Ariane has come a long way since she was first made a vampire at the turn of the nineteenth century. Now she has territory, status, and a newly-made soul weapon courtesy of her lover Torran. Her little outing in Europe has been pleasant so far, but now trouble brews on the horizon. Her old friend and mentor Loth of Skorrag has asked for her help. Ariane is off to Sweden to find out what troubles the grumpy king of the Dvergur, and what machinations hide behind the schemes of ambitious nobles. After all, it has been some time since the last vampire war.
While the writing and story are still strong and compelling, the magic that made me love the series is missing. I mean that literally, there is almost zero advancement to the MC abilities and no highlight of her bloodline abilities. This feels like a well executed filler book. Her standing on a political and intrigue level increased but her magic was monotone and regulated to the background. It does seem to set up well that we will get more in the next book, but the lack is why I gave this book 3 stars.
This was an interesting book where instead of just focusing on small scale conflicts, the nature of the conflict dramatically escalated. And the pacing and description of things at this level was still quite good, which was a pleasant surprise (as things done at a larger scale typically require slower pacing). As always, there were plenty of twists and turns that kept things interesting and unpredictable. All in all, s very satisfying addition to the series.
This was undoubtedly, an awesome addition to the series with historic things happening throughout. A very old enemy made itself known to force the supernatural world into making some tough decisions, and epic battles preceded. This is undoubtedly, a great addition to the series, and I am very excited for book 8 in the future.
I do not read vampire books. And yet here I am finished book 7… I find it well written with witty and sarcastic mc’s and support characters. Is everything all gold and roses, no some parts are thin as well as some characters. But that is ok for me.
What a great saga, with so many good characters, awesome battles, incredible action and an amazing main character! Ariane is strong, smart and funny as hell! She is one of the main characters ever, can't wait for the next one.
This was a SLOG to get through unfortunately, i ended up having to skip some because i just couldnt force myself to read it all. I am glad i finished this story and know what happened but this last part was really unenjoyable unortunately. 4/10
I really liked this book and up until the introduction of the ‘Vilebloods’ I was happily going to give five stars. They came from nowhere with an unconvincing explanation for their existence. However they did provide a catalyst for an interesting new storyline.
