When a vampire assassin comes looking for her witch apprentice, Jenna B. Good will do anything to save her—even if that means making the ultimate sacrifice.
Jenna B. Good is a witch. She worked as a hunter for the Department of Preternatural Affairs (DPA), until a fae lunatic killed her werewolf fiancé, Sam, and her mentor, Hiro. Grief-stricken, she resigned from the DPA to run Elm City Arcana, the shop she inherited from Hiro. Now the only things she hunts are precious magical artifacts for her wealthy clients.
Until one day a vampire assassin shows up looking for her witch apprentice, Maya. Jenna takes her in only to find out that the predator was sent by the world’s most powerful vampire cabal—and that someone from the local community reported Maya to them. After enlisting the help of her hunter friend, Rick—who would have been Sam’s best man—Jenna uncovers a far deeper mystery in her apprentice’s past. Can Jenna prove Maya’s innocence before it’s too late?

It’s not what I expected at all. There’s no heat at all. Not even a potential relationship brewing. The storyline itself was a little bland. Found myself skimming several times, especially toward the end.
There are some very interesting characters I feel could have had an impact if the storyline had been stronger.
I liked that it kept me reading. I liked that no hard-core sex scenes. Lots of blood, gore, and language. Mild sex scenes: ie kissing, touch and lighter stuff. Vampires, witches, we'rewolves, fae and more. Enjoyed
This is the first book I have read from this author, but it won’t be the last . Definitely will be trying more from this author. Already got the next book in the series
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring by more than 0.50 of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
Interesting world.
I really wanted to like this book, but I just did not care about any of the characters.
First time read the author's work?: Yes
Will you be reading more?: No
Would you recommend?: No
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
So this is my first book by this author, but I’ve already snagged more! This was downright fun! The world building and specifics of each species is cool- you can be a shifter and a witch. Because it’s different. Or a vampire and a witch. Or a fae. You get it. I loved this concept. And I really like Jenna. A lot. She’s real. She’s flawed. She has a good heart and she makes mistakes and yet she still keeps going. She also kinda breaks my heart. I have a hope for one day a love interest butttttt I don’t see that happening quickly. Meeting each group ruler is cool too. I thought I’d hate the vamps. I actually like Valentina. I really like Naomi. I adore gunner and Rick. Argus intrigues me and her coven is amazing. I loved that I was surprised at the end. Really surprised. Not about the trick but why the trick was needed. Read it and you’ll understand. And now I can’t help it- I’m jumping to the next book!!!
This was an okay read. While I understand everyone grieves differently, I thought it was a bit too much for Jenna to be waking up every morning thinking her lost fiancé was still with her. Every once in a while, okay. Not every morning. I liked Jenna’s character well enough. I like that she has established boundaries when it comes to Rick. Rick has same thoughts but I don’t think his conviction is as there. Jenna is coven leader, she has background in going after the bad guys, so refreshing that she doesn’t think she has to do everything and others can’t help or be involved. She’s protecting Maya, and goes to great lengths to keep her safe, actions pretty much on point. Maya is also sensible, even better. Story part involving the vampire cabal was too much Twilight, Breaking Dawn in how they were depicted. Very much should have come up with something different. Needs less telling and more showing in the writing. I would rather “see” what’s going on than be told about it.
The moment I noted that the main character was named “Jenna B. Goode” and that every single other character pronounced her middle initial aloud, I should have stopped reading.
This book is bad.
It’s not well-written and quite off-putting in the technical execution because the writer doesn’t trust the reader to know words like “ichor” and provides a painstaking definition. He doesn’t think readers will be able to infer that the character from chapter 2 who was looking for Maya is the same character in chapter 3 who tries to break into Maya’s house. Don’t even get me started on the author’s depiction of college age women.
Jenna B. Goode is of indeterminate age, but expressly under 30, because male authors often seem to think that women over 30 are anomalous. The age-thing stood out because of the way the author laid out Jenna B. Goode’s life. She is extremely skilled and educated, has a lot of life experience and has been well-established for several years in at least 2 professional-level careers - without even scratching the surface of her full-time hobbies and other interests that include having regular break-downs over the death of her fiancé, Sam, 3 years prior. The mental spectre of Sam is a whole other character. She fears Tarot cards because the last time someone read cards for her Sam died. Her vintage muscle car is Sam’s. The reason for her career change, Sam. The guy she calls from the local werewolf pack and likely future love interest is a friend of Sam’s.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author. The book has plenty of action mystery paranormal’s. I read the book in one day. Once you get started, you do not want to put it down. I love all the characters and I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
This is the first book from this author that I’ve read and I’ve got to say it was a really good read. Plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged. I’m planning on reading more of the author’s work.
Well written faced paved exciting storyline with good characters. I look forward to seeing how each character grows into their own storyline throughout the series
