Will the technological advances of the New Eden, a mysterious, government-funded, science vessel, be enough to save Eva when the arc of civilization takes a sharp turn? That's the question asked and answered by this new novel.
The year is 2032 and Eva, a brilliant but angst-ridden 18-year-old, is frustrated by the insanity she sees everywhere she turns. Incivility in Politics. Gun violence. Climate change. Wars. Pollution. Greed. Power. Injustice. It all seems too much for her, and she feels powerless to make a difference.
Through a lucky set of circumstances, she finds herself joining her grandmother, an award-winning scientist, on board the New Eden, a combination residential cruise ship and floating science center, shrouded in mystery. She spends the summer of her dreams immersed in mind-boggling scientific breakthroughs that she feels could save humanity. Then just as Eva starts to believe in her ability to help heal the planet, her world is turned upside down—literally and figuratively.
Eva and the New Eden community have to learn to understand and navigate the new world in which they find themselves. Is it the end of humanity? Or a new beginning?
M. E. LANGE is a high-tech consultant and writer, having written non-fiction technical documents and articles for over 35 years. Arc is her first work of fiction. She is married, has two daughters, two stepdaughters, and splits her time between Beaverton, Oregon and St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. She loves to travel--including taking cruises with friends and family.
Arc is the story of a troubled world, as told by Eva, the young adult protagonist. On the New Eden, a mysterious science vessel, Eva comes to terms with the worst and ultimately best of humanity. The first part of the book builds the basis for the characters, the ship environment, and the science that may save humanity. The second half of the book is a wild ride through tragedy, survival, and understanding as Eva grows up fast, comes to terms with, and ultimately becomes an important part of the new world in which she finds herself. Keep tissues handy. It may affect you deeply like it did me.

Readers’ Comments “Reminded me a little of The Martian where ‘science’ is almost a character in the story. This is an environmental novel, vast in scope, superbly researched with a thrilling end. Admittedly, a good editor would cut into the opening third and improve the pacing, but it’s still an absorbing, thought-provoking read.” Male reader, aged 43 “This book is different in so much as it’s not all about the problems; it’s about finding the answers too. Rather refreshing I thought.” Female reader, aged 66 “Complex, richly described, thought-provoking – loved it! Readers who enjoy techno-thrillers will enjoy this. Slow start but keep reading; trust me, you’ll be hooked by page 50.” Male reader, aged 19 “Interesting ‘novel’ – when I say ‘novel’ I know that’s what it is, but it felt almost like a textbook in parts. It’s rather long, very slow, almost plodding until the last third when things pick up. I liked Eva – which is good as you get to know her very well. I think the author is a good writer but she needs to know when to ‘get things moving’. There’s only so much character description a reader can take. If this book was cut by 30%, it’d be a gem!” Female reader, aged 54 “I didn’t enjoy the first chapters; simply too much of a slog. Saying that, when the novel got going, it helped knowing the characters so well. The ship, New Eden, is a FAB setting for this book, and I liked Eva and all her teenager angst! Just like my daughter.” Female reader, aged 48

The ending is something I won't divulge, but the author skillfully addresses the urgent need for human unity in facing our collective future. It's an excellent read for book clubs, sure to ignite conversations about the direction our world is heading.
Arc is such a cool read! It's like, the author dives deep into all these big problems we're facing - stuff that keeps me up at night thinking about what kind of world we're leaving behind for the kiddos, you know? But what's awesome is that she doesn't just talk doom and gloom; she's all about imagining these smart solutions, using science to kinda pull us back from the edge. And she knows her stuff, which makes it feel all the more real and gives a glimmer of hope.
The story itself? Super engaging. It centers around this super smart young lady who's all in on making the world a better place. You can't help but root for her. The relationships she builds are super sweet and genuine. Then there's this big, wild event that goes down, and it's like a rollercoaster ride - totally grabs you. And what comes after is both wildly creative and a bit scary.
Reading Arc really gets the gears turning about the big picture stuff, the challenges our planet is up against. But it's not just heavy - there's this personal journey that adds a whole other layer to get into. Definitely a must-read for anyone who gives a hoot about where we're headed. Plus, the personal story tucked in there? Icing on the cake.
Arc is an amazing read that dives deep into the issues our world is grappling with today. It's the kind of book that keeps you up at night, thinking about the future our grandkids will live in. The author doesn't shy away from the big problems - both ecological and social. What's really impressive is how she uses her vast technical knowledge to come up with solutions that feel real and doable, giving us hope that science might just be our savior.
The book isn't just about big ideas. It's also a gripping story about a brilliant young woman who's determined to make a difference. She's the kind of character you root for, and her relationships with others are so real and heartfelt. The main event in the story is both thrilling and creative, yet it also sends a shiver down your spine with its inventiveness and the hint of danger it brings.
Reading Arc makes you think hard about the challenges we face as a world. It's a must-read for anyone who cares about our planet's future. Plus, the personal journey of the main character adds a special touch to the whole experience.
ARC is an enthralling book that deeply explores our concerns about the legacy we're leaving for our grandchildren. Set on a cruise ship named New Eden, which doubles as a floating science hub, the novel brings together some of the brightest minds on the planet. These experts are at the forefront of incredible advancements in AI, medical science, green energy, cellular agriculture, eco-friendly farming, and marine studies. Their collective goal? To harness these cutting-edge fields for the betterment of mankind's future.
Just as hope starts to blossom, the story takes a dramatic turn with a staggering event that shakes the very foundation of their mission. This twist leads to a profound question: despite our scientific achievements, are we still bound by the limitations of our human nature?
M.E. Lange, in their debut novel, has crafted a compelling, fast-paced narrative that's not just a great read but also leaves you eagerly awaiting their next work. This exceptional story not only entertains but also prompts serious reflection on our role in shaping the future.
The storyline is inventive and richly detailed, yet it's presented in a way that's easy to grasp without getting lost in complexity. The characters, especially the narrator, are well-developed and relatable, making the journey through the plot all the more engaging. It felt like I was part of the story, journeying alongside the characters.
The book paints a picture of the future that isn't too far off from our current world, addressing important themes like environmental issues and war. What I loved most was its lack of cynicism. Unlike many dystopian novels that only highlight the negatives, this one offers creative solutions for a better future, echoing some real-world challenges and solutions.
I connected deeply with the characters, sharing in their joys and sorrows. This connection was so strong that I immediately re-read the book after finishing it. Whether you're a sci-fi enthusiast or not, I highly recommend giving this book a try.
This book is what happens when a tech writer decides to write a novel. It was interesting from a technological perspective. I also enjoyed the first person perspective and like Eva. She was interesting and believable. One of my issues with this book was that it took 297 pages before I finally discovered what the Arc was and what it meant. Before that point I kept thinking the book name and description were wrong. Finally the last 100 pages took me out of the tech and into the story. Unfortunately there was not too much character development other than the main character, so I never felt connected to the characters. The technology and medical aspects of the book were interesting and made me think some about our future, but other than that, I can’t say much more about the story itself. For a first book, it wasn’t bad, but hopefully, if the author continues with other stories, there will be more focus on character development and less on the tech details.
Picture this: all the smartest folks from around the globe are chilling on this massive cruise ship turned science hub, called New Eden, trying to fix all the big problems we're worried about leaving for our grandkids. We're talking cutting-edge stuff in AI, medical breakthroughs, clean energy, you name it - they're on it.
It's like everyone on board is buzzing with hope, thinking they're about to change the game for good. But then, bam! Out of nowhere, this insane, game-changing event throws everything for a loop. Makes you wonder, with all our tech and smarts, are we still just, you know, too human at the end of the day?
For a first book, Lange knocked it out of the park. It's super engaging, flies by when you're reading, and honestly, you'll be hanging on for what's next. Definitely check it out, you won't regret it!
Once I hit those chapters where the main character hops on the New Eden ship, I was absolutely glued to the pages. The level of detail the author puts into describing everything just sucked me right in, you know? And I kept thinking, like, could this stuff actually happen in our world, like, soon?
And let me tell you, having that figure of the ship with its 18 (or was it 19?) decks was a lifesaver. It helped me keep track of where Eva was wandering around, and it made the whole thing feel even more real.
But man, as the end of the book crept closer, it got seriously intense. Like, twists and turns I never saw coming, making the whole ride even more thrilling. I'm totally gonna recommend this book to everyone I know.
Oh, and those intro chapters? They really give you the lowdown on all the main characters, which is awesome.
I couldn’t put this down…so much so that I ended up being late to things several times while reading it. I’m not a big sci-fi person, but I definitely got into this! It has a strong moral heart to it paired with an endearing and complex narrator who’s easy to get attached to, and that’s what really drew me in and moved me through the story. That said, the plot and world building are probably the most objectively impressive thing about this book. The author fleshed out a remarkably creative and original idea for a story/world and filled it with detail without bogging down the reader or missing plot holes. It really is a stunning first novel, and I hope to read more from her!
Absolutely adored this book by Lange! It's like she takes you on this epic adventure that just blows your mind with what could be if we all just made smarter choices. The whole idea of a scientific community she's cooked up is both eye-opening and kinda serves as a wake-up call, you know? There were parts that totally caught me off guard in the best way possible. Honestly, it got me thinking deep, hit me right in the feels, and even had me tearing up a bit. Lange's latest is a must-read, no doubt about it. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up on Netflix or something. Give it a read, and you'll get what I mean.
Arc takes you into a chaotic world through the eyes of Eva, a young protagonist who finds herself aboard the enigmatic vessel, New Eden. The first half of the story lays the groundwork, introducing us to the characters, the unique setting of the ship, and the advanced science that might be humanity's last hope. As the story unfolds, we're taken on an intense journey filled with heartbreak, resilience, and enlightenment. Watching Eva mature rapidly and play a crucial role in shaping a new world is both inspiring and heart-wrenching. This book touched me profoundly, so you might want to keep some tissues close by.
Great novel by debut writer. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Strong character development. The author obviously knows her stuff when it comes to science of the future and yet the book is readable, the science does not weigh the book down. The plot developed well and the novel drew me into it's world. It felt like this book was laying the groundwork for additional adventures and I look forward to more from this author.
M.E. Lange has outdone herself in the creation of her characters and weaving an enthralling tale about the end of the world. The story unfolds on the ship ""New Eden,"" showing how the survivors cope with this new reality. The main characters, Grams and Eva, are so well-developed that you can't help but fall in love with them. This book doesn't just offer a fictional glimpse into the end of civilization; it explores the human response to such a crisis. Absolutely fantastic read!
The characters were so well fleshed out – it's clear the author really gets the whole science fiction thing. But don't worry, it's not all tech talk; the story's super engaging and easy to follow. The plot? It just kept getting better, pulling me right into the story's universe. It kind of feels like the author's setting the stage for more books to come, and honestly, I can't wait to see what they come up with next.
I really had a good time diving into this book. The way the characters grow throughout the story is impressive. You can tell the author really knows her way around future tech, but she keeps it all super accessible – the tech talk never gets in the way of the story. The plot unfolds nicely, pulling you deeper into the book's world with every chapter. It feels like this is just the beginning, and there's more exciting stuff to come.
Right from the get-go, the writer paints this picture - like, you can practically see the characters and where they're hanging out, and you get the whole vibe of the story. But here's the kicker: stuff starts happening that you'd never expect, like really out-there stuff, but somehow, it doesn't feel fake or forced at all. You're reading along, and before you know it, you're totally sucked in, feeling like you're right there in the thick of things with the characters. It's wild, really.
Navigated by Eva, our young, resilient protagonist. The book seamlessly blends science with the raw, human experience, creating a world aboard the New Eden that's both intriguing and relatable. The first half sets a strong foundation, but it's the latter part where the story truly takes flight. Eva's journey through adversity is not only compelling but deeply moving.
It's a rollercoaster! It dives deep into our planet's issues but in a way that's super hopeful, thanks to science. The main character is this brilliant young woman you can't help but root for. The whole 'big event' thing had me on the edge of my seat. Definitely a must-read if you're into books that make you think and feel optimistic about the future. Plus, the personal stories? Heartwarming!
A young woman with the brains and heart to change the world, surrounded by a cast that feels as real as your next-door neighbors. The drama, the event, the aftermath—it's all one big, thrilling ride that's both imaginative and a bit scary. But beyond the story, it's a wake-up call, a reminder of the stakes we're playing for.
If you're worried about what we're leaving behind for the next generations, 'Arc' is a book you gotta check out. It's not just doom and gloom; it's packed with smart, science-backed solutions that kinda make you believe we can actually turn things around. The story's heroine is a genius with a big heart, making her journey all the more compelling.
It's almost like they just peeked into tomorrow and jotted it all down. And that ship? Man, I wish we could actually hop on board one of those. The big climax of the story had me on the edge of my seat - it was a rollercoaster of thrills and feels. Fingers crossed we never see that day for real, though.
The writer really shines in creating a vivid setting - you get clear pictures of the characters, the places, and the story's progression. What's amazing is how they take an unimaginable event and make it feel so real. As the story unfolds, it's like you're right there, in the thick of the action, totally immersed and believing every bit of it.
Arc hit me right in the feels and the brain! It's not just a story; it's a wakeup call with a side of hope. The main character is a powerhouse – super smart and dedicated to fixing our world's mess. And the plot? It's like a blockbuster movie in book form. You'll finish it feeling a little scared, but mostly inspired. Definitely give it a go!
This book has it all - it starts off making you think, really digging into some cool future stuff that honestly feels like it's just around the corner. But then, out of nowhere, it turns into this edge-of-your-seat thriller. Never saw that twist coming! Seriously, if you're looking for a good read that's a mix of smart and exciting, you've gotta check this one out. Had a blast reading it!
What a journey! The start's all about setting the scene on this science ship, New Eden, and laying down some cool sci-fi concepts. But man, the second half? Total emotional havoc. Watching Eva navigate through all that madness and come out stronger? That's something. Keep some tissues nearby; you're gonna need 'em. Solid read, for sure.
I loved the author’s character development and way she unfolded the story! Very well and well written. Highly recommend!! Great story. Hopefully the story will continue.
The journey of Eva on the New Eden had me hooked from the get-go. The science bits were fascinating, but it's really the human aspect that hit home for me. Definitely a tearjerker towards the end. Highly recommend if you're into stories that delve deep into the human spirit.
Absolutely enjoyed how the characters grew throughout the book and how the plot was laid out! The writing was top-notch. Definitely a must-read. Such an amazing storyline. Fingers crossed there's more to come from this.
