows as the story continues keeps the reader guessing what will happen and who the enemy will be. It felt like a calm western until the very ending of the book.

The killing was cool - don’t get me wrong - shadow rider sneaking through the dark and shanking people is cool as duck. Especially with little quotes before they die.

But really? This whole book lead to a big fight between the army, Indians, and Mexicans just for them to get stabbed in the night?! The setup for the final fight was quick and rushed. Leaving me unsatisfied and forcing the end of the book down my throat. The enemies were basically nobody!

All was good until after shadow rider fucked the broad. I should have quit reading after that 😂

Good plot and not too bad at first but it seemed so fake. I was given a hint of what was in store for my reading when the author made up a very stupid theory about the origen of the word GRINGO. Down hill from there.

Ran across this in a Dollar store. Had never heard of the author and westerns are one of my favorite genres. I found this book to be well constructed and entertaining. It seems Mr. Sherman has been prolific and I look forward to reading more of his books.

The Navajo do not name their kids after the dead, nor do they speak their name. But a warrior long dead is back, or so it seems. Narona is causing havoc in the New Mexico territory, causing Zac Cody to investigate and terminate the problem.
