Ruled by Fate, by Sam Withrow and Amelia Pinkis, is the first book in the Forbidden Tears series. This is a slow-burn, forbidden romance, with intriguing supernatural elements.

Brie is a young woman from our world, with a troubled, tragic past. She lost her mother in an accident, and Brie believes that a guardian angel saved her, although no one around her experienced any evidence of this, and people tell her she must have imagined it. She thinks she’s finally moving past her loss, but… things are really not as they seem. Without revealing too much, Brie has a special destiny, with dangers and promise all around. Her guardian angel, Cameron, is very real, and with all the dangers around Brie, she needs that protection. Their feelings for each other, though, might be more than protector/protected.

Ruled by Fate is the beginning of a series, so there’s a lot of time devoted to setting up our characters. This is good for me, you know I love a character-driven story! And there’s a slow-burn romance, so a lot of this novel is more understated. Ruled By Fate also sets up the supernatural worldbuilding for the series to come. I enjoyed how this came together. There’s an intriguing and mysterious vibe overall, with a solid conclusion, but since it’s the first novel in the series, not everything referenced is fully explained.

There’s a lovely underlying theme of being honest and true to oneself that helps to ground the fantastic elements of the story in realistic emotions. This, along with the slowly developing romantic relationship, helps to develop Brie as a realistic, vibrant character. This is a vibe I always like in YA/NA fiction -- it’s such a great way to show character growth and to connect readers with characters.

Ruled by Fate is a slow-burn romance with mysterious supernatural elements and intriguing worldbuilding.

I’ve been really lucky with the fiction I’ve been reading lately. Everything has been pretty solid including this one. It’s one of those books that gets you interested from the first page. I made the mistake of starting it before bed and realized too late that I read for hours past my bedtime! Talk about a book hangover lol but it was so worth it. What I loved the most about this book is how much it had going on from the plot to the characters. I don’t want to give spoilers but I was so invested in what was going on. Honestly, the authors did a great job crafting this story. It was well written and the pacing was on point, I would highly recommend it.

I've been trying to get into fantasy, and this was a great one to read (bonus points since romance is thrown in). It drew me in right away and I was able to read and connect with the book chapter after chapter along with all the characters. I felt all the emotions- when Brianna lost her mother and no one believed how she was killed, laughing at Cameron (Brie's guardian angel) as he figured out how to use things on Earth (a phone, toaster, etc.), then them having to fight off demon magical beasts.

I loved the mix of angels, devil, magic, fantasy, all of it. The writers were able to create this world in your mind and you could see all of it and visit there with Brie and Cameron.

Two of my favorite scenes are also heart breaking. Brianna is leaving her father in their home to move on in her life with her best friend. All he wants to do is drink and doesn't care much about anything. When Brianna goes to leave and looks out her window to her dad's hand 🤟 🥺 and the other when she's sitting in the woods talking to her mom where she passed away. Scenes like this always get me.

A supernatural tale with the inner weavings of romance, battles against the darkness (and potentially society), wrapped up with facing down the truth of whether or not we all have a choice, sweep through the pages of Ruled by Fate, Book 1 in the Forbidden Tears Series by Sam Withrow and Amelia Pinkis. Brianna Weldon, also known as Brie, encounters and survives a horrific attack however someone close to her does not. While she is saved by an inexplicable and seemingly imaginary guardian angel, her life is never the same again. We follow along with Brie as she comes face to face with her loss, the unexpected return of her guardian angel and the potentially bitter truth that one cannot escape their fate.
The story at its core isn’t anything completely new: strong independent woman leaves small-town life behind in search of her true self, coming to grips with her past and her otherworldly love-interest at the same time. While these ideas at their core may be similar to other stories out there, it is the execution that puts this tale above others. Not incredibly long and very easy to read, Withrow and Pinkis clearly gave attention to the characters they were creating. Brie, her friend Sherry, even the angel Cameron all feel real. They feel like truly developed characters with personalities and quirks that don’t necessarily get fleshed out in shorter stories like this. Brie has spunk and attitude while retaining a sense of humour. Her friend Sherry is amusing while clearing looking out for Brie. Cameron, even though he defies the expectations of ‘normal’ has a personality, thoughts and feelings that are unique to him while also making him relatable to the reader. It’s easy to fall in love with these characters and their story. The romantic notes permeate the pages and culminate into a glorious firework.
This book is the beginning of a series, and it clearly ends like one. There are more questions that answers as we turn the final pages of Ruled by Fate by Sam Withrow and Amelia Pinkis. Brianna undergoes a significant event that opens up the story for more. But what will the conclusion be? What will the rest of the story have to tell us about the strange happenings that turned our protagonist’s life upside down all those year ago? Readers will have to satisfy themselves by re-reading this first installment while waiting eagerly for the next.

Ruled by Fate deftly explores the age-old conundrum of personal choices versus the inexorable pull of destiny, offering a tapestry of twists and turns. Love and attraction, high-stakes adventure, formidable risks, malevolent demons, and an ultimate showdown against one of the seven deadly fallen angels all contribute to a truly remarkable plot.
What makes this story truly exceptional is its magnetic progression, supported by well-developed characters and their deeply passionate interactions. The authors’ writing style creates an emotional depth and an intimate atmosphere that draws readers into the protagonist's experiences and emotions. Despite the narrative not adopting a first-person perspective, the storytelling, grounded in Brie's encounters, allows readers to forge a close connection with her character, readily stepping into her shoes in every scene. I found myself swept away by a myriad of emotions as I delved into the enthralling journey of this formidable female lead, eagerly turning page after page. Once I started, it became nearly impossible to put the book down, driven by an insatiable desire to uncover what awaited Brie next.
I was particularly enamored by the imaginative world-building skillfully crafted by the authors. Their approach to the narrative goes beyond the conventional struggle between light and darkness, instead offering a unique perspective on human existence and its enigmatic encounters with the supernatural. This is a spellbinding and enchanting voyage that will undoubtedly delight any fantasy enthusiast.
Ruled by Fate is an exquisitely crafted narrative that masterfully captures and holds the reader's attention from its opening pages to its thrilling conclusion.

Ruled by Fate marks the impressive beginning of The Forbidden Tears Series, a collaborative work by the exceptionally talented authors Amelia Pinkis and Sam Withrow.
The plot is nothing short of a master class in storytelling, populated by a diverse and captivating cast of characters. Each character possesses their own quirks, fears, and beliefs, and the authors deftly navigate the complexities of their relationships and concealed secrets to unveil the truth. These multifaceted characters are portrayed with remarkable realism, making it effortless for readers to emotionally invest in their journeys. I, for one, found myself immediately connecting with them, feeling as though they were close companions. The authors' prose is beautifully descriptive, conjuring a vivid and atmospheric backdrop for the narrative. I could almost feel the cool, misty air of the setting, and the town itself became a place I yearned to visit daily. Their skill in building suspense and tension is evident throughout the novel, with each chapter leaving readers hungry for more. This was my first foray into the works of these two brilliant minds, and it certainly won't be my last. In fact, I eagerly anticipate delving into the rest of the collection to continue the enchanting story that I have come to cherish so deeply.

I really loved this book but am giving it 3 stars because of the incomplete ending. It really just left me hanging and with no follow up book waiting in the wings it’s disappointing. Cam and Brie are absolutely delightful, the plot was interesting and I was completely invested, which makes it all the more disappointing to have more questions than answers at the end of this.

"Ruled by Fate" by Sam Withrow & Amelia Pinkis was a book that pleasantly surprised me.

The story follows Brianna Weldon, a young nurse ready to embark on a new phase of her life. After a traumatic event that occurred five years earlier, she decides to turn the page and receives invaluable support from her best friend Sherry, who secures her a position in one of the most prestigious hospitals in the area.

It all begins with Brie, convincing herself that her previous encounters with monstrous creatures, the magical power of an ancestral pendant, and a mysterious angel named Cameron were merely the product of hallucinations, creations of her own mind. But as she starts her new life in Virginia, these extraordinary events resurface, forcing her to reconsider her disbelief.

"Ruled by Fate" is a wonderful paranormal novel that takes readers on an engaging journey filled with suspense, supernatural elements, and a forbidden love story. What's more, the book offers moments of levity that greatly impressed me.

One thing I loved were the characters, from Cameron and Brie, who share incredible chemistry that intensifies thanks to the forbidden love trope, to Sherry, Brie's best friend, a fantastic person we should all have in our lives.

The mystery surrounding Brie's role in supernatural events is very intriguing, but we'll undoubtedly have to wait for future books to learn more.

I can't wait to read the next book!

I want to thank Bookinfluencers and the authors for this opportunity.

Okay so I have to admit I was kind of on the fence about this one. I thought the concept sounded intriguing but it felt sort of short for a fantasy book. I think the concept was intriguing like really interesting. My issue was that the actual plot was not the focus of this one. Never ever have I read a series and wished that the book gave me more world building. However with this one I desperately wanted more of the world building for the important stuff.
This one really focuses on introducing and developing characters, which is nice, but I felt like a lot of reading happened and only minimal necessary plot occurred. The book was working on the slow burn relationship between Brie and Cameron. I think if we had gotten to know more about the supernatural stuff this one would have been at least 4 stars for me.
I really enjoyed the last like 10 chapters of the book because it felt like things were taking off and I was getting what I had been hoping for. I will admit I was kind of shocked that a big focus was biblical mythology because that wasn’t what I got from the summary. However, I like the way the authors did it. I think they did really good at building up the suspense for the next book; I just wish they had given me a bit more information to work with in this book. I felt like nothing was resolved. Overall though it’s a quick fun read that examines so serious issues.

This book revolves around Brianna Weldon's journey from a young nurse graduate to a woman caught in a supernatural battle. The plot revolves around Brianna and her angelic guardian Cameron who unfolds with a gripping mix of romance, danger, and the supernatural. The conflict escalates as Brianna discovers the transformative power of a mystical pendant, setting the stage for a compelling narrative.

The character dynamics between Brianna and Cameron add depth to the story, especially as they navigate challenges ranging from demonic wraiths to their undeniable attraction. The dialogue captures the essence of their relationship, blending tension and vulnerability. The author beautifully blends romance and fantasy, creating a world where the characters relates not only with external adversaries but also with their evolving identities.

The battle against one of seven deadly fallen angels promises a high-stakes climax, leaving readers eager for the next installment. This book well-crafted mix of supernatural elements, romance, and character development. It’s a compelling read for fans of paranormal romance and fantasy genres. The story is wonderfully crafted with good characterisation. The language is simple and easy to understand. I would recommend this book to the readers above 16 years of age. A supernatural romance you wont be able to put down!

I was drawn into this read by the synopsis and I must say the authors really delivered on their promises. In this book you get a blend of a PNR romance with mythology and suspense. This read will have you locked in from chapter one unable to put it down for even a second.

We follow Brie as she turns a new leaf and embarks on what she thinks is going to be a fresh start only to be pulled into the supernatural world filled with otherworldly forces a supernatural bond with another and malevolent demons. Instantly I fell in love with Cameron and his funny and sweet disposition. He is definitely very different to most mmc we see in books like this but he really made this book for me. The connection between these two Macs was such a treat to read and I found myself stuck in their journey as they navigated this new world together.

This is the first in what I hope is to be a series and I can't wait to see where these authors take this story. There's tons of potential and I think this could really be a big hit among readers. I will definitely recommend this to all my PNR book lovers that want and interesting and fresh plot with loveable characters.

what started as your average run of the mill YA urban fantasy set up quickly descends into something much more insightful and entertaining. Centred around a main female character named Brie who is determined to try and move past the trauma she'd experienced, and her guardian angel Cameron who looks like a greek god with the personality of a puppy.

I was quickly pulled into the magic system the second Brie first took her pendant off. I immediately wanted to know more and unravel whatever mystery was brewing. Even knowing she has a guardian angel from the first page doesn't spoil the magic that unfolds and the villains Brie has to face.

The cast of characters in this book all had distinct personalities, it was easy to fall in love with them and their relationships. Cameron was my personal favourite!

The romance was a real page turner, the building tension and the forbidden nature of it all. I was obsessed with getting to the next scene of Cam and Brie, a duo I truly fell in love with !!

I cannot wait to be able to read the rest of this series !!!

this wasn’t my usual go to read, but i was hooked from page one.
a romcom with paranormal elements, slow burn, forbidden.

it was a fun journey to read this story!
Brie is our main character who has been through a lot, she’s always taking care of everyone around her rather than herself.
Cameron is a 5,000 year old celestial, he’s her guardian angel so to say and very protective over our girl Brie. While still trying to figure out how to function on earth.

the chemistry between this two was so strong, i think it was my favorite part of this whole book!

I cannot wait for the next book!

I don’t want to say more and spoil this for anyone else who may want to read it. I feel like this would be a perfect ‘going in blind’ type of book!

thank you bookinfluencers & the authors for the copy!

This is an intriguing ya fantasy story that brings romance, grief, and the supernatural together along with mythological and spiritual elements. It's the start of a series and this book dealt with one of the seven deadly sins. I enjoyed the growth of the characters and the way the authors handled the trauma of the death of a parent. I also found what could and could not be seen in the human world interesting. Do angels walk among us? Are they able to help if they witness a crisis? And to what extent? I love books that leave me with thought-provoking questions and the desire to seek out answers.

I received a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.

Ruled by Fate (The Forbidden Tears Series Book 1) by Sam Withrow and Amelia Pinkis, the first book in a series, is an exciting book about the supernatural and a mortal's fight to live a normal life. Brianna Weldon spent a long time coming to terms with the incident that occurred during the tragic accident in which she lost her mother. No one believed her bizarre tale of the events that occurred during the accident. What better way to regain stability, keep her mental health in check, and forget the past than to move across states for a fresh start?

Sometimes we only need to believe in ourselves, and we will discover that we have untapped strength hiding just beneath the surface. What is a girl to do when trouble just keeps knocking on her door? Will her problems be over with the appearance of a dashing knight who glows with ethereal light? What if the problem is her and not the environment? What will she do when trouble follows her as she tries to start anew? What exactly are these creatures after? Do they have any link with her nightmares?

I enjoyed Cameron's character. He was like a breath of fresh air from the tensions and suspense. It was obvious where his loyalty lay from the start. Watching him enjoy simple meals reminded me that certain little pleasures can be taken for granted over time, and it's always good to slow down and savor the little joys life has to offer.

The plot was amazing and followed a logical sequence. Some of the themes in the book include friendship, family, and loss. Sherry's and Brianna's friendship was beautiful, and I enjoyed watching their interactions. Sherry showed true love for her friend; she tried to make Brianna's life easier in every way she could. She came to her rescue, completely disregarding her own safety. Although Brianna's and her dad's relationship deteriorated after the accident, she still did all she could to take care of her father. By continuously showing him love, affection, and care, she was able to reach him and help him get the courage and will to find his way out of the darkness before he was swallowed up completely. The loss of her mother almost completely shattered her father, and Brianna was left to pick up the pieces. This shows how strongly loss can affect people. Oftentimes, they may end up drowning in their grief if they refuse to accept help.

I recommend this book to young adults and adult readers, particularly those who enjoy contemporary fiction.

An amazing story.

This book immediately captured my attention, which is quite unusual for me. Typically, I need to delve into two or three chapters before the story truly takes shape in my mind, and I become engrossed in the plot. However, Ruled by Fate, written by the talented duo Sam Withrow and Amelia Pinkis, had me hooked from the very first page. The book serves as the inaugural installment in The Forbidden Tears Series and unfolds the tale of Brianna Weldon, a young nurse graduate whose life is forever altered by a supernatural assault, miraculously thwarted by the handsome, angelic guardian, Cameron. He vanishes abruptly, leaving her with a multitude of unanswered questions and a mystical pendant that she must never remove. Yet, five years later, as she embarks on a new chapter in her life, the nightmare resurfaces, along with the enigmatic Cameron. Thus commences an adventure she never anticipated, encompassing battles against one of the seven deadly fallen angels and navigating the complex web of her burgeoning attraction to Cameron, among other thrilling escapades.
This is a truly entertaining story that seamlessly weaves mythical characters and supernatural events into its fabric, blending elements of fantasy, mystery, suspense, and action. What impressed me the most is how the authors develop and integrate each character and element naturally and captivate the reader effortlessly. The story excels because everything within it possesses coherence and follows a compelling common thread. It's an easy read, and the narrative's balance between description and dialogue flows smoothly.
I have genuinely fallen in love with both the story and its characters, each of whom is fascinating. Yet, my personal favorite is undoubtedly Cameron, and I appreciate every nuanced detail and the vital role he plays. Ruled by Fate is a remarkable story, and I eagerly await its continuation. I highly recommend it to fellow readers seeking an engaging and immersive literary experience!

In Ruled by Fate, by Sam Withrow and Amelia Pinkis, readers delve into the tumultuous life of Brie. A harrowing car crash five years prior claimed her mother's life and left her narrowly escaping death. The scars of that traumatic event, intensified by a haunting supernatural experience, have made Brie's journey to healing an intricate maze. As she grapples with these memories, two anchors emerge: the comforting presence of her confidante, Sherry, and a cherished pendant, a maternal legacy symbolizing protection and a potential connection to the enigmatic guardian angel, Cameron, who once saved her.

Taking a leap of faith, Brie embarks on a fresh chapter, embracing the challenges of an ER nurse at the esteemed Daya Memorial Hospital. However, the supernatural isn't entirely done with her. As she finds herself ensnared in a web of malevolent forces, the protective shadow of Cameron returns, reminding her that the road to normalcy might be more elusive than she thought.

The narrative fabric of Ruled by Fate masterfully intertwines biblical characters and rich mythology, offering readers a front-row seat to Brie's trials, her evolving bond with Cameron, and her crusade against otherworldly adversaries. The chemistry between Brie and Cameron, sprinkled with lighthearted banter, infuses warmth into the story, ensuring the gravity of their mission is always in sharp focus. As much as readers are drawn into this captivating tale, a lingering enigma remains—Brie's unique role in the supernatural saga and the profound significance of her pendant. Although hints suggest a sequel might illuminate these mysteries, I think a revelation in this installment could have heightened the intrigue further.

Ruled by Fate is a brilliantly crafted debut to the "Forbidden Tears" series. Withrow and Pinkis weave a narrative that promises suspense, romance, and a tantalizing supernatural allure. Readers will be eager for the next chapter in Brie and Cameron's mesmerizing journey.

I was instantly hooked on this story! An Angel interacting with a human all while being hunted down by supernatural beings? Count me in! Cameron was an absolute doll - he’s handsome but incredible naive when it comes to the human experience, so I loved laughing at and with him alongside Brie. The writing flowed well and the dialogue felt real and natural! I enjoyed watching Cameron and Brie slowly fall for one another, even though their love is forbidden. The ending was a real joy too, as we finally see what Brie is capable of! If Greed was the first deadly sin, I’m excited to see which one(s) will show up next! I can’t wait to read book 2, where we hopefully visit Cameron’s world this time!

This novel begins with a unique and somewhat intricate narrative but swiftly becomes addictive and enthralling. I found myself deeply intrigued and eager to uncover the central conflicts of the story. However, as I progressed a few pages further, I savored each paragraph and narrative twist, allowing me to appreciate the intricate details and make the most of my reading experience. The authors have crafted a meticulously thought-out piece of literature, offering a narrative that is both rich and valuable in terms of its plot. While its potential may, at times, be subtly veiled, it gradually unfolds as the story progresses. The writers have done an exceptional job of conveying the tension and suspense that permeate the narrative.
At the plot's core is a young protagonist leading a mysterious and captivating life. An unexpected and supernatural encounter at the outset shatters her previous perspective on life, prompting a reevaluation of her ideals, goals, and relationship with her surroundings. This pivotal moment marks the beginning of a progressively intricate and thrilling narrative. My enjoyment of this book was unequivocal. The plot is intense and intricate yet undeniably compelling and entertaining. It kept me engrossed from the very beginning, and I never once contemplated putting it down. It became my companion during countless waits and daily commutes to work. I recommend it to anyone who appreciates a good read and craves originality in storytelling.
I shared this book with both family and friends, and it evoked the same enthusiasm in them as it did in me. I eagerly anticipate reading more from these talented authors.

I’m so glad this is book one in the series! And I’m so glad that this means that there is going to be book two too!
This book has quite a unique premise, it made me think of how much we actually have an effect and how much we actually affect our own lives. In this book, it is through the appearance (and help) of a guardian angel, and the thought of the possibility/impossibility of escaping one’s fate goes through the book.
If you are not like me and do not turn every story into a tale of self-exploration, then this also is a good read. Although honestly, I kept going back to this deeper philosophical reasoning again and again.
One more thing I’d like to point out about this book is the strong, very strong female MC. It feels real, realistic, and deep. And for that matter, all the other characters are also well-written.
This was an easy and quick, fast-paced read, but somehow it was also deep and felt realistic – despite it having lots of supernatural elements. It is quite a rare occurrence that a book is at the same time both an easy read and a deep one.

What a wonderful story this one was! Filled with sweet romantic vibes, but also a paranormal adventure following Brie and her guardian angel Cameron. Gifted a special pendant that she's had all her life and having suffered a tragic car accident where her mother perished, she finds herself starting a new job in a new place, trying to put it all behind her.

But when she realizes shadow creatures are trying to kill her and the pendant she wears is the best protection she has, her handsome guardian angel Cameron accompanies her on the journey to find answers. But he has a hard time fitting into Brie's life with his noticeable differences from everyone else and the unique way he talks like he's from another era.

But these two characters are amazing together and the story was really fun to watch unfold.

This first book is incredible, fast paced and sucks you into this rollercoaster ride adventure! The characters are so well done and you find yourself in their corner, hoping things work out for them as they embark on this supernatural journey. Brie and Cameron are brilliant characters and their slow burn romance is magical. Mystery, suspense, humour, romance, adventure and excitement as we follow them on their exciting and gripping path. With several laugh out loud moments, surprises and twists and turns, this duo have written a fantabulous story and i for one cannot wait to read more!

3.5/5 🌟

Such a quick read with a wonderful supernatural world! I love anything that has a modern take on mythology, and I really appreciated the biblical mythology elements mixed in with the more “traditional supernatural”.

I thought Brie & Cameron were both super fleshed, and while definitely a character-driven vs plot-driven story, it was easy to get through with solid pacing.

Tons of potential for the rest of the series!

This was probably one of the best stories about guardian angels I’ve ever read. I really loved Cameron’s juxtaposition between being powerful one minute and innocent the next. It was also interesting to gain an insight on how bad things still happen if we are all being watched. I love a good supernatural tale and this one did not disappoint.
