Let me start by saying that I am not the biggest fan of historical fiction, ESPECIALLY stories dealing with slavery.
But I’m a JanJan Untamed stan and I knew my girl was not gonna disappoint me with this one. And she didn’t! This duet was absolutely amazing! Hoooney…..this is NOT your traditional slavery book!
It pissed me off, made me cry, and made me uncomfortable at times with the vile and horrific things that these fucktards bestowed on their slaves.
My heart weeped for Darling/Coffee/Marceline. What she went through and witnessed…I just wouldn’t wish that on anyone. She was a house slave and also a bed wench. Her and other slaves on Old Philip’s plantation suffered so much. Old Philip and his sons….don’t even get me started. 🤬
I didn’t know know what to feel about Dominic at first. But I needed up loving him! He was not who I though he was at all! He made a promise to Darling years ago and baaaaaby did he keep it.
This story was sooo well written! The plot keeps you guessing. There are so many plot twists that had me shook! JanJan’s writing captivates you. Even when the story was tough to read at times, I kept going. Her writing really locks you in. JanJan Untamed books are not for the faint, but are most definitely worth the read!
Be aware of trigger warnings. Pretty much any trigger you can think of is in this story.
I highly recommend you guys check out this duet! 5 stars across the board!
So the book is great I won't debate that very few grammatical errors But the ending though could have been better it was not what I would have wanted. The book ended! it kind of left you on a cliff hanger because: are the kids OK? did they survive? did they get them back? how did they get them back? why is Marcy still human and she's been revived somehow? Are the kids still alive or did they allow them to age? What happened to her scars are they still there? Nothing about what happened gets flused out and explained. It's the end and i feel like the author just got tired of writing. I wish the author would go back and flush out the ending instead of just being kinda like I'm tired of writing I'm done, finished, and published. Or maybe a bonus chapter! Anything fam...
Not an easy read, but once you start you can't put it down. My mood fluctuated between 2 and 5 stars rating, but the author wrapped up everything so good in the end that I was left satisfied. I highly recommend! But heed the triggers.
I loved this book.........until the last chapter. Not that I didn't like what happened (I still fully stand behind my 5 ⭐️s), but things were not fully explained. The books were both so vivid and descriptive and then towards the end of the book it's like the author just said "I'm tired of this" and dipped. I don't get it.
First of all....what happened to Zen? What happened to Fallon?
Second of all....what happened to the girls when they were kidnapped by slavers at the end? There was not one ounce of explanation to say they got out or survived.
Third of all....how was modern day Marceline (yes, she has the same name) alive more than 200 years later and he knew who/where she was? Is she the reincarnation of Marceline? Did he turn her and she forgot who she was something?
The author doesn't have a website or recent information on her Instagram, so I couldn't find if there's some bonus epilogue somewhere like many romance authors do. So disappointing.
The whole series could use another round of editing but this book and the next sucked me in, chewed me up and spit me out!
I don't usually engage much with material that talks about slavery in the old south, for various reasons, but mainly because it's usually a bit white washed, but something told me to pick this book up and give it a try. I'm so glad I did, it's dark, bleak and gritty and you can tell the author really did their research. Marcelyn's story moved me and it was a duet I won't soon forget.
Darling Unchained and Devil's Darling (Book 1), kept me thoroughly captivated. I read both of these two fairly lengthy books in under 36 hours because I.literally could bot put them down. In fact I skipped work to finish Devil's Darling! Dominic and Marceline's (known as Darling to her evil slavers) story is tragic, sad exciting and glorious all at once. I am sure I experienced every possible emotion while reading these two books!
I should say that these books are not easy to reads, especially as a Black woman. And sitting next to my white partner while reading definitely provided me with some uncomfortable moments = but they were well worth it. The books follow the story of Marceline, a Black woman born into slavery and abused in the most horrific ways by her slavers, the Sinclair family. Frankly I have a difficult time watching movies about this time period in America's history - I have yet to see 12 Years a Slave and could barely sit thru Change Unchained. I typically avoid books with a slavery theme as well, but for some reason decided to give these two books a try and then couldn't out them down. The bok describes the horror of slavery in vivid detail and I have to commend Hannah Untamed for the amount if research she must have done to create such an historically accurate account. But prepared to be shocked and horrified by some of what is described in the books. I admittedly had to stop a couple of times to gather myself before I could continue reading. However I laughed and cried just as many tears of joy.
It is difficult to descibe these books without giving away spoilers, but ultimately is just a great love story where the two main characters go through a LOT before they can finally truly be together. The only thing I questioned about the books was its paranormal element. It almost seemed gratuitous and unnecessary as it didn't seem to contribute much to the storyline.... And then I got to the last chapter and made perfect sense!
I highly recommend these books, but make sure to give yourself lots of uninterrupted reading time!
I loved the first book, but goodness gracious what that ending? I've never been so confused and it's not like I'm having a hard time following along it's just the way the book ends it feels like there should have been more but we're missing half the information or they're supposed to be another book.
my mouth was hanging open and not in a good way by the ending tbh. it's not like the author doesn't have talent because she does and the first book was good and the majority of this book was too
I like to interactions between the characters and the dialogue and that's a really big selling point for me but first of all there's a plot point in here that just makes no sense
why is Dom what he is like why is it important to the story and why did it just show up all of a sudden out of nowhere
then if we're going to try and double back to the ending with that plot Point make it make sense because I don't even understand what that ending was and it did not give me the payoff it was supposed to be giving It feels like 99% of the series was good until the ending
Now I'm hearing that based on other reviews of different books that this is kind of the same thing and I was actually reading another one of her works that I was enjoying a lot called the Doomsday papers I really liked it not as much as this book but then I was just curious and come to find out it has the same odd plot point that just comes out of nowhere at like the 70% Mark of the book I don't understand why and I feel like there could be better transitioning with this. so I basically dnf'd that one but I did read through all of this one and the series was good but chile that ending was crazy work I really do hope in the future she can rework that ending and also characters that are supposed to be dead are just alive and fine outside of that the story is good and the author does have potential so I will give other things that she has a chance
This book had me on the edge of my seat. Like my anxiety was way up.
I just wanted to shake Darling and say “f*ck Elliot”!!! Like he took advantage of her so bad. She was such a fool. Dominic is still trash. He still treated her so bad. She finally comes to the realization of Elliot’s true colors.
I honestly feel like Elliot might’ve only messed with her because he was jealous of Dominic to begin with. But knowing Elliot it was just his entitlement.
I don’t know what happened to make Dominic start being nice though.
I thought she lost her womb. How was she pregnant again?
As I got towards the end, I felt like I’d read this story before. So I don’t know if that made this predictable or what but I definitely knew almost everything that was going to happen. The book doesn’t end on a cliffhanger but the ending is definitely open for interpretation. I assume Marceline did what most of the women do throughout most of this authors books.
I don’t know how to start this review, so I will let my heart speak. I just finished the Devil’s Darling Duet and would like to thank JanJan for this masterpiece. Tears are running down my face as I am writing this : yes, I am an emotional reader.
This story was perfectly achieved. The authors’ mind is incredible ; and her words express it in a unique way. This book captivated me. I was trapped in this story. My heart was on a rollercoaster with different emotions at every page... Ending this book was heartbreaking, as i grew attached to the characters. The only way to heal my heart will be to read this duet a second time…
This is JanJan’s third book i am reading. I fell in love with her writing months ago when I read « The View From The Bottom », another masterpiece.
Her writing is imperfectly perfect. Some will say her imagination is harsh, i will say her imagination is embodied, incarnate. Some will say her words are crude, i will say her words are real…
Please miss JanJan spare me I can't take it anymore with my up and down feelings and emotions reading your books!! Readers I won't tell you what happened you have to read it and see but the With this book please let the cape crusaders put their capes away because no 1 asked you to read this book, but for those who are brave this book will not disappoint if you are looking for a book that will have you going through the gauntlet of emotions this book is for you. The ups and downs will eventually be worth it.
JanJan did it again. I’m an avid reader, and when I realized her book wasn’t part of my subscription to Kindle Unlimited, I didn’t hesitate to purchase it because I knew it would be good. Janjan did not disappoint. And what was the best part was she had already written the second book, so I didn’t have to wait months. I’m not going into much detail about the story because I don’t want to disappoint you. In my honest opinion, sometimes reviews don’t do the story justice. But please, read this book, you won’t regret it.
This story is written buy an author with a writing style like no other! I was sad, happy, hopeful and damn near tearful through out this story. I don’t like giving spoilers and I wanted to finish part 1&2 before I left a review. My review is dive in and read it! I just needed a little more at the end cause I was not ready for the story of these characters to end but it was quite a journey that’s for sure🥹
I did not want this to end. I have been locked up in this story all weekend. I have never been on such a fantastic roller coaster ride. I loved these two lovers. I have loved this author from the very first story I read and can not wait for all that she has to come. The end was so satisfying, even though I did not want it to end!
3.5 stars It was hard for me to connect with this 2nd installment. It was just too much going on that everything was so convoluted. I had to push myself to finish reading it. Everyone is so frustrating and the only one that didn’t get on my nerves was the baby Pumpkin. But I am happy that Marciline got her HEA and it appears it will be that way for the future lifetimes.
I wasn't sure I would continue reading after the first book because it was just too much that Marceline went through but I'm glad I kept reading. This was a really good book and I'm glad to see everyone got what they deserved.
The ending of enjoyable story. Elliot got what be deserved that whole freaking family was some sick people. The way it ended it threw me off though. That girl endure a lot.
