Mr. Big Shot

Rate this book
Biting banter, fake relationships, and illicit workplace rendezvous—anything goes in this romantic comedy from USA Today bestselling author R.S. Grey.

While most little girls grow up idolizing Ariel or Belle, I was banging a plastic gavel and pretending to be Judge Judy. I spent my summers divorcing Barbie and Ken and splitting their Dreamhouse assets. Now, my goal to become the very best acquisitions lawyer at the top firm in Chicago is within reach.

I’m one month into my big-girl job at Elwood Hoyt, venti Starbucks in hand, ready to take on the day. The sleek elevator doors are about to close…then he steps in after me. Hudson Rhodes—the one senior partner I was told to avoid at all costs—just so happens to be the heartless villain I’m assigned to work under.

Ever since he found out who I am—the Scarlett Elwood—we’ve been enemies, the sort who constantly bicker and bark, take jabs in the boardroom, and occasionally pop up shirtless in each other’s steamy dreams. Y’know, that kind. He has to know I could run to my dad at any time and demand his firing, but his confident smirk says he knows I’d never give him the satisfaction.

The elevator chimes as we reach our floor, and I feel his broad shoulders pull even with mine. Fury mixes with fear, hatred with lust. He turns to briefly hold my gaze before confidently stepping out in front. His message is

If I want to reach my goal, I’m going to have to go through him first.

❝this is not a profound thought. It’s not revolutionary or shocking. It’s Saturday; I’m at a wedding; no, thank you, I don’t want any more wine at the moment; and I love Hudson Rhodes.❞

this is, single handedly, one of the best romcoms I’ve read so far this year because it skillfully balanced those tropes and arcs.

"I’m a man in my thirties with a crush."

the writing was flawless and the storyline entertaining. i loved the female main character’s personality and how she didn’t let the accusations of nepotism and favoritism everyone was throwing her way, at every occasion and encounter, tarnish her job experience or her devotion to accomplish and escalate in a ruthless, men world.
the romance was slowly built around work related scenes or quality time the protagonists shared-secretly, intimately-. their banter, chemistry and camaraderie were brilliantly portrayed. i loved their well oiled mechanism of teasing each other and being honest and transparent at all costs. all in all, it was a quick and enjoyable read. would definitely recommend it as plate cleanser!

favorite quote:

“I broke up with Jasper,” […] Nyles’ response absolutely slays me. “Oh, sweetie, of course you did. You were never going to marry him. He’s blond."
i loved Nyles’ character because that’s the SPIRIT 💅🏽💅🏽

many thank to Grey’s Promotions for providing an arc in exchange of an honest review.

enemies to friends to lovers between a first year associate and a partner at the law firm. RS Grey's BRADs are pretty tame (for a B.R.A.D.) but this is her spiciest yet, in my humble opinion. well written, funny, and incredibly likable characters. I also want to give her an award for how consise her books are. I feel like so many B.R.A.D. authors torture us with 200 additional unnecessary pages! RS Grey writes a good normal dude B.R.A.D.- no billionaires, no mob bosses, just normal guys who resemble a Hemsworth brother (we don't need these dudes tooooo normal). A quick, light, spicy read I think you'll love, perfect for a B.R.A.D. beginner!

3.75/5 ⭐️ If I ever want a good laugh and just a fun and cute read, I always turn to this author. I just love her humor and it works for me. This one was an enjoyable read but not my favorite by her.

Scarlett and Hudson did have some great banter and I loved that he fell first 🤭. It was also a slowburn which is my favorite type of romance. Both characters were also very likable. They had some really cute moments too that made me smile 😊. He was so soft for her and I liked how he had a crush on her lol. It was really adorable! ☺️

My main issue with this book was the workplace setting.

I knew going into it that it was a workplace romance and I hadn’t read one of those in a while. But after reading this one, I remember why I stopped reading them lol. It reminds me too much of my job and it definitely made it less enjoyable for me. I’m not trying to think about work while I read 😄.

Overall, it was a pretty decent read for me. I liked some of the humor and the romance was really cute but I didn’t love the plot.

Summary

Scarlett Elwood has just started working at her family's law firm in Chicago - something she has always dreamt of despite her family's objections. She is placed under the supervision of Hudson Rhodes, a senior partner who is aiming high in the company <3

⚖️workplace/office romance
⚖️age gap
⚖️dual POV
⚖️gym BROOOOS
⚖️slowish burn
⚖️family goals :)))
⚖️fake dating
⚖️enemies to lovers (to a certain extent lol, I feel like zodiac academy has messed up what "enemy" means to me, like if they're not LITERALLY TRYING TO KILL EACH OTHER ARE THEY REALLY ENEMIES????????? lmaooo)

Review

THIS WAS SO GOOODDD!!! I went through a phase last year when I read about 4 RS Grey books in a row and they all got 2-3 stars and it was super depressing but FINALLY we've hit the jackpot again!!
It's giving Hotshot Doc but lawyer edition ✨✨✨✨

description

The plot was GREAT and so was the romance ❤️

Scarlett
↪ made a great heroine!!!
↪ I loved her cat Moira (star of the show fr)
↪ She was so hardworking and had to deal with judgement the second she walked into the office building because of who her family was which she handled like a champ. Her struggle was different because she had to prove that she'd earnt her place at the firm rather than it being given to her, meaning she was working 10x harder than anyone else
↪ Her ex-bf was annoying (HIS PARTING COMMENT TO HER.. EXCUSE ME SIR???) but glad he wasn't present for very long

Hudson
↪I LOVED HIMMM (also RHODES AGAIN!?!? Every book character called Rhodes = me instantly attached)
↪ He was the broody, silent type with a secret heart of gold <3
description
↪ highlight for me was his relationship with Lucy his assistant (she was also a ⭐)

The romance
↪ perfect slowish burn with lots of yearning
↪ great chemistry
↪ LOVED the gym sessions :)))
↪ it was really sweet that they developed a friendship as well <3
↪ the ending at Scarlett's brother's wedding was SO CUTE!!

Overall - A DELIGHT, THANK YOU RS GREY <33

No rating, DNFed as soon as I realized this is not my style of humor in a rom-com. R.S. Grey rom-coms are in general a hit or miss for me. Unfortunately, this office romance comedy lands in the ever growing ‘miss’ pile.

😐 My first cringe… Heroine gets pooped on by a bird while exiting her apartment building on her way to her first day at her new job. She returns back to her apartment, changes into a clean outfit and then re-exits the building, but makes sure to secretly flip off the bird as she passes by it this time. That will really show the bird 🙄 Lol, how old are we?

😑 My final straw… Next, she arrives for her first day of work at the skyscraper law office building (where her father happens to be a top boss and several of her brothers are also employed). As she walks into the orientation/meeting room that’s used to welcome the new hires, all of the other new hires immediately recognize her as the boss’s daughter somehow and refuse to let her sit close to them, or they flat out tell her ‘don’t talk to me!’ Really?! It was classic high school behavior. I’m too old for this crap. And why would everyone intentionally be an asshat to their new boss’s daughter?!

I can’t comment on the chemistry btwn H and h as I didn’t get that far.

i did not get this book one bit— the potential was there but execution not so much.
this book was branded with enemies to lovers trope, but in what sense were they truly enemies? it was more like a friends to lovers/ workplace based story. also, the female character having a boyfriend in the beginning of the story made zero sense, it added nothing to the storyline especially when from day one both main characters began lusting for one another— ugh i hoped for this one to turn out to be a classic rs grey romcom, but unfortunately this was so bland and now i’m lowkey upset.

This was so good?

The only thing I didn't like was that mushy speech towards the end. Gotta admit I was a liiittle turned off by it but otherwise, let's see how I'll feel about the book in a few years during a reread, because this definitely warrants one.

Might be me, but I felt that the blurb didn't really match up to the story? In circumstances, yes,but in vibes, less.
To start with, this obstinate need to categorize Hudson as a "villain" doesn't really work, as he's NOT one. A man focusing on his work, avoiding all distractions, and single-mindedly working towards his goals does not make him a villain? He's supposed to be this bad guy, but in reality he is not. His assistant is not scared of him, the environment he works in would demand the exacting attitude he has. It doesn't feel uncommon to me, but more like what would be expected. He's not an asshole, he just suffers no fools, and seems to be actually respected by his peers.
And on the other hand, Scarlett is thrust into this box of being the boss's daughter, and made to be hated on because of that, but that's the extent of it. I couldn't get why this was made into such an issue, because in the end of the story, she's still the boss's daughter, she still continues to do a really good job, and she still seems to have no "friends" at work. I'd expect that by the end of the story, she'd have bonded with her colleagues, given that we're told she's alienated all the time before the first-years get disbanded. But it seems like nothing happened there. The workplace situation seemed more juvenile à la high school than a proper adult workplace, and I think that I'm probably too old for this.
My review feels like a lot of nitpicking, but I think I went in expecting something, and that wasn't what I got. The love story and attraction between the main characters felt underwhelming to me. The build-up was choppy.
I feel awful to write such a review for an author's book whose previous works I have loved, some of them being favorites.
Some parts were funny, I did enjoy those.

This was hot and not at all what I expected but in the best possible way. A bit of a twist on the usual office boss romance.

Hudson was perfect and definitely knew all the right things to say ..

“Scarlett Elwood, you could fucking lie there frozen and you’d still be the sweetest thing I’ve ever felt. If he was bored, it’s because of his own damn issues.”

I've had some big misses recently with this author but this definitely feels like her old style with a bit more heat which I'll never complain about.

Another entertaining read from R.S. Grey.

Mr. Big Shot is like the equivalent of a pallet cleanser when you are jumping between different genres. I breezed through this book so quickly and hadn't even realized it. It was that damn good.

Ms. Grey really knows how to write relatable and thoroughly enjoyable characters (both main and secondary). I love how all these characters always help sustain the story without feeling inundated with too many people.

The plot of this story is very simple and that’s one of the best parts about this book. While it's simple, it's very entertaining and just makes for a great, perfect read to jumpstart things for a reader.

What can I say other than, Mr. Big Shot truly showcases why I will always read anything Ms. Grey puts out. It's a flawless story with impeccable writing.

Mr. Big Shot was written just like all of R.S Grey’s other books but this WORKED FOR ME!! I had to take a break from her books. They just got too boring & predictable and while this one is the same as all the others it’s been enough time that it didn’t bother me.

Like usual the mmc and fmc have a not so nice first meeting, somehow become friends, sleep together then ice each other out before reconciling their “friendship” but it’s never the same. Before they finally admit to themself and each other they’re actually in love 🫣🤭

I absolutely LOVE this authors workplace romances like no other ones ever compare for me. I wouldn’t consider this a slow burn bc around 50% they sleep together for the first time BUT they don’t confess feelings until the VERY end.

Hudson was such a wonderful mmc. The whole hate everyone but you 😭☺️ is so near & dear to me!!! The only time I got irritated with him was when he felt guilty after sleeping with Scarlett. Other than that I adored that man. Hard on the outside but a big softie on the inside 🫶🏻

”She’s made me soft, for her.”

I liked how determined Scarlett was with her career 😌 literally no one wanted her to be working there but she wasn’t backing down, took all the work thrown her way and then some. She knew what she wanted and wasn’t afraid to go after it (in all aspects of life!!)

Their friendship and banter.☺️ How at the end Hudson knew he wanted Scarlett above all else and wasn’t afraid to tell anyone 😉 HER DAD (the big boss!!!) playing Cupid!!! Omggg I just loved it all!!!

“I’m a man in my thirties with a crush. It’s embarrassing. I’m obsessed. And I don’t get obsessed with anything outside of maxing out my billable hours. Ever.”

”“Did I really hurt you?” she asked, sounding concerned. “Yeah.” “Are you crying?” “A little.” She laughed and pushed me away playfully. God, I love making her laugh.”

“This stuff with Scarlett…what do you call them again? Oh right, feelings—they’re screwing me up, distracting me from the simple cut-and-dry life I’ve always known.”

“Scarlett considers this. “Is that why you were sick the other day?” “Yes.” I shrug. “Lovesick, I guess.””

”And though it’s insane and hokey, I get the sudden realization that I would—if I had the ring in my pocket already—drop down to my knee on this dance floor and ask her to marry me on the spot.”

There’s really no in between for me with RS Grey books. I either love or hate them. This one I quite enjoyed even if it was a bit odd at times. I guess Hudson’s character threw me for a loop a little but I stayed up until 2am last night to finish this so I guess that’s pretty telling.

“i try to hide my smile by looking down. he turns his body so his hip leans against the rail, and his full attention rests on me in an unnerving way.” (kinda need him in a way that discredits the ideologies of feminism. sorry sisters i understand her!)

this was such a proper romcom omg like the banter was getting me good! i love that they were both losers around each other but in a very endearing way you knowww. if you loved this pls tune into darvey diaries (the tv show, suits) bc scarletthudson is their sister ship 🫶

“god, I love making her laugh.” he’s just like me

“i went home and i slept on it. i think we should k!ll him.” this actually made me laugh out loud 😭

“okay, but be forewarned, i will be checking out your butt when you walk by me.” my remark doesn’t even faze him; he’s used to me by now.
chaotic gf x reserved bf always the best dynamic

this is def in my r.s grey top 5 (arrogant devil is my #1 still) i had fun and will be attending the scarletthudson 2024 wedding! and i love me an epilogue to an epilogue BUT WHY WAS IT SHORT? FINISH THE MOVIEEEE! also funny how i still dont know this man’s age like he was a different age of ‘in his thirties’ every chapter in my mind. r.s grey said issa secret ok age is just a number 🤣🤣

this was more dislike -> friends -> lovers than enemies -> lovers but im kinda used to how her books are pitched. and not shelving this as fake dating bc i feel like it was so brief it barely happened

„I almost didn’t come.”
I smirk at him over my shoulder. „Scared of what the townspeople will do to you now that you’ve stolen Christmas?”

i was feeling this one. so much. overall it was kind of giving wattpad in some ways, like „if i find out you did something to my sister, you’ll be done with” kind of way and also the father mendling (for example — a said reveal at the end). but what did it for me in this one was the humor for sure.

„You got a death wish, lady?!” No! The exact opposite—I have a dream!

workplace romance just does it for me (80% of the time, i would say) and i don’t care what that says about me.

„Don’t… interrupt me,” I say, focusing to push the weights up. […]
„I was just saying hi,” she remarks, all innocence.
„See? I lost count.”
„You were on twelve.”
„How do you know?”
„It’s too embarrassing to admit.”

R.S. Grey is one of my favorite romance authors for so many reasons and this book just keeps proving why.

I absolutely love the characters and the moments they have. Their chemistry is insane and has you rooting for them through it all. I liked how much characters were interesting and I loved getting to know them. The moments they have are exciting to read about.

Overall, I definitely recommend this book!! With explosive chemistry, these characters will not disappoint and the storyline is overall great :’)
