LEARN - PROGRESS - SURVIVE

Jason and his friends just wanted to spend a week at the lake house. Time to relax, hang out, and catch up on old times. Then the System arrived.

It only took a few hours for their world to become a real-life roleplaying game; trading some downtime for the need to learn new skills and powers while trying to defend their new home, their families, and survive.

They don’t know the rules. They don’t know what’s coming next. What they do know is; they need to reinforce and expand their fort while protecting it, keep leveling up, and explore a dangerous new world.

Jason and his friends have no choice but to grow as a team in this base building LitRPG that kicks off a new series.

I wanted to like this, since the base-building/strategy game subgenre of gamelit doesn't have many entries and none of them gave me what I'd hoped for. This one is probably one of the best I've tried, but I still had to drop it at 33%

Plot - 7.5/10, Character - 2/10, Setting/Game Mechanics - 9/10, Writing - 3/10, Enjoyment - 4/10

The premise was standard for a System story: Five people arrive at their lake vacation house when a System Initiation occurs, introducing new flora, fauna, and game-like mechanics to the world. It's nothing we haven't seen before, but precisely what we're here for and probably one of the strongest elements of this book. The plot kept me reading as long as I did.

Unfortunately, the characterization was notably absent. There was no difference between the characters other than what class and skills they chose. Sure, one couple is our MC's brother and sister-in-law and the other couple is a set of his friends, but as far as personality there's nothing to tell them apart. There's no tension amongst the group, no funny dialogue, no nothing. It's like 5 people sat down to play a tabletop game, wrote only two sentences worth of character backstory, and proceeded to play the game.

Luckily, the game mechanics were the most interesting part of the story and did a great job with the settlement building and resource gathering. This didn't feel like an ARPG where each character mows down tons of mobs and the base-building is an afterthought (For that, go read Defiance of the Fall). The fight scenes in this book were what you'd expect from a turn-based RPG, which was interesting and had a lot of potential. But the main focus was gaining new levels and skills as a group, and then developing the lake house, its defenses, its shop, and resources.

The writing was very rough. There was only a moderate amount of glaring mistakes, and the scenes were easy to understand as far as clarity. But the prose was overly wordy and clunky. This was especially true for the dialogue where everybody talked like robots and never used contractions. "I think this is getting to be pointless," Todd said. "Stuff is decaying too quickly, and I think these buildings that are not protected will not last much longer." Pretty much everything said was just a status update, call-outs during a fight, or a summary of their next course of action.

The writing and the lack of characterization made it hard to enjoy this story. While I appreciated the mechanics, things weren't too interesting other than from a clinical observation of what type of mob would spawn next or what resource would come from this new node. The lack of personality and tension made the whole thing read like a bullet-point summary of a tabletop game. So as much as I was interested to see where the story was going, it was the literary equivalent to watching paint dry.

I guess this is still worth a shot for some people. If it sounds interesting, you're in the mood for base-building, and are okay with wooden writing and characters, then the strengths of this story might offer a good experience for some readers.

This is another apocalypse story but more campy (no pun intended).

A group of friends find themselves in their family's cabin when everything changes. Since they aren't "in the thick of it" and there are 5 of them, the usual anxiety and stress of the mass extiction event isn't there.

They kind of truck along, grow the cabin into a fort and meet some intersystem folks that have relocated to their area.

I think the author did a great job of focusing on the now, with these characters, which allow the book to be a sort of mental palate cleanser in between more intense stories.

Great for a Tuesday rainy afternoon

A good draft.

This book reads somewhat robotically. There is very little description or use of varied adverbs and adjectives. Every fight was "tough". There were very few descriptions of emotions or interactions between individuals. There are very little if any descriptions of how people thought, felt, or even looked like. It's a good idea for a book, but there is no feeling to the book or ability to empathize with anybody in the book. For the amount of thought that went into the mechanics in the storyline, I wish I could give him more stars, but I can't. How's that

Did not finish. Quit halfway through.

This reads like a group of people playing a game, not people going through an apocalypse. The combat is terrible, it is just two groups with hit point sinks. There is no tension or realism to it. The characters are just names, they have absolutely no depth at all. The entire system is set to be a grind, but the book itself shouldn't be. After fifty pages I started skimming, at the halfway point I quit

Dry retelling. No life to the storyline.

The entire story had no energy. Good base building premise but no attempt to draw the reader in. Zero excitement. Honestly, no reason to exist in this new world. Very boring.

This is the first book I've read by this author.

What we have here is another apocalypse. The main character and his friend are at a cabin in the woods (no, not like in the movie) when it hits. No one is surprised when they really should be. No matter how many apocalypses stories I read if it really happened, I would be scared out of my mind. These people take a different approach.

They take things at face value and get started finding supplies. They don't board up the house, which was a missed opportunity, but then again, the monsters early on aren't really worth writing about. The progression to level skills is very slow. Almost tediously slow. I know the author means well but not enough happens early on to capture our attention. Things do get better later in the book, however.

Because of the slow progression it's not hard to guess what's coming next. The team goes out each day and fights the monsters nearest to the house. Less than halfway through the book base building becomes prominent. The system doles out awards but again these are mediocre. It's like the overlords managing the system were dead broke and did the best they could with what they had.

The team follows quests, almost like the team is being spoon-fed as to what they should do next. I liked the book, but I would be doing future readers a disservice if I didn't mention this.

The editing is fine and there are plenty of stats. I enjoyed the last 30% much more than the first 70%.

4/5* I hope the author can add some more conflict and oomph to book two.

The outline of the story events kind of made me want to know what would happen next. However, there was no character development or dialogues, just very dull and overly repetitive character sheets, battle mana stats and meditation. This felt like an underdeveloped first draft.

Book one

Well written and edited. I did find one red letter in the middle of a word and one actual mistake that I will put on Goodreads.
I still don't understand how an animal can drop gear. Otherwise I enjoyed the story.

A little dry

I enjoyed my time reading this, but be aware that is more the facts of a LitRPG apocalypse than the emotion of an apocalypse.
There is plenty of theory-crafting and crunchy numbers to read about here. But the death of family members is quickly moved past. And while the dangers of an apocalypse are present, more time is spent on the slog of grinding for XP.
As I like grinding, I find a lot of good here, but wish more time was spent depth of each character rather than their status.

Slightly less than fine

This is a fine book. It has the makings of a good story, but in the half of the book I got through, I never learned a single thing about any character. I don't think there was even a single physical description of anyone. I didn't know how they cooked food or cleaned clothes. I didn't know how they saw after dark in the fort, because the second the characters were done fighting the day ended.

I never knew why anything happened and the characters never seemed to care about the why. The author went into deep detail about hit points and XP and armor points, but I didn't know any relationship in any real sense. I knew it was 2 couples and one single guy, but nothing other than that. In addition, because I never knew a thing about the characters, I struggled to keep the names straight and I don't think I ever cared about anyone because they never felt like real people.

This author is definitely a gamer, and probably a good one. The entire book was listening to a guy play an imaginary video game in technical detail. I think he fell short on the "lit" aspect of LitRPG. From what I could get through of the story, he just did what he does in games and left his characters standing in the base until he wanted to play again.

I don't write this to be mean, I write it because the author has potential to be good. He understands the RPG aspect really well and could do better if he just remembered to include his characters personalities or maybe a few descriptions of the setting in the story rather than just leveling them up.

This was a dnf for me. 40% of the way in and they are still fighting the same mobs. And not even interesting mobs. Shrubs, wolves and bears. Over and over again. If hate to be in this litrpg world. It's just too boring to contemplate.

I really enjoyed this book, it doesn't have a lot of character personality development but it has plenty of skill and level advancement. The system, combat, and base building are done really well especially once the author realizes they don't need to tell us how every single battle with wolves goes once the protagonists have it down and focuses on the differences in lineups and skills used compared to previous encounters. It feels sort of like a retelling from the perspective of someone who played an old school RPG. Party line up, quest, schedule and so on which is why there isn't a ton of personality development. This might be a hard read for people who come into it expecting a large focus on comedy, personalities (mostly brooding) or harem like much of the genre but for experienced gamers who played games before open world or sandbox games that were more targeted RPGs or had to use their imagination to get through tabletop campaigns with limited time and couldn't spare weeks to do campaigns this will be a great read. I'm honestly surprised I didn't stumble across it sooner. If you're looking for adult content, or comedy I don't really recommend this for you but if you've ever played and enjoyed older text based RPGs where they didn't have the massive teams of development for each character and you had to fill in part of the story with your own imagination and enjoyed those while also enjoying the modern LitRPG, Post Apocalypse, and System Integration genres this one is a good one.

Fun story

I quite liked the story. The premise is a pretty generic system apocalypse but with more of a base building focus than most.

This was written as a first person narrative from the PoV of one of the friends who founded the camp, but it read more like a diary rather than a story to me, we didnt have a lot of dialog or interaction between the characters, just Jason describing what happened day to day. This made it a lot harder to connect with the characters, I much prefer it when the characters live the story, when there is a lot of dialog, and we get to see all of their personalities, even the non important side characters. Here we had a lot of new people come in, and the were described as the new healer, or the weaker healer we were training up etc. Rather than a person with a name, they were just a number and a skill.

I really like how the characters developed slowly, a lot of time passed, and they le eled and skilled up over time, rather than huge jumps in power it was months longer, steady growth.

The system could be better, it latterly is set up like a video game, with very limited directed growth, just get exp and a new skill level is given to you. If your learning magic, you should have to actually learn it I think. The characters commented on this, so hopefully a satisfactory explanation of what the system is will be forthcoming in future books.

Worth the read, and has potential to be a good series.

I really liked this book at first and then it started feeling like I was having a to do list read to me. I love base building stories and do not mind crunchy (stat heavy) litrpg but this one felt a bit like a granola bar left in the desert for a month. I do applaud the aspects of the story that were original and the characters were interesting. The pacing and challenge level were both good and the MC was mature and not a constant complainer like in some litrpg stories. If the next one shows up on Audible plus for free or if it is deeply discounted I will listen to the next one but otherwise I am just not very excited about this. The author and the series both have real potential and as mentioned above it does avoid a lot of pitfalls so it gets 4 stars not 3.

This is a hard to review to write. The ideas are good, maybe even strong. But it is more of a shopping list of a story then a novel. I don't care how many times or how much money levels up your credit terminal - once is enough. Stats constantly early on. There are five main characters, I don't think I can tell you anything interesting about any of them, including the only point of view character. Almost zero character development. The author hand-waves the 'dealing with these changes' and never looks back.

It does get better at the end, as there is a more non-system(?) goal and they work to achieve it.

On the other hand, I'm strangely tempted to read the next book. So, there is that.

Do you like lists? Yes? Then have I got a book for you! This is a system apocalypse LitRPG that eschews character and plot for lists. For much of the book we have five characters living together in a cabin in the woods and honestly, I never learned their names. Not even the MC. Because they had no discernible identities of their own. There was no conversations between them, just the occasional quick chat about what they should do next. Rather than being characters, they were their character sheets. What passed for plot was the list of things they did each day to grind their stats and collect system credits. Meh.

It's an excellent, compelling story! The characters are very well written, and the story drives itself forward through their motivations and interactions with each other and the incredibly well thought-out RPG system. For anyone who is a fan of the LitRPG genre, this book is a must-read! It's so easy to immerse yourself in the System and imagine how you would have fared if it was real. Start reading and get ready for an adventure that will sweep you off your feet!

Really good book!

Pretty standard LitRPG with a couple of twists. I liked how hard they had to work for their levels and that the main character was just a regular good decent guy; not particularly over powered. The core group was smart and lucky picking complementary classes. They also lucked out starting from a decent place they could upgrade. Overall a very enjoyable read. Definitely recommend for anyone that enjoys LitRPG.

3 1/2 stars. In this LitRPG, it really is about the group of friends as they support each other and grow to try to survive and help their families. They also make a smart but equal truce with a non-human group. They weren't about just themselves or immediately think that anything non-human is bad. Sure there are humans out there taking advantage of each others but not really this group. I liked this wasn't so much about the individual as many LitRPG are.

I am not sure how this book has such a high rating. Reading the book felt like I was listening to NPR. There was no emotion, even in the middle of fights. Descriptions of fights are vague and make you feel like you are hearing about a general recap of the fight, rather than experiencing it real time. This could have been a cool story, I just think the way it was written makes everything fall flat. I probably won't finish this one and definitely won't continue the series.

Slow and Steady

I read/listen to a lot of litrpg books, so I get inpatient if a book doesn't start by grabbing my attention. I have a new rule to read at least 20 chapters before I give up on a book. I have to say, I almost didn't make it a few times. The book was lacking something. It read so dry! Regardless, I made it to the end and will see if the 2nd book picks up its pace and gets more exciting.

DNF after the first few chapters.

First time reading a LitRPG novel and, look, maybe this genre just isn't for me. Give it a few stars assuming that those who like this style and would probably be able to get more out of it will appreciate the gameplay stuff. But for me, as a piece of literature, this is a no. There are a number of characters, but I couldn't for the life of me tell you who any of them were, what they looked like, what they sounded like. There's no real emotion, dialogue or anything.

I'm reading about the System taking over and how the main character suddenly finds the whole world has changed and I'm like, ok, does this bother you? Are you intrigued? Are you... anything at all? How are you responding to this? But no, we're just straight into getting on with quests and whatnot.

I know there are more books in this series and I've looked through some samples of each to see if the writing style improves, but it doesn't. It's really of lot of we did this and then we did that and then that was really tough so we then did this. If that's your thing (and again, I don't know this genre, maybe there's a readership out there this is perfect for) but it left me feeling like I was reading a rundown of someone's D&D game.

Don’t read this. This is at best a first draft of a book. It reads exactly like someone playing a video game with friends, and those friends couldn’t care less about the plot. This book is all progression and combat and no interpersonal stories whatsoever. Even the combat you barely know what’s happening. People take damage and do damage, but it’s almost entirely in points. I would consider trading this if it ever gets fleshed out.

KU Review

A bit of slice of life narrative laid out almost like a diary. Progressing in this system apocalypse is slow! So don’t expect uber op characters.

General disclaimer: I want to be clear in that I do not factor cost into any review and as such, this is simply a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis.

Good First Effort

I enjoyed this author's foray into the LitRPG genre. I liked the cooperative effort of the characters and the fun scenarios. I wish there had been more character development and depth to the plot but this was a solid first effort. I will try the author's next book.

Good Read

The story has a solid grinding element with good monster fights. There's a lot of world catastrophe, but honestly, it's very light on personal growth. To sum up... a good semi positive light read that will leave you wanting to look forward to the next book when you need to fill up with some mellow chill read time.

Game is on.

Jason had thought it was just a gathering of his brother and wife and a friend and his wife. Who knew when the world went sideways and screens popped up in your vision telling you your stats, that they would have to fight morphed animals to survive and prosper. An excellent read. Can't wait for next installment.

It's almost great

The book is awesome until the last quarter. Then the author does some just weird shit I don't know how to explain. Population increases dramatically, but then it doesn't.....and then it does. What? The entire last quarter of this book is fast paced mental retardation.

Nailed it!

Wow great start to a new series, can’t wait for the next book in the series. Well developed characters that are introduced through action not talking heads. Love that the story has even fighting vs development of the environment and skills (other than fighting). Totally recommend this book to anyone.

great world building

The story gets you familiar with the survival style and does a good job of not missing events or adding things that never occurred. The characters don’t start overpowered and have to earn it and it continues throughout the story. It gets a bit slow at times but I find myself coming back to the story to read what happens next.
