Readers head onto the seven seas with a girl who poses as a boy in order to sail the oceans. There, "Jim" meets an old friend to the SANDMAN world, Hob Gadling, who shares a tale of his own. "World's End" part 3.
“But given enough time and the right audience, the darkest of secrets scum over into mere curiosities.”
You can call me Ishmael but this is one of the best issues I've read in this series and in comic books in general. For more than one reason, it kept reminding me of "Life of Pi".. or should we say.. "Peggy"?
Very happy to come back to the mainstream plots surrounding Dream and his family members. Listened to the audio-experience Audible Act 3 which encompasses Volumes 7-8 (Brief Lives and Worlds' End)[1], the Sandman Special #1, and other short stories from Vertigo: Winter's Edge #1 & #3 and Vertigo Preview #1.
Looking forward to more backstories and "day in the lives" for other family members such as Desire, and Despair as we've seen with Dream and Death.
"Think on it, and you'll be there: The creaking of the rigging, then the magical moment as the sails majestically lifted and straightened and filled ..."
Hob, an Australian boy who ran off and signed up for a voyage is a sailor by nature. These men just cannot stay away from the sea, who is in truth, a greater mistress that will inspire more loyalty in these men than any woman could as a wife. There is one particular panel I have to call out when Hob is describing his crew mates. A tall Norwegian and equally tall Swede who hated each others guts. Hob never knew why, but this sharp eyed reader could make out the name "Nancy" tattooed on both men's forearms. So perhaps their quarrel was over a woman. Witty, subtle, clever and awesome!
The Indian tells a tale within a tale of a King, his faithless wife and a fruit that confers immortality. And the other passenger is Hob Gadling A great twist to the story! The sea creature, when it appeared, was magnificent. And then there is yet ONE more surprise after that! Of the 3 tales told so far, this is my favorite by far.
