Deer Dad By J.J. Reich Illustrations By Jonathan Kuehl Grade Levels: App. 2-5 DRA/Lexile Measure/GLE: n/a Reviewed By Aaron Carter
Deer Dad is lighthearted read about a father, who is a hunter, and who uses unique and comical ways to teach his child about the life cycle and habits of the whitetail deer. For example, he uses a deerskin rug to explain how the fur's color helps it blend into its surroundings and hide from predators, as well as keep it warm, and how the animal's split hoof aids to walk in snow and mud, among other things. Children and adults alike will learn much about the country's most prevalent big-game animal. In addition to the book's educational aspect, extensive commentary offers an excellent opportunity to practice and perfect fluency skills such as prosody. Overall, the sentence structures and words are relatively simple and easy, respectively, though some explanation might be needed for words such as camouflage and blocks for the lower grades.
Deer Dad is a real family-friendly story that helps kids learn about whitetail deer in an interesting & unique way. Especially great for father & son bonding or for those who have a passion for wildlife and hunting. The illustrations are also fun & interactive with hidden arrowheads on each page. Saw the illustrator do a live reading at our local library & the kids all really enjoyed it!
