*Join Melisandre in the first book of the Tria Prima Series, an action-packed DARK FANTASY ROMANCE with a plot that twists and turns and tugs at your heartstrings, and LOTS of steam! It does contain explicit scenes and is meant only for mature audiences. Trigger Warnings are provided. This book does end on a cliff-hanger.*
A R Morgan can be found in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest, surrounded by her many fur-babies. She is an avid lover of history and mythology, Morgan is a true Hobbit at heart, enjoying the comforts of home, good books, good food, whilst dreaming of adventures beyond.
Ms. Morgan has a background in Criminology and Psychology from Washington State University.
From the age of five, she began writing her own stories, her overactive imagination desperately needing an outlet. Once in adulthood, authors like Laurell K. Hamilton, Keri Lake, J. R. R. Tolkien, George R. Martin, and Brandon Sanderson only fueled her desire to pursue her own creative path of writing epic romances filled with fantasy, folklore, myths, and legends. The Heart of an Alchemist is Ms. Morgan’s debut novel.
What can I say about this book? Honestly, this book was really enjoyable. I enjoyed having the strongest character be a woman! Melisandre Von Boden is the name of the alchemist, and we learn more about her deeper secrets as the book unfolds. Much of the action in the story takes place in the Nightmare Court. The descriptions of this part of the universe were so vivid that I was able to picture the exact scene in my head as I read. In fact, that was true of the entire book. I think that one of the strongest points of this book for me was that there was loads of info. However, we received it as part of the story and not like an info dump we had to wade through. Overall I would give clear warnings about sexual content and violence. Did this diminish my enjoyment of the book? Not at all! I would advise anyone that wants an action-packed fantasy to pick this one up. I look forward to reading book 2 and plan to reread book 1 in the future.
This was an amazing read. I love the storyline, the characters, and the world itself! You can’t help but get pulled into the story and that ending is heart wrenching!
The story was a swirl of ups and downs that ensure you are emotionally invested.
I highly recommend this book! Though a fair warning make sure you have nothing to do cause you won’t want to stop!
I am so unsure how to rate this. There were some really strong aspects of this book. I enjoyed all of the various lore and mythology that the author did a wonderful job of weaving together. The plot had a good hook and the story was intriguing.
Characters were the issue for me. At first I found the MC really strong and loved the old soul and grumpy attitude she boasted… But then enter the love interest and it’s like she became useless, submissive, and weak. I also have to say I really am not a fan of love/lust at first sight, I really didn’t feel a spark between them. The romance felt rushed, but the quickness does tie into the story so I accept it.
There were also some irritating aspects of the MC having to do with her magic and how often she flaunted how powerful she is but almost never used it when faced with danger?!?!
The end is left on a killer cliffhanger and I enjoyed the story enough that I will continue the series to see what happens next.
Wow, I really enjoyed this book full of wonder and intrigue. Melisandre has spent centuries hiding in the human realm, hiding from fae and vampires but decides it is time to teach her ward, who is half brownie, where his roots lie. She sends him off the the Nightmare Court with her friends, and that is where everything goes wrong. Accused of stealing an important artefact, Toby is brought before the Nightmare Queen to be punished but Melisandre agrees to be the Prince Consorts familiar in return for Toby’s freedom. Not everything is as it seems in this fantastic tale full of twists and turns you won’t see coming. It definitely leaves you wanting more with a giant cliffhanger at the end. If you like your romantic fantasy dark, or just your dark fantasy romantic, this is a definite must read! Please note the trigger warnings
Vampires, demigods, fairies, and creatures: this book has it all! It reminded me very much of "Castlevania" and also a more twisted version of Diana Wynne Jones's "Land of Ingary" trilogy. There was a lot of snark and spice and I absolutely loved it. The ending broke my heart, but knowing there is a second book makes me eager to read more about this feisty alchemist.
I absolutely loved this story. It had me interested right from the beginning and I can’t wait until book 2 comes out. This was an incredible story about the last alchemist. She is such a strong character and have loved reading her story.
This story was profoundly unexpected and in a really good way. Heavy in mythology and science, the story was right in intrigue, action, and romance! This is surely a dark romance but not necessarily in the taboo kind, more like through plotline and evil villain. I loved how adorably grumpy Melisandre was! Definitley looking forward to book two!
I'm a little torn on this one. If I could rate between stars, I'd call it a 3.75, because it's better than a 3, but not quite enough for a 4, in my opinion. The Heart of an Alchemist is a well written, and well researched book crossing lines of all kinds of creatures throughout legend and mythology. Unlike many of the other books in the over-saturated trope, this one portrays accurate creatures and legends and I applaud it. The story line is interesting and enticing, and the ending took me completely by surprise, making the following shortfalls minimal enough that I'll probably pick up the second one because after the TINY teaser included, I HAVE to know what's coming. What I didn't like about this book was that Melisandre and Alcaeus were so very bland. Their characters were set up to be these huge power houses both in intellect and in combat inside the story, and their supporting characters had huge personalities, but they both fell so flat. Their dialogue was boring, Melly's internal dialogue was boring...and PLEASE, I cannot take the 2 page descriptions of one more room or outfit. The color and placement of every fine detail is too much and feels like filler to make the book longer at this point. I hate when books are like this. I really hope there's some character growth in the next book. Speaking of power houses. Melisandre's character is supposed to be massively powerful (and we find out in the end why this is) like the most powerful weapon in all the realms. But she is continuously caught and contained and overpowered and taken by surprise and it really doesn't fit with the projection of her character. There were so many opportunities where I felt myself yelling at Melly what she SHOULD be doing as she just stands there and it's infuriating. This character needed some gusto, it would have made things so much more compelling. Ragna is the villain in this book, but for how old she is, she is painfully immature and holds a huge 'mean girl' vibe that throws off the vibe in the book. She's spiteful and rather than appearing dignified and dangerous she just comes off as petulant. I am very curious to see where this story leads. The author did do an amazing job building this world (despite the over descriptiveness of each space and outfit) and captivating me enough to make me want to read more. Overall it was a good read for fantasy and mythology lovers with just enough spice to pull it out of the YA category, though as I said, Ragna certainly belong there.
The Heart of an Alchemist is the 1st book in the Tria Prima series by A.R. Morgan. This is an action-packed dark fantasy romance with steam.
The gods and goddesses, both worshipped and feared, are slayed and banished by the very champions they created to fight their games of power – but the ruthless fight continues. Melisandre Von Boden is the last of her kind – an alchemist like no other before her with powers even magic cannot match – a weapon to rule the world. Guilt-ridden, she has been hiding for centuries – walking a thin line between the human realm and the Otherworld, trying to remain unseen by both. When her ward Toby is held prisoner by the vampire Viking queen Ragna, she is done hiding. To save Toby, Melisandre agrees to stay in the Nightmare Court and become the Prince Consorts familiar. Little does she now, that Alcaeus Pallas, the said Prince of Nightmares has known of her existence her whole life. Avoiding marriage to Ragna, and trying to find a way to break free from her evil scheme, he has been waiting for the right moment. Finally together, their connection turns out to be much deeper than anyone could have guessed. Will falling for each other be their ruination or salvation?
I first picked the book up because of the eye-catching cover – and it did not disappoint (and yes, the cover really matches the actual character). The author has done a great job of weaving together folklore, myths and legends from every corner of the world. The book is well written and there seems to be a considerable amount of research behind it all. The world building is interesting and complex and the system is unique enough to instantly catch your interest. Most of the story takes place in the Nightmare Court ruled by the vampire Viking queen Ragna – the descriptions of the scenery are very vivid and it is easy to picture and you get transported right into the story. Timeline wise we have the modern human world with all the conveniences and then the Otherworld, which combines the ancient with the modern – quite a creative approach. The storyline is enticing and the book ends with a cliffhanger that I really didn’t see coming. The plot is full of twists and turns and you never get bored. The overall story is not overpowered by romance and vice versa – all is in balance. The characters are interesting and with complex backgrounds. They are also relatable, which I find very important. Both of the main characters have a tragic past that is opened and introduced layer by layer. Melisandre is a bookworm, keeping a low profile and concentrating on her research – she also happens to be one of the greatest weapons in existence. She is pictured as a strong mystical character with funny little human touches: she is a grumpy one, with coffee-addiction and a solitary nature, but she also has a big heart underneath it all. She is down to earth and relatable. She is also guilt-ridden and afraid to unleash her own powers. What I also find interesting is the general description of her appearance – the gold and silver eyes and the marks on her skin – gives her a real badass vibe. Another interesting thing is the way the author has described the workings of her brain (her superpower) – breaking everything down to atom level, working in formulas and calculations – a real scientist there. I also really enjoyed the banter between her and her vampire best friend Elis – it was a lot of fun – really lightened up the mood at times. What annoyed me slightly was her inner dialogue that got a bit tedious sometimes. I also wondered, how she was so thoroughly overpowered so many times, but I think that was to be expected, as she hadn’t really used her powers for a long time. Then we have Alcaeus Pallas, the Prince of Nightmares, a vampire, an invincible champion created by the goddess Athena and also a man with only half of his soul intact. He is clever and his willpower is enviable – it shall be interesting to see, what he can do with his whole soul back in place. He is an old soul with a dark past, but he is also just, intelligent and dangerous. There is the chemistry and the tension between them, but in the beginning their relationship still feels a touch forced and unnatural. It is somewhat of a mixture of slow-burn and insta-love. However it improves as the story goes on and picks up heat. All in all, it is a book definitely worth reading. The writing style of the author is enjoyable – the book is easy to read, the plot unfolds fast and there are a number of interesting twists and turns on the way to keep you hooked. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Melisandre is sitting behind a tower of books when the front door slams and she hears a crash. Her ten-year-old ward Toby falls into the room dusting off the pastry in his hand. Pastries that she didn't give him money to purchase.
Grabbing the bag of pastries while patting him down she finds a small gold ring that didn't belong to her along with a pocket watch. Toby is a Fae hybrid and his Brownie side is famous for their light fingers.
Breaking him of his kleptomaniacal tendencies seemed to be a losing battle, but she was hoping that her best friend, Elis, and his mate, Llyr, taking him to the Otherworld to learn about his Brownie heritage would help him learn to control his tendencies.
She had been in London when she caught his malnourished fingers attempting to rob her. Upon seeing the beaten and malnourished child she took him for dinner and threatened the parents if he received any further harm and also gained their promise that if he ever wanted to live with her they wouldn't stop him. That was three years ago.
Melisandre returned from a visit to find her home destroyed and a note buried beneath a bloody knife handle. It was a demand from the Queen of Vampires for her presence to answer for crimes committed by her ward. Her heart dropped... the cruel queen's penchant for torture and suffering was well known.
She had hidden in the human realm as she was the last of her kind... she was an alchemist. And to save her ward's life she had to become the Consort's Familiar. The Queen wanted Melisandre's power but didn't know what it was and Melisandre would make sure she never found out the true depth of her powers.
I absolutely loved this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. I do have to give a warning straight off... there is a cliffhanger so there is no HEA and it takes the story on a shocking direction. But regardless, I highly recommend this book as the continuing story should be just as amazing and hopefully give a resolution.
Melisandre is the last Alchemist, unlike the rest of her kind she had more than one part of Nature that she could control. And that was a secret she didn't plan to share. Alceaus was the fiancee Consort to a Queen whom he had no plans on marrying.
This book is action-packed and full of danger as Melisandre tries to outsmart a vampire queen determined to control all the realms using Melisandre's power over Nature. This paranormal romance is steamy hot and will keep you turning the pages. Toby and Elis will keep you laughing with their antics.
An Otherworld Court full of intrigue. A King of Vampires with a plan to thwart a demented Vampire Queen determined for war. Can Melisandre and Alceaus' love win all?
Highly recommend and looking forward to the next book in this series!
This Vampire/Alchemist romance was an amazing read. Melisandre (Melly) is a FMC I love to read about. She loves her books, is snarky, grumpy and hides her emotions. I cheered for her throughout the whole book. The dialogue between her and her best friend was hilarious. Anyone who did not not know would think they hated each other. Her relationship with her ward is just misleading. She is gruff and stern with him but at the same time will go all momma bear when he is threatened. Her relationship with Alcaeus, the Prince of Nightmares, is intense. Their chemistry is off the charts even though start off with her being a “gift” to him from the vampire queen.
This was a wonderful story to read. The world this author created was unique with the blend of modern conveniences with realm of fantasy. There were phones, plumbing, references to a song by Frank Sinatra and yet the characters traveled by horse in the vampire realm. I realize there are multiple realms in this book but the blending of convenience between realms is something I liked.
There are twists and turns and many layers to the characters. The dialogue is on point and enhances the plot. So many times, dialogue in a story can detract from the overall book but it is not the case with this one. The dialogue reflected the characters personalities perfectly.
The story was well written and does end on a huge cliffhanger. I cannot wait read the next book to see what happens.
This is an amazing fantasy with vampires, alchemists, fae, and literally anything else you can imagine. The romance is so good, the best I've read in a long time (was steamy if you are into that definitely 10/10). The story really places you right in the middle of whats going on and the ending is insane... need to read the next one asap.
I absolutely loved this book. I cannot stress enough how much this book brought me into the world and made me feel like I was there in it with the characters.
Melisandre was the best MFC, she was interesting, funny, powerful in her own way and I felt like she was relatable and a down to earth character. Her friendship with Eris was the cutest book friendship I have read in a while and I just love there cute banter together. Also Toby was a cutie I loved his little accent I felt like I could hear him talking when I was reading!
Overall definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes anything fantasy or romance, I think people who loved ACOTAR would really enjoy it!
I honestly enjoyed this book so much! I’ve read countless books with romance, vampires, fae, etc. They really never get old for me, but the inclusion of a race of powerful alchemists with Norse mythology mixed in was a refreshing take and I’m here for it!
The FMC, Melisandre, is a delightfully grumpy little bookworm who is also a complete badass! Loved the relationship and snark between her and her best friend! Getting to see her break down her defenses and fall for the MMC was so sweet.
While I’m absolutely awful at science and the like, the depictions of her breaking things down to the atomic level and kicking ass by working out equations and changing the chemical makeup of her surroundings was seriously cool! I can’t wait to see more of it in book 2!
The Heart of an Alchemist transported me into a world of Fae and Vampires. I found myself lost in the story of nightmares and horrible deeds of a wicked Queen that knows no limits to her wrath on everyone around her to get whatever she wants. The story is weaved with beautiful words of passion and desire as well as tragic events that filled me with every emotion.
A.R.Morgan has written one of the best fantasy romances I have had the pleasure of ever reading. Having me hanging on to the edge of my seat for the next event to unfold. I devoured this novel and will impatiently be waiting for the sequel to be released. If I could give this book 10 stars, I would. It's one of my all-time favorite reads as a fantasy lover since childhood. I highly recommend this book to my fellow adult fantasy romance readers.
I was scrolling through one of my book groups and this beautiful cover drew my attention then I read the blurb and I had to read it.
It was an interesting concept of Alchemists being an actual supernatural race with the book following the allegedly last of the Alchemists still in existence.
I really enjoyed the writing style, it was easy to read and fast paced with several properly heart wrenching moments.
There was some spice too and some supernatural creatures also included in this fantasy world which was very enjoyable.
I absolutely want to read more in this world by this author.
A fascinating story with secrets galore! I very much enjoyed reading this story and never wanted to put it down. Now only has this author woven a brilliant tale with so many secrets and struggles for our MC, but she's adding in some amazing twists and turns. Some were painful and tears threatened, but I must admit that the strength of our Alchemist is astounding! I will be waiting with baited breath for the following books in the series, for sure!
I really enjoyed the first book in this series. The author did a great job of drawing you in, and keeping you on the edge of your seat throughout the entirety of the story. It has all the right mix of high fantasy, spice, drama, and everything in between that keeps you going back for just one more chapter. Next thing you know it over, and you are left yearning for more. Can’t wait for the next book in this series to see what fate has in store for Melisandre and Alcaeus.
I just LOVED this book! It had me hooked from the first page! A.R. Morgan writes amazing strong characters and scenes, I was transported to this world. It was like watching a movie in my head. How can you not fall in love with these well written characters, and even have sympathy for the Nightmare Queen, as we learn the history of the land. I really can't wait for the next book in the series!
I absolutely loved this book. It was so addicting! I was drawn in and couldn’t put it down. The world building is so fantastic and the characters have so much depth. There are great twists and that ending oh wow! I need more! I can’t wait for book two!
I was immediately engulfed into the story. So many great characters, world building, demigods and creatures. You don’t want to stop as it just keeps getting better and better. The cliffhanger ending has me wanting to read book two asap. I cannot wait to see what book two has in store.
WOW this is a first read for me by AR and isnst going to be my last i stopped for the pretty cover cause im a cover hoe and liked the blurb so stayed for the story this was so well written and hit the trifecta for me pretty cover good blurb and wicked story flow!
Totally not what I expected, which is great because it was so much better! Morgan does a great job of creatively weaving together this story featuring mythical creatures, vampires and fae. With a single pov, a fast steady pace, good world-building, great character dynamics, found family, witty banter, slow burn tension building spicy romance, mystery/intrigue, and action you can't go wrong. I really enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down - especially after that massive cliffhanger! I can't wait to see where it goes from here!!!
Wow what a book I could not put this down definitely one of my top 7 reads this year Has mysteries and love and everything you want in between magic and vampires plus god champions.
This was my very first experience with a fantasy romance, precisely a high fantasy romance. While fantasy, especially high fantasy, is my favorite genre, I'm not particularly drawn to romance. However, I decided to give this book a chance because the premises I had heard about this novel intrigued me.
It was a good book. I really loved the concept—a world where all folklore and legends coexist. The story itself is quite interesting. Since this book is the first in a series, there’s still much more to come, and I thoroughly enjoyed how the story was set.
We follow Melisandre Von Boden, an alchemist and the last of her kind. The book is narrated in the first-person perspective, and despite not being my preferred style, I found it very enjoyable. I appreciated the writing style; we can clearly distinguish when she's sharing her story with us and when she's lost in thought. At times, it feels as if she's having a conversation with us, the readers. It's well-written, with detailed descriptions of the world-building, the magic system, and the science involved. While the book has its spicy moments, the plot is well-developed around these scenes.
The story has some unexpected twists I didn’t see coming and it does end on a cliffhanger that can captivate you if you've become attached to the characters.
Unfortunately, what didn't work for me were the characters. I found them a bit clichéd. While their powers and abilities are unique, their personalities felt too human. By 'too human' I don't mean that 'they feel real emotions throughout the story'—they do, and I appreciated that—but they came across as stereotyped: the grumpy girl, the handsome and strong guy, the supportive gay best friend, and the mean popular girl who envies the grumpy girl.
If it were solely a fantasy rather than a fantasy romance, I would probably have loved it, as it would have placed more emphasis on the plot and less on the love story. By doing so, it might have provided the characters with greater depth.
I believe that if you're a fan of this particular genre, you'll likely find this book enjoyable. I’m not used to reading books with spicy elements, and it’s not my cup of tea, but it didn’t bother me at all. I think this book would be a good fit for readers who don't mind spicy scenes and are looking for a strong plot. However, I recommend checking content warnings before reading it.
If I ever read more fantasy romance books, I may consider updating my review as I become more familiar with this genre.
I received an advanced reader copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Wonderful world building and creative use of magic. I really enjoyed this book and how creative the author was with mixing logical real world science with mystical magic. The author did a great job with telling the story while also explaining the intricacies of the world, magic use and how each character plays their part All without info dumping and pulling you out of the story.
The characters were wonderfully crafted and enjoyable. The authors use of fated mates vs. chosen mates was enjoyable without it seeming too cheesy.
I’d caution readers who prefer to not read explicit material away from this book but I strongly encourage those who do enjoy dark fantasy to give this one a read. It does end with a cliffhanger, so we can all look forward to reading book two!
