The year is 2032 and Eva, a brilliant but angst-ridden 18-year-old, is frustrated by the insanity she sees everywhere she turns. Incivility in Politics. Gun violence. Climate change. Wars. Pollution. Greed. Power. Injustice. It all seems too much for her, and she feels powerless to make a difference.

Through a lucky set of circumstances, she finds herself joining her grandmother, an award-winning scientist, on board the New Eden, a combination residential cruise ship and floating science center, shrouded in mystery. She spends the summer of her dreams immersed in mind-boggling scientific breakthroughs that she feels could save humanity. Then just as Eva starts to believe in her ability to help heal the planet, her world is turned upside down—literally and figuratively.

Eva and the New Eden community have to learn to understand and navigate the new world in which they find themselves. Is it the end of humanity? Or a new beginning?

Arc is the story of a troubled world, as told by Eva, the young adult protagonist. On the New Eden, a mysterious science vessel, Eva comes to terms with the worst and ultimately best of humanity. The first part of the book builds the basis for the characters, the ship environment, and the science that may save humanity. The second half of the book is a wild ride through tragedy, survival, and understanding as Eva grows up fast, comes to terms with, and ultimately becomes an important part of the new world in which she finds herself. Keep tissues handy. It may affect you deeply like it did me.

This book is what happens when a tech writer decides to write a novel. It was interesting from a technological perspective. I also enjoyed the first person perspective and like Eva. She was interesting and believable. One of my issues with this book was that it took 297 pages before I finally discovered what the Arc was and what it meant. Before that point I kept thinking the book name and description were wrong. Finally the last 100 pages took me out of the tech and into the story. Unfortunately there was not too much character development other than the main character, so I never felt connected to the characters. The technology and medical aspects of the book were interesting and made me think some about our future, but other than that, I can’t say much more about the story itself. For a first book, it wasn’t bad, but hopefully, if the author continues with other stories, there will be more focus on character development and less on the tech details.

Once I hit those chapters where the main character hops on the New Eden ship, I was absolutely glued to the pages. The level of detail the author puts into describing everything just sucked me right in, you know? And I kept thinking, like, could this stuff actually happen in our world, like, soon?

And let me tell you, having that figure of the ship with its 18 (or was it 19?) decks was a lifesaver. It helped me keep track of where Eva was wandering around, and it made the whole thing feel even more real.

But man, as the end of the book crept closer, it got seriously intense. Like, twists and turns I never saw coming, making the whole ride even more thrilling. I'm totally gonna recommend this book to everyone I know.

Oh, and those intro chapters? They really give you the lowdown on all the main characters, which is awesome.

I couldn’t put this down…so much so that I ended up being late to things several times while reading it. I’m not a big sci-fi person, but I definitely got into this! It has a strong moral heart to it paired with an endearing and complex narrator who’s easy to get attached to, and that’s what really drew me in and moved me through the story. That said, the plot and world building are probably the most objectively impressive thing about this book. The author fleshed out a remarkably creative and original idea for a story/world and filled it with detail without bogging down the reader or missing plot holes. It really is a stunning first novel, and I hope to read more from her!

Great novel by debut writer. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Strong character development. The author obviously knows her stuff when it comes to science of the future and yet the book is readable, the science does not weigh the book down.
